griculture and allied sectors are considered as the mainstay of Indian economy as they are important sources of raw Amaterials for industries, and major consumers of industrial products, particularly fertilisers, pesticides, agricultural implements, etc.. However, rapid shifts in socio-economic, environmental and cultural paradigms across the world, coupled with technological onslaught, have brought agriculture under serious scrutiny. Against this background, emergence of free market economies globally has led to the manifestation of a new spirit of enterprise combining agriculture and industry - “agripreneurship”.
The term agripreneurship is generally used to indicate small business formation in agriculture, under conditions of risk and uncertainty in agriculture. Thus an agripreneur may be defined as a dynamic business manager performing various agri-based activities using different resources viz., physical, financial, human and information, in order to accomplish an economic goal. In view of growing rural poverty and unemployment, intensified by continuously diminishing cultivable land, agripreneurship development is seen as critical for achieving balanced and inclusive growth.
India, with 52% of cultivable land as against 11% in the world, and habited by all 15 major climates of the world, 20 agro-climatic regions, nearly 46 out of 60 soil types, provides suitable ground for agripreneur promotion. Sunshine hours and day length are ideally suited for round the year cultivation. The country is rich in bio-diversity in plants, animals, insects, micro-organisms and accounts for 17% animal, 12% plant and 10% fish genetic resources of the globe, and has 16% of cattle, 57% of buffalo, 17% of goats and 5 % of sheep population of the world. With all these positive factors, agriculture continues to be vital to the economy, contributing 13.2% to the GDP and about 13% of the total export earnings. Standing second in the world in rice and wheat production, first in pulses, fourth in coarse grains, among the largest producers of cotton, sugar, sugarcane, peanuts, jute, tea and an assortment of spices, second in milk, sixth in fish and eggs, in terms of real value added, Indian agriculture sector ranks third in the world, after China and the US.
The foregoing statistics strongly point to the need of agriculture to convert to agri-business, which becomes possible only through agripreneurship development. Spread of agripreneurship culture will help: small farmers to achieve productivity gains by integrating them into local, national and international markets; reduce food cost and supply uncertainties; and improve diet of the rural/urban poor.
The possibilities of agripreneurship include: merely processing the agricultural produce making new products using agricultural produce as raw material; service centres for repairing and servicing agricultural implements; apiculture, feed processing, seed processing, mushroom production, commercial vermin-compost, retailing organic vegetables and fruits, bamboo plantation and jatropha cultivation. Agripreneurship development is seen as the right strategy for improving production and profitability in agriculture and allied sectors.
The Govt. of India has approved the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (Scheme for Agro-Marine Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters), with an allocation of Rs. 6,000 crore for the period 2016-20, to be implemented by the MoFPI. The Yojana is a comprehensive package anticipating the creation of advanced infrastructure with efficient supply chain management from farm gate to retail outlet. While giving fillip to food processing sector, it also envisages better returns to farmers, creating employment opportunities especially in rural areas, minimising produce wastage, and enhancing processed foods exports. The Yojana is expected to leverage an investment of Rs. 31,400 crore for handling 334 lakh MT of produce, benefiting 20 lakh farmers and generating 5,30,500 direct/indirect employment by 2019-20.
ni-msme has always been concerned with agro and rural sectors. The Institute has organised a number of training initiatives, EDPs and ESDPs in food processing domain and other agro related domains. In recent years, ni-msme has been extensively focusing on technology entrepreneurship development programmes in food processing; FDPs for Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and on agro entrepreneurship and agri incubation centres; organic home gardening; and many other streams converging on agripreneurship, both at national level and international level.
We invite aspiring entrepreneurs interested in food processing to make use of ni-msme services for launching their enterprise.
