NPS Archaeology The features uncovered recently on Three Score Fields are still being worked on., and an archive report should be completed by the summer. The finds tell us a bit more about the settlements which have previously existed in the area in both prehistoric and Saxon times. They will be archived and stored by the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service. It is hoped that a summary of the work will be available for the July issue of this magazine.

The Wellbeing Service is a partnership between Norfolk &

Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and Mind. We provide psychological therapies for mild to moderately severe anxiety and

depression. Clients can self refer, or can be referred by their GP or other health professional if preferred. Initial interventions teach CBT self help techniques. When we become low or anxious our thinking and our behaviour changes, and these changes can maintain the way we are feeling, therefore CBT helps people to understand their patterns so that

they can make the necessary changes in order to feel better.

Taster Sessions are one-off workshops lasting two hours, which offer psycho-education on learning to manage stress, low mood and anxiety, and information about further help that the service can offer. The dates of our Taster Sessions are on our website www.readytochange.org.uk. We recommend this as the first step when coming into the service. Clients

can self refer at these sessions, they do not have to pre-book places.

We also offer * Stress Control Workshops * Low mood or anxiety workshops * Guided self help * Face to face therapy * Wellbeing in the Workplace

We see people from age 16 with no upper age limit. We have teams that specialise in working with older people and younger people.

The Wellbeing Service is not intended for clients that are suitable for, or active to, the mental health teams, as these teams have their own provision for psychological

therapy.

Bowthorpe Police Station Norfolk Constabulary Wendene Norwich NR5 9HA non emergency Tel: 101 [email protected]

With the arrival of summer, Norfolk Constabulary will be launching a summer drink drive campaign, targeting those

individuals who chose to drive their cars under the influence of drink or drugs. Sadly, despite repeated messages, drink related road deaths are nationally, still far too high. With the warmer weather and the increase in parties, barbecues and the like, more people will be out and about enjoying a drink or two. For some, the temptation may be to enjoy a drink and take the risk of driving their car. My message is simple, please consider whilst having fun with friends and family, don’t put them at risk, don’t drink and drive. Driving a vehicle under the influence of drink or drugs will seriously impair the drivers ability and can have severe consequences. The driver will potentially risk not just their own lives but others. Any driver convicted of a drink drive offence will receive a minimum 12 month driving ban, a criminal record and can receive a fine

of up to £5000.

Should you suspect any individual of drink driving, please contact Norfolk Constabulary anytime by telephoning 101. In case of an emergency,

always telephone 999.

From the Bowthorpe Safer Neighbourhood team, we wish all of you a safe

and enjoyable summer.

Disappointment it was the British author Nick Nornby who once wrote, `The natural state of the football fan is bitter disappointment, no matter what the score.’ I expect that many Norwich City fans are still licking their wounds after the disappointment of relegation. At least Norwich will be able to play Ipswich Town next season! Many good and true fans will know that feeling of utter disappointment. Now, with the World Cup upon us this month, millions of England fans up and down the land will probably suffer the same sinking sense of disappointment.

Yet whether we are football fans or not, all of us know what it is like to experience disappointment; we lose our health, our loved ones move away, we don’t pass the exam we needed for the career we wanted, we are turned down for the job that we desperately needed... Whatever it may be, we are all disappointed at some point in our lives.

Like us, Jesus had his disappointments. He suffered the betrayal of a close friend, the denial of his right-hand man and the desertion of his trusted apostles and then went to the cross. The Bible says that `for the joy set before him he [Jesus] endured the cross, scorning its shame.’ He experienced the pain of betrayal, denial and desertion and then endured the cross because he could see the resurrection ahead. He had hope in the power of God to raise him from the dead.

Disappointment is inextricably linked to expectations and hope. If I don’t expect England to win the World Cup, I won’t be as disappointed when they don’t. But I am ever hopeful. Who wants to live without expectations, without hope? Disappointment can be a valuable emotion because it shows us what really matters to us. Football is not a matter of life or death. We can have something

more valuable and more lasting, a faith that has turned disappointment into hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Until next month, Revd Mark Elvin

The time to write the next piece for the Bowthorpe News comes round so quickly, which just goes to show how busy and active we are at Ashwell

Court!

We have been enjoying our usual activities, with lovely lunches on Tuesday and Thursday, cooked by our chef. Richard. We are very lucky to have such delicious lunches on our own premises and are pleased that we are joined

by residents of other sheltered housing in Bowthorpe.

Once again we have been having our monthly entertainment evenings. The latest was the welcome return of Pat James, who as always gives us a lovely programme of songs for listening, joining in and, of course, dancing. These evenings are always enjoyable and enhanced by being accompanied

by a delicious buffet.

We are still enjoying our twice-weekly exercise sessions. Although the exercises are done sitting down they certainly stretch our muscles and give us a good work-out and a

healthy appetite for lunches.

Some of us accompanied Bradecroft on their recent outing to Bury St Edmunds. This is such a lovely town and the market is great, so

a good time was had by all!

Hopefully by the time you read this we shall be experiencing some really

good summer weather. Meanwhile, best wishes to all.

ASHWELL COURT

BRADECROFT

Hello again. just to say we ended April with a film night. It was enjoyed by those who attended, but it went on a bit too long, so the next time we will have a shorter time. I did not go as it is not my thing. I was never one for the

pictures.

Now we have just been to BURY ST

EDMONDS. Very nice drive, weather was good, everyone from Bradecroft enjoyed it, but being so many hills, makes you very tired and weary. and

none of us are getting any younger.

Notices from

neighbours

Well, to end this month we are having a bingo evening, so we look forward to that. The weather man tells us we are going to have a nice warm weekend, so we can relax a while. Now I got told the other day that I don’t put enough humour into these letters, so I decided I would ask my dog TOOTSIE what she thought. She sat up, put her foot up (please) then turned round and went to sleep, so I

think she was telling me to go but bring her something back.

Well that’s all for now till we meet again , enjoy the

weather. and all the flowers.

£6.00 at the door.

Tuesday June 24th – Ben Scott-Hyde Ben has been

playing electronic organ since he was inspired by his grandmother playing her Wersi organ when he was only 5 years old. He has since made a name for him-self on the organ circuit as an outstanding organist with a hilarious sense of humour and this will be his 2nd visit to our club. Touring with the superb Wersi Scala, he has a varied programme with defi-nite influence drawn from names such as Franz Lam-bert, Klaus Wunderlich and James Last.

Do come and join us for an evening of good musical en-tertainment with like-minded, friendly people, you will be

very welcome.

Friends of West Earlham

Woods are planning a litter pick

on Saturday June 7th in Bunkers Hill Wood. We will meet

on Earlham Green Lane by the cottages, just the

other side of the bus-lane at 10.00am and aim to

finish by 12.00. All equipment is provided and

everyone is welcome. Stout shoes are a good

idea and we will cancel if the weather is too

bad. Get more information by telephoning

01603 464650.

If you can't make this one, we will be clearing

the woods of rubbish on other dates as well:

August 2nd, October 4th, December 6th. People walk their dogs in the woods, children

play there, wild animals live there and plants

grow there. Some of us adults go there even

without any doggy excuse! So the woods are a

shared resource but they can be abused. If you

spot any fly-tipping in the woods (or elsewhere

in Bowthorpe) you can notify the City Council

online at www.norwich.gov.uk. Click on the

“tell us about it” on the home page and then

click on the “fly-tipping” icon. There is a form

you can fill in to report the fly-tipping and I am

assured the council is very good at dealing with

it.

Bye all.. PAT

For the first, of what will hopefully be regular updates on what’s happening at West Norwich Troop of Norfolk Army Cadet Force (ACF) I thought I would introduce you to what the organisation is all about.

The ACF is a national organisation with over 47,000 young people and 8,500 volunteer adults working together in one of the most successful and exciting youth organisations in the country!

Although sponsored by the Army, the ACF is not part of the Regular Army or the TA and its members as such are not liable for any form of military service. We are however closely linked to our sponsors and the ACF is organised along military lines - using their uniforms, rank structure and mirroring their Values and Standards. Cadets are in no way expected to show a particular interest in joining the services but if they do, they will be helped to find

out more. Our aim is to inspire young people to achieve success in life with a spirit of service to the Queen, their country and their local community, and to develop in them the qualities of good citizens. We do this by providing a variety of educational, challenging and adventurous opportunities. Cadets sleep outside, get wet and muddy and often arrive home tired and dirty - but in doing so they learn new skills, improve their fitness and gain the self-confidence and self-respect to present themselves and their achievements to the outside world.

Cadets are taught everything from basic survival skills to leadership training, using the national cadet star system which provides a military-based syllabus combined with a full range of activities such as shooting, adventure training, community work, annual camp, sports and the opportunity to achieve nationally recognized first aid and BTEC qualifications. The ACF are also major participants in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Most of all the Army Cadet Force is about fun and friendship for 12 - 18 year olds in a demanding and exciting, but carefully controlled environment. So if that sounds like the sort of thing you want to get involved with and want to find out more then come along with a parent or guardian to the Clover Hill Community Hall on a Wednesday evening at 7.30pm, call 01362 694515 or check out armycadets.com/norfolkacf for more information.

Norfolk’s Wildlife Needs You!

NBIS, Norfolk Biodiversity Information Service, are determined to understand and help Norfolk’s wildlife.

With wildlife under threat across the world, it is vital that we understand what we have, which species are declining and what the cause is behind these declines. To answer all of these questions, NBIS needs species data!

Currently, NBIS holds over 2.5 million species records covering the whole of Norfolk but the majority of these are ad hoc records and cannot be used to measure species trends.

To rectify this, NBIS is hoping to establish a Norfolk Species Surveillance Network.

The Norfolk Species Surveillance Network (NSSN) aims to create a network of keen volunteers who each adopt an important wildlife site, or a site of their choice, and monitor this throughout the year for a variety of different taxa. Once combined, the data obtained from the NSSN will allow NBIS to build a picture of wildlife in Norfolk, and more importantly, analyse this data for long term changes.

To get involved, you don’t need any previous experience. NBIS are offering a series of training workshops to boost your wildlife ID skills and build your confidence when recording. You will be supplied with any equipment you need and will have the ongoing support of the NBIS team.

For more information, and to sign up, visit www.nbis.org.uk/

SpeciesSurveillanceNetwork or email [email protected]

Y4 & 5 Residential at Eaton Vale

Children from year four and five recently took part in a one

night residential stay at Eaton Vale activity centre. The

children thoroughly enjoyed their time doing ar-

chery, raft building, rock climbing and working as

a team, developing their communication skills. It

was so fun, nobody even minded that it rained!

They’re growing fast!

The three chicks, which were

hatched in school before Easter,

returned for a week long visit

recently. The children were

amazed to see how quickly they

had grown! We are presently

preparing their coop, for their

return in June. It will be incredibly

exciting for the

children, who will

get to care and look

after their wellbeing.

A word from Eco-Council

Year five have been

making space stations out

of old bottles, yogurt pots,

cereal boxes and much

more! Thank you to the

community for sending all

these materials in. It has

been great to reuse them

and turn them into

something wonderful!

Extraordinary Efforts All the staff members at St Michaels

would like to say a huge well done to all the year sixes. They have

just sat their end of KS2 SATs and worked so hard to achieve their

very best. The work will not stop there, however, as they will begin

to study Macbeth and perform the play to the school and parents.
