WELCOME Welcome to this evening of sublime music that scales the joy and tragedy of love and loss through song. We are delighted to showcase rising stars from Pacific Opera, led by Pacific Opera’s Artistic Director Simon Kenway for this passionate Gala

concert. I would like to thank Christine Douglas and everyone at Pacific Opera for their fantastic collaborative work on this special event. Thank you also to the ACT Government through artsACT and the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council for their support.

It is astonishing that we have already reached the halfway point of 2018, and for the CSO, this means the 2019 season launch is right around the corner. Mark your diaries for Tuesday 14 August when the exciting new season of music will open. For those of you who subscribe, you will receive the full story brochure in the post from that date. For those who are interested in discovering music that might be tempting, our website will reveal all. Whatever your taste, hear about it first by joining our mailing list at cso.org.au.

Meanwhile, still in 2018, we have three orchestral concerts in the ActewAGL Llewellyn Series with their accompanying Recitals by the soloists at Wesley, the Canberra Weekly Matinee Magic symphonic swing concert and, family favourite, the Shell Prom in the gardens of Government House. On a smaller scale, the CSO Australian Series, held at the National Portrait Gallery, will bring you more world

premiere music in August and October, and Strings in the Salon mixes music with a gourmet luncheon at Monster in NewActon during July and September. Clearly, the CSO is out and about with diverse experiences for you to sample!

Your CSO is also working to extend the experience of music beyond the main stages to children, the elderly and others in the community who might not otherwise be able to benefit from the experience of live music. Our new Music in MY School CSO Education program recently delivered 12 interactive, curriculum aligned concerts in primary schools and thanks to generous support from Ginninderry and Icon Water, we were able to take this program to Queanbeyan for the first time and Yass in the near future.

CSO Community programs continue support wellbeing in our community and region with free music events for the elderly and people with disabilities. We are seeking to extend these programs to people in the surrounding region who otherwise have no access to these experiences. There is no shortage of demand, only the funds to make it happen. If you would like to invest in your community by donating to the CSO for Education, Community and Regional music, please consider a tax-deductible donation to our One4One campaign which you can access on our website: cso.org.au

For this evening, thank you for joining us for this wonderful gala event, and thank you for sharing our belief that life is better with music!

2018 CSO OPERA GALA LOVE AND LUST GIUSEPPE VERDI (1813–1901)Prelude to Act I from La Traviata

The melancholy strings that open the Prelude to Verdi’s 1853 opera La Traviata foreshadow the tragic end that awaits the heroine, Violetta. Verdi intended his opera – based on a play, La Dame aux Camélias, adapted from Dumas’ novel of the same name – to be contemporary, but due to the risqué material had to revise the setting to the 17th century to get by the Venetian censors. The opera tells the story of a courtesan, Violetta, who leaves her life of partying in the city when she falls in love with Alfredo, but the disapproval of Alfredo’s family and Violetta’s consumption doom their love.

GIOACHINO ROSSINI (1792–1868)Una voce poco fa from The Barber of Seville

The libretto of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) was based on the first of three plays by Pierre Beaumarchais to recount the antics of the clever barber Figaro. It is to Figaro that Count Almaviva turns in order to win the heart of Rosina and outsmart her greedy guardian Bartolo, who plans to marry Rosina for her dowry. The opera’s premiere at the Teatro Argentina in Rome in 1816 was a disaster, but The Barber of Seville has become a much-loved staple of the repertoire and it is music like the florid aria, Una voce poco fa that has assured the work’s immortality. “A voice has just resounded in my heart,” Rosina sings of Almaviva in Act I, the Count having impressed her in the disguise of Lindoro, a poor student.

VERDICome dal ciel precipita from Macbeth

Shakespeare was a lifelong source of inspiration for Verdi – he would draw on The Merry Wives of Windsor and Othello for his final operas—but his first adaptation of the Bard’s work was Macbeth in 1847. Banquo sings the brooding bass aria Come dal ciel precipita (How the darkness falls from heaven) in the opera’s second act. Outside Macbeth’s castle, Banquo tells his son of his misgivings about the new king, before he’s beset by murderers and calls out for his son to flee.

VERDISul fil d'un soffio etesio from Falstaff

The last of Verdi’s 28 operas, Falstaff – which premiered at La Scala in 1893 – takes its libretto from Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV parts 1 and 2. The action revolves around the drunken knight Falstaff, who tries – unsuccessfully – to seduce two women at the same time to get his hands on their husbands’ money. In a plot to repay Falstaff for his misdeeds, the opera’s characters dress as supernatural creatures to ambush Falstaff at midnight in the woods. Nannetta is dressed as the fairy queen and sings the aria Sul fil d'un soffio etesio to call her ‘fairies’ out of hiding.

MUSIC NOTES

PUCCINIE lucevan le stelle

E lucevan le stelle (And the stars shone) from Puccini’s 1900 opera Tosca is a tenor star vehicle to rival Nessun dorma. Opening with sombre clarinet, the aria is sung by the painter Mario Cavaradossi in the opera’s final act. Imprisoned and awaiting his execution, he begins to write a letter to his lover, the singer Tosca, having traded his last possession, a ring, to have it delivered by a guard. But instead he is overwhelmed by memories of Tosca.

RICHARD STRAUSS (1864–1949) Es gibt ein Reich from Ariadne auf Naxos

A wealthy man invites two groups of performers to his house in Strauss’ opera Ariadne auf Naxos, a burlesque troupe and an opera company, but dinner runs long, and (since both acts have been booked and paid for) both performances must take place at the same time, with comic, but also very beautiful, results. The Prima Donna – who plays Ariadne in the opera within the opera – sings Es gibt ein Reich (There is a realm), describing the land of death, where she will escape her pain at having been left by Theseus.

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770–1827)Mir ist so Wunderbar from Fidelio

Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, tells the story of Leonore, who disguises herself as a man, Fidelio, in a plot to save her husband from his wrongful imprisonment. She gains the trust of the prison warden Rocco, but also the heart of Rocco’s daughter Marzelline – much to the chagrin of Jaquino, who is in love with her. Mir ist so Wunderbar (A wondrous feeling fills me) from the first act, sees Marzelline, Fidelio, Rocco, and Jaquino all singing about Marzelline’s feelings for Fidelio, in an interweaving number dubbed the Canon Quartet.

JULES MASSENET (1842–1912)Méditation from Thaïs

The symphonic intermezzo, Méditation, played between the two scenes of the second act of Massenet’s 1894 opera Thaïs, has become more famous than the opera itself, finding a life of its own in the concert hall. The beautiful violin solo, accompanied by harp, accompanies a period of reflection following an encounter in which the Cenobite monk Athanaël attempts to convince Thaïs, a courtesan and devotee of Venus, to give up her life of luxury and turn to Christianity.

MASSENETIl est doux, il est bon from Hérodiade

The exquisite soprano aria Il est doux, il est bon (he is good, he is kind) from Massenet’s 1881 opera Hérodiade – a retelling of the biblical story of John the Baptist, Salome, Herod and Herodias based on Flaubert’s novel Hérodias – is sung by Salomé as she searches for her mother Hérodias in Jerusalem. She sings of her determination to find her mother and the kindness of the prophet Jean (John the Baptist) who gave her comfort in her absence.

LÉO DELIBES (1836–1891)Sous le dôme épais ‘The Flower Duet’ from Lakmé

Delibes’s 1883 opera Lakmé is set in British India and the first act takes place in a shady garden, the secret refuge of Nilakantha, a Brahmin priest who has been forbidden to practise his religion by the British and seeks revenge. He leaves his daughter, the priestess Lakmé, with her devoted slave Mallika while he goes into town to finalise arrangements for an important religious festival and procession the next day. In the wonderful ‘Flower Duet’, Lakmé suggests to Mallika that they pass the time by floating down the river, under the shade of the flowering creepers.

MUSIC NOTES

PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY (1840–1893)Polonaise from Eugene Onegin

Based on a novel by Pushkin, Tchaikovsky’s lyric opera Eugene Onegin tells the story of a man who brutally rejects the advances of a young and naïve girl, Tatyana, and carelessly gets into a fatal duel with his friend Lensky. The Polonaise – a stately Polish dance – comes from the opera’s third act. Five years after the duel, after travelling around Europe, Onegin meets Tatyana by chance at a ball. Now married to a Prince, it is her turn to reject him, and he is left alone at the end of the opera.

TCHAIKOVSKYKuda, kuda vï udalilis from Eugene Onegin

In Eugene Onegin’s second act, at a ball in honour of Tatyana’s name day, Onegin is irritated by gossip – and by his friend Lensky, who convinced him to come to the ball in the first place. Out of spite, he dances and flirts with Lensky’s fiancé Olga, the conflict escalating until Lensky challenges him to a duel. The next morning, waiting for Onegin to arrive for the duel, Lenksy sings, “Where, where have you gone, O golden days of my spring,” reflecting on death and his love for Olga.

ALFREDO CATALANI (1854–1893)Ebben! Ne andrò lontana from La Wally

The title role of Catalani’s opera La Wally, set in the Austrian Tyrol, is the free-spirited girl Wally, who falls in love with the son of her father’s enemy, Giuseppe Hagenbach. Vincenzo Gellner is in love with Wally and tells her father of his suspicions about Giuseppe. Wally’s father insists she marry Gellner within the month, or leave his home forever. In the aria Ebben! Ne andrò lonana (heard more often than the opera, which is difficult to stage due to its final tragic avalanche scene) she tells her father she’d rather take her chances in the alpine snow.

VERDI Caro nome from Rigoletto

Delicate flute lines introduce Caro nome from Verdi’s Rigoletto. The dream-like aria is sung by Gilda, the hunchbacked Rigoletto’s daughter, one of Verdi’s youngest, most innocent heroines. The lecherous Duke of Mantua – in whose service Rigoletto is court jester – has overheard Gilda speaking to her nurse about a young student who charmed her in church. The Duke takes advantage of this and presents himself as a student, named Gualtier Maldè, declaring his love and winning Gilda’s affections. In this aria she sings of her new love, weaving charming variations around a simple melody.

VERDIStorm Scene from Rigoletto

The storm scene is the dramatic climax to Rigoletto, played out against thunder and wind painted vividly by the orchestra. The Duke of Mantua has been lured to the house of assassin Sparafucile, by the assassin’s sister Maddalena, and with the storm approaching he decides to spend the night. He sings a reprise of his famous aria La donna è mobile (Woman is fickle), as he retires to bed. Maddalena, now in love with the duke, begs Sparafucile not to kill him – but the assassin needs a body to give to Rigoletto. Gilda, eavesdropping outside, overhears this and knocks on the door, knowing she is sacrificing herself to save the Duke.

VERDILibiamo ne’ lieti calici from La Traviata

The brindisi from La Traviata is opera’s most famous drinking song. Libiamo ne’ lieti calici (let’s drink from joyful cups) introduces the two lovers, Violetta and Alfredo, in La Traviata’s first act. At a party at Violetta’s house, Alfredo’s friend Gastone, along with Violetta, convinces Alfredo to show off his voice, so he sings this song about love and drinking, soon to be joined by Violetta and the chorus.

JOHANN STRAUSS II (1825–1899)Im Feuerstrom der Reben from Die Fledermaus

If the Champagne Trio from Johann Strauss II’s comic operetta Die Fledermaus is not quite as famous as Verdi’s brindisi, it’s every bit as bubbly. The composer known as the Waltz King based the operetta – a farcical web of mistaken identities, disguises and practical jokes set at a ball – on a French vaudeville play, Le Réveillon. The trio Im Feuerstrom der Reben (in the fire stream of the grape), from Die Fledermaus’ second act is a tribute to the pleasures of champagne – which is blamed for everybody’s behaviour in the opera’s finale.

Let us know your thoughts

Wish the ABC would record concerts for broadcasting.

Thank you kindly to all the orchestra members for their dedication and

excellence in their craft.

I love the variety of people you attract to your concerts. I like that the different series provide different experiences. You

make classical music accessible even to those of us who don't know a note.

Good to see more women featured in the 2018 program.

I enjoy it when the conductor introduces and talks about the works. This makes the

music much more accessible.

CSO DEVELOPMENTMUSIC IN MY SCHOOLDuring the past two weeks the CSO presented the first concerts as part of the Music in MY School program to schools in north Canberra, Belconnen and Queanbeyan. It has been a pleasure to work with educators, administrators, partners, musicians and kids. In its inaugural year selected schools have been invited to participate at no cost to the schools.

This community-driven program provides inspiring and meaningful classical music experiences to primary school students in the ACT and the region. Based on a year-long partnership with selected schools, Music in MY School empowers generalist teachers to bring music into the classroom, making music a means for enrichment and enjoyment throughout the school year.

We’ve supported educators with professional development ahead of the performances and teaching notes designed for educators without prior music experience were delivered to schools in Term 1. Over the last fortnight, CSO musicians visited each school to deliver high-quality, interactive performances of the music the students had been connecting with in the classroom. Anecdotally, this resource has been well received, with many teachers delivering it with gusto!

Each performance was led by a drama specialist, and tailored to specific age groups so that all students were engaged and excited. The children’s joy was plain to see with some very familiar with the music. The delight on the faces of CSO musicians was uplifting.

The new program has been made possible by generous support of partners and donors from the Canberra region. The CSO’s Education Giving Circle funded a review of existing CSO programs and the development of a meaningful and curriculum-aligned program that addressed the current needs of teachers, parents, and students.

Ginninderry and Riverview Developments are the inaugural CSO Education Partners, supporting the program in Belconnen and the Yass Valley, and Icon Water’s support enabled us to bring the program in the Queanbeyan Palerang region.

Our ultimate goal in creating Music in MY School is to share our joy of music with every child and teacher involved in the program, knowing that quality musical education brings myriad benefits to children’s academic, social, and personal development.

We look forward to reconnecting with the students and teachers throughout the year as they continue their musical journey with CSO Music in MY School.

2018 TAX APPEALThis year’s Tax Appeal is centred on the One4One fundraising campaign, where your contributions will support our community programs. We’re aiming to meet or surpass the ACT Government’s generous funding of the CSO’s community programming. Matched fundraising has proven crucial in securing investment from new sources. Now, we are asking for leaders of industry and individuals to support our programs and invest in our community so we can do more.

A successful One4One fundraising campaign ensures continuation of the CSO’s community and education activity, and lays the foundation for new programs in 2019.

Our target is $107,000. We’re now over $50,000 and you can help us make our target by donating at cso.org.au/one4one.
