Public service posters, photography and art direction for OLASS, a program for teenage youth offenders in London to put them back into education or training. Rathbone, London, UK

The posters and brochure (next page) were used exclusively in the London area and targeted to teenagers on the streets. We conducted a focus group with London teens currently in the program and

created the materials based on that feedback and other statistical and market research.

I want a job but don’t know what I can do?We will explore your job options with you. We will help you think about what you want to be, and work out what you need to do to get there.

Try a work placementWe find an employer who is willing to give you a chance to do a job for a couple of weeks in their organisation. You might work in a shop as an assistant, in a hotel kitchen, in a photography lab where they print photos or as an administrator in an office. We will work to find a placement that really interests you.

If I got a job interview, howwould you help?We will make sure that you know about the company you are going to and have the rights clothes to wear. We will practice the interview with you so that you know what you are going to say. We can come with you and make you sure you find the right place. We will then wait for you to finish the interview.

What qualification will I be doing?You will be working towards gaining a ‘Skills for Life qualification’. This award will help you move on to college or on to vocational training. You might start an Apprenticeship or you could move straight into a job.

I didn’t do very well at school, what happens if I don’t understand the course?We will work with you until you are confident you know what you are doing. If you don’t understand, we will help you until you do.

What else will I be doing?We can offer you a chance to try work tasters. This means working with a person in a company and getting to know what they do. You would then decide if you might like to do that for a living.

When can I start the course?If you have a YOT or Probation worker have them to contact us on your behalf. Or you can contact us directly on 020 7243 4812. We will make an appointment to meet you and you can start as soon as you are ready.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Options and Choices is a course for people who are 16 and over, who have been in trouble with the law.

It aims to help you with your English, Maths and life skills. There is also lots of help for you if English isn’t your first language.

We understand that there may be other things in your life bothering you such as friends, family, housing, drugs or

alcohol - all the things that might stop you from getting a qualification or finding a job. You will get one-to-one help and support to deal with these things, if you need it. We also work closely with your YOT or Probation worker, so everyone works together on supporting you.

Usually we ask people to attend a couple of hours a day, 3 or 4 times a week, for about 12 weeks. Your travel and

lunch is paid for. Lessons take place in small groups and one-to-one sessions. We will work with you to find the way

of learning that suits you best.

The property checklist below will help you evaluate your property. Please review this information and take steps to

locate potential problems early.

STRUCTURESInspect the following parts of your structure on a regular basis:

TIPSKeep the following tips in mind in regards to your property:

Mow and maintain the lawn. Keep driveways in good repair. Remove inoperable vehicles from property. Make sure your house numbers are visible. Make sure sidewalks are clear for passage. Do not park commercial vehicles in residential

neighborhoods. Make sure your pool is clean and has a fence/barrier

around it. Check your water meter to be sure it is not covered by

grass, sand or other obstacles. If you have a home occupation (business conducted

from your home), make sure it is properly licensed and meets the criteria for a home occupation (call

833-9518). Make sure to remove your refuse container from the

street promptly on collection day.

If you receive a notice from the City concerning your property,

please take prompt action to correct the violation. If you have

questions about a violation or how to bring your property into

compliance, call the Neighborhood Improvement Division at

833-9601 or 833-9603. Please respond to the notice so that

City staff can assist you in bringing the violation into compliance.

If action is not taken, a notice will be issued to appear before

the Code Enforcement Board. The Code Enforcement Board

will hear your case and make a decision concerning a time

frame to correct the violation.

If you receive notice of a violation, take action to correct it. If you have questions, call:

The City of Fort Walton Beach asks its citizens

to help maintain the quality of life in their

neighborhoods by taking responsibility for the

maintenance of their own properties. Most citizens

keep their houses and yards attractive and are

considerate of their neighbor’s desire to live in a safe

and appealing neighborhood.

Unfortunately, some properties are not well

maintained. In extreme cases, property conditions

create nuisances and safety hazards. These properties

reduce the quality of life in a neighborhood and may

contribute to falling property values.

To preserve the character and value of neighborhoods,

the City of Fort Walton Beach has enacted codes

which specifically prohibit unsafe and unsightly

conditions. Many codes related to residential

properties are outlined in this brochure for your

reference. For details on any of these reg-ulations, call

the Neighborhood Improvement Division at 833-9601

or 833-9603. To obtain information on permits needed

for improvements, call the Zoning and Building

Division at 833-9605.

Condition of StructureThe maintenance of a structure is the responsibility of the property owner. Any wood, siding, shingles, roof coverings, railings, fences, porches, doors, windows, screens and other parts of the exterior structure must be maintained in weather-tight, rodent-proof condition. Paint, brick or siding is required on the exteriorof structures. When making improvements, make sure you contact the Zoning and Building Division at 833-9605 to check if the repairs you are planning require a building permit.

Yard MaintenanceYards should be mowed regularly. Dead vegitation should be removed from the property and disposed of properly.

Inoperable VehiclesAn inoperable vehicle is a vehicle that cannot be driven and includes automobiles, trucks, boats and trailers. Vehicles parked or stored on the property must have a valid license

plate or other registration certificate and be in working condition.

Pool MaintenancePools should be enclosed by a fence or other barrier at least four feet above the ground. Residents are encouraged to keep their pools in a sanitary condition, which helps prevent the proliferation of rodents, frogs and mosquitoes.

House NumbersAll homes must have house numbers affixed to the building and clearly visible from the street. The Arabic numerals must be at least three inches in height, one half inch in

width and must be a contrasting color to the building. This assists emergency vehicles in locating the correct address.

Water Meter ObstructionsWater meters cannot be obstructed or covered in any

way. Meter readers and other City employees must be able to quickly locate the meter.

Garbage & Yard WasteGarbage and yard waste should not be left in the yard.

Refuse containers and recycling bins should be placed at the curb after 7 p.m. the evening before

collection and removed no later than 7 p.m. on collection day. If you have an item too large for the container (mattresses, sofas, etc.), call 833-9655 to arrange for pick up. Help keep your neighborhood street attractive by bringing in your refuse container promptly on collection day.

Sidewalk Maintenance/ObstructionsResidents are responsible for keeping the sidewalks on their property clear of trash, debris and litter. Bushes and trees should be trimmed so they do not obstruct the sidewalk, and irrigation systems should not overspray the sidewalk.

Commercial VehiclesCity codes do not allow the parking or storage of commercial vehicles, trucks, tractors, semitrailers or tandem trailer trucks in residential areas. Call the Neighborhood Improvement Division at 833-9601 or 833-9603 for more information.

Home OccupationsHome occupations are allowed in all residential areas, although they require a home occupations license. They must be secondary to the residential use of the structure and there can be no visible evidence of the home occupation, except for an unlighted name plate which is no more than one square foot in area. For more information about home occupations, call the Tax and License Division at 833-9518.

LogoGreat Wester Ambulance Service Trust logo

A logo is a vital element of a successful corporate identity. It should be used consistently at all times.

The standard logo is available as an ‘eps’, ‘tiff’ and ‘jpeg’ and can beimported directly into your documents. Please contact the Communications Team on 01249 858 670 or 01249 858 764 to obtain the logo in any of these formats.

The essential elements

There are four components which make up the Great WesternAmbulance Service Trust logo.

It is our aim at Great Western Ambulance Service that our patients receive the right care at the right time and in the right place. This no longer just means rapid responses to 999 calls or transporting patients to hospital, it is challenging us to develop into the mobile, urgent healthcare service of the NHS.

Entrance to care has often meant entering the doors of an accident and emergency unit - whether or not it was appropriate. Our emerging urgent care services provide joined up partnership-working to assess, treat and arrange alternative care options. Even where admission to hospital is the right solution, we aim to arrange it directly with the appropriate ward.

We are investing in and developing the skills of our staff to respond to this changing agenda. We are currently training 53 Paramedics as Emergency Care Practitioners and will train a further 20 next year. We are giving another 80 Ambulance Practitioners the opportunity to qualify as Paramedics. We are also recruiting more Emergency Care Assistants.

Next year will bring further challenges about which we will be consulting with our staff and the public. We need to work efficiently and cost effectively and are proposing to centralise our patient transport call centres into a single hub. We

are already starting to base our clinical services in GP and Minor Injury Units. We need to examine whether we can sustain and improve our response times if we base emergency ambulances alongside such clinical care, rather than from existing ambulance stations.

Change is inevitable as we respond to the urgent healthcare service relevant to today’s patient. This means a challenging working environment for our staff, but their commitment to their patients is clear. This year they have saved more lives, transported more

people more quickly, and developed our urgent care services. It is therefore right that this year’s annual report is led by our staff, taking you on a journey

through the services we offer explaining

what they do.

Gloucestershire is leading theway on urgent care with its“Hub for Health and SocialCare”. Gloucestershire’sout of hours service is runin partnership betweenGloucestershire PCT andGWAS.

Anita Harris, a Paramedicexplains:

“We are there to help bothpatients phoning in directlyand also to support otherhealthcare professionals. Wework very closely with socialservices care co-ordinators, GPsand District Nurses. We haveaccess to local services andresources at our finger tips.Call Handlers pass us calls toassess and we look for the bestsolution.

A lady who wasthe sole carerfor her disabledhusband neededto go into hospitalurgently, but shewas reluctant toleave him. The Paramedic rang us to see if we could help. We arranged with the Social Care Co-ordinator for a respite bed for her husband and transport to get him there and the lady was then happy to go into hospital.”

Dr Jasmine Goraya is one ofthree doctors on call eachnight who with their drivercan travel anywhere acrossGloucestershire on home visits.

“We get calls from the centreand information comes to thecomputer in our car aboutpatients who have beenreferred for a home visit. Wehave access to a much widerrange of equipment and drugsthan a GP visiting a patient,

who would often have to referthe patient to hospital.

I recently saw a gentleman in his 50s who had terminal cancer. He didn’t want to go back to hospital again, but was in great pain and dehydrateddue to vomiting. I was able toset up an intravenous drip andprovide him with morphineand drugs to stop his vomiting.Via the hub I spoke to theDistrict Nurse on-call whocame in to set up a continuouspain killing infusion with themedication I was able to leave.My treatment is relayed bythe car’s computer back to thehub and automatically faxedthrough to GP surgeries.”

Ambulance crews are responsible for cleaning their vehicles day to day, but preventing cross-infection is vital when you have patient after patient in the back of your ambulance. This year we started to employ new GWAS Make Ready Teams to ‘deep clean’ our vehicles.

62 staff and managers support our •operations, including 12 mechanics and 5 make ready personnel.

We deep cleaned• 723 ambulancesOver 200 staff registered for the •NHS core learning infection control package. We agreed a contract with Royal •United Hospital NHS Trust for infection control advice, audit, and trainingSince its implementation in •November 2007 infection control advice has been available around the clock We have included infection control in •our specification for new ambulances across the Trust.

Next year

New uniform trousers will provide •greater infection control as they are treated with Permaguard a special layer that reduces the risk of infection being carried on the garment. New short-sleeved shirts and fob •watches will help ambulance staff remain bare below the elbow to improve hand hygieneWe will be producing a patient •information leaflet GWAS is taking part in the ‘Clean •Your Hands’ campaign which will be launched on 30th June.

Mickey Mack is a one of the new team, deep cleaning vehicles.

“As a retired Paramedic, I know just how vital infection control is both for our patients and for us as staff. GWAS started a programme of deep cleaning ambulances in April 2007 and it’s my job as part of the Make Ready Team, to ensure all vehicles are deep cleaned every four to five weeks or whenever there have been any contamination by bodily fluids. We’ve

had a great response from the ambulance and vehicle crews who have commented on the pleasure of going on duty in such a nice clean vehicle.”

Rathbone is a national, voluntary sector, education and training provider.

VisionWe believe that every young person has the ability to learn, to make progress and to achieve.

PurposeWe give young people who are experiencing significant disadvantages the right opportunities to learn and to achieve.

Our client groupWith more than 70 centres across the UK, Rathbone engages with over 13,000 young people each year:

• 90% have no GCSEs grade A-C• over 50% have a reading age of less than an 11 year old• 90% have additional learning and/or social needs.

Our successOn leaving our programmes:

• almost 50% have completed entry level programmes• over 50% have achieved an NVQ level 2 or Apprenticeship• over 75% of those approached through our youth engagement projects have moved into training, education or work.

Our aim is to establish volunteering and parenting support

Entry to Employment (e2e) - England Age 16-19Get Ready for Work - ScotlandSkill Build and Skill Build + - Wales

We provide training, support and nationally recognised qualifications for young people who are not yet ready to access work or study, and help them build their confidence to progress into further education, training or work.

Apprenticeships Age 16-24

We offer Apprenticeships which comprise a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2 or level 3, Key Skills and a sector-relevant technical certificate in a range of areas, including retail, motor vehicle and childcare.

Youth Engagement Age 14-19

We offer outreach services to engage with young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) to encourage them back into work, college or training. We also work on a range of projects with young people who have offended.

Biography

Brenda Whitfield has worked on the Florida Gulf Coast for

more than 10 years as a graphic designer, creative director

and owner of BK Design Group and Postcard Central, Inc.

She currently owns Go Get Creative Design and Marketing, a

branding and marketing company, in Navarre, Florida.

She has more than 18 years in the creative services industry,

including more than seven years living and working in the

UK and Germany. Although the company’s focus is on small

to medium size service organizations, she has a wealth of

experience with many types of organizations, from small

service-based companies to large multi-national public-sector

clients on both a corporate and regional outreach level. This

level of experience has given her a unique perspective and a

fresh outlook on today’s marketing problems.

She holds a Bachelors of Communications with an emphasis

in Public Relations from the University of West Florida,

Pensacola, Florida, and a Master’s degree in Managing Creative

Enterprises, Norwich University College of the Arts, Norwich

UK. She has been awarded multiple Gold and Silver ADDYS,

two Judges Choice awards and an Angel Award from the 4th

District American Advertising Federation (AAF), and Awards

of Excellence from the Southern Public Relations Federation.

She has also judged several local ADDY competitions.

As a past president of the Emerald Coast Advertising Federation,

she won President of the Year and ECAF was named Club

of the Year, 4th District AAF Region 4, District I. That same

year, ECAF was awarded the National AAF Club Management

Achievement Award, District III.

She is currently involved in the Small Business Development

Committe at the Navarre Area Chamber of Commerce and can

often be seen at the YMCA in Navarre, FL volunteering with

the preschool program and as an enthusiastic soccer coach and

team mom.
