Many coaches struggle to find the right balance between success on the court and success in the classroom while empowering student-athletes to enjoy their experiences and letting their individual personalities shine. In three short years as the head coach at California, Lindsay Gottlieb has shown the ability to find the perfect balance in Berkeley by taking the program to unprecedented heights since being hired on April 25, 2011.

Since Gottlieb earned her first head coaching job in 2008-09, only nine coaches have taken their team to an NCAA Final Four appearance, with Gottlieb becoming the eighth coach on that list after leading her 2012-13 California squad to a 32-4 record that included the program’s first Pac-12 regular season championship as well as the first Elite Eight and Final Four bids in 40 years of California women’s basketball. Doing so in her second season in Berkeley, Gottlieb became just the seventh coach in the country since 1990 to coach her team to the Final Four in her first two seasons at the helm of a program.

The 2012-13 season was a record-breaking season for the Golden Bears that culminated in Gottlieb being named a finalist for the prestigious Naismith National Coach of the Year award in addition to being named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year by the media after leading her team to a 17-1 conference record.

Earning praise for her ability to gameplan and make in-game adjustments, Gottlieb became just the fifth coach to win a Pac-12 title in her first two seasons as a head coach in the conference. She is the only active coach in the conference to lead her team to a road victory at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion, a feat she accomplished with a 67-55 victory on January 13, 2013 that ended the Cardinal’s 81-game conference winning streak and announced California’s ascension into the conference and national championship discussions.

Gottlieb’s Bears reeled off a program-record 15 consecutive wins to end the regular season and earn a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In a run that surpassed the combined NCAA Tournament win total of all previous California head coaches, Gottlieb led her team to victories over Fresno State, South Florida, LSU and Georgia to reach the 2013 Final Four. She holds a career NCAA Tournament record of 6-4 in four appearances – once as the head coach at UC Santa Barbara and three at California.

Leading teams to success in the postseason isn’t her only specialty though. In her three seasons at California, Gottlieb has amassed a 79-24 record – more California-bests by setting new marks for most wins in a two-year and three-year period in Berkeley. Already the first coach to win 20 games in her first season with the Bears, her program-record 32 wins in the 2012-13 season helped solidify her position as No. 3 all-time in the Pac-12 for winning percentage in all games as a Pac-12 coach (79-24, .767) and winning percentage in conference games as a Pac-12 coach (43-11, .796). The 32 wins also marked just the 12th time in conference history that a team surpassed the 30-win barrier, going down as the seventh-best single-season win total in Pac-12 history.

Utilizing an up-tempo, attractive brand of basketball, Gottlieb’s approach has helped revitalize West Coast women’s basketball with guard Layshia Clarendon thriving under Gottlieb’s system en route to being selected No. 9 by the Indiana Fever in the 2013 WNBA Draft as the first player based on the West Coast to be selected. Clarendon twice earned All-America honors in two years playing under Gottlieb and was selected as the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year. In total at California, Gottlieb has coached players to four All-America seasons in three years with Clarendon earning honors in 2012 and 2013 in addition to Gennifer Brandon earning honors in 2013 and Brittany Boyd earning honors in 2014.

In her first season at the helm in Berkeley in 2011-12, Gottlieb took Cal back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009 with her Bears advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Gottlieb also led the Bears to a second place Pac-12 finish, just the third time since joining the Pac-10 in its inaugural season (1985-86) that the Bears finished in second place and it was only the second time that Cal has finished with sole possession of second.

    2012-13 Bear faCTs

GAME RECAP (CALIFORNIA 94, CREIGHTON 69): Brittany Boyd was named the Tournament MVP after leading No. 14 California to the Cal Classic championship with a 94-69 win over Creighton. Boyd, who posted her second career triple-double Friday night against San Jose State, nearly matched the feat against the Bluejays with 14 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and five steals in just 22 minutes of action. The win gives California (6-0) its fourth consecutive Cal Classic championship. Reshanda Gray led California with 21 points on a 7-of-8 shooting night while pulling down eight rebounds

BOYD JOINS PAC-12 TRIPLE-DOUBLE ELITE: Brittany Boyd - who last season against Washington State became the second player to record a triple-double in program history (Eliza Sokolowska vs Arizona State on Feb. 9, 1995) - added a new footnote to her growing list of accomplishments after once again hitting the elite mark with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists against San Jose State this season. With her second triple-double, Boyd became just the second player in Pac-12 history to earn more than one triple-double in a career - the other being Nicole Powell of Stanford who was credited with six in her career.

NCAA’S SINGLE-GAME ASSISTS MARK: California holds the 2014-15 NCAA single-game high for assists in a game after dishing 34 (on 46 made field goals) against San Jose State in the first game of the Cal Classic. The mark bests the 33 assists set by Winthrop against Gallaudet (11/15/14) and it is the first time that the Golden Bears have dished more than 25 assists since the team had 26 against UCLA on Feb. 24, 2007 - a span of seven seasons.

RECORD-BREAKING OFFENSE: Behind an early-season sample size, California is on pace to set numerous offensive records this season. Through six games, Cal averages 87.5 points per game - the top mark in the Pac-12 and No. 8 in the NCAA - and is shooting 49.6% from the field - also the top mark in the Pac-12 and No. 4 in the NCAA. The California single-season records stand at 82.0 points (1986-87) and 46.8% (1991-92).

NOT SO GREEN: It took freshman Gabby Green just three games to find her spark and just five games to announce that she is going to be a force in the Pac-12. A 6-2 guard that can create matchup problems at the point or run the 2, Green posted her first career double-double against San Jose State (11/14) with 17 points and 12 rebounds and nearly made it a triple-double after adding 7 assists. The freshman leads the Bears in minutes per game at 31.0

THE GOLDEN DISH: The Bears have been one of the countries best teams at distributing the ball this season with 134 assists on 197 made field goals. Cal averages 22.2 assists per game, a number that ranks No. 2 in the NCAA, and the Bears hold the NCAA’s team single-game high this season after dishing 34 assists in the win against San Jose State (11/28/14). Put into perspective, only twice last season did California dish at least 20 assists in game - first in the 70-51 win against Bakersfield and the second in the 101-98 overtime win against Oregon.

THE ELITE PG: Point guards are first and foremost the leaders and distributors on the court, and senior Brittany Boyd has excelled in both areas so far this season. After dishing 38 assists over the last two weeks, Boyd averages 8.8 assists per game, a mark that is second in the NCAA only to Morehead State’s Almesha Jones (9.0 apg).

A TOP 10 RETURN: California returns to the AP Top 10 for the first time since the Nov. 11, 2013 poll after the Associated Press tabbed the Bears No. 10 this week, a jump of four spots. Last season’s top 10 run lasted just one week after the Bears were upset at George Washington and were not able to crack the top 15 for the rest of the season.

2014-15 Bear faCtssaCramenTo sTaTe (1-4)Sacramento State enters Wednesday’s game with a 1-4 record but have not played a game in 10 days with their last contest being a 99-91 road loss at Saint Mary’s on Nov. 24. The Hornets rely on the 3-point shot with over half (231 of 401) of their field goal attempts coming from beyond the arc, and the team leads the NCAA in made 3-pointers per game at 12.8.

The team holds the NCAA record for 3pt attempts at 58, set against San Diego State this season. Three players average double-figures scoring, led by the duo of Takara Burse (12.2 ppg) and Fantasia Hilliard (12.0 ppg).

California-saCramenTo sTaTe series hisTorySacramento State leads the all-time series, 4-2, but California is on a two-game winning streak with victories in the 1993-94 and 2011-12 seasons. The last Hornets victory was a 65-53 win on Dec. 9, 1977 at Berkeley. Lindsay Gottlieb is 1-0 against Sacramento State after posting an 85-61 win in her second game in charge at Cal on Nov. 17, 2011.

2014-15 Cal sUPerlaTives NEED TO KNOW - BOYD & GRAY (CORN FLAKES & MILK): Brittany Boyd and Reshanda Gray – or “Corn Flakes and Milk” as Gray once described the pairing in a press conference last season – have been profiled to have big seasons by Athlon Sports, Lindy’s and Sporting News magazines. Sporting News picked Gray as a first team All-American and Boyd as a second team All-America, while Lindy’s went even further by selecting both as preseason All-Americans in addition to profiling Boyd as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Athlon Sports also picked Gray as a second team All-American.

BOYD & GRAY EARN PRESEASON PLAUDITS: Senior duo Brittany Boyd and Reshanda Gray have added two more prestigious honors after being named to the watch lists for a pair of the top collegiate basketball awards . The California duo both appear on the John R. Wooden Award Women’s Preseason Top 30 and the WBCA’s Wade Watch List. The Golden Bears are just one of four programs in the country with two players appearing on both lists.

SHE’S ON FIRE!: Freshman Mikayla Cowling has had a hot start to her collegiate career, shooting a blistering 12-of-20 (.600) from 3-point range in her first six career games. Cowling ranks seventh in the NCAA and is one of two freshman in the top 10 for 3pt % this season.

GRAY APPROACHES CAL CAREER RECORD: Senior Reshanda Gray is on pace to finish her Golden Bear career as the program’s all-time leader in field goal percentage. Gray, who was fifth in the NCAA last season with her .591 field goal percentage, is currently Cal’s all-time leader with her career average of .563 (480-of-852), nearly a tenth of a percentage point higher than Kesha Martin’s average of .555 (573-of-1032) that has held for over 20 years since Martin finished her eligibility in the 1992-93 season.

BOYD RISES IN PAC-12 ALL-TIME RECORD BOOKS: California’s Brittany Boyd is steadily rising up the Pac-12 all-time record book and is on pace to finish No. 2 for career steals. With 287 career thefts, Boyd is now 6th all-time and sits 1 shy of matching Michelle Greco (UCLA) for 5th all-time on the list. Boyd is also closing in on the top 10 list for career assists with 559 currently in her career - 18 shy of matching Nicole Powell and Leilani Estavan for 10th all-time.

FORCING TURNOVERS: California grabbed a season-high 15 steals against Missouri to claim the Rainbow Wahine Classic, led by a six-steal effort from Brittany Boyd. The game marked the first time that Cal picked up at least 15 steals since the Bears had 16 thefts at Georgetown on Nov. 17, 2013.

RANGE’S HOMECOMING: Sophomore Courtney Range had a homecoming to remember in Cal’s season opening game at Pacific. Playing just 20 miles from her hometown of Manteca, Range more than doubled her previous career-high by scoring 27 points while also pulling down 11 rebounds and blocking two shots. It was Range’s third career double-double.

A DEBUT TO REMEMBER: Freshman Mikayla Cowling exploded for 18 points in her collegiate debut at Pacific after shooting 6-of-9 from the field. All but one of Cowling’s points came in the second half in which she was 6-of-7 from the field in the final 20 minutes of play while adding seven rebounds.

CONSENSUS TOP 15: California will enter 2014-15 as a consensus top-15 program after earning preseason rankings of No. 14 in the USA Today Sports Coaches’ poll and No. 15 in the Associated Press poll. The Golden Bears also picked up No. 12 and No. 15 rankings in the preview editions of Sporting News and Athlon Sports magazines, respectively.

NEW QUEENS OF THE PAC-12: The media that follow the Pac-12 have decided that there may be a changing of the guard in the Pac-12 after selecting the Golden Bears as the preseason favorite to win the conference title. It is the highest that the Bears have been selected in the preseason poll by the media, ending a string of 15 consecutive seasons that Stanford was the preseason No. 1. The Bears edged out their Bay Area rivals by four points with Cal collecting nine first-place votes, Stanford collecting seven first-place votes, and Oregon State collecting one.

On the same site where the beloved Harmon Gym stood for more than 60 years, the Water A. Haas Jr. Pavilion has risen as a modern sports facility that retains the old building’s famous spirit.

The $57.5 million arena opened in the fall of 1999 and though the structure is 37 feet taller, 28 feet wider and a capacity of 11,877 that doubles that of Harmon Gym, it has continued to keep fans close to the action.

The building is named for Haas ’37, who, with his wife, Evelyn, provided the lead gift for the renovation. A member of the tennis team while an undergraduate at Cal, Haas enjoyed a long career with Levi Strauss & Co., as both chief executive officer and chairman of the board during his tenure with the company. In 1953, Haas and his wife created the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, which has provided more than $260 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, primarily in the Bay Area.

The playing surface in the arena is named for Pete Newell, the Hall of Fame coach who directed Cal to the 1959 NCAA championship and later coached the U.S. team to a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics.

Cal is in its 15th season competing at Haas Pavilion. Since Haas opened, the Bears have posted a 151-74 (.671) mark at home.
