Bowthorpe Police Station Norfolk ConstabularyWendene Norwich NR5 9HAnon emergency Tel: [email protected]

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Pc 1403 TonyLester and I have filled the vacancy left by Andys departure last month. Ihave worked in the West of Norwich for over ten years and I am now solelydedicated to the Bowthorpe Community. The rest of your neighbourhoodteam remains the same with Community Support Officers Alan Bardwell andSteve Rose.

It is business as usual for the Bowthorpe Neighbourhood Policing Team atthis time of year and we have a few initiatives planned for the next fewmonths. On 15thMarch we will be holding a Police street surgery atWendene Shopping Centre. You will be able to meet and talk with usbetween 12 and 2pm. Please come along to speak with your NeighbourhoodPolicing Team and share your concerns or priorities for the community in theforthcoming year. If you cant make it please contact us to have your say on

local policing matters by dialling 101.

Crime in Bowthorpe remains low but in December we experienced severalburglaries when houses were broken in to. Some of the burglaries inDecember were opportunistic when thieves entered houses through doorsthat had been left unlocked at night. I would like to repeat Andys advice fromthe last edition of Bowthorpe News; please remember to lock your doors andwindows even if you are inside your house. And I would suggest that it isuseful to record the serial numbers and identification marks of any new andvalued items that you may have received as recent presents. UV pens arealways useful when marking your electrical items and we can offer adviceand assistance at our street surgery in March. Please contact us if you haveany information about these incidents or if you have any concerns.

Report anything suspicious to your local neighbourhood team. Nothing is tootrivial; it may fit in to a larger picture no matter how small the piece ofinformation. You can contact us through our non-emergency number of 101or through crime stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. I hope that you allenjoyed a happy new year and I look forward to meeting you in 2014.

St. Valentine's StoryMy name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century when Claudius

was the Emperor.Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. He

had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mindjoining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young

people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainlywasn't going to support that law!

I was a Christian priest (as well as a doctor). One of my favourite activities was

to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept onperforming marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. It was really quite

exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and

myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for

    the steps of soldiers.

Then I got caught and was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was

    death.

I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up

to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. She was only a

little girl, and she was blind. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. On

the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friend-ship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."

That night when the jailor went home he gave the rolled up note to hisdaughter.

She asked, What does it say father?

Just then a crocus that had been rolled up in the paper fell to the floor.

The old man read, From your Valentine.

When the little girl picked up the flower to her great surprise she could

    see!

    Feb. 10 My Story-Gloria

    Feb.24th SpeakerJulian WrightWater Aid

At last the season of turkey meals, cards and presents is over for anotheryear and I cannot believe that this piece is for the February issue of theBowthorpe News. The time seems to go so quickly!

At Ashwell Court we have had several lovely meals and excellententertainment and all our regular activities have restarted after theChristmas break. Following the retirement of Margaret, the cook and herhelper, Janet, Caroline has stepped into the gap, withthe help of a volunteer, Maggie, and they have cookedsome delicious meals for us, including our ChristmasDinner. Many thanks to Caroline and Maggie. Whatbrilliant cooks!

We were delighted to welcome back Tony Cann, who entertained at ourChristmas Dinner, and have also had a visit by Pat James and aChristmas Sing-a-long with our resident in-house entertainers, Tony andJohn.

We are looking forward to a new activity on Wednesday afternoons, when an IT class commences. Although for beginners even those ofus who use computers are hoping to find out more about modern

technology! It is with sadness we have to report the loss of two of our residents. JimBetts, who with his wife. Jean. has lived at Ashwell Court for 14 years, passed away on 23rdNovember. Our deepest sympathyto Jean. his wife of 61 years, and to his family. Despitesuffering from bad health for a long time, Jim still joined insome of our activities and his presence is missed.

We were saddened and shocked to lose another resident,Beryl Freeman, on January 13th, after a very short illness.

She will be missed for her cheerful disposition and her enjoyment of ourvarious activities. Our sympathy to her family, who help and participate

so whole-heartedly in all we do at Ashwell Court.

Goodbye for now. Best wishes to you all. Bye for now. Margaret

    Claire Halls, Bowthorpe resident

The Raptor Trust A sorry tale with a happy ending...

A couple of months ago I received an email about a Tawny Owl found on the sideof the road. The lady had not been able to find anyone to help so far but hadfound my email address and thought she would give it a go.

Our nearest committee member collected this Tawny Owl. Upon arrival theyphoned me and said 'Its going to have to come to you, it doesn't look good'.

A short while later I'm looking over the bird and said to them ...well its left sidehas definitely been hit by a car, its going to need x -ray's for sure and a check overon his eyes. His breathing isn't great either but we need to see if he can recoverfrom the shock first. I treated him overnight until he was strong enough for ananaesthetic and then got him to the vets.

He had a broken a rib, which had punctured and deflated his lung, and he hadblood clots in the front and back of his eyes. Giving him a 50:50 chance weproceeded with eye drops four times a day, painkillers, and LOTS of rest and t.l.cto say the least.

After a fortnight his lung was beginning to re-inflate and the rib was stable, buthow were the eyes 'It's nearly all gone' said the vet. 'Amazing! Another week ofeye drops to finish it all off though please.'

After all this it was time to put him in an aviary as we had to make

sure he could see well enough to hunt...we hid food, we made surewe only put it in at night so he couldn't cheat...but everyday he improved.

Now he is fully recovered...a few weeks of fitness training to get him back inshape and build all that muscle back up and then he can go back to the wild!

Its all planned for the mid-end of February once we know the weather isimproving. It will be a big event with his fan club of the locals that found him, thevet, ourselves and hopefully some press to celebrate with too. It's been a long fewmonths but all worth it.

If you would like to follow his story to his release and that of the other birds weget it, join us on facebook at Raptor Trust UK.

    MOST IMPRESSED

by Ormiston Victory Academys Les MiserablesEveryone who saw this performance seems to have been totally

WOWED by the sensaonal standard of the acng, singing,

orchestra, stage-sets and venue. More than one local resident put pen to paper

and wrote to the Evening News. The leer below was published in Dec. 2013.

I was most impressed by Ormiston Victory Academys production ofLes Miserables.

I attended the Saturday matinee with friends and had previouslyseen a production of Phantom of the Opera here so I was expecting ahigh standard of performance and was not disappointed.

I have seen Les Miserable performed both at Norwich Theatre as wellas the film. The standard of this show was that of a professionalcompany.

Teachers and pupils must have put in many hours of hard work toproduce this masterpiece which was shown in the new school theatreand accompanied by a small but very competent live orchestra. Welldone to you all, I look forward to the next show.

Bowthorpe True Stories Recounted in 2013 to our Roving Reporter

Billywas less than impressed with the area when he spent the first week of his work-ing life in appalling weather surfacing paths around Clover Hill. The experience wasfurther compounded when he was forced to spend the Friday afternoon shelteringfrom heavy rain under a tree, while his colleagues enjoyed several well-earned re-freshments in the former Four Leafed Clover public house on Humbleyard.

Mr Davis moved to Bowthorpe from Hethersett, where he had lived alone for most ofhis life in an isolated smallholding until he could no longer maintain the property. Ever

wary of strangers, it was almost a year before he finally met his next door neighbour, who eventually became Mrs Davis.

Tommy and Jean were two of the first residents of the Three Scores housingdevelopment. Jean had previously endured several years of Tommys ambitious DIYprojects at their former Norwich home, many of which remained unfinished, andcouncil officials finally reported that Tommys improvements had rendered thebuilding structurally unsound. Jean relished the prospect of moving to a brand newand fully-complete house that required no further work, rather than what she had sofar suffered and describes in her own words as living in a building site. Jeanshopes of a quiet life, however, were short-lived when Tommy first surveyed theproperty and immediately announced, Well, that walls coming down for a start!
