We all pray that our children are born healthy, but this not always the case. Sam was born with Cystic Fibrosis. His family was not aware of this right away, they only knew that he had a life threatening bowel obstruction that required immediate life saving surgery. After two and a half month stay in the hos- pital, Sam was able to come home for the first time. There were many other medical chal- lenges ahead of Sam and his family, but they realized early on that Sam was a special boy. Sam is a gentle spirit with an amazing sense of humor. Growing up playing in the backyard with dad it was ob- vious that Sam had an amaz- ing talent with his hand-eye coordination. The little lefty could hit the baseball and golf ball with the skill and ease rarely seen from someone his age. His dad was an athlete, who played professional base- ball and is a scratch golfer. His mom excelled as a tennis player so apparently he had good genes to start with. Sam was introduced to bowling at the young age of five. He en- joyed it so much that he would ask for bowling parties for his birthdays. Over the years, he has de- veloped many special friend- ships at Forest Lanes. The wonderful staff at Forest Lanes has adopted him as their own and many of the regular bowlers have taken him under their wings and given him tre- mendous support. Sam is also a wonderful baseball player. Last year he was the only 9 year old to make the all-star team that included 10 and 11 year olds. Although he ex- celled at baseball, he wanted to take the year off and con- centrate on bowling. You can imagine how “excited” his dad was with that decision, never- theless, he gave him his sup- port. Sam would bowl seven days a week if given the chance and sometimes does. He has progressed from bowling his first 200 game at the age of 8 to now, over 100 games of 200 or better at the age of 10. We all knew that it was a matter of time before it happened, but no one expected it to come so soon, you see, Sam bowled a perfect 300 game on July 6th of this year. Fearless, with poise and determination he lined up that last ball and let it go right down the left side and hooked perfectly into the pocket knocking down all ten pins. Perfect game for a per- fect young man. I think the staff and friends were more excited for him than he was, you see, Sam has a very mag- netic personality. He is a true gentleman who cares about others. This year Sam in entering the fifth grade at Lomarena El- ementary School and accord- ing to mom, he will continue to maintain getting “A”s and “B”s if he want to continue bowling. Everyone has their own motivations, right? Sam has not let having Cystic Fibrosis get in the way of doing the things he loves. He knows that it will be some- thing he will always have to deal with, but he has the focus and determination that should inspire others to do their best regardless of their own strug- gles. He is an inspiration to us all. Samʼs favorite ques- tion, “Do you think we can go bowling today? He is a tough one to say no to. Nancy Arvanitis was inducted for Meritorious Service but hav- ing been exposed to bowling at a young age and tutored by her mother she has also made her mark as a bowler. She became a WIBC mem- ber at the age of eleven and later on while living on Long island in New York she had the thrill of having the famous Andy Veripapa offer to give her some pointers. She said it really helped her game. Nan- cy’s higher education came from the State University of New York where she received a degree in Education and Mathematics in 1967. She married and continued teaching for several years un- til her son’s Christopher and Matthew were born – just a California USBC Inducts Three to Their Hall by Mary Lynly year apart – and she decided she would be a stay at home mom. Nancy was diligent about not missing her league night and, in fact, she bowled Friday night and Matthew was born on Sunday and she bowled the next Friday! In 1976 the family moved to California and settled in Vista. In short order she went to the local bowling center and signed up for a league – The George Murphy scratch/match play league where she became a good friend of National Hall of Famer Olga Gloor. The stage was set when Phyllis Bourque invited her to attend a meeting for youth bowlers. Since both of her boys bowled she was interest- ed but didn’t count on becom- ing the new Youth Association Secretary! She helped spear- head hosting the 1992 State Youth Championships. She became active in the Avocado WBA and although she had a passion for bowling game she chose not to follow a Semi-Pro Bowling career and get into the administrative end of things. She cherishes the memo- ries of traveling the country with her fellow bowlers – 30 State Tournaments and 25 Na- tionals. She served as Secre- tary of the Youth Association for many years and also with the California USBC. She says working the tour- naments and giving up week- ends took a lot of time but she wouldn’t change anything about her association with the sport she loves. The last word was, “Now that I am retired I am going to get back to writ- ing!” Karen Smith was the in- ductee for Superior Perfor- mance. This gracious lady hailed from Godfrey, Illinois. As she grew up it was appar- ent that she was going to be a “Lefty” to her father’s dismay since he thought left handed people were at a disadvantage. This so disturbed him he even tried tying her arm behind her back to get her to change hands – to no avail. John sowell Continues

scoringby Frank Weiler

MURRIETA — John Sow-ell continues to score big on Thursday night in CAL OAKS scratch 430 Doubles League. Regularly posting scores of 250 or better are this confident portsider’s M.O. He is a threat to roll a 300 every game.

John has already bowled one perfecto during this sum-mer leagues first four weeks. It was his twentieth certified perfect game and resulted in a great 771 three game set.

The best part of John’s game is his confidence. He is the most confident bowler I’ve teamed with over the past 50 years! Why? Be-cause he is a winner. Winning breeds confidence. In the last couple of years John has won five WCST titles and several scratch league championships.

Confidence is also the child of a strong mental game, and John has superior mental abili-ties. Of course overconfidence can be the doom of any bowler who lacks self control. Over-confidence breeds compla-cency, which leads to mental mistakes. Mental mistakes mean lower scores and losing. A good bowler, like John, is diligent and avoids overconfi-dence, complacency, and men-tal mistakes.

Also, John is quite a com-petitor. He reminds me of a shark ready to strike, a dog ready to bite, a cat ready to pounce, a trap ready to spring.

Watch out fellow competi-tors, John is waiting for YOU.

I am sure we will be hear-ing much more from John this summer. Stay tuned. Thank you BOWLING NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt bowl-ers.

Ten Pin Bluesby Sheila Westbrook

I pensively wandered up to the laneHoping to improve my throw againAlas, my ball went to the gutterEveryone could hear me shudder!

For once again the pins did beat meBut I resolved they’ll not defeat meIt’s only a game, some people sayAnd I can’t let this ruin my day!

So over and over I attempt to winOnly to be shot down again and againBy one, two, or three pins standingCan someone help me, I’m demanding?

For sanity holds a very fine lineAnd I am walking close to mineI need a few little changes to makeLike approach, release, and accuracy for goodness sake!

Finally, things have come togetherMy score is getting so much betterIf I could but keep up this progressI could leave here with happiness.

So, by coming back twice weeklyI might not have to leave so meeklyMy dream someday is to show themThat I’ve learned to really throw them!!!

willed and stubborn, Karen was determined to prove him wrong. She competed in base-ball, softball, football, golf, horseshoes, shooting, badmin-ton, shuffleboard, table tennis and bowling! She loved to compete. In 1959 her family moved to Hollywood and later into the San Fernando Valley. She attended Chatsworth High and Cal State Northridge. Her parents bowled in leagues and while she was attending col-lege her dad taught her to bowl. She says she took a bowling class but she liked badminton and fencing more. After col-lege she married and was busy raising two daughters which left little time for sports. The family eventually moved to the San Diego area and one weekend she was watching a Karen Smithmen’s bowling tournament and she thought to herself, “I can beat those guys!” The guys weren’t bowling all that well and it served as motivation for Karen to start practicing. Her dad had taught her that, “Competition is fun and winning is even more fun.” Her stats include 2-800 series’; 6-300 games; High league average of 222 in 1999-2000 in the San Diego North County Associa-tion; Bowler of the Year in 1980-81 and 1981-82; Member of CWBA Team Champions 1993; CWBA Senior Women’s Singles Champ -2006. She was the winner of the Super Senior Tour, the only woman entered! Karen has had numerous top three/five/ and fifteen finishes over the years in challenging competition. Of note, Karen’s husband rolled a 300 in the second game of the night and Karen matched it with her own 300 in the third game which included a 15-minute lane breakdown in the 10th frame! Karen Smith, a woman with tremendous competitive drive and a humble spirit.

Carol Jean Mancini was inducted for Meritorious Ser-vice. A familiar figure to any-one involved in bowling in So. Calif, Carol Mancini was born in the one stoplight town of Chanute, Kansas. In 1951 a six-lane bowling center was built in Chanute. Carol was a senior in high school but she also worked making airplane parts from 3 P.M. to Midnight. It so happened, the bowling center was across the street from her work and she would Carol Mancini

bowl a game on her break. After graduation she concentrated on saving her money and finally bought a one-way ticket to Cali-fornia. It was here she met and married Harold Woodruff and they were blessed with three children in the first seven years they were married – Bette, Wendy and Brian. In 1957 Harold’s work took him to Sasebo, Japan for two years. The naval base had two bowling centers (with pin boys.) While she was there she organized three day leagues for the ladies, taught the Girl Scout Troop to bowl (and get a badge) and she even bowled in a Navy Travel League. When they returned to the states they lived in Newport, Rhode Island and had only candle pin and duck pin leagues. In 1963 they moved back to California and real bowling centers! This was the era of the door to door promotion, WIG leagues, and bowling lessons. Over 3,500 women took lessons and at least 3,000 got wigs at Parkway Bowl in El Cajon. In 1970 she married Nick Mancini who was a legend himself in promot-ing tournaments. In 1973 Nick took over Grand Central Bowl in Glendale and Carol took the helm at Alhambra Valley Bowl in Alhambra. At her first association meeting she was elected a delegate to the WIBC convention in Miami, Florida. She was hooked and attended 26 more as well as 30 plus state conven-tions. In 1988 Carol was elected president of the San Gabriel Valley WBA and she led the quest of hosting the State Tourna-ment in 1989. After doing special projects for various bowling centers Carol went to work for Del Rio Lanes. In 1989 the Bowl-ing News Newspaper came up for sale and together with Del Rio Lanes owner Charlie Kinstler they purchased the 73-year old paper and it remains one of two operating in California. It’s a labor of love and she continues as office Manager of Del Rio Lanes in Downey as well, a position she says she enjoys. Her honors include San Diego Bowler of the Year in 1969; The 1977 CWBA Doubles champion; recipient of the Joyce Deitch Trail-blazer award; CWBA Distinguished Service Award; San Gabriel Valley WBA Hall of Fame and Southern California Bowling Writers Hall of Fame. She is an accomplished bowling writer and member of the Bowling Writers Association of America and the California Bowling Writers. She loves keeping up with local, state and national news and loves talking to bowlers about “the good old days”. She greets all with her infectious smile.

GALLO QUALIFIED & CASHED IN PBA SOUTH REGION CHAMELEON OPENGASTONIA, NC—Upon his return home in Jacksonville, FL from the west coast, long time

deaf PBA member Frank Gallo, Jr. made plans to enter in PBA South Region Gastonia, NC Chame-leon Open presented by Columbia 300 at George Pappas’s Liberty Lanes July 6-8.There were 80 entries in this Chameleon Open event which uses PBA Chameleon 39 feet long oil pattern.

In this tournament on Saturday Gallo shot 1717 for 8 games (214.6 ave,) and qualified in 12th place in the top 16 bowlers cut-off for Sunday’s best 3 of 5 games match play. Lee Vanderhoef, Greenville, SC rolled a 300 in his top qualifier 18 96 total (236.2 ave,). Host venue owner Pappas placed 2nd with 1818. Exempt PBA bowler Tommy Jones, SC placed 3rd with 1800 and also other exempt bowler Rhino Page, FL placed 10th with 1728. Wayne Bolin, NC took the last (16th) quali-fying lace with 1702. Gallo, Pappas and Bolin were the only seniors qualified in this event.

Unfortunately on Sunday morning in best 3 of 5 match play Gallo struggled in his match against the 5th qualifier Scott Newell, FL and lost all his 3 games to Newell. Gallo was eliminated and placed 16th with 2213 total for 11 games cashing for $525.00. The results showed Newell, after eliminating Gallo, moved to round of 8 in best 2 of 3 match play eliminated #4 qualifier Victor Florie, Jr. VA 2 games to 1. Florie, Jr. placed in 5th for $750 and Newell moved on to round of 4 against #1 qualifier Vanderhoef who also won his two matches. Newell eliminated Vanderhoef in two games and moved on to best 2 of 3 games championship finals against #10 qualifier Page who won all his 7 games. In the title match Page won easily with 300-269 to Newell’s 212-201. Page got the title and $2,500, Newell $1,300 for 2nd and Vanderhoef $1000 for 3rd.,

What’s next for Frank Gallo? We do not know but will check other PBA tournaments in his area to see if his name is entered.

Mike Cammarata is all smiles and he receives his 800 ring from USBC Rep Eugene McCown (right). Mike shot 811 during the 950 Baker sweeps at Del Rio Lanes on May 14, 2012.

The Perfect Gameby Steve Felege (inspired by the brilliant Carol Mancini)

Carol: Welcome back readers. This week I have a special treat for you. Last week, a young man who called himself Jimbojet7for7 asked the coach why we bowl. That made me think, “Why do people bowl?” So this week I’m sending Steve out to ask you that exact question. Go get ‘em, coach.Steve: Great idea, Carol. Where should I start?Carol: Here’s the deal. Just outside that door is a ladies league. Some of them have been around this game for quite a while and you can bet they’ve got some real stories to tell. See if you can’t get a couple of good ones.Steve: Got it. See you in a bit.Dean: Did you just send him out into that snake pit to talk to those vipers?Carol: Yeah, this ought to be fun to watch. Those gals hate men so much it’s a wonder they don’t call it The Thursday Morning Male-Haters League. Dean: Why did you do that? Poor guy, I’m gonna miss him.Carol: We have that office pool....Remember?Dean: Oh yeah!Steve: Excuse me, miss...Bowler #1: Git lost, Bozo! Cain’t ya see ahm bizzy?Steve: Sorry miss. I didn’t mean to, uh, you really don’t need that pepper spray, miss....I’ll...just...leave... now. Bowler #1: Dang raght you weell!Dean: Did you see that, Carol?!Carol: Did I ever! I just love little Amy, she has spunk! Hey Lillian! Come on over and watch this!Steve: Whoa! I sure didn’t expect that! Maybe I’ll try that lady over there. She looks a little more friendly. Excuse me miss, I’m working on an article for The Bowling News. Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about....Bowler #2: Are you hitting on me?!!!Steve: No, not at all. I was just wondering if....Bowler #2: Yeah, you were just wondering if you could hit on me!!! Well, unless you have a million dollars in your pocket and drive a Ferrari, I’ll be doing the only hitting around here!!! I swear, you men are all alike! Hey, Amy! Throw me that pepper spray!Dean: This is great! Carol, you... are... a...genius!Carol: This is going to be one our best columns ever. Make sure you get all of it!Dean: No problem.....Lillian: Why do you keep doing this to Steve? He’s a nice man.Carol: Office pool! Remember?Lillian: Oh, that’s right.Dean: Look! He’s going over to interview Bertha.Carol: Uh-oh! Lillian, be ready to call the paramedics.Lillian: Again?Steve: Oh, man. What have I gotten myself into?Bertha: Hiya handsome. What seems to be the problem?Steve: Uh, hello......miss....?Bertha: My name’s Bertha, and you look like you were just handed a death sentence.Steve: I think I was. I’m with The Bowling News and I’m supposed to interview somebody, but so far, everybody I talk to wants to kill me.Bertha: Ask away, honey.Steve: Everybody has a story to tell and I want to hear yours. Why do you bowl?Bertha: To pick up guys. Dean: That’s a fact. She picked me up once.Lillian: Really?Dean : Oh yeah! Threw me halfway down the lane.... oh, look! She’s got Steve by the scruff of the neck! She picks him up by the seat of his pants! She uses the classic two handed shovel-pass, and...... he’s off-kicking and screaming! Sorry folks, it’s a disappointing performance for our dear Bertha tonight! She was barely able to slide Steve past the arrows. But wait, this match isn’t over yet! Steve struggles to his feet. He’s up! Dripping with oil he turns to face Big Bertha. You can see the determination in his eyes. There’s still a lot of fight left in this old coach! But wait! Profes-sional wrestler, “Mayhem” Marcy steps in front of him, she spins him around and applies her world famous hammer- lock hold! She may be new to bowling, but she brings the competitive spirit to a whole new level!Carol: I think Marcy has just invented a new format! We could call it, “Tag-Team Coach Bowl-ing”.Dean: Carol, you’re grinning again......Bertha: Hey Marcy, don’t be too hard on him! Do you know who that is?Marcy: Don’t know! Don’t care!Bertha: That’s the guy who writes that new column for The Bowling News!Marcy: You’re kidding! This guy’s Carol Mancini?!Comments or questions? Email them to us at: [email protected].

Road to 15th Teen Masters Grand Championships

Freeway Lanes hosts qualifying, match play rounds in High School Boys and Girls, Under-14 Divisions WICKLIFFE, OH – The road to New York City’s Grand

Central Terminal and the Grand Championships in the 15th an-nual Teen Masters gets underway at Freeway Lanes in suburban Cleveland.

After qualifying and match play rounds that continue through Thursday, the top four boys and top four girls in the High School Boys and Girls divisions will advance to the unique champion-ship rounds on a specially-installed lane in Vanderbilt Hall inside New York’s busy transit hub Aug. 5-8.

Boys and girls in Under-14 divisions also will compete at Freeway Lanes. The Professional Bowlers Association will pro-vide live scoring on pba.com for the Teen Masters qualifying rounds in all four divisions through Wednesday.

The Teen Masters, originated by Killer “B” Promotions founder Gary Beck, is a unique youth tournament, testing player skills on a combination of long- and short-oiled lane conditions as well as bowling equipment limitations which require play-ers to make adjustments in their techniques rather than relying on ball technology. Each competitor will be allowed to use two bowling balls – an Ebonite Pursuit (or Pursuit S) and an Ebonite Cyclone. More than 170 youth bowlers will compete for more than $100,000 in scholarship money.

Qualifying begins with six games on a 42-foot oiling pat-tern for all players. High school boys will bowl at 9 a.m. with high school girls and both under-14 groups bowling at 2 p.m. (all times are Eastern). All groups return at the same times Tuesday for another six games on a shorter 35-foot pattern. All qualifying scores will be posted as they happen on pba.com under its Live Scoring tab. After 12 games, the top one-third of the high school boys’ field, top 16 high school girls, top five U14 boys and top four U14 girls will move on.

Wednesday’s challenge for the survivors will be a final six-game “mixed pattern” round at 9 a.m., where one lane will use the long-oil pattern and the other lane will use the short-oil pattern. Eight-game round-robin match play rounds in both high school divisions will follow at 7 p.m. Wednesday and 2 p.m. Thursday. Total pinfall after 34 games will determine the four high school boys and four girls who will bowl in New York City

The U14 Boys and Girls Championships will be held Thurs-day at 1 p.m.

PBA.com’s Xtra Frame, a subscription-based on-line video streaming service, is providing live coverage of the final three days of match play eliminations from Grand Central Terminal Aug. 6-8. To enroll as an Xtra Frame subscriber, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame logo.
