FROM OUR NEWLY-ELECTED COUNTYCOUNCILLOR
My family and I have been residents of Bowthorpefor eleven years now. During this time we have seen
many changes and will witness more change tocome.
Id like to express my thanks to all residents of our community for having theconfidence to vote for me in the elections held on May 2nd.
I know that politics is something that many find tedious and frustrating, but it ispolitics that brings about change in our community. We would hope that changes willbe for the better and for our benefit. This is what I along with Cllrs Jo Storie and SallyButton are working toward as we represent you in City Hall and now for my own partin County Hall also.
We represent residents as our first concern both in matters across our Community, but also at a personal level when problems arise for individuals or households. Wecannot promise to achieve the outcomes that people would like, especially againstthe backdrop of cuts to budgets and services imposed by Westminster. To makepromises would be rash, as these can so easily become broken promises. We dohowever put the best interests of residents at the forefront of our activities and worktoward achieving the best possible outcomes.
What makes me so pleased to represent people is the pride that people take in ourcommunity. I was speaking with a resident who has lived in Bowthorpe for only a few
months who told me,
I really love living here, it is peaceful, friendly and clean.
Someone else said
We have a real community, people look out for each other.
While things are not perfect our residents recognise this and Ive noticed that anumber of people have taken charge of small areas near their homes. One of ouryounger residents, who still has about eight years to go before reaching voting ageexpressed great interest in how our community operates and offered the suggestion,
Could the Council put poo bag dispensers on some lamp-posts around the place? Itwould help keep our streets so much cleaner.
With young folk being civic minded at such an age we know that we also have peopleto take on the task of Councillor in years to come.
Do contact me or Jo Storie and Sally Button if you have concerns or problems wecan assist with.
My thanks once again to all in our Community and also to outgoing County
Councillor, Paul Wells.
Kind Regards Cllr Mike Sands (City and County)

.
Last month I stated that my priority was to address the anti-social behav-iour on our streets. This will continue. My priority for the coming monthremains the same. I have ensured that our street lights in Cloverhill will
remain switched on during nights. I am also increasing police patrols par-
ticularly on foot during the evenings and nights. We have alreadyachieved results; one person was fined for supplying alcohol to juveniles
in Cloverhill; there have been several arrests for public disorder on the
streets; one person has been charged for causing criminal damage to mo-
tor vehicles on Waldegrave. I have continued working with the housingagencies who have secured injunctions on two tenants found acting in an
anti-social manner.
This month the overall recorded crime in Bowthorpe has fallen. But my
team and I have been working hard to act on the reports and information
provided by you. We have conducted search warrants at different ad-dresses and we have seized a quantity of controlled drugs. We will contin-
ue to work hard to target the supply of drugs on our streets. This is asubject that affects everyone in our community. We have charged several
people to court with the offences of cultivation of cannabis and severalmore people remain on bail while enquiries continue. Please keep the in-
formation coming. We will act on what you tell me. And all information is
kept in the strictest of confidence.
We are always keen to hear any ideas for how we can be making a posi-tive difference to the community. Should you have information please
contact us by dialling 101 or through crime stoppers anonymously on0800 555 111. On the 22nd June we will be in the Wendene
Shopping Centre between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Further dates can be
found on our Constabulary website where you can look at the latest newsin the community. Please come along and let me know what concerns or
information you have on the estate.

This month we will be celebrating Fathers Day. For some of you, fathers day is a
real celebration of joy and gratitude for a great dad. However, for some of you
fathers day brings back painful memories and is not a day you think of as a
celebration.
Some of us, due to our good experience with our earthly father, have a healthyview of what God, our heavenly father, is like. However, for many of us, if we
have had a bad experience of our father, we then can think that God is distant,
absent, or even violent. But Jesus showed us that God is a heavenly Father who is
very much alive and who loves us unconditionally, without limit. He cherishes us!
Jesus even gave us a prayer that begins `Our Father in heaven We have a God
in heaven to whom we can pray, who listens to us.
One of the pictures Jesus gave us of what God our Father is like is found in the
parable of the prodigal son. In this parable God is
portrayed as a waiting father, longing for his wayward son
to come home. And when the son does return the father
throws a great celebration. This is how God the Father feels
about us when we come back to him. God welcomes us and
celebrates because of us! Whether or not you have had a
good earthly father, on Fathers day remember that you
have a Father in heaven who loves you.
For those of you who have lost your father and for whom this fathers day will be
a sad occasion, try to do something that can celebrate the dad you had, and give
thanks to God for him.
And to the dads reading this, the best way to show your children that you love
them is to spend time with them. The best time to love them is today! Enjoy
Fathers Day!
Until next month, Rev Mark Elvin

Summer Sanctuary
Afternoon sun on my back,I amble along a grey and pittedpath - soft breezes fan hedgerows,
trees whisper with distant crowds. The sweet air of mid-summer joins meLike warmed honey and torn grass.
I swim in a sea of undulatingpasture which swells with huesof iridescent green and gold.Three fluorescent darts clip thetops - small flashes of light
above brushes of meadow.
Blazes of sapphire chasingcolonies of tiny insects, theircream-buff bellies exposed incut-throat turns - they break formationto rise high in soft curves, feeding on shoals from out of the sun.
I watch the dance climb upwards, winged performers free-fall andskim corridors of pasture, feeding on-the-wing, flittingback and forth, circling in gracefulturns - a circus of rustic acrobats.
Their rambling warbles and humsof contentment tumble down
as I stroll past nettles and docks, afternoon sun on my back andthis mid-summer memory ofBowthorpes trail stays with me.

A tribute to Ron Borrett, former city councilor for Bowthorpe, who died last month
After leaving Norwich City College in 1946 Ron went to Laurence Scott &
Electromotors as an apprentice fitter and turner, then, after doing his
national service in the RAF, he went back to London School of Economics
where he worked from 1953 until 1981, eventually becoming a senior design
draughtsman. Ron was elected to his unions National Executive where he
served as a regional member for No 21 Division, the area stretching from
the Thames to the Wash. After he was made redundant ron returned to
Norwich and went into partnership with his good friend Bippin Shah,
running the busy Mile Cross Post Office,
It is for his service to the community as a Norwich City Councillor and
eventually Lord Mayor that Ron will be best remembered, but
underpinning that was of course his membership of the Labour Party and
his lifelong adherence to its principles, which chimed so well with his very
real kindliness, generosity and desire to help others. Living in Costessey
Ron was an active member of Bowthorpe Branch, where I first met him,
and in 1995 he was elected a Bowthorpe City councillor. Certainly on
that casework aspect of public service, with his warmth, innate
helpfulness, and (it has to be said) his penchant for terrible jokes, Ron
was in his element, and worked very hard.
For Ron, though, the culmination of his public service to the city he
loved was when his fellow councillors chose him to serve as Lord Mayor
during the millennium year, a role which he fulfilled with distinction, his
beloved wife Anne at his side and acting as his speechwriter in chief.
Amongst many other events, such as the opening of the Millenium Library,
that momentous year saw work start on the 1.3 million footbridge over
the Wensum, named in honour of Norwichs twin city Novi Sad (throughout
his time on the Council and thereafter Ron was a great supporter of the
Citys twin city associations, especially. Rouen).
Ron continued as a Bowthorpe councillor until 2006, then, after Anne
passed away, he moved into the city centre. he continued actively working
for the local Labour Party, acting as Treasurer for Mancroft ward,
while also helping with the local credit union.
Ron remained ever a credit to our city and to the Party that he loved;
he will be sadly missed by us, his comrades, and by all who knew him: may
he rest in peace.

ASHWELL COURT
Hello Everyone
Although the weather has marginally improved, it still feels very cold outsideand despite a few days of sunshine, spring does not seem to have sprung! However, here at Ashwell Court we have warmth and entertainment to passthe time in comfort until summer arrives.
Last month (May) we enjoyed a visit from the Dennis Light Orchestra. It wasa very enjoyable evening of lovely and familiar melodies, beautifully playedby this orchestra, who perform purely for charity (and for the love of music).
Unfortunately the scheduled entertainment by the Simon Miller Sound had tobe cancelled because of illness. We send our best wishes for a speedyrecovery. Although disappointing we nevertheless spent an enjoyableevening playing prize money Hoy, accompanied by a Fish and Chip supper.
Also in May a few of us joined our friends from Bradecroft for a some veryenjoyable trips, one a lovely Mystery Tour and another to Bury St Edmunds.
In the future we are looking forward at the beginning of June to a Strawberry
Tea, an afternoon entertainment by Dick High and an evening of music withTony Cann.
We are happy to extend a very warm welcome to our new residents, HazelTowers and Jackie Alderton. We hope they are settlingwell and wish them every happiness in their new homes.
Best wishes from all at Ashwell Court.

What lives within a mouse burrow, other
than a mouse?Spring has brought with it much activity in the
natural world, and has kept me busy in the
field surveying
it all.
Over the past few months you may have noticed a lot
of bumblebees flying around, and some of which
buzzing low to the ground, flying from one small niche
to the next. These were no doubt queens looking for a
nesting site to set up for the year. If a suitable nest
site is found, this may be an old mouse burrow.
Once they have found a suitable nest site, the queen will lay a few eggs, and thengather pollen from plants to feed them up. However, once the bee larvae have grown
up and become smaller versions of the queen, they will then become the gatherers of
pollen, and will continue to feed the new larvae. The queen will mostly stay within the
nest from now on and her role, an egg laying machine!
An interesting point is that the queen would have mated in autumn, and will not need
to re-mate at all for the rest of the year. She in fact gets no help from the male, and
furthermore, that male she would have mated with will now be dead, as the male
body during copulation will effectively fall apart after the act. Well in most cases shewould have likely mated with numerous other males. By the way all the workers in the
bee nest, and this is true of all social bees and wasps will all be females! Males are
kicked out of the nest and left to fend for themselves!
What to look for Look out for bumblebees on warm days
Dont touch, but get close and look at the colour of their tail.
We have 23 species of bumblebee and you can distinguish most of them by a
combination of the colour of the tail and then the strips on the rest of their body, including the colour of their clypeus (a kind of nose). Check out the
BumblebeeConservationTrust website which has some good ID guides.
While the bumblebees have been emerging from under old logs and such like (even
them little mouse burrows again), so have the reptiles! Over at Bowthorpe on the
marsh and the higher fields near Three Score the grass snakes have been taking
advantage of the sunny spells and increasingly warmer days we have had. While we
dont have adders in Bowthorpe, I did see one basking in the sun when it was only 4
degrees, although this was in March, when there was little warmth to be had.
Youre unlikely to find any snakes out basking in such cold conditions now,

especially when they are spoiled with
warmer days now that the season has
warmed up. Even the grass snakes
would have been out in relatively cooler
days, which is vital at the start of the
season to try and get into condition for
the rest of the season. Its a demanding
life for the male, who will need to get
into condition for combat with other
males to get the right to mate with the
female. The females then also have the
stresses of child birth!
What to look for:
Look around
bramble patches and
rough grass margins
South facing
sides are best as they get
the most sunlight
Sunny
intervals around15 degrees is
ideal for basking
grass snakes
So what lives within a
mouse burrow, well a lot of
different things it seems!
Bees, reptiles and while
not discussed frogs andnewts also are found to
hibernate in them, and of
course mice!

If you have a child /children under five years old, there are opportunities arising for you to sharesome enjoyable musical experiences with them,as well as meeting up with other parents and
child-minders in the area.
Ingrid has enjoyed running music groups in and around Norwich forfamilies with little ones since the eighties, and has been a visiting musiclady at Earlham Early Years Centre with the nursery children since 2000.She then qualified in music therapy in 2008 and returned to work at theCentre as a music therapist shortly afterwards. Music & Special NeedsNorfolk, a charity supporting music therapy, have been very kindly workingtogether with Ingrid to raise funds for music therapy to continue there,
following severe budget cuts. Ingrid now wants to expand her services inNR5, offering more music making to families with young children in andaround the community. She is doing this under the umbrella of FutureProjects, who are generously hosting her individual music therapy
sessions in their studio on Wednesday mornings.
Ingrid is now bringing informal music-making to Stay and Play, providedby Earlham Early Years Centre andhosted by Henderson Green
Community Primary School onFriday mornings 9.30 to 11.00am.
Arriving with her flute, guitar andsome instruments to share, she setsup a music corner and plays withchildren and parents. At the end ofeach session, she plays guitar with
everyone for a singing session.
