f Frank Lloyd Wright were alive, the artist would likely enjoy a stroll through Andrew and Elissa Wenthe’s home on Jones Street in Fayette, admiring the infl uence his work had in this couple’s design choices. From the exterior’s roofl ine and eco-friendly color, to the kitch-en cabinets and porcelain sink, and ending with the basket weave tile on the fl oors in two of the bathrooms, the Wenthes chose to replicate fea-tures from the Arts and Craft s Movement of the 1900s to 1930s. When the young couple married two years ago, Elissa was living in West Union. While she loved the charm and unique features of her brick house at the corner of Pine and Plum streets, she and An-drew realized that with plans to start a family right away, they’d need more space.

Andrew & Elissa Wenthe - Countertops

“I was only the fourth person to live there,” said Elissa. “Th e house had such amazing features, but we knew we’d outgrow it.” Andrew had earlier pur-chased property in Fayette at the edge of the city limits, very near Upper Iowa University, where the couple are employed. Th e location is perfect, they said, as they can each walk the two blocks to work. Andrew is vice president of External Aff airs, and as with Elissa, his work sometimes requires return-ing to the campus in the evenings. Th eir location is ideal for that rea-son. In their spare time, the couple can relax on their deck while lis-tening to football games in the new stadium, or take a walk on the city’s new rec trail that connects to Big

“We really wanted to strive for the Craftsman look,” she ex-plained of how they arrived at their overall design.

Weidemann, West Union, as their contractor. For many years Andrew had known Scott, his parents Rich-

ard and Bev, and brother Kurt, with whom they worked on the house de-sign. Andrew grew up in the Hawk-

eye area, where the Weidemanns also lived. Kurt is employed at E&M Lumber in Sumner, from whom

construction materials, windows and siding were purchased. “Scott’s dad, Richard, had built the addition to my parents’ farmhouse,” Andrew explained. “We really like Scott’s craft smanship. He’s also super-easy to work with and was very helpful in lining up the other contractors.” Before the house was framed, excavator Randy Petsche prepped the site. Gary Robinson poured the necessary concrete, and limestone work along the foundation was done by Milt Oberbroeckling of Strawber-ry Point. Working with Scott Wei-demann were Mark Schultz and Craig Woodson. Once the walls were prepped for paint, the Wenthes say they were relieved to have their carpenters do all the texturing and spray paint all the ceilings, making their job of the painting over one weekend and another day and a half less stressful. As for choosing paint col-ors for the various rooms, the Wen-thes were about as organized as any couple could be. Colors were chosen from swatches, and all of the paint

Th e Wenthe deck is accessed from patio doors in the living room. With am extended roof, the couple can grill year-round. When the weather’s great, the family can enjoy the sun.

for the entire house was purchased at one time. Providing square foot-age for the calculations, the Wenthes say the estimations were just about spot on. When Elissa’s parents ar-rived for the weekend from Luverne, Minn., teamwork allowed the family to accomplish a lot in a small win-dow of time. With an outstanding view of natural surroundings from just about every window, the Wenthes chose a sage hue for the kitchen. Elissa’s cherished plate collection representing travel, family and friends, is a conversation starter for guests gathering at the kitchen table. A large farmhouse sink set below double windows with a view to the north is framed by kitchen cabinetry with a look popular in the 1920s. Th e couple worked with Gossling Woodworking of Wau-coma and chose quartersawn oak for most of the cabinetry through-out their home. Open shelving in the kitchen allows Elissa to display much of the pottery she’s collected from favorite artists and a collection of cookbooks from her travels. A gas stove and double oven were other must-haves for the

Wenthes. Whether they are prepar-ing a meal for three or entertaining guests, Elissa said the kitchen is an important gathering place. A full pantry allows for easier access to baking and cooking supplies. Granite countertop from Jo-hanningmeier Stone on River Road in Decorah further complements the Craft sman style of this kitchen. Th e Wenthes selected stainless-steel appliances from John’s Appliance in Postville. A gas fi replace was installed in the living room by Garvin Hard-ware. While the couple admit this area of their home is incomplete, they have ideas for how they want their living room to look, including adding a mantel over the fi replace and purchasing additional furniture. For now, the living area is painted a clay color, with an accent wall of deep plum. Th e Wenthes chose riff sawn wood for the fl ooring in the open living room and foyer. With young children being raised in the home, it seemed most appropriate to choose the distressed-look style. All fl oor-Th e windows in the Wenthes’ spacious kitchen off ers a fabulous view as well

as plenty of light. Elissa had defi nite ideas that the couple’s kitchen would be similar to that of “Grandma’s House,” right down to the pulls on the drawers.

ing, other than the tile in the bath-rooms, was installed by Walvatne Flooring of Sumner. Both a guest bath and the master bath on the main fl oor fea-ture black and biscuit-colored bas-ket weave subway tile craft ed by Rick Westendorf. “He was amazing,” Elissa says of the craft sman’s work, admit-ting the pattern she chose eventually causes one to see a sort of optical il-lusion if one stares at it for very long. While Elissa insisted that a clawfoot bathtub be part of the mas-ter bath, Andrew preferred a walk-in shower. Th eir compromise? Both features are part of the design. Elissa gets her perfect end to a long day – a bubble bath in an ages-old iron tub. Andrew’s style is a quick shower in the neutral-colored hues of epoxy fi nish, designed by Dwane Koch of Diversity. Koch and his crew also ap-plied epoxy fi nish to the entire base-ment level, with the exception of the theater room, which is carpeted. An open stairway, which presently has a child-safety gate to

keep 15-month-old Annalise from wandering downstairs, is another feature that enhances the wide-open design. Also on the fi rst fl oor is a nursery, presently occupied by Annalise. Eventually she’ll move to her own bedroom, which is being used as a family room until a sibling comes along. Before marrying Andrew, Elissa admitted she didn’t own a television. Th e couple’s compromise for keeping TV out of the living and kitchen areas is a good-sized screen for family viewing in the theater room. Th ere, Andrew enjoys catch-ing the latest in football and basket-ball, or the couple occasionally fi nds time to watch a movie. Th e Wenthes’ heating and cooling system was installed by Gage & Gage of West Union and includes in-fl oor heat in the lowest level. Th e contractor was Walvatne Electric of Hawkeye. For a newly married couple, building a new home and beginning a family all at once might seem like a daunting task but the Wenthes ap-proached tasks, with enthusiasm.

Being in Fayette, where they both work and are able to take Annalise to daycare, has left the young cou-ple with more time for socializing with friends and family. Elissa also has a studio in the garage, allowing her to work when inspired. Walled off from the rest of the garage, the

studio’s garage-sized overhead door means that even a large sculpture, equipment and supplies can be eas-ily moved in or out. Although they still need to complete landscaping their yard and intend to put other fi nishing touches on the home, the couple and their

Pat and Jim Grimm of May-nard broke ground for their new home in June 2012, and they moved into the home in January of this year. Th e couple’s former home sat in front of where their new home now sits. Aft er the new house was completed, the old farmhouse the couple had called home since 1976 was torn down and fi lled in with dirt. “We weren’t sure if we were going build here or wait until we retire, but we decided to just build it here,” recalled Pat. “Th is way our son Chase can enjoy the house his last year of high school.” Th e Maynard residents start-ed their home design by looking at houses online, as well as in Water-

loo, until they found one they liked. “Caleb Baker (from Baker Construction) designed the layout we wanted,” recalled Pat. “It (the building process) went fast, because in the summer we had no rain so they could work, work, work,” she added. When deciding on the new home, the Grimms’ must-haves in-cluded a gas fi replace, vaulted ceil-ings, a dining room, an open base-ment, and plenty of windows. “I wanted a lot of windows,” smiled Pat, which is exactly what any visitor of the Grimms will notice, as well as the color green. “Green is my favorite color,” stated Pat. Although some of the other rooms are splashed with red,

orange, taupe, and purple, green plays a prominent role in and out-side the home. “When we were looking at houses, we saw this color and just loved it,” said Pat of the home’s green siding Open and airy, the Grimms’ new abode makes a statement with many of its distinguishing features. As you enter the home, you are met with simplicity and spa-ciousness. Th e sleek wooden fl oor and decorative detailing into one section of the wood fl ooring greets all who enter the front door. Shon Leopard of Spillville fi nished the wood fl oor with its adornment on-site, said Jim.

Separating the living room from the kitchen and casual dining area are cream-colored tiles and soft green walls. Green can also be seen in the granite countertops in the kitchen. “Th ey (Johanningmeier Stone in Decorah) have quite a few granite samples,” recalled Pat. “I didn’t see anything that hit me, so we went online at the store. I saw this one, and there was no question I wanted it.” Also unique to the kitchen is the beautiful mosaic of green, gray, and tan tiles sprawling across the wall above the countertop stove. Th e kitchen as well as the bathrooms, the basement, and the

Th e master bathroom is a spacious retreat for Jim and Pat. Th e walls are coated in salmon color. Th e distinguishing feature of this bath-room is not the Jacuzzi tub, but the large, roomy, tiled shower that takes up a third of one wall. “Th is is his (Jim’s) shower,” smiled Mrs. Grimm. “It is what he designed.” Th e master bedroom and bathroom comprise one of three bedrooms and two and half baths. Many houses today, espe-cially prefabricated ones, are assem-bled from lumber at a building site and then are moved miles away to a home site where the construction is completed. Th is was much diff erent from the home of the David and Julianne Meyer family, who live at 9113 C Avenue, near Arlington. Th eir home has turned 100 years old this year. When it was built in 1913, it became the home for Louis and Anna Martin Meisgeier and their family of three children, Rupert, 15 years; Donald, 12; and Arnaldo, 9. Arnaldo, at his tender age, assumed the task of being the fam-ily diarist. He grew up and eventu-ally moved to Salvang, Calif. On June 14, 1989, Arnaldo sent the Gary and Jeanette Lukins family, who lived in the house at that time, an account of the house as it was being constructed. Th e diary is shared today through the Lukinses’ daughter, Heather Hiemes, and the Meyers. According to Arnaldo, a summarized account of the build-

living quarters. Much of the wood in the house, mostly oak, came from two timber plots northeast of Arlington. It was sawed at the sawmill in Arling-ton. Local lumber was stacked in the barn. Gravel used for cement came from a natural gravel pit that was “crossed on the way to Wadena, one-half mile downstream from the bridge (on Highway W51).” On a good day, teams could make two round trips (of eight miles) and one round trip on the alternating day to give the horses a break. Cory Norton, who lived one-half mile north of the Meisgeier home, was placed in charge of excavating the basement. Cory owned a continu-ous cement mixer and made many of the foundation blocks. Blanchard and his crew of eight carpenters from Strawberry Point built the house. Someone went to Strawberry Point to get them or they came to Arlington mornings on the train and returned to their homes by train in the evening.

Pictured are the three Louis Meisgeier sons, Rupert, Donald and Arnaldo (on railing) on the front porch of their new home around 1914-1915.

Once the area for the foun-dation was excavated, the sills in the foundation were laid and the fi rst story sub-fl ooring was laid. Th en wall studs that had been cut were erected in proper lengths to support the attic. Th e carpenters worked long hours. Arnaldo’s mother, Annie, who had two hired girls, prepared meals for them. Th is included three daily meals for eight carpenters, two regu-lar hired men, two hired girls, and fi ve family members, or 17 in all. Ev-eryone ate in shift s. Annie also kept a good supply of cookies on hand and was certain the carpenters had plenty of water to drink. Arnaldo’s duties were to do odd jobs. In addition, Annie cared for a brood of chickens. Many trips were made to Ar-lington to the lumberyard for sup-plies. By mid-summer, the framing as well as sheeting and siding for the new house were done and the roof was completed. As soon as the structure could be completed enough to protect it somewhat from the weather, then lathers began their work. Interior door and window frames were built then doors and windows were installed. Louis Meisgeier had been

very meticulous with his house plans. As soon as he could he had a tech-nician from Fairbanks, Morse and Company of Chicago, Ill., install an electric plant in the new home. Th is was the fi rst (private) electrifi ed home in the Arlington area. (It wasn’t until 1915 that a special election was held in nearby Arlington for the erection of lights and poles.) Electric wiring was extend-ed to the horse barn, beef barn, and milking barn, to the “temporary house” and for a yard light. He also had a hot water fur-nace installed with radiators to heat the new home. A tank in the basement caught water that had overfl owed from the stock tank. In addition, the house also had a soft water system that utilized rain water. Th ree or four men from Ar-lington painted the house once it was built. Work was fi nally fi nished in 1914 when some cementing was done that included the installation of a sep-tic tank and outside sidewalks. Aft er 100 years the house has been remarkably preserved, even af-ter several families have lived in the home during that time.

RIGHT - Pictured are (front) David and Julianne Meyer, (back) son Keagan and fi ancée Stephanie, and (left ) daughter Hannah on the front porch of the original house. Th e Meyers other sons, Alex and Evan, are not pictured.

High school sweethearts Josh and Becky (Phillips) Ott have known for years that they wanted a home in the country, yet close to family.

Aft er seeing several friends experience the construction process, the Otts, too, chose Bohr Builders of Ossian to construct their home. “Th e have excellent work ethic, are professional, get the job done and are super easy to work with,” said Josh. “Th ey kept us up-to-date on the progress and let us know when we needed to give input or order items. Th ey also expressed any concerns they had and made suggestions.” Becky added, “Th ey sim-ply know what works and what doesn’t.” Entering the main level, visitors are greeted with an open

One of Becky’s favorite fea-tures in the home is a central vac system with the toe-kick dustpan hiding under the island in the kitch-en. “It’s pretty nice for sweeping the kitchen,” said Becky with a smile. “I don’t have to bend down with a dust pan all the time.” Th e main fl oor also has two bedrooms with a bathroom between for sons Isaiah and Andrew, while the master bedroom is situated to-ward the back of the home, off the kitchen, to allow the kids to sleep in with Josh and Becky’s early sched-ules. Near the door that leads to the garage is a large laundry room with a pocket door. It not only hous-es the washer and dryer, but four ad-ditional shelves that allow the laun-dry to be easily sorted, a bar to hang clothes, and a pair of additional cabinets to store any miscellaneous items the family needs. Among Josh’s favorite fea-tures of the new home are the cus-tom-built wood lockers for coats and

Josh and the boys enjoy spending time outdoors, and an outdoor wood stove from Mracek Plumbing and Heating in Decorah off ered both savings and the oppor-tunity to be outdoors cutting wood. “We have an abundance of wood in the nearby timber,” said Josh, “and it is a cheap method to heat the home.” As for the children, 15-year-

old Riley and 13-year-old Dahlyn are simply enjoying having their own bedrooms in the family’s new home. Isaiah is one of the happiest being in the country as he now has the chickens he has always wanted, but he is still trying to convince Josh and Becky to purchase some cows. “I don’t think that will ever happen,” concluded the couple.
