BOOK REVIEWS The Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Poisoning. By J. D. P. GRAHAM. Oxford University Press. £2 5s. 0d. net. Do you take sleeping pills ? 600 million doses were taken in Britain last year (and 3,500 tons of aspirin manufactured as well). Over 5,000 persons died of poisoning in the U.K. in 1957 and 75% of these were " non-accidental ". Carbon monoxide and barbit- urate together account for the bulk of suicides at the rate of four to one. In the accidental group the aged and children under five seem to be at special risk--for obvious reasons. These are a few of the fascinating facts clearly presented in the first thirty pages of this valuable handbook. The remaining four hundred pages deal in detail with the diagnosis and treatment of the common--and in truth many rare--poisons including drugs, industrial chemicals, and the metals. The presentation of the material is complete and concise and is freely illustrated by reports of the author's own cases. Modestly aiming to satisfy the needs of general practitioners and resident medical staffs, I)r. Graham has done this most effectively. He has at the same time produced a most readable and authoritative book. I)AVID MITCHELL. Neurophysiology. By T. C. RUCH, H. D. PATTOn, J. W. WOODBUnY, A. L. TOWE. Saundere. 70/-. This account of neurophysiology comprises the chapters on the nervous system of Medical Physiology and Biophysics now published as a separate volume. Portability is gained at a price for naturally this book is proportionately dearer. The authors' aim is to treat the subject "as a continuum stretching from the physics of the neuron to the physiological interpretation of signs and symptoms of neurologmal disease " and they have assimilated the results of many research workers into their up-to-date pages. A particularly interesting section deals with Emotion and Motivation, aspects of physiology which can be commended for study at the present time when powerful drugs are being used more and more by those knowing less and less of current theories of the neural basis of Emotion. J. B. LYONS. Microbiology. Carpenter. (N.B.) $6.75 (47s. 0d.). American textbooks of microbiology differ so completely in outlook from those recommended to medical students on this side of the Atlantic that no valid comparison is possible. Nevertheless, one often feels that it would be a distinct advantage if our students would read through a book such as this, dealing as it does with the general principles of microbiology and particularly with the metabolism of micro-organisms-- subjects for which there is little time in the medical curriculum. This particular work is an excellent one, well written, well illustrated and well-balanced and can be heartily recommended to those seeking an introduction to General Microbiology. P. iNT. Meenan. Photometric Titrations. By J. B. HEADRIDGE. Pergamon Press, 1961. 45s. Photometric titrations, i.e., titratious in which a photo-electric instrument is used to detect a visually difficult end-point, were first described in 1928. The technique has now been applied to the analysis of many substances and some hundreds of papers on the subject published in the past decade are reviewed in this monograph. The procedures described will be of interest to research workers in various fields, but have little application in the clinical laboratory, although the mlcro-complexometric pro- cedures for determination of calcium and magnesium on 0.1 ml. volumes of serum may commend themselves, particularly to those concerned with carrying out analytical procedures on blood from young children. I). HINGERTY. Fearon's Introduction to Biochemistry (4th Ed.). Ed. by W. J. E. JESSOP. Heinemann, London. 30]-. It is sad to record that Professor Fearon died before he had completed this fourth edition of his Introduction to Biochemistry. However, Professor Jessop has ably taken on the difficult task of assembling the manuscript where completed, filling in the missing parts and preparing the manuscript for publication. The present edition of this book retains the general plan of former editions. It has, however, been subdivided into two almost equal parts : the first deals with the structure of living matter, while the second is concerned with metabolism and the way in which the special environment necessary to life is maintained. 142
