Talon ScratchesCoaching Legends

• ULM could very easily be the only school, women’s basketball or any other sport, to have two coaches on the same staff who are both number retirees of the school.

• E.J. Ok was a two-time All-American and four-time Southland Conference Player of the Year during her illustrous 1982-1986 campaigns, the golden era of ULM women’s basketball. She helped guide the team to the 1985 Final Four with everything from her jump shot to finger roll layup to acrobatic passes. They can still be found on YouTube today.

• Ok has her number banner hanging in the rafters at Fant-Ewing Coliseum, while Stan Humphries has his in between the upper and lower decks at football’s Malone Stadium across the street. He went onto a standout NFL quarterback career after leading ULM to the 1987 I-AA national title. He played in two Super Bowls in his NFL career, winning one with the Washington Redskins, and he eventually was inducted into the San Diego Chargers’ Hall of Fame.

The Humphries Connection

• Assistant coach Stan Humphries is one of two ULM football alumni to have his number retired. He went onto a standout NFL quarter-back career, winning a Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins and eventually being inducted into the San Diego Chargers’ Hall of Fame.

• Sophomore guard Chelsea Tieuel attended Humphries’ high school, Southwood, in Shreveport. Junior forward Stephanie Ratliff’s father also played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1977.

Home Sweet Monroe

• Sophomore guard/forward Daja Chase had an impressive freshman season after a great career at Ouachita Parish High School. She has gained momentum at the start of the 2015-16 season as well, and the Warhawks also have a signee, Trinity Griffin, who reached the 1,000-career point milestone in early December at West Ouachita High School.

• The previous four years before Chase arrived on campus, two of ULM’s consistent starting lineup fixtures were Alexar and Elexar Tugler, twins out of Carroll High School in town.

Carrying the Torch Into 2015-16

• Chase, a 5’10 guard/forward, went on to average 6.6 boards per game in Sun Belt play alone, good enough for the top-10 in the league. She had just 2.4 per game in non-conference play. This year, she has moved up to 8.4 rebounds per game, which is second in the Sun Belt.

• Alayshia Hunter took full advantage of her time off the bench, originally battling for playing time against eventual All-Sun Belt performer Sharnice Brooks. Hunter still finished seventh in the Sun Belt in blocks per game (1.2) and field goal percentage (47.8). She had a career-high 22 points last season at perennial league contender Arkansas State and also had back-to-back season-high 12-rebound performances at South Alabama and at Appalachian State.

• As for this year’s travel, the schedule is quite localized. The Warhawks leave the state only once (Dec. 5 at TCU) before a Jan. 7 tilt at Arkansas State.

Positive Strides

• Jeff Dow’s first year at ULM certainly left Warhawk fans looking up. The 2014-15 squad had its most conference and overall wins since the 2011-12 season, with several contests decided in the final minute. ULM’s final RPI even topped schools from the Pac-12 and Big East.

The OpponentArkansas State comes in with an 8-3 record, including back-to-back road wins at Troy (101-81) and South Alabama (66-53)to open Sun Belt play. The Red Wolves were dealt tough blows in each of their three defeats, falling by four to Florida, one to mid-major power Chattanooga and eight at Nebraska. Aundrea Gamble (17.5 ppg) and Khadi Brown-Haywood (15.2 ppg) are the team’s 1-2 punches, with Brown-Haywood also edging ULM’s Daja Chase for the Sun Belt rebound lead at 8.8 rpg.

Head coach Brian Boyer is synonymous with the school. He is in his 21st year on the staff and has been the head coach for the last 17. Boyer’s first four years on staff were under Jeff Mittie, who had a successful tenure at TCU before being named Kansas State’s head coach two years ago. The Red Wolves finished second in the Sun Belt last year and won the league title the year before.

The SeriesThe Red Wolves have a 23-13 lead all-time, and the Warhawks’ last two wins in the Sun Belt rivalry were both by double-digits in 2011. The Warhawks won 55-45 on Feb. 10 and again 83-57 on Dec. 31, both in Monroe. ULM won the first seven meetings (1983-86), scoring 86 points or more in all but one of those.

Last Warhawk-Red Wolf ContestJONESBORO, Ark. – Alayshia Hunter scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Warhawks, but the ULM women’s basket-ball program fell 69-61 to Arkansas State on Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.

ULM (10-15, 6-10 SBC) shot 44.4 percent from the field, while their defense limited the Red Wolves (18-8, 13-3 SBC) to just 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.

Hunter made a career-high 11-of-16 field goals (68.7 percent), grabbed five rebounds and had three blocks.

Sharnice Brooks collected her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 boards. The senior also had three blocks on the day.

Aundrea Gambled had a game-high 23 points for the Red Wolves.

Last ULM GameMONROE, La. – ULM returned from its 11-day break and lost a hard-fought 57-54 decision to Appalachian State on Thursday in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

There were 10 lead changes over a 3:58 span in the fourth quarter before Bria Carter’s layup with 2:41 left gave Appala-chian State a 53-52 lead for good. Daja Chase’s game-tying attempt from the top of the key bounced off the rim.

“You never really know what to expect in the first game after Christmas break,” head coach Jeff Dow said. “I thought our stamina was less than it needed to be. You try to play catchup with practices after the break.”

The game turned in ULM’s favor after an 11-2 run over a 3:20 span from the third-fourth quarters. Ashley Aune nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key that tied the game at 41, the first since the second quarter. Alayshia Hunter followed up with a shot high off the glass that gave ULM its first lead since the 2:15 point of the first period.

Hunter scored a game-high 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting, all in the second half. She played just four minutes in the first.

Statistical LeadersULM ranks in the upper echelon of the Sun Belt in free-throw percentage (4th, 70.9 percent), scoring margin (3rd, +4.9), field goal percentage (4th, 40.6), field goal percentage defense (2nd, 36.9), three-point percentage (4th, 32.7), assists (2nd, 13.5 per game) and rebounding margin (2nd, +3.9).

Eight players tied or set season or career-highs in the Dec. 19 win over LSU-Alexandria.

New BeginningsThe Warhawks made big strides in Jeff Dow’s first year at the helm of the program, getting their most overall and confer-ence wins since 2011-12. The team won back-to-back home openers for the first time since 2006-07 and came within a second of knocking off LSU for the fifth time in school history. The 4-1 start to this year was the best since 2009-10, the last winning ULM campaign.

Jeff Dow is in his second season at the helm of the ULM women’s basketball program.

Dow, who holds an all-time head coaching record of 226-106 (.681), put forth a solid first impression in his first year in Monroe, leading the Warhawks to their most overall and conference wins since the 2010-11 campaign. He was also one of the most successful coaches in Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP)

history, compiling a five-year record of 108-40 (.729) from 2008-13 at the helm.

Dow guided the Crimson Hawks to the NCAA Tournament three times and won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship in 2009. His last team posted a 23-9 record in 2012-13.

In 2010-11, Dow led the IUP to a record of 19-8, 11-3 in the PSAC West and an appearance in the PSAC Quarterfinals. IUP ranked first in the PSAC in scoring defense at 56.0 points per game and was ranked 19th in the country in that category. The Crimson Hawks also led the PSAC in turnover margin and finished 4th nationally for that statistic.

Dow coached the Crimson Hawks to a No. 7 ranking in the WBCA Coaches Poll in 2008-09. He also got them to No. 19 in 2009-10, No. 17 in 2011-12 and No. 12 in 2012-13.

In the postseason, Dow garnered first round victories in the 2009, 2012 and 2013 NCAA Division II tournaments. He was also the first head coach in school history to win 20 games in his debut season and to win 10 or more games in the PSAC West Division in five consecutive seasons.

Off the court, Dow had a combined 63 student-athletes earn IUP Dean’s List honors and 33 were named PSAC Scholar Athletes.

Dow went to IUP from Anderson University (S.C.) where he

tallied a record of 79-17 and his teams earned trips to the East Region tournament each season. In his three years at the helm (2005-08), Dow was one of just eight head coaches to lead his program to at least one NCAA Division II tournament victory in three consecutive years. He led Anderson to two Conference Carolinas regular season titles and one postseason championship. Dow held an astounding 52-8 record in conference play and also posted a 40-2 home record in three seasons.

In his final season at Anderson in 2007-08, the program finished top-10 in the country in win-loss percentage, scoring defense, rebound margin and scoring margin and was ranked as high as No. 12 in the WBCA national poll before finishing the year at No. 19. For his team’s accomplishments, Dow was selected the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year.

Prior to Anderson, Dow held the No. 1 assistant coaching positions at Colorado State (2002-05), Santa Clara (2000-02), UC-Irvine (1996-99) and New Mexico State (1992-96). He was also the interim head women’s basketball coach at Texas-San Antonio in 1999-2000.

Dow’s first head coaching job came at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1990-92. His team was picked to finish last in the preseason poll in his first year, but Dow propelled them to a third-place showing and reached the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.

Dow started his career as a graduate assistant at Oregon in 1989-90. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and physical education in 1988 and his Master’s in physical education in 1991 from Oregon.

Dow is married to Emily, who is currently pursuing a doctorate in curriculum instruction from ULM and expects to graduiate in May 2016. The couple has two daughters, Chloe (3) and Helena, born April 17, 2015).
