CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 1, Week 8, 21st March 2019
Camperdown
Life can never be too colourful, too exciting or too much fun! Prep – Year 6 students were treated to a Circus Challenge last week when they took part in a hands-on experience that was fun and engaging. Students were actively involved in physical and creative activities through a whole school performance and individual workshops. The two presenters, aka Ringmasters, performed feats that wowed and amazed our students, keeping them on the edge of their seats. Our Prep students reminisced with a smile as they wrote:
“Last week, the Australian Circus came
to visit us, it was:
Magic
Fun
Awesome Good
Fantastic
Brilliant Insane
Amazing
Cool”
Prep – Year 6 students found the Circus Challenge very
entertaining before learning
some circus tricks of their own.
Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
Every day is the right day to stand up as
an individual for respect, tolerance and
inclusion. Last Friday's National Day of
Action against Bullying and Violence
was an opportunity for students to
coordinate efforts and publicly celebrate
the inclusive values of their schools.
At our Senior Campus, Social Justice
Captain Zoe Wilkinson led a team of
students to organise and run activities that celebrated
teamwork and communication. The focus was on having fun
and making connections across year levels and friendship
groups.
It is widely understood that adults play a significant role in
shaping children's attitudes and behaviours. The way we talk
about others, respond to offensive comments, include or
exclude, stand by or take action, sends a strong message about
who and what we value. In turn, the awareness and integrity
of our young people in matters relating to tolerance and
diversity, as evidenced in Friday's student-driven anti-
bullying activities, adds value and energy to public discussion
and signals that our future is in capable hands.
Educating young people about the harmful effects of bullying
and taking proactive and responsive steps to maintain a safe
and supportive environment for all is a responsibility taken
very seriously by Camperdown College. Our Bullying and
Harassment Policy is due for review as part of the regular
School Council cycle and changes are being made to ensure
that the school's position and procedures are absolutely
clear.
The draft with changes will be included in the next big
newsletter and I encourage families to read and discuss it
over the school holidays. Feedback prior to the policy being
finalised is strongly encouraged and can be written onto the
hard copy or emailed to the College’s official email address.
Consistent with our Camperdown College Mutual
Accountabilities (attached), we can all take action to protect
our Camperdown College’s positive culture.
Last Friday's devastating events in Christchurch, New
Zealand, have served as a shocking illustration of intolerance
and hatred-fuelled violence. Our young people are
understandably confused and shaken by events that are
utterly opposed to the values and practices that underpin our
everyday operations and interactions here at school.
Through our Indonesian language program we are very
fortunate to enjoy a sister-school relationship with SMPN 2
Leuwisadeng in West Java. The kindness and hospitality
extended by our Muslim friends during our previous visits to
the school profoundly affected all students and staff who
were present. At Camperdown College we will continue to
promote, model and live our values of respect, caring and
responsibility, and celebrate the similarities that connect us
all across time, culture and place.

Parent Teacher Interviews:
Thank you to parents who attended Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday. We always appreciate you giving
up your time to attend in order to discuss the best ways that we can all work together to bring about maximum
learning growth.
Greater Western Swimming:
We wish the eight representatives who will be swimming in Horsham tomorrow every success as they compete
at the next level. Congratulations to Bailey McDonald, Olivia Maskell, Zoe Wilkinson, Jack Helmore, Annabel
Lucas and Eliza O’Neil for making it to this level.
Congratulations:
Congratulations to Bailey McDonald, Paddy Baker and Tom Baker who represented Bookaar Cricket Club in the U/16 South West
Cricket Association grand final last weekend and took out the flag for the second year in a row. Special mention to Bailey who was
named man of the match in the grand final and who also won the bowling aggregate for the league.
School Immunisation Program:
Students in Year 7 and 10 received information last week about the School Immunisation Program conducted by the Corangamite
Shire. If you would like your child to participate in this program, signed consent forms must be returned to the Senior Campus Office
by Friday 5th April.
National Day against Bullying and Violence:
Social Justice Captain, Zoe Wilkinson, along with other enthusiastic members of the Social Justice Committee led the way on Friday
to celebrate National Day against Bullying and Violence. Joining 5,726 schools and 2.4 million students Australia wide, the students
participated in activities at recess and lunch time aimed at improving team work and celebrating individuality. It was pleasing to see
so many students and staff involved and spreading the message: Bullying. No Way! Take action every day.
Interschool Golf:
Tom Baker, Bailey McDonald and James O’Neil competed in the secondary schools golfing tournament last Friday. The boys played
very well and held their own against students with lots of golfing experience. Thanks to Kathryn Robertson for accompanying the
students.
Grand Prix:
Year 9/10 Small Engine elective students got to taste the Grand Prix last Friday. Leaving school at 7am and returning at 10pm, the
students were able to embrace all facets of this event. Students enjoyed participating in some of the hands on activities, watching trials
and inspecting the race cars. Thanks to Chris Brooks and Jesse Van for taking the students to this event.
VCAL Community Meal:
VCAL students catered for the first community meal for this year last Wednesday. The students prepared a scrumptious menu and
enjoyed serving, sharing the meal and interacting with the guests. Thank you to staff who donated the food for this meal.
NAPLAN:
This year all NAPLAN testing for students in Year 7 to 9 will be conducted online. Students will complete all four tests – reading,
writing, language conventions and numeracy on a firewalled area of their laptops. Current Year 8 and 10 students trialled this process
towards the end of last year. Important dates for Year 7 and 9 students are:
28th March: Coordinated Practice Test (to test that the system can carry the load Victoria wide)
14th – 24th May: NAPLAN testing window. We have scheduled tests for Tuesday 14th through until Tuesday 21st May.
The final days will allow for catch up tests.
Teen Mental Health First Aid:
Year 9 students have graduated with a certificate after undertaking the Teen Metal Health First Aid course. Students attended three
sessions this term focussing on how to recognise and help peers and themselves with mental health related issues.
Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal
Parent Teacher Interviews:
It was fantastic to see so many parents at our Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday afternoon. These
interviews are important for maintaining strong links between home and school and for supporting the learning
of all our students. If you weren’t able to make it to the Parent Teacher Interviews I encourage you to contact
the Junior Campus in order to make a suitable time to talk to your child’s teacher.
Victorian State School Spectacular (VSSS):
On Friday 8th March I had the pleasure of accompanying our thirteen
participants in this year’s Victorian State Schools Spectacular to their
first regional rehearsal at Colac Primary School. Joined by students
from Derrinallum College, Colac Primary School and Colac Secondary College our students
began learning the steps and moves to no less than six different dances. It was wonderful to
watch the enthusiastic way in which our students listened and followed instructions in order to
master each dance.
The students will shortly commence regular dance practice sessions at school in the lead up to their next regional rehearsal in Colac
on Friday 10th May. Special thanks to Sheree Horspole and David and Claire Kempton for transporting students to and from Colac.

Australian Circus Company:
Last Thursday Junior Campus students were privileged to have a visit from the Australian Circus Company. As part of this visit all
students were treated to a performance that included a variety of circus skills before each participating in a workshop to fine tune their
own circus skills. Feedback from our students was very positive, see the front page for a more detailed report.
Prep – Year 6 House Athletics Carnival:
Our annual Junior Campus Athletics Carnival was held yesterday in warm and sunny conditions. Once again it was pleasing to see
high levels of participation in all sports and the positive attitude of our students as they put their best effort into each event. My
sincere thanks to all the parents who helped out on the day, to our teaching and ES staff for their work, and to Mr Attrill for his
organisation of the whole day. Congratulations to all students for their individual achievements on the day, and especially to those
Year 3 – 6 students who will now progress onto the District Athletics Carnival.
NAPLAN Online:
In May this year our students in Year 3 and 5 will once again be sitting the NAPLAN assessments in Reading, Writing, Conventions
of Language and Numeracy. A change that will take place this year is the shift from pencil and paper tests to online assessments. To
assist students to be prepared for the NAPLAN Online assessments students will be able to access an online practice test which will
help them to become familiar with the different formats of the questions, and to understand how the assessments will be conducted
this year. As part of this preparation, all schools involved in NAPLAN Online this year will be involved in a Coordinated Practice
Test next Thursday 28th March. No assessment results will be available from this test as its purpose is purely to familiarize students
with the new test format. Further information about the NAPLAN assessments for 2019 will be sent home shortly.

Our Senior Campus students demonstrated much
resilience by competing in the Year 7 – 12 House
Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 6th March, a day that
gave us four seasons in one day! Students remained
positive and worked hard to earn points for their house in
respective track and field events. There were some
fantastic performances all round and it was great to see
the house spirit and support for each other. There were
plenty of close results; it was only the relays that helped
deem the winner. Well done to Bullen Merri on winning
the athletics shield back-to-back; Manifold was a close
second and Leura third. Age Champions were:
U/13: Derek MacRae & Eliza O’Neil
U/14: Logan Howard & Nikita Carter
U/15: Declan Tickner & Eve Britton
U/16: Bailey McDonald & Terran Buckle
U/17: Angus Gordon & Olivia Maskell
U/20: Jack Helmore & Olivia Henzen
This year, the House Captains introduced House Spirit
awards for students they believed showed exactly what
house spirit and participation was all about. Well done to
the recipients:
Leura: Khris Clementson & Selvia Suson
Bullen Merri: Tom Hutton & Eliza O’Neil
Manifold: Stephen Benallack & Georgia Walters
Congratulations to all participants and well done to those
who have earnt the opportunity to progress and compete
at the HSSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival.
