• Identify the types of Assignments in Canvas.

• Create an assignment to submit as a student.

• Create/edit a Rubric to grade and provide feedback to an assignment.

• Grade an assignment with SpeedGrader.

Assignments - Overview

• Access from Assignments Index Page or Modules.

• Five Assignment Types– Assignments

– Discussions

– Quizzes

– Not Graded

– External Tools (Turnitin, Office 365)

Assignments Index Page

• Access all course assignments.

• Global settings.

• Assignment groups.

• Assignment name, due date, module, points possible, availability and publish status.

Assignments in Modules

• Add as a new or existing item.

• Module status (unpublished/published) overrides individual item status.

Student View of an Assignment

• Assignment information and description.

• Attachments (i.e. assignment instructions or other resource).

Practice Activity

• Create a practice assignment

– Select settings that you plan to use for a future assignment.

– Publish the assignment and preview it using the Student View.

Rubrics

Rubrics

• List categories of performance to be assessed.

• Describe levels of performance in each category.

• Communicate criteria for developing, revising, and judging work.

• Make criteria transparent for purposes of effective feedback and/or grading.

Rubric

• Feature a grid of "criteria" (columns) and "levels" of achievement (rows).

• The instructor assigns points or weights to particular criteria, and then evaluates student performance in each area.

• Find Rubric option

– Select rubric used in other assignments.

– Select rubric in other courses (instructor role).

• Default - Full Marks = 5, No Marks = 0

• Add additional ratings – Split Rating or Add Rating.

Manage Rubrics

• Access, create and edit rubrics from central location.

Practice Activity

• Add a Rubric to an Assignment.

– Add at least two criterion and three ratings.

• Using Student View, submit the assignment.

– Attach a file (i.e. word document).

– Review submission.

Grades

Gradebook Overview

• Two Views - Gradebook and Individual View

• Columns generated with the creation of a published graded Assignment.

• Each column displays Assignment Title, Points possible.

• Export and Import options – for backup purposes or specific calculations.

Sorting Options & Settings

• Filter gradebook by Section, Student Name or Secondary ID

• View Settings– All active students (default).

– Arrange columns - Due Date (default), Points, or Assignment Group

– Grading History

– Hide Student Names

Student Information

• Student Last Name, First Name.

• Section

• Secondary ID – Saclinkusername.

• Sort in ascending or descending order.

• Access student’s Grades page (Individual View).

Gradebook

Assignment Information

• Submission type icons -discussion, document, text, quiz, filmstrip, link

• Grades type – dash, number, letter, EX

• Color shading - Yellow, pink, gray lined.

• Blue and black warning icons.

Assignment Settings

• Assignment details.

• Access SpeedGrader.

• Message Students Who…

• Set a default grade.

• Curve grades (irreversible).

• Mute an assignment.

• Download Submissions.

• Resize column width.

• Sort column data in ascending or descending order.

SpeedGrader

Grading with SpeedGrader

• Access SpeedGrader from Assignment or Gradebook.

• Enter a Grade or use a Rubric for grading.

• Provide assignment feedback using the comments box.

• Use annotation tools within preview window to provide inline comments.

Practice Activity

• Use SpeedGrader to grade an assignment.

– Use annotation options to provide feedback.

– Grade using the Rubric to select rating for each criterion and feedback.

• Access the Grades page in Student View to see graded assignment.
