HOLDINGS OF BUSINESS RECORDS

A SUMMARY GUIDE

This handlist gives brief details of business records held by the Staffordshire Record Office, LichfieldRecord Office, William Salt Library and Stoke-on-Trent City Archives. Because of the vast quantity ofmaterial involved, coal-mining records have been excluded along with the business records of publicutilities such as gas, water and electricity undertakings. Separate handlists covering holdings of theserecords are available from the Record Office along with one covering farm records as it could be arguedthat these also are business records.

The term “business records” refers to any documents resulting from the day-to-day running of a businesswhether it be a professional partnership, a manufacturing or extractive industry, a village craftsman or aretail trader. The records can encompass everything from share records and minutes of directors meetings, through deeds to company property, accounting records and technical records, to publicity and salesliterature. Relatively few firms kept all their archives and even the most substantial accumulations havetheir own strengths and weaknesses in terms of the type of material contained. Equally, only a smallnumber of firms have deposited their archives as going concerns: records are more often than not depositedor presented when firms cease trading or undergo some major reorganization.

Family papers and solicitor’s and accountant’s papers can contain major archive groups relating tobusinesses and major examples of these are included. Other types of archives such as parish records cancontain the occasional accounts of a local tradesman, and sale catalogues, which may also contain usefulinformation on businesses, can occur in almost any context. It has not been possible to included all of theseand for these minor references it is necessary to consult the indexes and catalogues in the respective readingrooms.

NB: Papers less than 50 years old are not usually open to public inspection and inclusion in this list doesnot indicate unrestricted access. A small number of collections are also completely uncatalogued andspecial arrangements are required to consult these.
