Remmers Make Mixing Simple With Innovative New PackagingWith the increasing demands for the safe disposal of packaging, Remmers continue to lead the way in innovative packaging solutions by reducing the impact on the environment when it comes to disposal. The task - how can we make mixing resins and hardeners “fool proof”? The solution is brilliantly simple – deliver the products in a multi-chamber bag. With this new bag mixing errors are now impossible. The components are packaged in the current mixing ratio in a single plastic bag separated by a plastic clip which when removed; the two components in the closed bag can be safely and cleanly mixed by kneading. It takes less than 60 seconds. After mixing, the contents of the bag are cleanly squeezed out through a screw-on nozzle just by rolling up the bag. You do not need any tools for mixing and contact with skin is avoided. That not only reduces packaging waste but also any health risks.

Increased Durability For Architectural Aluminium

Through its network of members across the globe, Qualicoat continue to work closely with the developers of powder systems, pre treatment systems and applicators to offer sustainable finishes for aluminium profiles. Bringing all three processes together under one Quality label ensures that each element works perfectly together. By prescribing ‘Qualicoat’ at tender stage, a specifier can be assured of a high quality and long lasting finish. Many current powder coat finishes can carry guarantees of up to 30 years with given colour and gloss retention variations. With regular cleaning and minimal maintenance, the finish will remain in place to protect the aluminium whilst offering a lasting aesthetic appearance on the building.Polyester powder coat finishes offer the best value for the building owner, whilst giving good life expectancy when specifiers choose to source their finishing from a Qualicoat approved applicator. However, buildings being

constructed today are expected to last much longer, finishes are expected to last longer with less maintenance, colours are expected to remain constant. All these issues have a direct influence on the sustainability of a building. So how does a specifier decide which coating is the most suitable for any given project? The Qualicoat organisation is based in Zurich with local organisations located in many countries across the globe In the uK, the majority of architectural powder coaters are members of ‘Qualicoat uK & Ireland’. Specifiers can contact Qualicoat’s offices in the uK, or any of its members to seek guidance on the correct specification to use for any given application. Specifiers in the uK working on projects overseas can also specify Qualicoat in the safe knowledge that they are specifying a global standard for powder coating quality. www.qualicoatuki.org

CAB Highlights Changing Face Of SpecificationCAB launches the first of its 2012 Regional Meetings and mini-conferences in Bradford on 23 February looking at ‘The Changing Face of Specification’. The acclaimed series moves away from looking at Main Contractors and their supply chains towards understanding the issues around working and communicating with Architects which includes understanding Building Information Modelling (BIM).up to 150 members and guests are expected for the event, with the meeting and conference hosted at the Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel, Bradford followed by a dinner at the nearby Salts Mill – a uNESCO world heritage site which is also home to one of the largest collections of David Hockney’s art.Recently Paul Morrell, the government’s construction adviser has said BIM will be mandatory on public buildings over £5m in capital value.BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. The key to BIM is that the project is drawn just once and forms a complex computer model. All specialist trades then have access to the BIM and can offer detailed design within the model. This method of design offers huge savings and eliminates the possibility of design problems on site. The mini-conference, which is preceded by a CAB marketing and technical update, will give members and their guests the opportunity to discuss and question upcoming routes to specification and how BIM is going to affect the building industry in the uK.Members are welcome to bring guests, should you wish to attend as a guest of CAB please contact the CAB offices. For further information about CAB, its team and membership take a look at the Association’s website at www.c-a-b.org.uk or contact Julie Harley on 01453 828851.

Dryseal Provides Intricate Solution To World Heritage Site Project

Hambleside Danelaw’s Dryseal component based GRP roofing system now features on a newly restored Victorian castle that forms the gateway to a World Heritage Site in Dorset. The grade 2 listed Durlston Castle has just received a £5.5 million facelift helped by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Dryseal was chosen for its robust quality, compatibility with differing substrates and the ease with which intricate detailing can be formed on site. Because it offers an effective lead and copper alternative, Dryseal is increasingly specified for use on heritage buildings. Hi-Tec Roof Systems said: “We are so confident in the way that the Dryseal system deals with all of the traditionally difficult roof penetration and interface problems that we use the product whenever we have a job that requires intricacy, toughness and aesthetic appeal.”www.hambleside-danelaw.co.uk

New Rooflights For The UK

New rooflights have been launched in the uK by ESSMANN, one of Europe’s leading innovators and manufacturers of daylighting systems for flat roofs. Designed to be installed in continuous runs, they are suitable for both new buildings and refurbishment to maximise daylighting and save energy, The new ESSMANN arcade rooflights i and ih feature acrylic base profiles offering different levels of insulation. Together with load absorbing blocks, these ensure thermal separation and protection against condensation as well as excellent load absorption and stability. The interior is also screened to conceal the structure and provide an attractive homogeneous appearance. The arcade rooflight glazing is made from polycarbonate web plates or a combination of different single glazing options, with skin thicknesses of up to 32mm. The highest u value is obtained when incorporating AeroTech, the world’s lightest and most insulating translucent solid. The rooflights can be manufactured to any width between 1 and 6m and of any length. They can also be equipped with ventilation or smoke and heat extraction flaps, operated by electric or pneumatic control. This system not only improves the diffusion of natural daylight but, when used with natural ventilation, creates a healthy working environment and reduces energy costs. www.essmann.co.uk

Trio Of Sandtoft Tiles Used By Riverside

Riverside, one of the leading social housing and regeneration organisations in England, has re-roofed 404 properties on the Botcherby Estate in Carlisle using Sandtoft’s Olympus, Rivius and Modula clay roof tiles. The new roofs form part of a refurbishment which has seen the external envelope of each house transformed with new fascias, gutters, rendered panels and canopies.Built around 75 years’ ago, the houses are located on an estate which has changed dramatically over the last few years as a result of a multi million pound neighbourhood revitalisation investment by Riverside. The properties featuring Sandtoft’s products are spread over three different streets in Botcherby and originally featured Gaelic clay tiles. As well as supplying roof tiles, Sandtoft worked closely with the contractors and Riverside to develop a roofing specification that required no mortar. This included the use of dry valleys and bonding gutters as well as Koratech, a vapour permeable membrane which unlike traditional Bitumen underlay, helps to prevent condensation in the roof space.John Robinson, Asset Investment Manager from Riverside said: “We were considering reusing the Gaelic tiles until we were shown the Olympus clay double pantile and realised the cost savings that could be achieved. The dry fixing system was also a major benefit as it could be fitted in any weather ensuring that the construction programme wasn’t delayed.“We used the Olympus clay double pantile on one of the streets and the Modula and the Rivius on a further two roads. Overall, the appearance of the properties in all three areas is very pleasing and the estate looks considerably better and more modern. We have received numerous compliments about the estate which has changed from a place where houses were difficult to let, to one which has a waiting list of potential tenants. The Olympus, Rivius and Modula tiles are part of Sandtoft’s New Generation range. Each tile in the range has been designed to make a natural clay roof more affordable as a result of an innovative design that significantly reduces installation costs. Approximately 10 tiles are required per square metre, resulting in a covering capacity that matches the largest concrete tiles. In addition, an open gauge means there is no need for cutting at the eaves and ridge making the tiles quick and easy to lay.Andrew Lawton, Sandtoft’s sales director added: “The Botcherby project was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the variety and adaptability of our New Generation range and dry system capability. Working in close partnership with Riverside we were able to dramatically reduce their costs and create a long-term solution with a lasting impression.” www.sandtoft.com

SAFETYWORKS & Solutions Demonstrate Why They Are At The Top Of The Class!SAFETYWORKS & Solutions Ltd., has recently provided an upgraded roof safety and access system at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital School, in Bristol. As the School building is Grade 1 listed, it was essential that the specified products met the safety requirements and were also in accordance to English Heritage guidelines. The solution was for SAFETYWORKS to specify a range of products that would ensure safe movement around the roof enabling maintenance crews and external contractors secure access. SAFETYWORKS installed ten uniline 8mm Stainless Steel Systems to the tiled roofs, totalling 280m. uniline allows “hands free” protection throughout the length of the system, where the operator is attached via a link device that glides over the brackets without the need to detach from the fall protection system. Bespoke Fakro Roof Windows For Co-Operative Pioneers Museum

For those involved in the conversion of buildings with either Listed status or in a conservation area, the low profile achievable using FAKRO Conservation roof windows provides the traditional appearance invariably demanded by Planning Authorities. Fakro regularly manufactures products to bespoke requirements and most of its extensive range is available in conservation style. When specifying for the restoration of the Co-Operative Pioneers’ Museum in Rochdale, Loop Systems selected FAKRO windows to replace 8 old rooflights set within a traditional stone slate roof with diminishing courses. The mid-Victorian building is in a conservation area and Fakro’s EZJ flashing provided the necessary profile flush within the roof line despite problems with slates of varying thickness. The specification also required windows to have a double mullion bar in RAL7022. A similar situation existed with the redevelopment of Berkswell Home Farm’s Victorian Grade II* Listed stable block. Windows had to be set in a clay plain tiled roof, again flush within the roofline. Marron uK’s John Brown commented, “Fakro windows were better finished and engineered than the manufacturer we had previously recommended and use of EZJ flashing to enable the windows to sit low within the roofline was critical for aesthetic purposes”.All FAKRO roof windows are made using close-grain redwood pine and have sleek frames which have their operating handle in the base of the sash. They offer a minimum standard of security and safety to EN13049 Class III through use of the topSafe® system and a minimum u-value of 1.4W/m2K. In addition to double and triple-glazed options, a quadruple-glazed window is also available with a u-value as low as 0.58W/m2K together with a wide choice of glazing options. www.fakro.co.uk

Environments don’t come much busier than a brand-new, state-of-the-art secondary school in West London – which is why Hammersmith Academy features two 13-person Stannah Xtralift passenger lifts to help bring access between four floors for school personnel and mobility compromised users, including students.

With circa 780 students, staff and visitors to cater for on a daily basis, democratic movement between all facilities is vital for this non-denominational, all-ability, co-educational school and 6th form specialising in Creative and Digital Media and IT. Operating over a distance of 13.2m each, the lifts feature plasticised, light-grey walls, ‘Domino’ suspended, downlighter-effect ceilings, and stainless-steel consoles, skirtings and car doors. Door-size graphics – G-1-2-3 – printed on the external lift doors make the lifts easily located at each floor; and swipe-card access ensures that they can only be accessed by card-carrying users.

The Xtralifts were specified by Nathan Beevers, Associate of BHM Associates, a London architect practice with a pedigree in designing Academies: “As with all such projects, Hammersmith Academy demonstrates our response to the physical and emotional demands of the environment. In both product and performance, Stannah has supported this ethos and made a significant contribution to the efficiency and good health of the school. Having used Stannah on numerous projects we knew they would perform well from initial consultation to installation, commissioning and after-care.”

Stannah’s Xtralift range is designed for busy surroundings to carry more people a little faster and a little higher. A super-efficient, oil- and vibration-free, gearless traction drive ensures a smooth ride with low noise, energy use and running costs. Compact controls located at the top of the shaft save space; and fast, efficient installation is ensured by a modular structure and unique rail system giving precision, durability and reliability.

Available in models up to 33 persons, with many features, finishes and options, Xtralifts comply with EN 81-1, CE marked and in full compliance with The Lift Directive 95/16/EC; and ensure that Hammersmith Academy’s owners meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010.

The Xtralifts are serviced by the London and South East branch of Stannah Lifts Services, a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support. This covers service, repair, modernisation and refurbishment of all types of lifts, stairlifts, escalators and moving walkways – not only those from the Stannah product range, but also other lift manufacturers’ equipment. GALLERY/PROJECT/YORKONTitle: Challenging Roof-Top Extension To Cardiac Catheterisation Unit Delivered On Time And On Budget At Lister HospitalLocation: Lister Hospital, StevenageApplication: 24-module extensionVisit: www.yorkon.info

Award-winning off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has delivered a challenging project to double capacity of the cardiac catheterisation unit at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, on time and on budget – its second project at the hospital for East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

This involved adding a new storey on to the roof of the existing unit that was provided by Yorkon in 2004, which has doubled the size of these life-saving heart facilities, and represents a significant £4.5m investment in service delivery for the Trust.

The project was phased to maintain use of the existing facility throughout and to keep any disruption to service provision during the construction works to an absolute minimum.

The 24-module extension was installed using a 350-tonne crane and the operation was carried out over a weekend to further reduce any inconvenience to staff and patients. The project also included changes to patient flows and extensive reconfiguration works to the existing laboratory suite, as well as the provision of stairs, lift, and an adjacent modular corridor.

The building has provided a range of purpose-designed facilities including a second catheterisation laboratory, clinical support areas, control room, preparation and recovery rooms, consulting and examination suites, offices, reception and waiting area.

Commenting on the project, Manu Shah, Lead Capital Project Manager for the scheme at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, said, “This was a complex project and Yorkon performed very well throughout. The installation phase went smoothly and the building was completed to the high standards expected by the Trust. The expanded facility has been welcomed by both clinicians and patients who are benefiting from a building that has been specifically designed for this service.”

“Speed of construction was a key issue for the Trust in order to have the new facility up and running as quickly as possible. The Yorkon off-site approach is much faster than traditional site-based building methods. It also requires much less space for construction, which was critical on this site as the cardiac unit is almost fully enclosed by other buildings so there was little room for the storage of materials, plant and equipment.” “The second cardiac laboratory suite is now enabling us to provide life-saving cardiac services locally to more people.”

By expanding both the unit’s capacity and the range of cardiac services available at Lister Hospital, far fewer people need to travel to other hospitals for specialist cardiology treatment. It has also increased efficiency, with better care being provided for patients needing help in an emergency, as well as those with planned treatments.

The roof-top extension was installed with partitions, mechanical and electrical services, windows and doors already in place to reduce time on site by around 50 per cent. It is targeted to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ environmental rating. Yorkon is part of the Portakabin Group.

The Teesport Container Terminals are a purpose built, multi million pound facilities owned and operated by PD Ports. The terminals are located on the South bank of the river Tees and part of the Northern Gateway Container Terminal development. Completed in Autumn 2011, Teesport Container Terminal 2 – expansion phase 1, increases capacity to 450,000 TEu (Twenty Foot Equivalent unit), from its current 235,000 TEu - an investment of more than £15million.

The port’s overall strategy is to expand port wide capacity, including Ro-Ro traffic, to at least 650,000 TEu, which will position Teesport as a major player in the container market.

County Durham based Hall Construction Services Ltd successfully won the design & build tender to carry out the civil engineering works at the Container Terminal. The works involved the complete reconstruction of the terminal with a new heavy duty concrete standing area designed to resist the massive loads imposed by the container stacks. New cranes and heavy handling equipment was also purchased as part of the project.

As the Terminal’s concreted area is over six hectares, effective surface water drainage was a major consideration to ensure efficient all-weather operation.

Designed to resist the rigours of site work, two sizes of Hauraton channel were installed. 44 metres of RECYFIX® HICAP® 200 and 840 metres of HICAP® 680 installed in two runs. Hall Construction Project Manager commented, “Each one metre unit was easily manipulated into position on site and no channel breakages were reported during the installation process”. To further reduce installation times, end-of-run caps and pipe connection sockets were also supplied with other connection points moulded into the sides and bottom of each channel. This was a major advantage for the contractor as it helped speed the completion of the project.

Factory fitted with 14mm slotted ductile iron inlets, the channels comply with a loading class of F900 so can easily take the weight of a lifting truck with a fully laden container. Importantly, once installed the complete system is highly resilient to the twisting forces imposed by the wheeled vehicles employed.

The RECYFIX® HICAP® 200 one metre channels used each have a water capacity of 79.0 litres whilst the HICAP® 680 units have a massive 443 litre capacity. The whole channel system installed at Teesport Container Terminal 2 is able to accept a volume of water of 375,596 litres.

A RECYFIX® HICAP® Gully and Access point, also made from 100% recycled PE-PP, were installed at each end of the HICAP® 200 run which were laid in a curve along the service road. Large concrete rings were used as gullies and access points for the HICAP® 680 units.

Colin Taff, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer comments about the project, “We are pleased that this phase of the Teesport project has been such a success and we are delighted to have contributed to its rapid build progress”.Case Study available on www.hauraton.co.uk

GALLERY/PROJECT/WICONA

The stunning new headquarters building for KfW Bank in Frankfurt, which features extensive use of Wicona unitised curtain walling, has won a major global architectural award.

The prestigious accolade for the World’s Best Tall Building has been awarded to the KfW project by the Council for Tall Buildings and urban Habitat (CTBuH) – the leading international authority on the design, construction and development of tall buildings.

This is the second time the CTBuH has recognised a Wicona project. In 2009 the Tornado Tower in Doha, another application of Wicona unitised curtain walling, was presented with the award for the Best Tall Building in the Middle East.

The CTBuH awards highlight projects from across the world that have made ‘extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest level’.

Described as a ‘remarkable building’, the $85m KfW scheme was designed by architects Sauerbruch Hutton to combine form, colour and sustainability. With a primary energy consumption of just 98kWh/m2, it is also one of the world’s most sustainable office buildings.

The building, known as Westarkade, provides office space for 700 staff and a conference centre. Its base is a curved four-storey podium connected to the bank’s adjacent buildings on several levels. A 10-storey tower rises above the podium in a ‘flowing’ form that responds to the prevailing wind direction and orientation of the sun, maximising natural day light and achieving the best possible views for the occupants of the neighbouring KfW buildings.

The scheme’s most distinctive feature is its bespoke double skin façade constructed using Wicona’s aluminium unitised curtain walling.

The envelope consists of an encircling ‘sawtooth-shaped cavity’ which encloses automated blinds to reduce solar gain and control glare. The exterior is defined by a skin of fixed tempered glass panels and colourful ventilation ‘flaps’ in red, blue and green, helping to create a striking aesthetic. The internal façade has alternating opening and fixed glazed units.

This dynamic façade solution negates the effect of variable pressures around the building, allowing natural ventilation all year round and for the occupiers to open the windows on the inner skin whilst avoiding both draughts and heat loss.

A roof-mounted weather station linked to the building management system monitors wind speed and direction, and controls the façade’s outer ventilation flaps. This solution introduces fresh air when required and creates a zone of constant pressure surrounding the inner skin of curtain walling. Air can then be drawn into the offices via floor vents or the occupier-controlled windows.

Commenting on the award, Peter Murray, one of the CTBuH judges, said, “The streamlined form of the building integrates itself into its surrounding context, whilst simultaneously standing out through the playful use of colour. Whereas many buildings use colour as a way to mask an otherwise unremarkable building, here it contributes an additional rich layer to what is already a remarkable building.”

KfW is one of the largest banks in Germany and is at the forefront of the country’s demanding energy policies. It was therefore a key project requirement to develop a highly sustainable office building for its headquarters expansion.

Wicona offers one of the most widely used and technically advanced unitised façades in Europe, which is particularly suited to high rise, complex and bespoke façade designs. The panels can accommodate any combination of profiles, external feature caps and glazing, and can carry stone cladding; metal, composite or polycarbonate panels; windows, doors and fixed light glazing; brise soleil sunshading and photovoltaic panels.

Title: Sarah Beeny Commissions Further ‘Granite Transformations’Location: Rise Hall, YorkshireApplication: Reconstituted Granite And Recycled GlassVisit: www.granitetransformations.co.uk

GALLERY/PROJECT/GRANITE TRANSFORMATIONS

TV property guru Sarah Beeny invited Granite Transformations back to Rise Hall to help transform yet more bathrooms, for the second series of her popular Restoration Nightmare peak-time series. This time, the kitchen & bathroom surfaces specialist supplied and fitted materials for four more interiors, bringing the total number of Rise Hall installations to eight. The massive restoration project is still ongoing and Sarah is so impressed with the looks and performance of the reconstituted granite and recycled glass finishes that she is already talking about using Granite Transformations for fitting out a further four bathrooms.

The second series of the top rating Channel 4 makeover show ran through October and November 2011 and featured Sarah and her husband Graham Swift continuing their battle to breathe new life into their listed 97-room mansion in Yorkshire. It focused on the couple’s endeavours to restore several bedrooms and all the main state rooms, together with washing spaces and bathrooms, with Sarah emphasising the need for fittings ‘to last another hundred years’, as much as bringing renewed decorative style to jaded 19th century interiors.

One particular Rise Hall makeover project, in which Granite Transformations was closely involved, has already introduced a striking ‘wow factor’ for visitors: the emerald green bathroom serving the Tepilo Suite features its Dream Green recycled glass and the backlit bath panel presents a truly eyecatching, bejewelled appearance that is visible the length of the adjoining corridor. In contrast, the Millenium bridal suite, with its refined Palm Desert quartz panelling on the boxed-in bath, whimsical ‘thunderbox’ and twin wash stations, is notable for its subtle colourways and restrained elegance.

Granite Transformations’ Chief Operating Officer, Danny Hanlon, visited Rise Hall once again recently, on the same day as an Hello magazine photoshoot, and renewed his firm’s ongoing commitment to Sarah and Graham’s extensive makeover programme.

“It’s an enormous and quite daunting project, but you can already see the massive transformation that’s taken place,” says Danny. “We’re delighted to be involved

in a modest way, as it provides opportunities for employing our agglomerate materials in settings other than simply kitchens. Drawing upon Graham’s artistic talent and Sarah’s undoubted design know-how, they have managed to style and theme each room individually, enabling us to showcase a number of quite different colours and finishes, including some rarities from our back catalogue.”

Other Granite Transformations highlights at Rise Hall include a dramatic Black Star shower room in the Stable Wing, from series one, as well as copper, brown and black Mocha Real wall cladding and flooring in the Farndale bathroom and Nero Stella black granite bath cut-out and extensive splashbacks in the Holderness Suite, both of which were featured in series two.

The installations were all carried out by skilled fitters from Granite Transformations’ head office in Tunbridge Wells, Kent and, in common with all of the brand’s domestic customers, Sarah and Graham will enjoy a lifetime material warranty. The same fitters have also worked on other networked TV shows like ITV’s 60 Minute Makeover and BBC’s DIY SOS, so are familiar with the demands of filming schedules; while the material lends itself perfectly to ‘instant makeover’ projects, being tough, slimline, lightweight and able to fit neatly over most existing surfaces, with beautiful and lasting results.

Most of the luxurious finishes featured at Rise Hall are available through Granite Transformations showrooms around the country and, just like on TV makeover shows, its highly qualified installers will measure up and fit new worktop counters, bathroom cladding, shower linings and other refinishing surfaces, mostly in a single day.

As the current series of Beeny’s Restoration Nightmare came to a close, doubts were raised as to whether the whole project might be halted due to local licence issues. But Sarah tells Danny that they have now received the necessary venue licence for staging weddings and the bookings are coming in thick and fast, so the story continues…

ISSUE 1 2012 037

Government Procurement Service, an executive agency of the Cabinet Office, has awarded a four-year framework agreement to Portakabin for the supply of modular buildings to the public sector.

The framework agreement simplifies the procurement process for publicly-funded organisations, significantly reducing both cost and time. As part of the new framework, customers selecting Portakabin will benefit from rapid procurement and cost-effective modular building solutions, avoiding costly, compulsory competitive tendering.

Government Procurement Service is the largest professional buying organisation in the public sector and the only body with a legal remit to trade across the whole of the public sector. In the past year, it managed £7.6bn of customer spend through its procurement arrangements and services, working with 14,500 customers across 1,400 organisations in central Government, health, education, local government and other areas.

This latest framework follows a rigorous, independent assessment of the buildings and services offered by Portakabin, including its assurance of supply, quality management procedures, regulatory compliance, innovation and cost.

The new framework agreement with Portakabin includes the supply of modular buildings for both sales and hire, and for applications such as offices, kitchens and restaurants, education facilities for nursery, primary, secondary and further education, and in the healthcare sector, buildings for consultation, patient accommodation and operating theatres.

Commenting on the new agreement, Robert Snook, Director and General Manager of Portakabin Hire said, “This is one of the most significant framework arrangements in our sector and we are absolutely delighted to have been successful. It follows our work under the previous framework for the past four years and a very rigorous competitive tendering and selection process over recent months.”

“We already supply modular buildings across the public sector, from hospitals to schools, Ministry of Defence sites and local authorities. This new pan-Government initiative will radically reduce procurement time for our public sector customers and deliver significant cost savings.”

As a result of the new agreement, public sector organisations and Government departments will have access to the technical expertise offered by Portakabin and a wide range of modular building solutions as well as its network of more than 50 hire centres across the uK.

Government Procurement Service framework suppliers are available to any organisation that is more than 50 per cent publicly funded, as well as private sector specifiers working for the public sector – such as architects, engineers and facilities management companies.

Innovation-to-order at Howe GreenDirector Richard Centa Explains Why New Product Development Is All In A Days Work

Howe Green is the industry’s access specialist. Best known for design and manufacture of top quality access covers for floors, walls and ceilings, Howe Green products have been first choice for some of the biggest and most prestigious building projects around the world.

Substantial investment in state-of-the art equipment and highly skilled staff has enabled the company to offer customers non-standard sizes and specifications alongside their core ranges. This is typically with no premium to pay or prohibitive time implications; something that has undoubtedly given the Hertfordshire based firm a competitive edge in today’s tough market. Howe Green has raised the bar in recent years though as architects, specifiers and contractors are increasingly challenging them to develop bespoke products and tailored specifications for projects under ever tighter budget and time pressures.

“Every access panel we make is to the client’s exact specification and that has always been our policy” explains Richard Centa, Howe Green’s Sales and Marketing Director “But I think now more than ever we are being asked to modify specifications or develop completely bespoke products to solve problems. New product development is something the whole company is involved with. It’s a continual process led by the customer which is how it should be.”

Demand for the firms bespoke products and specialist services is diverse and spans all areas of Howe Green’s business which includes linear drainage and entrance matting as well as comprehensive access solutions. Special stainless

steel tree pit covers for London’s most expensive apartment block, custom-made linear drainage systems for Blackfriars Station, 5m access cover runs for the Roman Baths attraction and bespoke covers with high voltage cable pits for London underground are all among recent special projects. “Our industry experience and manufacturing capabilities mean we can act quickly and without having to hike prices,” Richard concludes “We provide solutions proven to save time and money – often on site when the job is in its most crucial stages”.

It is true that innovation is at the heart of every successful company and it comes from knowledge, understanding and quick response to demand. For Howe Green, it seems this is all in a days work. www.howegreen.com

Ardex Flooring System Is A Perfect Match For New Institute Of Transplantation

ARDEX uK were pleased to work in partnership with flooring contractor Look North Flooring of South Shields, to provide underlayment’s for

the new £30million Institute of Transplantation, at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle. The project involved 7100m2 of flooring, which initially received an application of ARDEX DPM 1 C One Coat Surface Damp Proof Membrane. Developed for use as a single coat application, ARDEX DPM 1 C protects the

floorcovering installation from residual construction moisture and ground water vapour. ARDEX DPM 1 C is easy to apply and fast curing, enabling the smoothing compound to be laid after as little as 6 hours. The cured DPM then received ARDITEX RS PLuS, a latex levelling and smoothing compound which provided a smooth and flat surface, perfect for the final vinyl floorcovering. www.ardex.co.uk

Frontrunner Brush Wide from Plastic Extruders Ltd is designed for use as heavy duty external entrance matting. Part of the Frontrunner Entrance Flooring System range, the mat has an extra wide grid and nylon insterts that make it particularly suitable as a temporary or permanent barrier against heavy soiling in bad weather and winter. Frontrunner Brush Wide was developed for those European countries where winter gritting salt has been replaced by granite chippings to provide a hard wearing slip resistant surface on snow and icy paths. The extra wide gaps between the brushes allow small stones to fall through the grid and not remain on the surface where they could be carried. In addition, their unique flexibility means that they will contour over uneven or rough surfaces and always remain stable underfoot. www.frontrunnerplus.com

New Trend Teak Agglomerate Flooring Planks

Reflecting today’s fashion for wood-effect flooring, Italian tile maker Trend has introduced new agglomerate flooring planks for beautiful, eco-

sustainable finishes. Rather than mimic the appearance of wood or use face printing technology, Trend has chosen timber-like quartz, granite and recycled glass finishes for its new Trend Teak range, leaving the 120cm x 14.7cm (approx 47” x 5¾”) planks to replicate the appeal of solid wood flooring when laid. Measuring only 6.6mm (¼”) thick, Trend Teak planks are lightweight, flexible and easy to

handle, yet technically superior to most timber, laminate, vinyl and ceramic materials, which makes them ideal for demanding flooring applications, such as seamless transitions between the home and outside terrace.

Adding further to the appeal of its new flooring finish, Trend is teaming Teak planks with its innovative Clip2Go installation system, creating one of the quickest, easiest and most hardwearing solutions for new or replacement floors. Pre-mounted in customised Clip2Go interlocking base panels, Trend Teak agglomerate boards will simply click together and ‘float’ above the existing sub-floor, with no adhesives or grouting required. Apart from quick, clean and easy installation, with most floors laid in just one day, this system can be subsequently dismantled and the planks removed and reused, all without damaging the underlying floor.

The Trend Teak range comes in six standard finishes, from black and ‘dark teak’ to ‘softwood’ cream tones and off-whites, with other colours available to order. Made from natural stone, tempered glass chips and a small percentage of high grade polyester resin, the agglomerate material is extremely tough,

durable, non-absorbent and resistant to impacts, scratching, stains, thermal shock and harsh chemicals. Trend uses up to 78% recycled glass and recovered stone in the production process, making Teak planks a sustainable alternative to non-renewable hardwoods, and the material has achieved Greenguard certification for very low VOC levels, underlining its suitability for schools and domestic housing.

Being slim and lightweight, with a considerable degree of flexibility, Trend Teak planks can be readily laid over existing flooring, either bonded direct to the substrate or pre-mounted in Clip2Go interlocking panels. With the risk of slipping an obvious risk on floor coverings, Teak offers an essential DIN 51130 R9 slip resistance rating. Apart from domestic flooring, conservatories and swimming pool surrounds, this makes it perfect for entrance halls, stairs and corridors in offices, schools and hotels, wards, clinics and laboratories in the healthcare sector, catering establishments, retail outlets and financial institutions.

Moreover, with increasing demand for temporary and ‘floating’ floor surfaces that won’t damage existing surfaces, the Trend Teak/Clip2Go combination is an obvious candidate. Typical applications include hotel-based trade fairs and exhibitions, catering marquees, in-store concessions and preserving historic flooring during renovation work, with the bonus that Trend Teak is ready for immediate use, without special cleaning or preparation.www.trend-gb.com

Leaning Brick Panels Secured On Large Commercial Building

Although only some 25 years old, due to the use of incorrect wall ties when the premises were constructed, the Johnson & Johnson Vision Centre in Sunbury on Thames required replacement wall ties. Outer leaf brick panels on this large commercial building were leaning outwards and raising safety concerns, with the possibility of masonry collapse, but have now been secured using RetroTie remedial wall ties from Helifix Ltd.Containing offices, laboratories and a warehouse, the Vision Centre is 8m high and constructed with a steel frame, inner leaf aircrete blocks and outer leaf panels of engineering bricks. Weak galvanised wire ‘butterfly’ ties and been installed originally, which were not strong enough to support the outer wall and the problem of leaning brickwork was becoming progressively worse. To stabilise the brick panels and ensure they were fully secured to the inner blocks, Bradbrook Consulting Ltd specified RetroTie stainless steel replacement ties to provide a rapid, reliable and economical solution. Over 5,000 RetroTies were installed on two main elevations, in a diamond grid pattern, by Helifix Approved Installer, ASRS Ltd, working from scissor lifts and avoiding the need for scaffolding. The 245mm long ties were inserted through clearance holes drilled in the outer leaf and driven into inner leaf pilot holes before being resin bonded into the brick panels for a secure connection. www.helifix.co.uk

RMIG Gives The Big Picture To New Music Building At Danish School

A new music studies building at Skansevejens School in Denmark incorporates a unique façade, which uses precision perforated steel from RMIG to depict large photographic quality images of children singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. Designed by leading Danish architects and consultants Kærsgaard & Andersen, the interior of the new 200m2 music facility incorporates well-equipped rehearsal rooms, classrooms and dance areas to provide a dedicated teaching space with a clear focus on music.RMIG worked closely with the architects to create the complex pattern of perforations needed to render the images accurately on the cladding, which was manufactured using a series of 2.0mm thick hot dip galvanised mild steel panels. The original images were scanned and processed using special software at RMIG to create a unique perforation programme that generated the detailed punch sequence. RMIG produced all of the images on the 6.0 metre high by 10 metre wide façade by using circular perforations ranging in diameter from 8.0mm to 20.0mm. New PIR Door From Stertil Stokvis Ensures Greater Fire Resistance

Stertil Stokvis has expanded its successful product range by introducing a new door featuring a very special foam core. The PIR foam, from construction industry specialist Kingspan, represents a step change in modern door manufacture. The new door is constructed from steel sandwich panels with a polyisocyanurate (PIR) core. The polymer structure of PIR is superior to the industry standard polyurethane (PuR), in that it is difficult to ignite and self-extinguishing, thereby providing enhanced fire resistance. PIR already has an excellent track record in real fire situations in many different types of buildings including schools, hospitals, warehouses and factories. As well as the improved fire resistance, PIR panels also offer enhanced long-term characteristics, such as low heat conductivity, excellent mechanical parameters and low water absorption.http://www.stertiluk.com/stertilstokvis

Gilgen Curved Sliding Door Solves Architectural Challenge At Tate St Ives

Gilgen Door Systems has supplied and installed an elegant curved sliding door at Tate St Ives, as part of the refurbishment of the main entrance.

Working with London based Evans and Shalev Architects and the gallery, Gilgen supplied a curved sliding door together with an internal single sliding door. The specification required a practical door solution which not only allowed exceptional pedestrian throughput, but would also blend seamlessly with the existing elegant, curved facade and upper level architectural glass features of the building. Additionally, the outer doors were required to withstand hurricane force Atlantic winds and the affects of salt water. Gilgen recommended an external curved sliding door and an internal single sliding door to replace the existing swing doors to fully meet the criteria.

The bespoke curved sliding door was manufactured to fit the existing building façade and installed to enclose the existing porch area of the entrance. The striking, 3m x 3m all glass, convex curved sliding door has a radius of 6.3m giving a clear walk through area of 3.2m enabling visitors to pass through with ease, even at extremely busy times. Gilgen also recommended laminated glass and a marine paint finish to withstand the affects of the weather and salt water and installed a special Y designed tracking system to enable the stone paving to be laid right up to the doors. The existing swing doors have been replaced with a single sliding door. This door also maximizes the clear walk through area of the doorway and provides a comfortable inner entrance for visitors. Both installations fully meet BS7036 regulations and requirements under the Disability Discriminations Act.

The Gilgen SRM curved sliding door is available in either convex or concave configuration with radii to meet any specification. They can be supplied

in full or half circle configurations and the self supporting steel structure guarantees seamless integration into existing architecture. Safety features include auto-reverse and safety stopping mechanisms and fail safe functions open the door in the event of an emergency making it suitable for emergency exit routes. The SLX sliding door system is technologically advanced, ensuring safety, reliability and practicality. Both systems exceed current industry legislation, meet BS7036 and requirements set out in the Disability Discrimination Act.

Gilgen Door Systems has over 80 years international experience in the design, manufacture and installation of a leading range of commercial and industrial door systems. With regional centres across the uK, Gilgen also offers a nationwide maintenance and repair service and is a member of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA). www.gilgendoorsystems.co.uk

Patio Life – Take A Panoramic View

Building designers wishing to make the most of impressive scenery or landscape views can now take advantage of Roto’s Patio Life sliding door system. This unique hardware suite enables very large glass sizes, filling rooms with natural light whilst at the same time making remarkably easy work of sliding large, heavy door sashes. Patio Life is the next step on from a ‘lift and slide’ system. The Roto product negates the need for the ‘lift’ element with its mechanism that moves the gaskets in order to make the seal. The result is sliding doors whose ease of use belies their weight – up to 400 kg. Sashes containing glazed units over 3 metres wide are possible. The threshold offers excellent thermal insulation, resulting in u-values low enough for the system to have been specified in Passive House projects. Roto has also introduced a new low-profile threshold to comply with Part M of the Building Regulations.Another unique advantage is ventilation with full security: the vent mode allows airflow when the sash is fully closed and locked. Various design schemes are possible and the hardware is suitable for door sets made from timber or other composite materials. Sudscape Boosts Eco Credentials Of Olympic Village

A unique SuDS-compliant paving system comprised of recycled car tyres is being used to boost the eco-credentials of landscaping provided at the Olympic Village. The SuDSCAPE system is being used on 460 sq metres of pathways within the residential courtyards of the Athletes’ villageLandscape Architects Macfarlane Wilder, who are the appointed Landscape Architects for blocks N10 and N14, chose Sudscape for a number of reasons. The SuDSCAPE System does not require a concrete or tarmac base, a key consideration for roof top landscaping where access for installation equipment is difficult. use of the system also eliminates the risk of standing water or flooding - SuDSCAPE has its own built-in rubber sub-base using recycled car tyres, with a top layer comprised of resin and aggregate. As both layers are porous and flexible, water is held within the voids within the sub-base until it is naturally absorbed back into the water table. SuDSCAPE offers a host of other benefits making it ideal for the Olympic project, including a relatively quick installation process, easy maintenance, with no weeding required, and also cost effectiveness, with the system boasting a similar price structure to block paving. www.sudscape.co.uk

Sika Ensures Smooth Running Of Luton Dunstable Busway

Sika concrete admixtures are being used in the production of high quality precast concrete beams and slabs on the £89 million Luton Dunstable Busway. The main section of the route is a 7.4km guided segregated section where the buses will run and be guided on a concrete track. The L shaped concrete beams on which the buses will run are 6 metres long and 480mm high and weigh 4.8 tonne and are accurate to within 2mm. The concrete needs to achieve high early strength, enabling the precast moulds to be speedily and efficiently turned around - essential for the contractor to maintain the tight production schedule. In order to meet these requirements, Sika® Viscocrete® 25MP concrete admixture is an important ingredient in the production of the precast base slabs and beams that make up the track. It ensures that the concrete moves freely through the precast moulds, fully encapsulating the steel reinforcement. Littering Seagulls foiled by Leafield Environmental

Seagulls scavenging for food from litter bins is a problem witnessed in many coastal communities. unsightly litter is strewn about pavements causing extra work for council employees. If the problem is not addressed, it helps creates an artificially high population and

encourages further breeding pairs to take up residence in the area, raising public health or public safety concerns. Leafield Environmental, in close cooperation with South Hams District Council, has addressed the issue by adding a new design “seagull flap” to its popular Pioneer litter bin. A flap based on the PVC strip curtain door principle and added to the 130 litre hooded bin, allows users to deposit even large waste items such as pizza boxes using just one hand. Manufactured from corrosion

resistant plastic and double skinned throughout for exceptional all-round strength, the Pioneer has a slam shut, front opening door with four-point latch for extra security and double apertures for easy access. until seagulls learn to pick locks, the Pioneer litter bin with seagull flaps will help keep seaside towns litter-free.www.leafield-environmental.com

Article By: CembritTitle: The Great Slate DebateAuthor: Ged Ferris, Marketing Manager

Roofing material matters and the specification issues can be confusing, so Ged Ferris, Marketing Manager at slates and cladding specialist, Cembrit, is on hand to offer guidance.

As many architects are aware, roofing slate is available in both natural and man-made varieties. In order to make the most suitable choice for a particular project, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the unique qualities of both, as well as the kinds of application for which each is best suited.

The natural choice?Natural slate is a traditional building material, with a heritage that goes back to Roman times. It offers a fantastic combination of aesthetic appeal and exceptional durability. Natural slate can become a major contributory factor in a building’s whole life costs, which is important since environmental issues are moving to the forefront in all areas of construction. A well laid slate roof will enhance any building and give problem free protection for the lifetime of the building. However, natural slate also satisfies on that other buzzword so common throughout product specification – sustainability! As well as lasting the lifetime of the building, natural slate can be salvaged and re-used. In fact, reclaiming natural slate for roofing and cladding has been common practice since the middle of the last century, with worked

stone recognised as a valuable building material for many hundreds of years, as it is today. Natural slate, tested to BS EN 12326 Part I and meeting the highest relevant ratings will be unaffected by normal extremes of temperature, and highly resistant to acids, alkalis and other chemicals. This means that it is resistant to acid rain and atmospheres that contain sulphur dioxide, whereas man-made products commonly discolour due to weathering or the growth of lichens (although surface coatings can delay this process).

Natural slate often respects the traditional or local character where it is used and, as a natural product, features variations in colours, sizes and textures. This is especially important in conservation areas, where slate selection must match existing roofing materials on surrounding buildings. Historically, slates were from a local source which means that usually there is a ‘type’ of roofing material particular to a location. However, nowadays with more quarries available worldwide, suitable alternatives can be found to match most British origin slates found on roofs throughout the country.

Fibre cement slateThe advances in the production of fibre cement slate now mean that a wider range of projects can benefit from a slate roof. Fibre cement slates come in a uniform size, thickness, and shape eliminating the time needed to sort

Page 57: Building Innovations - January-February 2012 Issue 1

OPINION

on site, as well as offering added versatility when architects want to use complex roof designs on buildings.

Fibre cement slates are pre-drilled for quick and easy fixing saving time on site, and therefore also lowering costs. In addition, the slates can be cut and mitred using simple hand tools. This adds to the ease of installation and can also reduce waste on site through breakage. This consistency means it is easier for these products to be used on intricate roofs in that they are suited for use by the less experienced roofer.

Budget considerations may lead some to fibre cement slates, since they are cheaper than natural slate. Although natural slate may be favoured in conservation areas the visual quality of fibre cement slates means that nowadays they can blend seamlessly with historic

surroundings when natural slate cannot be sourced or is too expensive. In less sensitive areas fibre cement slates can offer the architect versatility on complex designs as well as a huge variation in colours available. High quality products have an appearance close to that of natural slate. For example, Cembrit’s Moorland slate has an attractive dressed edge making it an ideal solution where presentation is important.

Which slate for the job?Natural slate is great to look at, and is extremely tough. That said, it does need to be sorted and worked with, which adds time on site. Fibre cement options provide a cost-effective and conveniently sized alternative, and the improved quality of modern fibre cement slates has improved their durability and strength, some coming with a 30 year guarantee. Modern slates are also resistant to fire, chemicals and fungal growth, and are

unaffected by temperature changes as well as being vermin and rot proof. Meanwhile, the low fixed weight of fibre cement slates allows economical use of timber roof trusses. However, sometimes only natural slate will do, for example, when it comes to matching the roofing of a particular area or group of buildings.

In a nutshell, fibre cement slates offer consistency and convenience, whereas natural slate provides authenticity and character. As a supplier of both natural and fibre cement slate, we are in a great position to give unbiased recommendations as to which product suits your project.

Timoleon UFCH For The Retreat

On a secluded rural site near Newton Abbot in Devon known as The Retreat – local lore claims that it was once used by nuns – there now stands a stylish, modern, seven bedroomed, two-storey home. Being a new-build property the owner sensibly specified that his home should have water and central heating from renewable sources and the architect’s design included central heating from a ground sourced heat pump, with solar panels providing boosted heat for the hot water system. under-floor heating, being at the comparatively low temperature ideally suited for use with heat pump generation, was a natural choice and the owner called on Timoleon to design a uFCH system for the whole of The Retreat, which was then installed by J.P. Woollacott Plumbing & Heating of Torquay.Timoleon, specialists in bespoke under-floor heating systems, provided our Staple System for the ground floor where a screeded base made it the optimum choice and for the Aether Foilboard System on the screedless ‘floating’ floor upstairs. The Staple system is based on a gridded insulation sheet spread over the sub-floor making the establishment of the piping design extremely simple, and allowing the pipe to be speedily and permanently fixed using the stapler provided before the top screed is laid.

With the Aether system used on the first floor, the pipes are simply walked into the preformed grooves in a 35mm deep Foilboard featuring the high compressive strength necessary with a ‘floating’ floor. The aluminium finish on the board helps provide truly well spread warmth throughout the floor when the system is completed by the overlay of a tongue and groove cementitious board that acts effectively as a screed substitute. Both systems use super flexible 15mm polybutylene piping and are extremely installer friendly, as Mr. Woollacott and his staff will confirm. At The Retreat a total of 3260 metres of heating pipe was laid overall and three manifolds were used on each floor. All areas were independently zoned giving the user flexible temperature control. The Timoleon systems, being extremely reactive to heat input, are once again proving eminently suitable for use with the typically low temperature output of renewable energy heat sources and they certainly meet the requirements in this lovely new country home. www.timoleon.co.uk

NIBE Ground Sourced Heat For Cowper Farm Cottage

During a recent conversion, a delightful two bedroomed cottage at Cowper House Farm was totally refurbished and transformed with the addition of a two bedroom extension, living room and a conservatory at the rear. At the planning stage the owners decided to install central heating from a renewable source and, as a further way of conserving energy, converted the existing 9” brickwork to a cavity wall construction. Steven Bowes Building & Roofing Contractor of

Darlington, who carried out the conversion work, called on HT Energy Ltd, another local company based in Swainby, to design a suitably eco-friendly heating system. Since the cottage has a large open area to the rear, HT Energy devised a ground sourced system involving the burial of some 500 metres of ground looped plastic

piping at a depth just below the frost level, around one metre in the cold North Country. Filled with an anti-freeze solution, the pipe is linked to a NIBE F1245 8kW Heat Pump handily sited in the double garage near the cottage’s back door. The solution is warmed by the solar warmth permanently stored in the soil and is passed through to the heat pump where it is harvested into the pump’s closed system containing a refrigerant that converts liquid to gas at a comparatively low temperature. Passing through the pump’s highly efficient compressor very sharply raises the temperature before a condenser is employed

so that the resulting heat can be passed into the super-insulated hot water cylinder (situated beside the heat pump) ready for use. The F1245, one of NIBE’s new generation of pumps, is one of the most efficient on the market and as well as generating maximum heat it also cuts CO2 emissions to an absolute minimum. HT Energy, a NIBE registered VIP installer, linked the unit into the under-floor heating system on the ground floor and to the radiator heating on the first floor and the heat pump will also supply the domestic hot water requirements of the entire house. The F1245 heat pump is contained in a nicely styled unit only 1800 x 600 x 625mm in size with exceptionally clear and easily accessed controls. The unit incorporates an immersion heater in case of exceptional hot water demand coinciding with peak central heating usage but experience indicates that it is unlikely to be required. Steven Bowes, main contractor for the conversion was delighted at the ease and rapidity with which the ground sourced heating system was installed. www.nibe.co.uk

Just such a package was recently installed on the south-facing roof aspect of a two-storey home in Falklands Place in nearby Chatham, generating power for the house with the attractive bonus of selling any surplus electricity back to the Grid. The basis of the package is six FTS240 photovoltaic modules linked to provide a total output of 1.47kWp. Made in Portugal by Fluitecnic these panels employ the latest technology, are rated to an impressive 15% efficiency and carry a 10 year manufacturer’s guarantee plus an unusually full power warranty. The panels are fixed using the premium all-in-one Diconal system made by the German company Conteca GmbH and the international flavour is completed by a PV grid-tied inverter made by Samil Power in the Peoples’ Republic of China. This string inverter, in the Solar River [SR] series, is extremely efficient, reliable and flexible in use. The components of the Solarpack system were chosen on site in consultation with the owner of the property in Falklands Place and fitted by Ball Contractors of Ashford, who were impressed by the ease of installation. The owner is delighted with his solar package, which is fully living up to his high expectations at the design stage.www.solarpack-uk.com

Change Of Use Breathes New Life Into Disused Office Buildings

Cities have to constantly change and adapt to survive and no more so than the commercial centres where many fine buildings from past ages have become redundant. Fortunately, architects and property owners with vision are capitalising on this, increasingly finding new and innovative ways to keep our building heritage in active service. Many are converted to residential use, restaurants, clubs, galleries and of course Hotels, thereby maintaining the vibrancy that a city needs.

A consequence of a vibrant neighbourhood is noise and Selectaglaze, the uK’s leading specialist in secondary glazing systems has recently been involved with two Central London boutique hotel developments, The Zetter Hotel in Clerkenwell and Hotel Indigo in the Minories.

Originally a warehouse and once the home of the football pools company of the same name, the five-storey 59-room boutique Zetter Hotel opened to critical acclaim, being voted one of the world’s ‘50 coolest hotels’ by industry bible Conde Nast Traveller – and its restaurant has recently been voted the third best in the uK. The owners of the Zetter Hotel strongly believe that the health and happiness of future generations is dependent on a commitment to sustainable ways of living and working. They aim to reduce energy consumption and become carbon neutral and to work with suppliers that share their sustainability commitment.

To this end the Hotel collects fresh water via its own borehole beneath the building; has installed an energy loop system capable of swapping energy around to heat rooms and cool fridges and natural light and ventilation is provided by The Zetter’s cleverly designed central semi-elliptical atrium. The hotel had retained the building’s original sash windows and installed bi-

folding shutters to the room side of the bedrooms but this combination did not provide the required level of noise insulation. To remedy this, Selectaglaze provided sliding secondary units fitted flush to the window openings, thus allowing easy access to the shutters and external windows. This has not only produced exceptionally quiet rooms but will help considerably in reducing energy consumption.

Hotel Indigo located in The Minories, on the edge of the Square Mile within the capital’s main financial district, is a four star hotel, part of the word-wide InterContinental Hotels Group. The Indigo brand launched in America in 2004 and arrived in the uK four years later. The new hotel in The Minories is the latest in what is now a 38 strong world-wide chain. Each Hotel Indigo is unique and designed to reflect the local culture, character and geography of the surrounding area.

Occupying what was formerly an office building and bank, conversion to a top class boutique hotel and restaurant was a major architectural and interior design undertaking. As part of the conversion it was decided to replace the windows with double glazed frames but standard double glazing does not provide the levels of sound insulation needed by the guests. The solution was to install secondary glazing, thus creating triple-glazing which offered noise insulation in excess of 45dB and further improved the energy performance of the window, reducing heating costs and improving sustainability.

The secondary windows were made bespoke to ensure the best fit and included horizontal sliding, vertical sliding and hinged casements all finished in a grey powder paint to blend with the new external windows.

THE BOOK/PROJECTS

Selectaglaze’s secondary windows are designed to maintain the character of the property and are accepted by all Heritage bodies. Frames have a permanent, easily maintained finish usually white but a wide choice of colour options together with a selection of timber-grained finishes are available to suit almost any décor. The ability to shape and curve frames and discrete installation ensures sympathetic treatment.

Refurbishments are often fast track projects requiring close cooperation between client, contractor, specialists and the professional team. Selectaglaze has wide experience of working in buildings up to Grade 1 listed and offers a technical advisory service and specification advice to ensure correct interface with other trades. Programmes are particularly important and proactive site surveys linked to a modern production facility working on Lean principles ensures that projects are delivered on time and installation undertaken with minimal disruption, which is particularly important when working within Hotels.

Founded in 1966, Royal Warrant holder Selectaglaze has gained a reputation as one of the country’s leading secondary glazing specialists and, as such, has led the way with innovative and informative literature – including the company’s new Product Guide and Energy Conservation Guidance Notes. Selectaglaze’s literature is free upon request. www.selectaglaze.co.uk

Celotex Finds The Best Pitch At Dorset Holiday ParkOn Dorset’s spectacular Jurassic Coast, The Freshwater Holiday Park near Bridport is proving to be no dinosaur and is setting itself apart from other campsites with a brand new £3.5 million leisure complex. The design had to incorporate insulation versatile enough to withstand the dramatically changing weather and climate conditions. High performance floor and wall insulation from leading PIR

manufacturer Celotex met the challenge by helping to create a thermally efficient building envelope which was unaffected by temperature cycles. Sub contractor, Woodmace Civil Engineering installed 600m² of 100mm thick CW4000 within the

cavity walls and 1500m² of 50mm thick Celotex GA4000 beneath the concrete floors. Made from PIR (polyisocyanurate) with foil facers for improved emissivity, Celotex CW4000 achieves an excellent lambda of 0.022W/mK, helping the project meet the desired u-values. Celotex provided 100mm thick CW4000 for the cavity block walls of the steel framed building. To insulate the floor and to avoid loss of heat, 50mm thick Celotex GA4000 was laid on the structural base then covered in poured concrete. www.celotex.co.uk

Medite Tricoya Opens Doors As The ‘Perfect Product’AMS Joinery of Maidstone has been working on a Victorian town house in Notting Hill in London which has undergone a full refurbishment to bring the property back to its former glory. As the new home of a London property developer, the owner had specific designs in mind intended to retain as much of the property’s period feel as possible. One of AMS Joinery’s tasks

was to manufacture and install a large No. 10 Downing Street-style front door to the newly renovated property; a job for which the stability and durability of new Medite Tricoya MDF, the ground-breaking new panel product from a joint development agreement with Medite Europe & Accsys Technologies.Darren Smith, AMS Joinery’s workshop foreman, said, “Front door panels of this size can have issues including splitting and the necessary subsequent repair, and we were looking for an alternative which would enable us to create a perfect and durable product first time. We became aware of Medite’s new MDF Medite Tricoya around the time of its launch at Timber

Expo in September and it was clearly developed for a good reason. It doesn’t move, it easily handles wet environments without change and has proved to be the perfect product for us.”AMS Joinery found that Medite Tricoya machined cleanly to an impressively high standard. The chosen finish for the door was a black gloss polyester spray, which gave it a smooth gloss finish with no brush marks. Mr. Smith concluded,

“It’s a more expensive product, but the value and benefits of Medite Tricoya save so many potential problems, including repair and re-manufacture. It is well worth it, both for us and our clients and we’ve already taken more orders from customers for which we will use Medite Tricoya.” Medite Tricoya has been demonstrated to have superior dimensional stability and durability, even in changing weather conditions, meaning it can now be used in situations and applications where wood and wood-based products would not usually be considered. Extensive performance testing has been carried out by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in the uK concluded that Medite Tricoya would carry a durability class (under EN350-2) of 1, or very durable; a durability equivalent to teak and more durable than oak. BRE concluded that Medite Tricoya could meet demands for a desired service life of 60 years when used in exterior applications. Such is the confidence of Medite with this new product that it carries a 50 year warranty.Medite Tricoya marks one of the first true innovations in the wood composites industry in more than 30 years.
