CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 3, Week 4, 10th August 2017
Camperdown
Prep students celebrated their 100th
day of school in style last week.
On Thursday 3rd August, Camperdown College Prep Students excitedly celebrated their 100th Day of School with a day full of activities orientated around the number 100. This milestone celebrated the wonderful learning achievements all Prep students have made over the past 100 days of schooling at Camperdown College.
The 37 Prep students were joined on the day by parents and grandparents and they participated in a number of activities orientated on the number 100 including 100 grid jigsaws, snakes and ladders to 100, making a 3D tower using 100 cups, writing 100 words, cutting up a picture of themselves into 100 pieces and creating a portrait of themselves when they are 100. Prep students proudly wore an oversized 100 badge to mark this achievement in front of their fellow students.
The day was concluded with a presentation ceremony where students received a certificate to recognise this wonderful occasion, a glow stick for being 100 Days Brighter and a pack of Smarties for being 100 Days Smarter. Students then celebrated with a class party which included a 100 cake – the perfect way to end such a wonderful day.
With so many learning achievements witnessed in the first 100 days of schooling, we can’t wait to see what the next 100 days brings for these wonderful Prep students!
Jacinta Tolland and Kathryn Edward, Prep Teachers
Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
Thank you and congratulations to our
talented instrumental students who
provided an enjoyable evening of
entertainment at this week's winter
concert, under the expert guidance of
our instrumental music teachers Fiona
Pugh and Peter Sharp. Thank you also
to College families for your support of
the students as they gain confidence and experience in
performing for an audience. Our senior students were
wonderful role models for our emerging musicians,
demonstrating the pleasure and satisfaction of learning an
instrument over a long period of time.
Next Wednesday night will be a busy one for the College,
with the Family Science Night providing a fun immersion
experience for students and families, and the School
Council meeting incorporating a visit to the Community Ice
Forum at the Camperdown Football and Netball Club. We
encourage your attendance at either of these important
events.
Our Junior Campus is bursting at the seams at present, with
our regular teaching and Education Support staff joined by
three pre-service teachers, two Year 10 work experience
students and a team of Year 9 BRICKs Ambassadors and
Year 9/10 Community Service volunteers assisting in
classrooms and the yard. Meanwhile, our student
population swells periodically with visits from the
kindergarten children who are enjoying their school
transition program. Learning is taking place at all ages and
stages as experience is shared, new ideas and fresh
perspectives are welcomed, and our collaborative learning
community grows and thrives.
Last week I provided indicative 2018 enrolment figures to
DET and these will form the basis of our future planning.
Our highly regarded Early Years program continues to
expand, with twenty-eight confirmed Prep enrolments for
next year bringing our expected Prep – Year 2 numbers to a
minimum of eighty-eight. Nine new students will join our
own Year 6 students in Year 7 next year, well exceeding
the primary – secondary retention target set by School
Council in our 2015 – 2018 strategic plan. We are in the
very early stages of planning class structures and
timetabling arrangements that will be most supportive of
our students, with the school's growing numbers opening up
interesting possibilities for students beginning or continuing
their educational journey at Camperdown College.
Upon returning from work experience next week, our Year
10 students will participate in pathways planning and make
their initial course selections for 2018. This cohort will be
the first to have access to a wide range of vocational
education certificates offered through our Corangamite
Trade Training Cluster, with some students from our
current Year 9 group also meeting eligibility requirements.
The CTTC flyer in this newsletter provides an overview of
the training opportunities on offer, including Certificate II
Salon Assistant which will be delivered here at
Camperdown College. Exciting times!
Camperdown College is contributing to an ongoing
Department of Education and Training project to evaluate
the state-wide implementation of the Framework for
Improving Student Outcomes. Deloitte is conducting the
evaluation on behalf of DET, gathering feedback about
how schools are implementing the initiatives and the
difference that FISO is making across the system. Our
Principal Class Officers and team leaders shared their
experiences and perspectives earlier this year and a return
visit on Tuesday 12th September will see the leadership
team, teachers and student representatives provide further
feedback about the implementation of strategies designed
to secure excellent learning outcomes for every student.
Our School Council Policy Sub-Committee oversees the
ongoing process of policy development and review, and
the recently rewritten Student Mental Health, Inclusion
and Engagement Policy is testimony to the efforts of this
group. The consultation process has been extensive and
the policy will be tabled at School Council next week for
ratification. Reviewing the Anaphylaxis Policy and
developing a separate Attendance Policy are the next tasks
on the list.
DET processes regarding attendance have been tightened
to ensure that all families fulfil their responsibility to
ensure all children attend school every day. Every absence
requires an explanation and for the absence to be
approved, strict criteria must be met. Five unexplained
absences within a year trigger a process of referral to the
regional attendance officer and/or outside agencies where
required, and our new attendance policy will make these
expectations and processes absolutely clear. Ensuring
students are on time, every day, ready for learning is every
family's responsibility and every young person's right,
laying the foundations for future health, happiness and
success. High expectations and mutual accountabilities
will characterise our new attendance policy, which will be
circulated for school community input later this term.

Year 10 Work Experience:
Year 10 students have nearly completed their two weeks of work experience in a variety of fields. Teachers have
visited the students at their workplaces and feedback from both the students and employees has been
overwhelmingly positive. I look forward to reading the workplace reports upon the students’ return. We have been
fortunate to have the services of Kane Leishman for two days this week. Kane has helped out in the VCAL program
and completed a series of jobs to tidy up the school surrounds.
Later Years Information Session and Career Action Planning:
Later Years Information sessions will be conducted for Year 9 and 10 students next Wednesday 16 th August. Information has been
emailed to parents via Compass and for those families who haven’t yet signed up to Compass, the letter has been sent home with
students. Parents are encouraged to attend if possible. After the sessions, Mrs Maskell will conduct a half hour MIPs (Managed
Individual Pathways) interview with each student. Parents are most welcome to attend these sessions with their children. Please
contact Mrs Maskell to make a suitable time.
Debutante Ball:
Thank you to those parents who filled out expressions of interest for their child to take on the role of flower girl and pageboy. Names
were drawn out of a hat this morning by Parents & Friends executive Kasey Walsh and witnessed by Mardi Johnson. Family history
has repeated itself and Zack Regan and Lila Horspole are the lucky recipients of this role.
Hands On Learning:
The Hands On Learning students were treated to a scrumptious morning tea with Junior Campus staff last week as a thank you for the
work that they have completed around the campus. The students have refurbished the sick bay by installing new cupboards and a sink
and have also tiled around this area. Earlier last term, the students built new shelving for the sport shed.
Moving on, the students have decided to develop their own space in the old gym (dungeon) under the school as currently they share a
home space with the VCAL students in the old canteen. This old gym in recent years has been used as a storage area. The students
will have a big job ahead of them cleaning out the area and they plan to sell excess furniture like old filing cabinets, benches, tables
and seats. If you are interested in any items please contact Mr Attrill.
Year 12 Revision Lectures:
Year 12 students have been given a brochure outlining VCE revision lectures that will be conducted locally. Earlier in the year I
attended a meeting with local schools and Deakin University to arrange lectures that are affordable and easily accessible to students.
These lectures will be held in Warrnambool on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th September and conducted by ACCESS education
and registration is to be done online. I am awaiting an allocation of free tickets and will distribute them as soon as possible.
Tuesday 26th September: Further Maths 9am – 11.30am
Legal Studies 12.15pm – 2.45pm
Maths Methods 3.15pm – 5.45pm
Wednesday 27th September: HHD 9am – 11.30am
Thursday 28th September: English (Camperdown) commencing 8.30am (compulsory attendance)
Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal
100 Days of School:
One hundred days is a big milestone when you’re little. Last Thursday our Prep classes were joined by their families
to celebrate 100 days of school. Together with their families, the Prep students participated in a variety of engaging
hands-on activities. Activities included making necklaces with 100 fruit loops, writing 100 words from around the
classroom, making a cup tower with 100 cups and playing board games, to name a few. All students were presented
with a certificate in recognition of this milestone and the celebrations concluded with a party to celebrate this
significant achievement. Prep students were certainly proud to showcase their efforts to their parents, grandparents
and friends. Thanks to the families who came along to share in the excitement. Also a big thank you Mrs Tolland and Miss Edwards
for their diligent organisation of this wonderful celebration.
Instrumental Music Concert:
Students of all ages, all levels of skill and all degrees of nervousness, came together to create a wonderful evening of music on
Monday evening at our annual Winter Concert. The music was delightful to listen to as all students proudly played selected pieces on
the keyboards, violin and guitar. Congratulations to Mrs Pugh, Mr Sharp and all the instrumental music students for showcasing their
talents. It is great to witness the students’ growth as musicians each year, but perhaps the proudest moments are when we see students
overcome their fears or step-up to support and encourage their friends. Learning a musical instrument is a journey, and at evenings
like this we celebrate the efforts of those who have taken up that challenge.
Scholastic Book Fair:
Thank you to all families who supported our recent Book Fair. Mrs Purcell was delighted in the support given to this lively and fun
event. As a result, the Junior Campus will receive $833 in commission from the sales. Great effort Mrs Purcell and Camperdown
College families!
Year 10 Work Experience:
Over the past two weeks, we have had the pleasure of welcoming Year 10 Camperdown College students, Marnie Belleville and
Alinea Ellerton to complete work experience in our Prep rooms. Marnie and Alinea did a fantastic job helping the students and
supporting the teachers, showing great patience and empathy for the students. We wish both of you all the best for your future studies.

Instrumental music students performed for families and friends at our annual Winter Concert on Monday evening. Keyboard, violin and guitar students from Year 1 to 11 performed a variety of solo and group items. The concert gave students valuable performing experience. Students learnt that each performance is different and they all displayed great musicianship skills, such as focus, adaptability, resourcefulness and resilience.
All prizes will include goodies for children to enjoy with their reading
The concert opened with our Junior Violins: Tida, Charlie and Mercy playing three tunes. This was followed with violin solos by Keira, Lila, Nancy, Georgia and Lewani. Jess O'Connor and Bailey McDonald played two songs each on their guitars with Guitar Teacher, Mr Peter Sharp. Students in our Junior Keyboard Ensemble played the complete Twinkle Variations for piano which was a great achievement, along with a piece called Honeybee. Leilah and Riley played three pieces on the keyboard finishing with Elvis Presley's Love Me Tender.
The Junior Band confidently performed two pieces. The first piece was an Israeli work song called Zum Gali Gali which the audience sang along to. They also played I Wonder, a song based on the tune of the famous Pachabel's Canon. The Junior Campus Band were joined by senior campus violin students Jordan Watson, Tim Fagan and Jack Leonard-Pekin.
Senior Campus violin students, Jordan and Tim impressed the audience with their violin solos. They also performed a march by Handel, followed by a well-known folk tune, Ashokan Farewell with Jack Leonard-Pekin and myself. At the end of the concert, they performed the original string quartet version of Pachabel's Canon in D which will hopefully inspire our up and coming musicians!
Congratulations to our performers: Charlie Burnett, Mercy Rothman, Tida Majidpour, Georgia Walters, Lila Horspole, Nancy Leonard-Pekin, Keira Johnston, Oliver Clark, Stella Horspole, Sadie Walsh, Ishmael Rothman, Riley Stephenson, Leilah Bateman, Lewani Bateman, Jack Leonard-Pekin, Jordan Watson, Tim Fagan, Bailey McDonald and Jess O'Connor.

Kinder children enjoy their first visit to Camperdown College Today saw a very excited bunch of kinder children visit Camperdown College as part of our school’s Kinder to Prep Transition Program. This program exposes students to a school setting making them feel comfortable and familiar before their schooling journey begins in 2018. We had a wonderful morning centred around Literacy based on the story The Hungry Caterpillar. The kinder children made their very own caterpillar out of coloured pasta, buttons, pipe cleaners and a natural branch from our environment. Students attached their caterpillar to their branch and threaded some colourful autumn leaves onto their branch creating a very visual and special hand held mobile.
It was so wonderful to see these students within the classroom environment. They were full of excitement and happiness as they were able to experience what it is like to be a Prep student. We can’t wait to see many of their faces joining our Camperdown College community in 2018!
Mrs Tolland and Miss Edwards loved having the kinder children in the Prep room and our school is very much looking forward to them coming back to complete two further sessions in Library and Digital Technology.

Hi, my name is Otto, and for the past 2 weeks I’ve been at an amazing place called The School for Student Leadership, Snowy River Campus.
It is a school that focuses on building leadership and life skills in Year 9 students, I feel extremely lucky to be taking part in this program and I am looking forward to using the skills I learn here to help make a difference in our community. For most people reading this you won’t know much about this school so I’m going to explain what happens here on a daily basis.
Every day we have a morning, afternoon and evening class, these classes are generally half indoor/theory and half outdoor these classes teach us a range of different skills that we can put into place when working in teams, leading people or in our future careers. But we do have free time too, every Saturday is a rest day and there are breaks between most classes. During these breaks and rest days we can do many things, like go fishing, surfing, travel into Marlo or go bike riding on the tracks around campus, but it is completely up to us students to be organised and to make the required preparation beforehand.
For me the reason I came to this school was to overcome my fear of speaking in front of large groups of people but I can already see that I will get so much more out of being here than just that, if there are any Year 7 or 8 students reading this, I highly recommend that you look into coming here because at only twelve days in, it has been a life changing experience for me.
Otto Leonard-Pekin, Year 9 student
FFaatthheerr’’ss DDaayy SSttaallll It’s that time of year again and we are asking parents/guardians to please make a small donation to this year’s
Father’s Day Stall which will be held at the Junior Campus on Friday 1st September. Ideas for gifts include:
chocolates, socks, playing cards, hankies, mugs, toiletries, golf balls, magazines, car wash supplies, torches, etc.
Please note that if your child will be buying two gifts on the day, an equivalent donation would be appreciated.
Paper bags for you to place your donated item/s in have been sent home today and we would appreciate if all gifts
were brought into the Junior Campus Office by Monday 28th August. All gifts will cost $3 on the day, please feel
free to contact the Junior Campus Office if you have any queries. Gift wrapping on Tuesday 29th August from
1pm at the Junior Campus – many hands make light work!
Junior Campus students will be walking to The Avenue on Tuesday 22nd
August to celebrate Book Week. Students are encouraged to come dressed to
reflect a destination that they would like to escape to with a book (an imaginary
place from a book, a geographical destination, a specific country or a landmark,
outer space or pyjamas if they wanted to escape to their bedroom with a good book).
Students will have the book of the year read to them and take part in other reading
activities whilst in The Avenue.
