1. OVERTUREOrchestra

2. HOW BEAUTIFUL UPON THE MOUNTAINS Tenor & Orchestra

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings; that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good; that

publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth;

3. BREAK FORTH INTO JOY Chorus & Orchestra

Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion;

Break forth into joy; sing together ye waste places of Jerusalem; for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem;

The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all [the] nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

4. WHAT MEANETH THESE WORDS?Tenor & Orchestra

What meaneth these words which are written and have been taught by our fathers? Doth [not] salvation come by the law of Moses?

5. SALVATION DOTH NOT COME BY THE LAW ALONEChorus & Orchestra

Salvation doth not come by the law alone; and were it not for the atonement, which God himself shall make for the sins and iniquities of his people, they

must unavoidably perish.

It was expedient that there should be a law given to the children of Israel, even a very strict law; for they were a stiffnecked people, quick to do iniquity, and slow to remember the Lord their God; a law of performances and ordinances to observe strictly from day to day, to keep them in remembrance of God and

their duty toward him.

Because of the hardness of their hearts they did not all understand the law; they understood not that there could not any man be saved except it were

through the redemption of God.

6. DID NOT MOSES PROPHESY? Chorus & Orchestra

Did not Moses prophesy concerning the coming of the Messiah, that God should redeem his people? Yea, all the prophets who have prophesied ever since the world began, have they not spoken these things? That God himself should

come down among the children of men and take upon him the form of man, and go forth in mighty power upon the face of the earth?

7. FOR HE SHALL GROW UP Soprano and Tenor Soloists, Women’s Chorus & Orchestra

Did not Isaiah say, Who hath believed our report, and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

For he shall grow up as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground; he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him there is no beauty that we should desire him. And after working many mighty miracles among the

children of men, he shall be led, crucified, and slain, the flesh becoming subject even unto death, the will of the Son being swallowed up in the will of the Father.

8. THUS GOD BREAKETH THE BANDS OF DEATH Chorus & Orchestra

Thus God breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death; giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men;

9. HAVING ASCENDED Soprano and Tenor Soloists & Orchestra

Having ascended into heaven, having the bowels of mercy; being filled with compassion towards the children of men; standing betwixt them and justice;

having broken the bands of death, taken upon himself their iniquity and their transgressions, having redeemed them, and satisfied the demands of justice.

10. WHO SHALL BE HIS SEED? Men’s Chorus

When his soul has been made an offering for sin he shall see his seed. And who shall be his seed?

11. THESE ARE HIS SEED Chorus & Orchestra

Whosoever has heard the words of the prophets, all those who have hearkened unto their words and believed that the Lord would redeem his people and have looked forward to that day, these are his seed, they are the heirs of the kingdom

of God. These are they whose sins he has borne; these are they for whom he has died to redeem them from their transgressions.

Yea, all the holy prophets ever since the world began? They are his seed. These are they who have published peace, who have brought good tidings of good, who have published salvation; and said unto Zion: Thy God reigneth.

12. HOW BEAUTIFUL UPON THE MOUNTAINS Women’s Chorus

How beautiful upon the mountains were their feet! How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those that are still publishing peace, and how

beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who shall hereafter publish peace from this time henceforth and forever!

13. ALL SHALL SEE Soprano & Orchestra

The time shall come when all shall see the salvation of the Lord; when every nation, kindred, tongue and people shall see eye to eye.

14. AND THEN SHALL THE WICKED BE CAST OUT Chorus & Orchestra

And then shall the wicked be cast out, and they shall have cause to howl, and weep, and wail, and gnash their teeth; and this because they would not hearken

unto the voice of the Lord; therefore the Lord redeemeth them not.

Behold, and fear, and tremble before God, for the Lord redeemeth none such that rebel against him and die in their sins ever since the world began, that

have willfully rebelled against God, that have known the commandments of God, and would not keep them. For salvation cometh to none such, for the

Lord hath redeemed none such.

15. IF CHRIST HAD NOT COMETenor & Orchestra

If Christ had not come into the world there could have been no redemption.

16. THERE IS A RESURRECTION Soprano, Chorus & Orchestra

If Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there

could have been no resurrection.

But there is a resurrection, therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ.

17. OUGHT YE NOT TO TREMBLE? Tenor, Chorus & Orchestra

And now, ought ye not to tremble and repent of your sins, and remember that only in and through Christ ye can be saved?

18. REDEMPTION COMETH Chorus & Orchestra

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that is the founder of peace, yea even the Lord, who has redeemed

his people.

Break forth into joy; sing together ye waste places of Jerusalem; for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem;

The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

Behold, the bands of death shall be broken, and the Son reigneth. He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be

darkened; a life which is endless, that there can be no more death.

Redemption cometh through Christ the Lord. Amen.

B Y J A N E G R I N E R , L I B R E T T I S T

This text, drawn from Mosiah, chapters 12–16, in the Book of Mormon, is a condensed explication by Abinadi of the centrality of the Atonement of Jesus Christ to the salvation promised by the prophets. Brought before King Noah and his priests, Abinadi calls them to repentance, quotes the prophets, teaches them the plan of salvation, and as a prophet testifies of Christ as the Redeemer of mankind.

The first quotation of “How beautiful upon the mountains” comes directly from Isaiah. In this initial confrontation with Abinadi, the priests make clear their position that if they teach and preach the law of Moses, salvation is theirs. Abinadi responds at length, but the kernel at the center of everything he preaches is that Christ and His Atonement are what power the redemption of His people. He explains the necessity of the laws of performance, but reminds them that Moses and Isaiah both prophesied that the Son of God would come, teach and work miracles, and then deliver himself up to be slain and triumph over death. Abinadi proclaims that all the prophets who ever have and ever will prophesy of Jesus Christ and those who hearken

to them are the seed of Jesus Christ. He then repeats the theme of “How beautiful upon the mountains” and extends that vision to the feet of all those who have ever or will ever testify of the Redeemer and the peace of the promise of salvation.

Abinadi continues his prophetic mission of calling all to repentance by explaining the consequences of their sins. He then plainly teaches that Christ came not only as a prophet,

“speaking of things to come,” but that without his death and particularly his Resurrection there could be no salvation. His last quotation of “How beautiful upon the mountains” is totally Christ-centered, undeniable in its testimony that it is Christ, who from the beginning was prepared, who is the salvation of His people; that having broken the bonds of death, offers eternal life with the Father.

Abinadi’s story is a dramatic, but long one—too long to present in this form. Here we hoped to distill the testimony of Abinadi, and all the prophets, down to its essence—that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Redeemer, and that all those who testify of and follow Him are, by His power, saved into eternal life.

When composing for the voice, either solo or gathered in a choir, I strive to find and bring forth the music which is inherent within the words. This is not a very scientific process. Indeed, the frequently asked question,

"Where do you get your ideas?" can be a frustrating one for a composer—the temptation is to answer, "Walmart," and then smile enigmatically. But the question is a sincere one and the people who ask it are honestly interested in understanding more about how the process works. I can speak only for myself, but here is a bit about how it works for me.

Divine inspiration plays a critical role, but it is only the first step. The image which many have of the composer sitting with pen in hand, waiting to take down the notes being dictated by a heavenly messenger, is profoundly misleading. Inspiration does not

generally come in the form of a finished piece or anything remotely like it. Far more often it comes as a tiny nugget or germ of an idea, something which the composer will then begin to manipulate and mold and refine until it becomes something which can be written down. The inspiration is a sort of nudge in the right direction which doesn't become actual performable music until the composer has applied to it all of the skill and musical understanding which he has been able to acquire through years of concentrated listening, careful training and refined judgment. Thus, the inspiration is a gift from heaven, but it doesn't become fully formed music until the composer has laid upon the altar his own offering of many years' worth of sacrifices of time, effort and devotion.

I'll keep checking Walmart, but…

The initial commissioned work, which premiered in 1989, was Darwin Wolford’s Behold, He Cometh! This helped to establish the foundation of the current

biennial series wherein BYU-Idaho commissions, performs and records major Latter-day Saint religious music. The Sacred Music Series is made possible through generous donations from friends and supporters of the university, including the Eliza R. Snow Society for the Performing and Visual Arts.
