Fellow Alumni:

I am pleased to report that since the spring issue of Contact, your Alumni Chapter executive and

dedicated volunteers have been working hard to develop a five-year vision: To be the most active, strongly connected business school alumni group in Canada by 2014.

It’s an exciting time for JMSB grads to re-connect with the school and university. In September, the entire JMSB community will celebrate the grand opening of its new home—the JMSB building—on the corner of Guy Street and De Maisonneuve Boulevard in Montreal.

This fall, the JMSB Alumni Chapter will provide you with several opportunities to take part in the festivities and meet former classmates and professors:

n The JMSB Alumni Chapter has joined forces with the Loyola Alumni Association to host the first Annual Concordia Alumni Golf Tournament on September 10, 2009, at Club de Golf Islesmere, to benefit student bursaries and fund our Alumni Room in the new JMSB building.

n An Alumni Recognition Cocktail will recognize the generous contributions of our alumni towards the new Alumni Room.

n A reunion of CASA and CGSA present and past executive members (including member associations).

n An invitation will be extended to all to come and tour the new facilities!

But don’t wait until the fall to reach out to fellow alumni. Join the official JMSB Linked-In and Facebook groups by visiting our website at alumni.concordia.ca/chapters/faculty/JM/. You’ll become part of a dynamic network of fellow alumni from around the world. And you’ll continue to receive the latest updates about alumni events, programs and other initiatives.

I would also like to welcome the newest addition to our executive team, Vanessa Segovia (BComm 2004), who has recently accepted

the position of VP-Events. A media strategist at Marketel/McCann Erickson, Vanessa has extensive experience in the marketing, communications and event planning sectors. Her mandate will include expanding the roster of events and opportunities for JMSB alumni to network with each other and keep in touch with Concordia.

I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations to all JMSB students who graduated this month. On behalf of the Chapter, I wish you much success in this new phase of

your lives and a warm welcome as the newest members of our vibrant alumni community. Have a great summer! n

The John Molson Women in Business Club hosted in early March its first

Women in Business Conference to mark International Women’s

Day. Participants were inspired by speeches and presentations by guest speakers from various industries. Speakers included Concordia President and

Vice-Chancellor Judith Woodsworth; Deborah Bridgman, Young Adult Division president of Hope & Cope at the Jewish General Hospital; and Mairead Lavery, vice-president, Strategy and Business Development at

Bombardier Aerospace. MBA student Ana Marinescu, who organized the event, said she was pleased with the large turnout and hopes to feature more women-in-business success stories at future conferences. n

While the economy is sluggish, our Co-op students can be your pathway to success for tomorrow. With recent statistics predicting a labour shortage in the not-so-

distant future, the JMSB Co-op Program offers a way to start looking at tomorrow’s employees today by employing them for a semester in their major fields of study. This can reduce your recruitment costs and help you see how our students fit into the culture of your organization. There is also a government subsidy for this program. Many of our Co-op employers have found our students so outstanding that they offer them jobs upon graduation.

The JMSB Co-op Program works in partnership with students, faculty, staff and employers to provide the highest quality and comprehensive education through career development and experiential learning opportunities that equip our students with the knowledge, skills and experience they need to lead successful professional lives.

We accept only our best students into one of our seven Co-ops in Accountancy, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management Information Systems, Marketing and Supply Chain Operations Management.

The program requires six academic terms and three work terms in the student’s major area of study. We do provide structure to help enhance the experiences for both students and employers. We monitor students’ academic performances to ensure they

achieve relatively high grades and that their learning at work is both productive and developmental. n

If this program interests you, please contact us at 514-848-2424, ext. 3950, or at [email protected]. You may also visit johnmolson.concordia.ca/en/undergrad/co-op-education for more details. Prospective employers are also invited to visit co-op.concordia.ca and click on the Employers tab.

“JMSB students are studying at the best business school in Canada,” according to Craig Shannon, chair of the JMSB Advisory Board and managing director and head

of the Real Estate Investment Banking Group for National Bank Financial. “JMSB is naturally competitive. We have a multi-lingual, multi-cultural and global entrepreneurial focus. JMSB grads are attractive because they usually speak at least two languages and they have a cultural upbringing that is valuable to the business world. We have a much better product than people are aware of,” adds Shannon, who has been actively involved with the business school for the past 10 years.

Speaking to the opening of the new JMSB building in September, Shannon says, “The primary goal is to achieve a successful launch. We want to use the opening of the LEED TD Silver certified building as a tool to enhance the reputation of the school within the community.”

The JMSB Advisory Board has pledged more than $25,000 toward a 30-seat classroom of the new building’s second floor.

Georges Paulez, chair of the JSMB Advisory Board’s nominating committee, says the JMSB’s new home is the start of a new chapter in the evolution of both the business school and Concordia. “It’s exciting because there’s a physical location we can point to—it will be a hub for the Concordia community and the city. The building is a state-of-the-art facility that will allow students to focus on greater learning opportunities and the JMSB to attract the best and brightest,” says Paulez, who is managing director of Mirabaud Canada Inc.

A joint faculty and advisory board committee was initiated last fall to help plan the launch of the new building. The committee is now working on finding sponsors for advertising, says Paulez, whose two sons will start at Concordia, one at the JMSB, this fall.

Peter Hall, past Advisory Board president and vice-president and managing director for Giffels Partnership Solutions Inc., says he feels a strong sense of pride when he thinks about the new building.

“I’ve been pushing for this for a long time,” says Hall, who sees the building through the eyes of a builder and contractor. He’s part of Concordia’s Real Estate committee and credits the Molson Family Foundation and Quebec government for stepping up and making the building a reality.

Hall says he got involved with Concordia 12 years ago through a friend and has been motivated to stay on because of the students. “I appreciate the high quality of the students at Concordia, I

believe in the education JMSB provides and I’ve seen that the students from Concordia have great success in competitions and in the real world when they graduate.”

Robert Frances, also a past Advisory Board president and president of Peak Financial Group, says the JSMB is one of the country’s best-kept secrets and it’s time to let people in on it.

“We’re moving into a new house; a place that will unify the JMSB and allow it to grow as one of the pillars of education and influence in the city. It’s a great place to be,” Frances says. “The business world will need visionary leaders. We have a crisis right now and that will be solved by those graduating. The school creates leaders and JMSB provides practical education that people can apply right away. That’s where I got my business confidence.” n

he JMSB has been more than just class lectures, tests and projects; it has

given me opportunity. It has provided a great environment that has made it possible for me to put my practical

knowledge to the test and constantly challenge myself in real-life scenarios. In 2008, I turned a class project about finding food that fits each individual’s dietary needs into reality. The skills I acquired as

a commerce student, president of the John Molson Marketing Association and VP Human Resources for the Commerce and Administration Students’ Association have helped me start and grow my company.

I also continue to organize and take part in JMSB events. Last year, two friends and I spent five days outside for a charity event called “5 Days for the Homeless.” This year, as an alumnus, I spearheaded the “5 Days Montreal” campaign and spent another five days on the streets in front of Concordia University. I was so deeply touched by the generosity of the Montreal community during last year’s campaign that I wanted to help make it a success for Dans la Rue once again. n

Josh Redler lived on the streets outside the GM building for five days and five nights in March to raise much-needed funds for local charity Dans La Rue. For more information, visit 5days.ca

Thirty-six undergraduate students won first prize at the 17th edition of Happening Marketing organized by HEC Montréal. It was the JMSB’s sixth podium finish in the

last seven years and fourth consecutive win. The event includes competitions in academic cases, sports and social activities. Said Sarah-Claude Billette, president of the JMSB Happening Marketing Delegation, “We are honoured to continue JMSB’s excellent track record at Happening Marketing. Our students worked tirelessly before and during the competition; we’re incredibly proud of them. This is just another indicator that JMSB has one of, if not the best, marketing programs in the country.”

The John Molson Marketing Association (JMMA) would like to thank the following coaches for their commitment to Happening Marketing: Mark Haber, Harold Simpkins, Peter Elenakis, Peter Dedicik, Matt Hill, Mike Smouha and Robert Wong.

The JMSB delegation also recognizes the effotrs of Jean-Sébastien Bélanger, VP Executive for the Happening Marketing Organizing Committee, who has been a member of the JMSB HM delegations for the past three years. J.S. worked tirelessly for months preparing for the competition, which ran exceptionally well as a result of his experience and resolve.

The JMMA is also grateful to the John Molson School of Business, Commerce and Administration Students’ Association, Concordia Student Union, Concordia University Alumni Association, Concordia Council on Student Life, Les Consultants LBCD inc. and Rinox for their generous contributions, which made it possible for JMSB members to attend the competition. n

Students on winning streak at competitions

Eight students from the Kenneth Woods Portfolio Management Program classes of 2009 and 2010 delivered an outstanding performance from March 26

to 28, 2009, at the Annual Redefining Investment Strategy Education Symposium portfolio competition at the University of Dayton, Ohio.

Fund Managers placed first in the Undergraduate Division “Core-Style Portfolio” category.

Fifty entries were submitted to the various categories for the undergraduate and graduate portfolios and winners were selected based on their risk-adjusted performances for 2008. The value added from the active management by fund managers that year was 4.62%.

Fund managers also delivered a formal presentation on their management of the portfolio to a private panel of judges from Bahl & Gaynor Investment Counsel and Capital Guardian

Trust Company. Special thanks go to Dr. Abraham Brodt for coaching and guiding the team to victory.

Congratulations to all fund managers and Dr. Brodt for another solid performance during these turbulent times in the markets. n
