About the AuthorI’m on the front lines and in the trenches of Corporate every day just like you.

A while back I reached the tipping point.

I was completely burned out in my career.

I found myself frustrated and cynical from the years of my own unfulfilled expectations and career dreams.

After burning myself out, I finally decided to stop thinking like an “employee” and more like someone that actually owned the place and showed up at work on his own terms.

I was able to reignite my own career.

After my own transformational experience I noticed so many others showing up to work burned out, “sleep working” through their day, and even scared about losing their job (and too scared to do anything about it).

I realized I can help them.

So now I help professionals across the workplace reignite their career while I continue to work within a fortune 100 company, keeping my finger on the pulse of challenges at Corporate.

IntroductionReigniting your career from burnout is challenging, and I’m not going to sugar coat it. But the good news is that you don’t have to quit your job to do it.

The easiest path to igniting your career from burnout is to keep your job in Corporate and:• Rejuvenate your current role• Get clear on what really inspires you• Create a path forward that integrates your role and your inspiration

This might seem foreign to you, or it might even seem impossible but there’s a way.

I’ve done it, and I’m passionate about helping others do the same. Life’s just too short to be stuck with a dead-end gig, clocking in and out of each day to collect your paycheck.

Imagine a career with less stress and worry, more confidence in the steps you’re taking, and the gratification from knowing that you’re making a difference.

Your time and self-worth are your most precious resources, and it’s time to get them off the “back-burner” and bring them into the game to create a career and life you’re passionate about.

To address this concern, I’ve created the Burnout Manifesto, 7 Ways to Reignite Your Career from Burnout (and immediately love your job). I’ve used all of these methods, and I vouch for their usefulness.

Are you ready to reignite your career?

No matter if your job is chief burger flipper or you're in the corner office, you can get burned out.

It’s even more likely when you’ve followed all the rules, taken all the tests, checked all the boxes, and kept your nose to the work grindstone just like a good employee.

Maybe you’ve sacrificed pursuing a career you love for steady pay, insurance, and retirement in the comforts of Corporate life.

Burnout happens even if you've done everything right in your career. In fact, it's one of the pitfalls of success.

The company could implode or you could get “walked out” with your office stuff in a box at any single moment. The way Corporate is nowadays, it can be scary.

But there’s good news! What seems like a burned out and stagnant job is actually your biggest career opportunity ever.

There's no time like now to start.

You can flip your current job into one you love and also chart a path forward to move into something even better.

1: Burnout is Your Biggest Opportunity...Ever

Ever noticed that recruiters always call you about jobs that are continuation of what you’re already doing?

That’s probably because it’s simpler to fit you into career path or template that’s already been laid out...by someone else.

When you’re burned out, it’s natural to start looking for the next job.

The danger is having tunnel vision that your next job should be a linear continuation of what you’ve been doing.

Maybe you’ve done that in previous jobs because you figure that’s what successful people do? It isn’t.

That’s what the sleep-working, unfulfilled, stressed-out, job-hating, Monday morning-dreading people do.

When this happens you miss out on the excitement and energy from exploring the bigger and more creative possibilities for your career.

The biggest mistake people make when they're burned out is to start working on their resume and loading it full of the very work that burned them out in the first place.

Take a look at your resume and your LinkedIn profile. Does it represent a career your excited about?

If not, it’s time to make a change.

Avoid the temptation to make a “change” right back into what you know, just because it’s what you know.

2: Avoid Career Tunnel Vision

3: Stop “Getting Things Done”You’re going to start liking your current job a lot more if, instead of getting things done at work, you focus on making things happen.

If you’ve been the person at the office that gets things done, then you take a good deal of pride in that.

However when getting things done is your m.o., it can really drain your energy and lack fulfillment.

Just consider which approach is going to give you the most energy and inspire your Monday morning:

Is it #1: Check-off your to-do list, respond to emails, repeat the party line, anticipate the obstacles, pay the bills, and complete your annual goals.

or

Is it #2: Set big goals, take risks, give more than what you take, organize a community, create a new possibility, and demand excellence.

Which one feels more inspiring for your career?

Understand “why” you work; otherwise you’ll end up working harder, not smarter.

4: Declare War on PassivityIt’s easy to succumb to the mindset of “that’s just the way things are” at the office, but that mindset is your enemy.

Problems start seeming too big to tackle and the status quo gets to be too big to challenge. This belief that things will never change is like painting you and your career in a corner.

Try replacing your frustration with the mindset of “it’s just a matter of time”. This mindset helps you silence your inner cynic and start seeing new possibilities.

To reignite your career from burnout, you’ve got to start believing it’s possible and get moving.

Having autonomy and control over your job is the one of the best ways to reignite your career. Stop waiting around for bosses and companies to get better and complaining about how you are treated.

Build the skills and go use them to create the environment in which you want to work.

Doing something now is worth 10 times more than doing it in the future. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago the second best time is now.

If you keep thinking like an employee, you’ll keep getting treated like one.

5: Re-Design your DefaultsWhat’s your routine at the office?

Ever find yourself sitting in front of the computer all day because that’s what you're accustomed to doing?

Do you check your email every 5 minutes? If you do that’s 24,000 times per year.

I used to sit at my desk for hours on end, staring at my computer, feeling a pulse of dread every time I heard my email "ding" with a new message.

This left me tired and exhausted at the end of the day.

When you're burned out it helps to take a look at what you’re doing and even asking someone else what they see.

If your not, then you’re leaving someone else in control.

Change your defaults to get up every few hours, unplug, and take a walk.

Or design your day to stop eating at your desk and at least go the break room if not outside for bit.

It makes a big difference.

If the first thing you do at the office is check your email, then you’ve already given-up control of your day.

6: Make Work PersonalHow many times have you heard “it’s not personal, it’s just business”?

Well I’ve got news for you that if you’re not making your business “personal” then it’s not sustainable and you’re going to burnout.

You spend over half your life at work, and what's the consequence of not making it personal?

Work is where you get to create and contribute to the world.

Yes, you can save doing what you really care about for your weekends and after 5 PM, but what the heck are you spending the rest of your time doing?

Funding what you really care about?

That’s no way to have a happy, thriving life.

When you’re keeping personal and work separate, you miss out on the synergies of both worlds.

Time to start finding ways to bring them together.

7: Become an EvangelistIf you really want to leave your job burnout out behind, you’ve got to become an evangelist.

Of course, I don’t mean becoming some kind of corporate bible banger…

You’ve got to start spreading ideas to help and inspire others.

It doesn’t matter if they agree or disagree.

Just helping others and serving them will in return inspire you.

Try creating a cause, then support it and explain how it helps people.

Then provide a safe and easy first step for anyone that wants to follow.

You’ll start seeing how this motivates the office.
