Michael Schmidt, General Manager
Landmark Building Solutions
Mike is a manufacturing executive with over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry. He joined Landmark in 2012 to lead the transformation of their revolutionary homebuilding division. Mike has held senior management roles at ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel making company, and Magna International, one of the world’s largest auto part suppliers. He is a journeyman Tool and Die Maker and has an MBA from Queen’s University.
Gregor Kolb, Director Business Transformation
Tree Island Steel Ltd.
Gregor leads the newly created analytics group at Tree Island, responsible for the introduction and deployment of analytical techniques. He holds a B.Sc. in Econo-Physics from the University of Ulm, Germany and is a graduate of the Center for Operations Excellence at UBC where he received his Master of Management in Operations Research. Gregor’s other passion is sport – he won a Silver Medal for Germany at the 2005 Junior Rowing World Championships.
Stuart engages industry to unite it with the enthusiasm of talented graduate students, the expertise of world class faculty in Operations Research and Analytics, and a strong professional staff to deliver valuable solutions to industry’s challenging operations problems. He has 15 years experience as a consultant for OR/Analytics solutions. He joined Sauder in 2007 where he oversees 8 to 10 COE Projects each year while teaching graduate courses. He earned a B.Sc. in forestry and a M.Sc. in forestry and operations research.

James has accountability for strategic planning, business transformation, procurement and corporate development at Tree Island. He is a turn-around expert with experience in banking, real estate, retail, transportation, and manufacturing. In addition, James teaches Finance at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and sits on a not-for-profit board. James has a MBA from the Queen’s and bachelors from Simon Fraser.
Gillian has over 15 years of consulting and financial services industry experience specializing in customer strategy, and the related governance, operating model design and processes that deliver an enhanced customer experience, alongside revenue growth. Recent engagements have focused on customer data strategy development, alongside definition of key customer strategies to help enable organic growth including end-to-end definition of a Next Best Offer program and the customer-centric process redesign of key Retail customer interactions.

About the UBC Centre for Operations Excellence
The Centre for Operations Excellence (COE) is an internationally recognized operations research (OR) centre dedicated to providing value to business and academia through projects with industry and research on applied OR methods.
The COE also administers the UBC Master of Management in Operations Research (MM in OR), a specialized 16-month program that provides students with an advanced education in business analytics and operations research.
The COE is dedicated to providing value to business and academia through projects with industry and research on applied OR methods. The COE has published many research articles and completed over 100 industry projects with major corporations in nearly every business sector. Some of these projects have been featured in the national media and have won best practice awards at OR conferences.

Gervase’s career spans three decades of working with organizations to transform their structures, culture and processes away from command and control toward more collaborative work systems. He is an award winning author of over 80 papers and three books in the areas of organizational change, leadership, teams and teamwork. Clear Leadership (2009) has been translated into 6 languages and his Clear Leadership course is taught by over 100 certified instructors worldwide.
Brian Young, CEO
Canadian Direct Insurance
Brian has been CEO of Canadian Direct Insurance since 2000 and is also the EVP Canadian Western Bank with additional responsibilities for CWB’s Trust operations. Prior to joining Canadian Direct in 1998 as its Chief Operating Officer Brian served as VP Commercial Banking for HSBC Canada in Vancouver. Brian holds a Bcom (Finance) from the University of Saskatchewan and over 27 years experience in financial services.
John Sharp, Manager Policy & Procedures and Forms, Vancity
John Sharp leads a multidisciplinary team of professionals transforming how information is being created, managed, and consumed. Prior to this role he was Vancity’s Manager Business Transformation. John began his career as an Economist and been in Finance, IT, Strategic Planning, and Operations. He is currently doing a MSc at Colombia University in New York and holds a MA in Economics and BC in Economics from York, and a commerce degree from the University of Windsor.
Chris MacMillan, Managing Director
Information Mapping
Information Mapping specializes in transforming how organizations create, manage and distribute the critical, yet often overlooked corporate asset of written information. Clients like RBC, Manulife, Telus, ICBC and Vancity engage Information Mapping’s combination of training, services and software to make information “usable” for people and technology. Chris graduated from McMaster University and is is a member of the Society for Technical Communications, and loves big mountain skiing.
Zakir Ahmed, Manager Business Process Improvement, Best Buy Canada
Best Buy Canada Zakir is BT a professional with over 12 years of international experience in such as project management, process improvement, and marketing. The Business Process Management team is responsible for streamlining multiple business areas by integrating process methodologies, business analytics and in-house R&D to generate breakthrough level improvements across multiple projects. Zakir is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt and holds an MSC in Management Science and Operational Research from Warwick Business School UK and is an author and corporate trainer.
Jiamei Bai, Director Business Transformation Tree Island Steel Ltd.
Jiamei’s career has been spent in management and IT consulting. She is currently responsible for the planning and implementation of strategic initiatives, Business Transformation and analytics. She has industry experience in banking, manufacturing, resources, utilities, as well as in the public sector. She is a Professional Engineer, with an MBA from UBC, a MASc in biomedical engineering from UBC and a BASc in mechanical engineering from University of Waterloo.
Struan Buchanan, Senior Manager
Deloitte
Struan has over 12 years of global experience across financial services, asset intensive industries and the public sector. His engagements have included scenario and strategy development, portfolio optimization, operating model design, and delivery of shared services and operations excellence transformations. Prior to joining Deloitte, Struan worked in the acquisition of naval aircraft and the development of propulsion systems.
