Section 4: Grading Assignments
Section 1: Creating an Educator Account
1. Go to flipgrid.com and select Educator signup. Sign up using an existing
Google or Microsoft account.
2. Note: Students do not need to create accounts for Flipgrid. Only teachers
need accounts. Students will access the Grid through Assignments in
Canvas.
3. From now on, you will log in to your account using “Educator Login.”
Section 2: Setting up Flipgrid to Use with
Canvas
1. Log in to Canvas and open the course you want to use Flipgrid with.
2. Go to settings. Click on Apps. Enter “Flipgrid” in the search box. Click on
the Flipgrid logo.
3. Click on “Add App.” A window will pop up asking you for a Consumer
Key and a Shared Secret. We’re going to copy these from Flipgrid in the
next steps.
4. Open a new tab or window in your browser, and go to
flipgrid.com and log in to your educator account.
5. In the top right corner of your screen, click on your name, and then
choose “Integrations.”
6. Click “Add New Integration” and enter the name of your class.
Note: This name is for your reference only.
Flipgrid will then generate a Consumer Key and a Shared Secret.
7. Copy the Consumer Key and Shared Secret into Canvas (see photo in
Step 3 of this section).
8. Click “Add App.” You should get a quick notification saying the app was
successfully added.
9. Refresh your Canvas page. You should now see Flipgrid in the menu on
the left.
10. Click on Flipgrid in the menu. You will see a message to connect
Flipgrid to Canvas. Click on “Create a Course Grid.” Canvas will generate
your Grid.
11. Click the Settings option in your course sidebar. Then select the
Navigation tab. Drag the Flipgrid item down to the Disabled Links area.
(This will force students to use Assignments to access Flipgrid, so their
responses show up in Speedgrader). Hit Save.
Great job! You’ve successfully connected Flipgrid to Canvas! Continue to
Section 4 to learn how to create your first assignment!
Section 3: Making an Assignment
1. Open up a new assignment in Canvas.
2. Fill in the Assignments settings as usual, including Assignment Name,
Points, Due Dates, etc. For Submission Type, select “External Tool.”
Then click “Find” and search for Flipgrid. Then click “Select.” Canvas
will enter the necessary URL for you. Make sure you check the box that
says, “Load This Tool In A New Tab.”
3. Save and Publish your assignment as normal. Then go back to your
educator account in Flipgrid to adjust the Topic settings over there.
4. From your educator account click on your class (Grid), and then click on
the assignment (Topic) you just created. From the Topic Details page,
click the pencil icon to edit.
5. You will be taken to a new page where you can customize the settings for
your assignment. Make sure to click on the “More Options” at the
bottom of the page to see all the available settings.
6. Make sure to click the red button that says “Create Topic” or “Update
Topic” after you finish with the Assignment Settings.
Assignment Settings
Topic Title: This is the assignment title that your students will see
Recording Time: Set a maximum time for your assignment (up to 5
minutes). There is no way to set a minimum recording time for your
students.
Prompt: You can use this space to give instructions for your assignment.
Focus: Add a picture, video, or other resource to your assignment. You
can only have one focus item per assignment.
Optional Settings:
Topic Tip: A short featured note to your students (Example: Smile,
Speak slowly, 30 seconds minimum, etc.)
Topic Attachments: Despite the name, you cannot attach files. If you
have a file hosted online (in Google Drive, for example), you can include
a link to the file here.
Topic Status
• Video Moderation: Enable this if you want your student videos to
remain private. If you don’t enable this setting, students will be
able to view each other’s videos immediately after they are posted.
If you enable video moderation, you will need to “activate” student
videos before other students can see them.
• Student-to-Student Replies: This allows students to send video
replies to each other’s responses.
• Status: Flipgrid Topics can have three statuses: Active, Frozen, and
Hidden.
o Active: The Topic is open, and students can submit
responses
o Frozen: The Topic is in a view-only mode. Students can see
videos that have already been submitted, but they cannot
make new submissions.
o Hidden: Only the teacher can see the Topic and its
responses.
• Launch and Freeze Dates: You can set your Topic to Freeze
automatically here. You could also push back the Launch date, so
that the Topic will remain Hidden until you are ready for students
to see it.
Video Features
• Video and Selfie Styles: Choose whether you would like students to be able to use their front-facing camera, rear-facing camera, or
both.
• Video Editing: When enabled, this allows students to trim the
beginning or end of their video. Most students won’t realize they
have this option, but tech-savvy students may appreciate it.
• Video title: When enabled, this allows students to add a title to
their video. Unless you want to require a title, it is recommended
that you disable this setting.
• Attachment Link: When enabled, this allows students to add a link
to an online file. Unless you want to require a file link, it is
recommended that you disable this setting.
• View Count: Display the number of views a video has received.
• Likes: Allow students to “like” other students’ videos.
• Sticky Notes: When enabled, this allows students to make notes
before they record, and view the notes on the screen while they are
recording. The notes are not visible in the finished video and are
not saved after the student finishes recording.
Feedback: Here you can choose between Flipgrid’s default rubric (Basic
Feedback) and your own custom rubric (Custom Feedback). If you plan
to grade in Speedgrader in Canvas, this may not use this feedback
feature at all.
Continue to the next page for more details.
To create your own rubric, click on Custom Feedback and then Add
Criteria. Fill in the Title, Description, and Minimum and Maximum
Scores. Here’s an example:
After you create a criteria, it will always be available to you in future
assignments. You can check the boxes next to your previous criteria to
select which ones will be used for this assignment.
Section 4: Grading Assignments
Using Canvas Speedgrader You can grade Flipgrid assignments in Speedgrader and the scores will be
automatically entered into your Gradebook.
You can also grade the assignments in Flipgrid through your Educator
account. This allows you to take advantage of a lot of the special features
Flipgrid offers, but you will have to manually transfer your scores into your
Canvas gradebook.
Using Flipgrid Grading Important: Using Flipgrid grading allows you to make use of the custom
rubrics, but you will need to manually enter the scores into your Canvas
gradebook.
1. From your educator account click on your class (Grid), and then click on
the assignment (Topic) you want to grade. From the Topic Details page,
click on a student submission.
2. Here’s what the grading view looks like:
1. Here you can assign values to each of your rubric criteria.
2. Here you can add comments for the student.
3. If you want to leave video feedback for the student, you can do that
here. This video will only be available to this student.
4. If you want to leave video feedback that the whole class can see, you
can do that here.
5. Click on edit to change the student’s display name or email address
(important if you plan to send feedback via email).
6. Here you will see that there are three ways for students to receive
your feedback.
• They can visit my.flipgrid.com if they have made an account.
This method is not recommended.
• You can copy a link to the feedback and send it to the student
(in Remind, for example).
• You can email the feedback to the student using the email
address shown on the Edit view (#5).
Note: It’s a little hard to see, but the orange arrow and circle are pointing to
a small white arrow. You can click on that arrow to easily move forward to
the next student.
