The most free-spirited dancing wasin Brian Brookss Torrent, which

explores that choreographers loveaffair with lines and formation.

Members of the cast stretchedthemselves across the stage in a

long horizontal row before peelingoff like soldiers or Busby Berkeley

dancers. In the second section, they broke through the rigid

    patterns with brief, explosive solos.

Brian Brooks rightly won ovations.Mr. Brooks's number is a crescendowith feet starting still; the controlledviolence of his performance is

    marvelous.

Brian Brooks unleashed the tightlycontrolled chaos of his conceptualchoreographic style at Dallas CityPerformance Hall this weekend in vedistinct works that have establishedhim as the it boy of contemporary

    American dance.

There was a mathematical logic to hisdesign-heavy pieces Saturday thesecond of a two-night stand presented

by TITAS his agile New York-basedtroupe, the Brian Brooks MovingCompany, feverishly executing hismaniacal minimalism.

The artistic director opened the showhimself with a 2007 solo called ImGoing to Explode, set to the LCDSoundsystem pop tune Losing MyEdge, for Brooks an ironic lamentabout no longer being cool. Dressed in asuit, he began seated in a chair facingthe wings and calmly removed hisshoes and jacket before rising to movelike an electried Gumby. Feet planted,he looked like a Stop Making Sense-eraDavid Byrne as he swung and snaked

his arms and later shimmied hisshoulders and hips while standing inone spot. Simultaneously wild anddisciplined, Explode hinted at the waythat the rest of the pieces on the bill

would create stylized elegance out ofrepetitive mechanical movement.

The most successful was this yearsDivision in which props, sound andchoreography meshed as if solving ageometry problem. Six dancers slid

woods boards along the oor and then began passing and lifting them likepartners. Scraping sounds made itseem like the path of the boards was

being amplied, and the movement ofthe panels also appeared to govern themovement of the performers as if the

boards were emitting a force eld. Theholistic effect was hypnotic.

Descent (2011) was more strippeddown and mysterious. Lit by bands ofhorizontal white light amid fog, dancersin shiny bodysuits slowly carried oneanother across the stage on their backsin the cinematic rst section. Thefuturistic feel continued in subsequentsequences built around repetitive armswings, performers leaping onto oneanother, and a gimmicky section during

whi ch two swaths of she er fabricdanced aloft like the plastic bag in

    American Beauty.

Even more pared down was Motor(2010), a mesmerizing study inhopping on one leg by Brooks andMatthew Albert. The show closed withTorrent (2013), the roundest piece onthe program. Eight dancers peeled off aline to join the other end of theassembly or to solo separately from thegroup. By the end, they were whirlinglike dervishes.
