INTRODUCTION TO CONFERENCE BACKGROUND

“In the past the man has been first; in the future the system must be first.”

― Frederick Winslow Taylor

Management in all business and organizational activities is the act of coordinating the efforts of people to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. The most important management priorities include: achieving things through people, delivering a satisfactory level of return on inputs, maximizing the use of resources, understanding and operating within the constraints of the environment and coping with change and uncertainty. All managerial capability and expertise is driven by these priorities.

The foundations of managerial expertise are dealt with the development of critical thinking, judgment and decision making. This foundation of management lies on four pillars namely- planning, organizing, directing and controlling. But the scope of management is not limited to these four principles. The available literature on doctrines of management enshrined in the ancient scriptures is very scanty and scattered. This necessitates detailed and meticulous deliberations on the issue. It further requires inculcation of a value system conducive for promoting the knowledge in the area of foundations of management.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE

The proposed seminar provides a survey of classic management thought. The goal is to investigate the research works and classics whose frameworks and philosophies have shaped management theory and practice. It will also explore the impact of these works on decision making in organizations. Participants will become familiar with the content and perspective of some of the most dynamic concepts in management. This will enhance their ability to think conceptually about how to understand and frame issues and problems facing organizations. This seminar thus provides a valuable foundation for future research and teaching.
