Burleigh’s 28th Birthday Celebrated in Style

There was a real buzz as five squares and three callers joined in the celebrations for Burleigh’s 28th Birthday on Saturday, 16th July. Dancers from as far afield as Lismore and Brisbane converged on the Maher Hall to dance to the calling of Alan Evans, Kay Walker and Andrew Reid, and they were not disappointed!

We were thrilled to have special guests, Olive and Charles Watson, who were so instrumental in the formation of our club way back then. Our club looks forward to the next 28 years and welcomes any travelling dancers to drop in and dance with us on a Saturday night.

    Vale – Graham Brandon

    1926 - 2016

Graham Brandon born 9th October 1926, eldest child of Stan and Lorna Brandon. Graham had a sister Rhonda, then 6 months after her birth their Mother passed away. The two Children moved in with their Grandparents, while Graham’s Father Stan worked to support his family. Stan eventually remarried and the family were blessed with three children Val, Vonnie and Beth. Graham loved to sing from a young age and along with his Father, who was the Church Organist and his revered Uncle Norm, the Choir Conductor, the passion for music and the importance of clear diction were instilled from an early age. He sang with the Brandon Brothers and the Hill End Methodist choir.

At one of the Church’s Young People’s Camp he met the love of his life, Margaret Fysh. He de-scribes her as five foot three, 7 stone, with long dark hair. “His heart skipped a beat”. On 3 March 1951, Graham married Margaret. Graham and Margaret have three lovely children, Bev, Lee and Darren, and in later years enjoyed seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His family were Graham’s world, together they spent many holidays camping, caravanning and enjoying quali-ty time together. There was laughter at the Celebration of his life over some of these holiday pho-tos. Graham had a long and established working career, from his first job as an electrical apprentice in 1941, to running his own business for 35 years, known as “Brandons Electrical Service” at Salisbury, which the goodwill developed over that time continues with this business still operating under the same name today. Graham’s business ethos and financial independence are strong values he lived by.

Graham would not do things by halves, fully committing even in social environments, but he loved singing and dancing and in 1973 he started to learn to Square Dance with Dr Ivor Burge. Graham then combined his beautiful singing voice and worked to become a Caller. He established various clubs including Toe Tappers, Ocean Waves, Mothar Mountain Moonshiners and Carina Carousels. Square dancing took Graham and Margaret on multiple trips to Canada and the United States. From there, he shared his experiences through events such as hosting a Square Dance in the Chandler Pool for the 1982 Australian Square Dance Convention. Graham’s passion for music and dance meant that he wanted to give back to Community as a whole, subsequently he dedicated hours to teaching wheel chair bound children from Montrose Home how to Square Dance. There was not a dry eye in the house when this group danced to his calling and music at Chandler and Cloudland. Graham Brandon held various Committee positions during this time including Society Vice Presi-dent in 1979 and President from 1980 to 1987. He was the TAA Liaison Officer for the 1979 Austral-ian National Square Dance Convention. As Husband and Wife, were Co-Convenors for both the Australian National in 1982 and the 1988 Expovention. He recently received recognition for his years of Calling Service with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Queensland Callers Association, as a retired “State Caller”. Graham’s Funeral Service was held at Buderim Lawn Crematorium Chapel on the 15th July, 2016 and was attended by a large group of family, friends and people whom he had touched throughout his life. One of his requests in his Memoirs was to play the song “If I Could Help Somebody, Then My Life Will Not Be In Vain”, a life well lived. Our deepest Sympathy to Margaret, Bev, Lee, Darren and all the extended Family.

Rest in Peace Graham, you can sing and dance with the angels, your beautiful sound will remain in our hearts forever.

Our heartfelt sincere thanks are extended to all who have

expressed their sympathy and condolences at this sad time.

We celebrated Graham’s life on the 15th July in a beautiful

way. A request from Graham was that we play “If I Can Help

Somebody”. If you get the opportunity to listen to the words

you will understand. We left the Chapel to Graham calling

“Oh Lord It’s Hard to be Humble”.

In Graham’s words he has now started his “Big Long Snore”.

    SUNCOASTERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB

Suncoasters’ members trust that all of you who attended the National Convention here

at Buderim had a great time that you will remember for many years. We also hope

that you had good trips back home and are enjoying your own club activities. Our

club is now back to normal also. One couple from Adelaide are still with us enjoying

    our Queensland winter.

As well as the Convention we had a great night on 4 July with our visiting callers from

overseas and our hall was packed to overflowing. Our next interesting event will be a ‘Hippies and Hipsters’ night on 30 July to which

we are looking forward to be followed by the 31st anniversary of our Square Dance

Centre to which you are all invited on 6 August.

CITY HALL SQUARE DANCE CLUB We dance every Tuesday from 10am to 12 noon on the Basement level of City Hall.

Our caller is Kay Walker and she can be contacted on 0419 717 520. Following on from our article in the Bugle for July (see page 12), Annette who is one of our dancers and is also an Occupational Therapist has given us some information

about some the personal benefits to an individual’s well being that can be gained by participating in square dancing. This can be helpful especially when talking to people

who might be thinking about starting to Square Dance. Cognitive-Perceptual Health = Thinking & Percieving

    1. improving your concentration and lengthening your attention span (you cannot af-ford to get distracted if you are going to follow the calls and do the moves with your set!) 2. improving your visual-spatial perception and proprioceptive skills (increasing the speed and efficacy with which you navigate movement of your body parts in relation

to each other and to the people and environment in your immediate surrounds; un-derstanding dance moves and being able to translate them into your moves on the floor) 3. improving your listening skills and auditory perception skills (listening attentively to dance move calls against a background of music: auditory figure ground; antici-

pating the call instructions before the caller has finished saying them: auditory clo-sure) 3. improving your musicality, sequencing and rhythm

    4. practising your auditory, visual and kinesthetic memory

Thanks Annette, and look out for one last section of information on health benefits in the next edition of the Bugle. We all want to stay healthy!!

    Gumdale Grandsliders Square Dance Club

Mainstream, Plus, Clogging, Round Dancing – phew! All that energy!

The National Convention is over for another year and massive thanks to all who contributed to its

success. The Sunshine Coast hasn’t seen so many big skirts and bolos for a very long time. The “old

hands” met up with old friends and, no doubt, made new ones. The newer dancers report being some-

what daunted but exhilarated at the same time. The Conventions are a wonderful opportunity for our

hard-working callers to enjoy a dance with their partners, catch up with their fellow callers from all

over Australia and get acquainted with guest overseas callers. Gumdale Grandsliders dancers, being

accustomed to our Aussie/”Brummie” (Birmingham, England born) caller, Alan Evans, had little

trouble tuning into British and American accents, not to mention that strange one from South Aus-

tralia. We were fortunate to have Geoff Seidel (the South Australian owner of the strange accent) call

at our club prior to and after the Convention, thus giving us the opportunity to get familiar with his

    style of calling.

Sadly, this month we said good-bye to our old friend, Graham Brandon. He and Margaret were

valued members of our club for the last few years before they moved up to Buderim.

The songs he wrote for special square dance occasions may not have been up to Irving Berlin stand-

ards but they were always enjoyed and appreciated. We will all miss him very much.

Cairns City Square Dance Club The Club has continued to dance each Friday night still with some members

”missing in action”. Debbie has returned from her holiday with family in Melbourne.

Dian and Henry are touring UK and were in rainy Scotland when last I heard from

them. Wendy is now touring China. Margaret is due to return very soon from Canada

and Jean and Col are still tripping around Queensland.

Our visitors this month were Bernadette Young and Stuart McEachern from Mt Gam-

bia, South Aust. We were pleased to have them with us and enjoyed their company.

Due to members being on holidays and others with other commitments only 3 or 4

members will be attending the Cardwell Dance next month.

That is all our news for this month until my next report.

    Janet Hansen - Publicity Officer

    Rambling Eights Square Dance Club

Rambling Eights “Holland Park” have had a very active month.

We are generally dancing 4-5 sets each Friday and the atmosphere has been good.

The dancers who started on the 1st April are coming along well and are now learning

some of the mainstream moves. David is taking the teaching easy so that the new

dancers can get to know and learn the steps thoroughly. We have also welcomed some

additional dancers who have returned to the activity.

We held our half yearly planning meeting and included a “Bring a Meal to Share”.

This was attended by 40 dancers and fruitful planning was achieved. In conjunction

with this meeting we invited 6 Guests of Honour. These were dancers from the past

who danced with Rambling Eights and contributed much to the club over many years.

We presented certificates to Arthur & Norma Morgan, Leon & Terese Rafalski, Jackie

Morgan and Mary Watkins. It was lovely for dancers to catch up with them and to

    share some of their experiences.

Our traditional “Christmas in July” dance attracted over 50 dancers including dancers

visiting from other clubs. Peter Story added his calling to the program as did Dawn

Keenan and Dougal Findlay. David brought out several of his “Christmas“ tunes.

Some dancers are now taking advantage of the meals provided by “James the Cook”

in the bar before the dance. His variety of Burgers and other snack meals are often a

good choice for dancers who prefer not to have to cook before coming out. It seems that couples are going on holidays a lot lately. Two are away now for 5

weeks, then over the next three weeks three more couples head overseas. We wish

them all a lovely holiday and safe return.

    HERVEY BAY SQUARE DANCE CLUB

Hi Everyone, A great convention once again. Suncoasters did a wonderful job. The callers were brilliant. We loved Paul Bristow's calling and are so pleased he will be here again for our convention next year. The American callers put on a great night for their 4th July dance too. Gary Petersen called at our club on 9th July. He had us rock and rolling and twisting to 50's and 60's music. What a great array of different music he has to call to. We welcomed visitors from Adelaide, Allan and Anne as well as Maryborough. Next weekend we are looking forward to dance to Matthew Mills calling in Maryborough for their Xmas in July dance. Those who love to dance to Matthew can catch him again at Hervey Bay on 3rd September for our Springtime Blues Dance. Start planning now to join us for that fun occasion. Matthew will do a Plus afternoon starting at 2 pm and a Mainstream night at 7pm. For more info, go to www.squaredancingherveybay.com.au. Bye for now, happy dancing from us at Hervey Bay.
