WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS

STAYS IN VEGAS.

WHAT HAPPENS IN CANBERRA YOU’LL FIND IN CANBERRA WEEKLY.

Hold on to your seats!

Welcome Welcome to the CSO’s 2017 Canberra Weekly Matinee Magic concert VEGAS! We are delighted to bring you this afternoon of symphonic swing with Australia’s Leading Lady, Rhonda Burchmore OAM, and the King of Cool, Andy Seymour, in this tribute to the bygone days of Las Vegas. Please join

me in also welcoming guest conductor Luke Spicer, who is making his CSO debut with us today.

The era of Sinatra, Elvis, Bobby Darin, Liberace, Wayne Newton and the Rat Pack left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry which lives on today. The glitz, glamour and thrill of the Las Vegas Strip created a unique environment, and some of the biggest names in show-business linked their careers to the lounges, theatres and nightclubs of Vegas. Today we celebrate the musical genius of this era interpreted through the expertise of your Canberra Symphony Orchestra.

I would like to thank Nick Samaras and the Canberra Weekly magazine for their ongoing support of this Matinee Magic concert and for CSO activities throughout the year. The collaboration between the Canberra Weekly and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra demonstrates our joint commitment to celebrate the positives in life, of which great music is a fine example. We take the stage today to honour people who have been innocently caught up in conflict and darkness; we share music today as the voice of triumph over hatred and violence.

Thank you also to the ACT Government through artsACT and the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts for their valued and crucial support for all CSO activities. The CSO is very fortunate to have their ongoing

advocacy in these tough financial times for the arts.

The CSO has more inspiring music in store this year, with the final ActewAGL Llewellyn Series concert Violin on November 8th and 9th. CSO Chief Conductor & Artistic Director Nicholas Milton AM returns to lead the orchestra in this brilliant finale for the 2017 season. Guest Artist Harry Bennetts tackles the fiendishly difficult Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, and we conclude the year with Sibelius’ Symphony No 2. If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, I urge you to do so quickly as this is a not-to-be-missed event.

In 2018 there is a full year of diverse and exhilarating music with the CSO. If you enjoy today’s music, next year’s Canberra Weekly Matinee Magic concert, Divas and Crooners, will have you tapping your toes. Also in 2018, we’ve added a fifth concert to the flagship ActewAGL Series, and the Shell Prom has moved to conclude our season on 1 December. The CSO’s landmark Australian Series at the National Portrait Gallery will feature a saxophone orchestra (!) and we continue our commitment to commissioning and performing new Australian works in this cutting-edge series.

Treat yourself to a year of intriguingly diverse concert experiences by sampling one performance from each Series—or consider tickets as a thoughtful Christmas gift. If you’d like to know more, please check out our website (www.cso.org.au) or call us at CSO Direct 6262 6772, 10am–3pm weekdays. We’d be happy to assist in finding the right musical experiences for your taste and budget.

For today, we thank you for joining us and hope that you enjoy your time with the CSO in the golden days of Vegas!

Andy SeymourWith a larger than life stage presence, Andy Seymour has the ability to transform even mediocre material into a compelling tale from the heart. He draws you in & invites you to get to know him.

He doesn’t sing to the audience; he sings to you.

The son of an itinerant preacher, Andy was raised amidst a dynamic Gospel

music environment as he travelled the country back roads of Australia. A born drummer, Andy was playing in his father’s energetic Gospel services at age 8, and was playing professionally by the age of 12.

He’d listen to small-town radio stations playing their eclectic blend of songs and even as a boy, felt akin to those who bared their soul in song. Music genre was irrelevant; they were songs from men with broken hearts.

This fascination cultivated a love for the voices of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Elvis, Tony Joe White; even the Crooners Dean Martin & Nat King Cole left their impression.

Andy’s diverse passion for music makes him as versatile as the songs he delivers.

He was the voice behind Chili Hi-Fly’s #1 world-wide dance hit, Is it love in 2000, he has performed for British Royalty & performed in Las Vegas with his Elvis Gospel tribute. He’s appeared in numerous film & TV roles and & hosted his own Singing chef cooking show on US Television.

Spending much of the 2000’s based in the USA, Andy’s hi-energy performances worked their magic on American audiences who fell in love with this big Aussie singing their heartland music with genuine passion.

“I’m thrilled to work with Rhonda; she’s beautiful, graceful & a knock-out Entertainer—Who’s the lucky guy then!” Andy Seymour

NOTES

Las Vegas in the 1950sIn the 1950s it became clear what the future would hold for the small desert town soon to be a metropolis built on gambling, vice, and entertainment. Nestled in the Las Vegas Valley of the greater Mojave Desert in Nevada, the city of Las Vegas quadrupled in population as numerous lavishly decorated hotels and casinos popped up, many of them owned and operated by the mob.

What once was a city of military training operations was now the cultural capital of wild, late-night, exotic entertainment and gambling encased in iconic neon signage; an image consolidated by the annual 8 million

tourists and $200 million pumped through casinos. This was unaffected by the nuclear fallout from the nuclear testing program operated only 100km outside of the city. In fact many residents and tourists would marvel at the mushroom clouds visible from many parts of the city.

It was from this time forward that Las Vegas would become the leading financial, commercial and cultural centre for the state of Nevada, and earn the title of Sin City for its tolerance of adult entertainment and dominant criminal underground.

The Vegas Lounge ExperienceIn addition to the ever-present gambling scene, Vegas casinos were renowned for their first-rate lounge entertainment. Each new casino owner sought after the highest quality entertainers and hired the finest local musicians for their in-house orchestras.

The casino lounge was the place to be with drinking, gambling, socialising, and live entertainment all packed in to an intimate, casual setting. Lounge acts were famed for being personal, exhilarating, and often improvised. Such entertainment supported Sin City’s reputation as a place where anything could happen.

The popularity of live performance and the strong competition between venues saw owners look to Hollywood for the biggest stars in the country to be headline acts in their lounges.

Star salaries climbed astronomically as competition grew with weekly budgets exceeding $30,000. Such a cost was little trouble for the mob-operated casinos. Many stars were pleased with their personal management style and protection, and often turned a blind eye to the mob’s more sinister dealings. Such a time was the largest price-war in US entertainment history.

Artists from the pastJudy GarlandSinger, actress, and vaudevillian Judy Garland was renowned for her contralto vocals and attained international fame that continued throughout a career spanning more than 40 years. Well-remembered for her roles in The Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis, Judy experienced a career revival through stage performances centred on reviving vaudevillian tradition. Many of her performances were covered by Vegas acts due to their popularity and show-biz nature.

Marilyn MonroeFamous for playing ‘dumb blonde’ characters, Marilyn Monroe become one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s. Monroe was one of most marketable Hollywood actresses with most notable performances in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire. She was disappointed at being typecast for future roles and later established her own film production company. This led her to pursue method acting at the Actor’s Studio. Monroe’s performance style and sex-appeal lent itself to the Vegas lounge scene with many acts covering her works. To this day, she continues to be considered a major popular culture icon.

Frank SinatraFrank Sinatra had been experiencing a decline in his career in the late 1940s, but found renewed fame when he made Las Vegas his home from 1951-94. He brought his own sense of style to Las Vegas and helped its reputation evolve from a Western town to a world class entertainment destination. Numerous Hollywood celebrities headed to Las Vegas to watch his show. Famous actor and fan Gregory Peck said that Sinatra captured the world’s imagination with a “sense of free-floating fun and frolic.”

Bobby DarinLegendary entertainer Bobby Darin rose from poor beginnings in Harlem and the Bronx suffering from severe illness affecting his heart for life. Fuelled by his ambition to succeed in show business, Darin found fame at ATCO Records with his first records Splish Splash and Dream Lover. Darin appeared in Vegas lounges at the young age of 23 wowing audiences with close friend George Burns. Darin continued in his career primarily as a song writer and composer for film and television and his own record works.

Philanthropy The Education Giving CircleA little over a year ago we launched the Education Giving Circle. A small group of like-minded CSO folk came together, for a variety of reasons, to support the CSO’s Education Program and to add a burst of vitality in the music education sector. Earlier this year we engaged a music education specialist to review and reimagine the CSO’s Education Program, and provide a strategic and creative plan for 2018-2020.

Pleasingly, we’ve made progress, beginning with a ‘warts and all’ review of our existing program, and its place in the wider educational landscape. And WOW! Talk about a sobering read. Given the chance to constructively criticise, casual observers, invested teachers, CSO musicians and schoolkids of all ages (monosyllabic and chatty) really let us know what they thought.

The Education Giving Circle funded this important groundwork. Now, we’re populating next year’s calendar with a very different CSO education program. Ambitious yet achievable, the CSO’s new education program is backed by realistic funding targets and an overarching organisational will to see it succeed.

If you’d like to contribute to this important work, please get in touch with me.

2018 Subscription donationsA big thank you to CSO concert goers who’ve made a donation with their subscriptions to the 2018 season, full as it is with an extra Llewellyn concert.
