A Testimonial from a Rose Garden Society Member: Virginia Kelley

Virginia Kelley has lived in her lovely home in Kansas City for over 30 years. She grew up in Yonkers, New York and attended William & Mary College and Yale Drama School. She met her husband, who worked for IBM, in Dallas on a blind date. Like all IBMers during that time, they were relocated several times all over the country, but luckily for us, ended up settling down in Kansas City. She has two daughters, one in Florida, the other in South Carolina, and several grandchildren, who refer to her as “Nana”.

Virginia is proud to be a member of Rose Brooks Center's Rose Garden Society by including Rose Brooks Center in her estate plans. We are extremely grateful to Virginia and the other members of the Rose Garden Society as they are leaving a very important and thoughtful legacy to Rose Brooks Center. Virginia was especially pleased to learn that as a member of the Rose Garden Society, she will be getting her own donor paver, which she can have engraved with a personal message and which will be installed on our campus this fall.

Virginia was introduced to Rose Brooks Center by some friends who had been volunteering at our previous shelter location. She has been very active with Rose Brooks Center's events, particularly our annual Cabaret evenings. We are also delighted that Virginia will be participating as an Advisor to Rose Brooks Center's “A Brighter Tomorrow” Campaign. Virginia is very active with several Kansas City organizations and we are very fortunate to have her participation. Virginia was delighted to learn of Rose Brook's upcoming partnership with Habitat for Humanity, an organization in which he was very involved.

Virginia notes how important it is to share, how the world needs more love and how we need to express our love. “Whenever I talk to my grandchildren, I always encourage them to say “I love you Nana” before they say goodbye to me.” She has been very impressed with Rose Brooks Center and is constantly donating special items for the children. She noted: “Rose Brooks does great work… it's amazing what goes on there… the children need to be loved!” Even if they don't know her personally, we are sure that the children at our center would say: “Thank you Nana!” and “I love you Nana!” to our dear friend Virginia.

Rose Garden Society members are leaving a legacy to Rose Brooks Center by including Rose Brooks in their estate plans. If you would like to join Virginia and become a member of the Rose Garden Society, please contact Maria Belsito at 816-523-5550 ext. 435, or [email protected].

In 1978, a dedicated community

philanthropist, Rosa Brooks, donated her house to

become the first 19-bed emergency shelter for

battered women in Kansas City. Since then, Rose

Brooks Center has become a nationally recognized

organization that provides comprehensive family

violence services from a state-of-the-art facility.

We've never forgotten where we've come

from, and a terrific new arrival this year reminded

us of how important Rosa Brooks still is in the

hearts of some Kansas City families. Larry Brooks

(Rosa's grandson) and his wife Mary Ellen shared

the exciting news with us about their newest

grandchild, Mallory K. Brooks, born on March st31 of this year.

Larry and Mary Ellen told us they wanted to do

something special to commemorate Mallory's birth and

chose to purchase a donor paver in her honor (see photo).

While Rosa Brooks has five great, great, grandchildren

(Mallory, Rose, Emma, Logan, and Mari) Mallory is the

youngest and only great, great grandchild who still bears the

Brooks' family name.

You too can commemorate a special event in your life, a

loved one, a new milestone, or simply purchase a paver to

help pave the way to safety for thousands of women and

children each year with your purchase of a donor paver.

Simply complete the donor paver order form located on the

following page, and be a part of Rose Brooks Center history

today!

Your tax-deductible contribution allows you to inscribe

a paving stone to line the pathways at the Rose Brooks

Center Emergency Shelter. Pavers will be engraved and

installed Fall 2005. Please return your completed order

form (page 6) in the enclosed envelope, or you can fax it

to 816-523-8177. If you have questions or need additional

information, please contact Andrea Umbreit at

816-523-5550, ext. 423, or [email protected].

The 18th Annual Rose Brooks Center Cabaret was held Sunday, February 27th at the Fairmont Hotel. Guests enjoyed a wonderful dinner, and then listened to America's romantic piano sensation, Jim Brickman. The evening raised $441,065 for Rose Brooks Center!

Special thanks to Katie & Clyde Wendel, honorary chairs, Maryanne Roepke, event chair, our three presenting underwriters: American Century Companies, Inc., DST Systems, Inc and Mark & Susan Susz, and other benefactors and guests for making this year's event so successful.

Planning will begin soon for the 19th Annual Cabaret taking place February 2006. Judy and Robert Hoehn will serve as the 2006 honorary chairs. To learn more about Cabaret sponsorship opportunities, please contact Gina Garvin at 816-523-5550, ext. 418, or [email protected].

Nearly 350 guests gathered at the Fairmont Hotel on April 19th for the 3rd Annual Walk in Their Shoes Luncheon. Guests heard from passionate, moving speakers such as our very own Susan Miller, Executive Director. In addition, Michael, a 17 year-old Project Safe student recalled his difficult childhood living with drugs and violence and the transformation in his life due to the help of Rose Brooks Center staff. Joyce, a resident in our Transitional Housing program moved the crowd to tears as she recalled her desperate situation fleeing her abuser. Joyce is now a beacon of strength and a successful woman who will soon be a homeowner for the first time in her life.

Success stories like these abound at Rose Brooks Center and so does the generosity of our donors. During this luncheon, $75,000 in gifts and pledges was raised to support our mission to break the cycle of domestic violence. Special thanks to Kate

Ferrell Banks, Chair and our table captains for making this event so successful. The next luncheon will be held in May 2006. If you are interested in serving as a table captain or would like to participate as a sponsor, please contact Andrea Umbreit at 816-523-5550, ext. 423 or [email protected].
