Featured photographer:Kimberly Wynn

Welcome to Caelestia Magazine’s first featured photographer Kimberly Wynn from my Fate’s photography in Orillia, Ontario. My Fate’s photography was established in 2010 in a home studio by a mother of two.

CM: Why did you decide to become a photographer?KW So many reasons, but the main one was to capture memories for my family. The business name stems from that desire, my FATE’S photography, which FATE’s is the initials of my daughters and granddaughters. Faith, Ashlee, Teeghan, Erin and Sophie. It quickly grew from there, starting with friends and more family. Now I cater to clients from many locales and feel so blessed to do something I love so much. Helping people share their stories, capture memories and just feel good when they get a great photo of themselves for a great price.

CM: What type of camera do you use and what is your go to lens?KW: I shoot Nikon, currently a D700 and D800E and my go to lens, I have to pick three. You will almost always find my 35mm 1.4 g lens on the D800E but I always have the 24-70mm 2.8 and the 70-200mm 2.8 close by. I like to be prepared.

CM: Could you walk us through a typical shoot?KW: If I am on location and new to it, I walk around and look at the light. I try to have a list ready for every session after talking with or meeting with my clients. I talk a lot during the session, coaching and moving folks about. I take several photos of each pose. The one good thing about digital over film, but I will be shooting some film sessions soon and am excited to get back into that. In studio, I have the lights all ready to go, do a few test shots and then just get chatting and comfortable. I encourage wardrobe and location changes. I use fun props, mine and the clients. I want every session to reflect the individuals I am shooting.

CM: What is your favourite type of session and why?KW: Truly impossible for me to pick a favourite. I love doing families, watching people interact and catching precious moments. I love doing weddings, and boudoir and couples and babies. So many emo-tions. It is the emotions that are my favourite capture. I am excited when I hand over the pictures and share what I saw and see the smiles and often tears. Then I know I have done my job.

CM: What other photographer(s) inspire you?KW: I am inspired by so many and for all different reasons. Annie Liebovitz and Yousuf Karsh, amazing por-trait photographers. How I would love to have their respect. Imogen Cunningham, you must look at Aiko’s Hands, an all time favourite photo of mine. I love details in photography and looking at parts of my sub-jects. I feel she may have inspired that in me somewhat. A young, up and coming and absolutely amazing photographer with a heart of gold, Benjamin Von Wong. Fine art photographer Brooke Shaden is a new favourite and also Jessica Drossin. I love her textures. Her work is truly breathtaking. I would love to have more time to develop this side of my love of photography.

CM: What was the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome in the business?KW: I could say the stairs up to my studio when I decide to bring in or take out props, but honestly, time is my biggest obstacle. I have the most understanding clients, thanking them every day for their patience. I have so many ideas for concept shoots and for taking my “art” to the next level. I wish my days were 48 hours long and I needed no sleep. Yep, time is my biggest obstacle. One I can assume is experi-enced by all of us.

Brittany Tigera: Tattoo Artist

Brittany Tigera is an incredibley talented tattoo artist from Barrie, Ontario. She currently works at Skinner Ink tattoos on Dunlop Street. She has some work hanging from her wall in the tattoo studio and it is amazing. I was lucky enough to have the owner’s permission to stop by and photograph Britanny and a client.

Caelestia Magazine: When did you know you wanted to be a tattoo artist and why?BT: I’ve always been an artistic person who loved drawing and painting, but I never knew what I really wanted to do with that. My mom told me she didnt want me tattooing (basically pursuing a career where commission is your only means of income) and it was set into my brain.

CM: When did you start tattooing?BT: I was lucky enough to get an apprenticeship when I was 23, I worked at that for a year and then I was on my way!

CM: What are your favourite and least favourite types of tattoos to do?BT: I absolutely love doing bright bold color pieces, and then on the same hand I will never turn down a black and grey mandala piece. I find drawing the mandalas very calming, theres some-thing to be said about symmetry! My least favourite tattoos would be ones that clients bring in from pinterest, Someone already has that tattoo, why would you want to get the same one? I don’t mean that every tattoo you see on Pinterest is going to be trendy, I like using it for reference and seeing other peoples work as well! But the infinity symbols need to stop!

CM:Do you have any that you refuse to do?I wont do any that have hateful meanings. The client will more than likely end up regretting it anyway, and I would rather not be a part of that.

CM: A lot of tattoo artists also paint or do other types of art. Do you do this and do you ever sell prints of that work?BT:Yes, I do lots of paintings on the side or when I have down time and can usually make a few prints of them to sell.

CM: Do you ever feel like you are discriminated against when you are out and about because of your tattoos/profession or do you think that most people have come to accept it more now?BT: I feel like it’s become more acceptable for people to have tattoos now, however I do get a lot of side glances from the elderly. I just smile at them and carry on, I didn’t get my tattoos for them

CM:How would you respond to people who feel uncomfortable coming into a shop for a first or second tattoo?BT: We get a lot of people that are nervous about getting their new tattoo, it’s perfectly normal! I usually end up talking about the process of the tattoo and explaining that if they were unbearably painful then there wouldnt be people covered in them.

CM: What is your take on quality vs price debates that plague most artistic based professions?BT: You get what you pay for. I find it incredibly rude when someone tries to haggle with me on the price. What people dont see is the time that we take coming up with and drawing out ideas, then the cost of supplies and of course our time going into the piece. We have thought about the figure that we are giving you for the piece, it’s not some number we conjured up out of thin air.

CM: C ongratulations on being a mom-to-be! How do you respond to all of those people that say being tattooed makes you a bad parent? BT: Thank you! I don’t really see that as a common opinion.. Sure, I’ve seen the negative articles on the internet about tattooed parents however, I surround myself with those whose opinions matter to me, and I don’t really care about some stranger.

Sherr Hall: Model

Sherr Hall is an amazing, beautiful woman inside and out. She is talented, professional and any photog-rapher would be lucky to work with her. Did I mention she is covered in gorgeous tattoos? CM: When did you decide to start modelling. SH: Well I never really decided to model. Modelling decided to find me. I have a dear friend who is an amazing make up artist and hair stylist and for whatever reason, she decided to ask a very shy and awkward me to be her model. She needed photos to submit to hair magazines. I said yes and was scared to death to try but after one shoot I was hooked and then other photographers started contact-ing me for more shoots. It just grew from there.

CM: When did you get you first tattoo, what was it and why did you get it?SH: My first tattoo was of Tinkerbell. I got her to commemorate a trip my husband and I took to Disney-land. I have several Disney related tattoos actually. I love Disney.

CM: How do you feel about the state of “alternative modelling” on the internet and in print?SH: I love the variety of models that the alternative modelling community accepts as beautiful, like differ-ent styles, sizes, ethnicities and ages. My only concern is the trend of the bigger alternative magazines to show girls barely wearing anything. Sexy to me doesn’t have to mean naked. We alternative girls can be even sexier with clothes on. While I don’t judge anyone who models nude I would still ike to see more modest alternative modelling around.

CM: Do you feel like people judge you because of your tattoos?SH: Generally no. But I know it does happen. That is why I go out with a smile on my face and a kind attitude. I can show them that heavily tattooed people can be some of the kindest people you will meet.

CM: What is the most important part of your life?SH: The most important part of my life is my family. I have two daughters and a husband that are every-thing to me. They always come first.

CM: If you could give any advice to aspiring models what would it be?SH: My advice to aspiring models is first, to be careful who you work with. Make sure they are profession-al and look at their portfolio to see if you like their work. Keep yourself safe always. Second, do your homework, look at poses, practise in the mirror. Lastly, don’t be afraid to actively try to obtain your goals. Ask for what you want. Worst case scenario you get told no. So try again. Never give up. Stylist and Make-Up Artist: Meghan Percival

Meghan is a stylist at Slickers Salon in Orillia, ON. She is an amazing out going person with an great personality . She is creative, energetic, and punctual person. Currently, to contact Meghan it is best if you call Slicker’s Salon to make an appointment. CM: What is your goal in life?MP: My goal in life is pretty simple actually. Be all that I can be and love without boundaries. Life comes with many struggles but If I can accomplish that, things are easy. CM: What is your favourite t.v. show?MP: American Horror Story, hands down. Best concept for a tv series.CM: What do you do in your spare time?WMP: I play a ton of video games but to be honest, since I became a hairstylist, I do a lot of beauty related things in my spare time too. When your passion and play coincide its defi-nitely time consuming.CM: How would you describe your style?MP: My style is whatever I wear that day. I try not to worry about what other people think but in the beauty industry its harder than most to live that way. I like to think I can dress in any specific style and I’m going to pull it off no matter if its the classic “goth” or “country girl” style. Either way youll probably see me in both.CM: What is your favourite piece of equipment that you could not live with out?MP: My flatiron. I can do almost anything with that wonderful tool.CM: Why did you decide to become a hair stylist and make up artist?MP: In the back of my head I always wanted to do something beauty related but I was al-ways ashamed to tell my parents because they expected me to go to school to be a classic “university student, higher education, doctor/lawyer” type. That’s not me at all. So after I did tons of schooling and money wasting, I decided to come clean and do what makes me hap-py. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed and been anal about so why not? It ended up being the best decision I ever made.CM: What is your go to make up and hair on most days?MP: You’ll always see me with big hair. I backcomb the crap out of my hair and I have what I call “volume anxiety” if it is not big enough. I also have a hairspray addiction. For my make-up I always go with my one true love, the cateye.
