National EDA Member States’ Defence Data 2013

This document provides national defence data of the 27 EDA Member States for the years 2012-2013. For Croatia, which became the 27th EDA Member State on 1 July 2013, only 2013 data is available.

All data is provided by the Ministries of Defence of the EDA Member States, based on the list of indicators approved by the Agency’s Ministerial Steering Board in 2007, and all financial indicators refer to actual expenditure.

The structure of the document follows that of the Defence Data 2013 booklet, where the indicators are grouped under four sections, represented in the headings:

I. General: macro-economic data to show how defence budgets relate to GDP and overall government spending.

II. Reform: (a) personnel numbers to show the ratio between the military and civilians employed in defence and (b) major categories of defence budget spending - personnel; investment, including research and development (R&D)/research and technology (R&T); operation and maintenance (O&M) and others - to show what defence budgets are spent on.

III. European collaboration: for defence equipment procurement and R&T, to show to what extent the EDA MS are investing together.

IV. Deployability: military deployed in crisis management operations to show the ratio between deployments and total military personnel; and costs of deployed operations.
