I am Nora, and I will be spending the next 9 months here in Bombala as an exchange student. I come from the capital city of Norway, Oslo. It did not take long from when the exchange organisation had their presentation at my school until I had decided that I wanted to be an exchange student myself, and Australia was my first choice. Why? I actually don’t know. Maybe it was the fact that I could spend 10 months as far away from my parents and annoying siblings as possible, or maybe it was all the stereotypes about the Australian people being laid-back. Hi!

    Trendy Food Trends…

Our Year 9/10 Food Technology students have been busy making Chocolate Mousse as part of the ‘Food Trends’ topic – a fun topic which includes looking at trends in food and dining, food styling and food photography.

Year 11 students welcome Nora to our class by cooking an iconic Australian favourite, Pavlova.

My everyday life in Norway is very different from life here. Growing up in the city centrum of Oslo, has made me used to having everything I need within walking distance, however, I very much enjoy the different lifestyle here in Bombala, and I am excited to spend the next 9 months here.

    A message from the Principal…

This week is Education Week and the theme this year is ‘Every student, every voice’.

It is a state wide celebration of student empowerment and how the NSW public education system gives students the skills they need in order to have, and express, a voice during their own educational journey and as engaged global citizens. Student voice is a theme that underpins our commitment for every student in our school to be known, valued and cared for. Our focus on student voice is based upon the following key ideas:

Authentic participation. Student voice is more than just having a say. Valuing and actioning the ideas, opinions and expertise of all students has significant impact for student wellbeing. At Bombala High School we frequently seek the opinions of our students. For example, at the end of last term we listened to the ideas and suggestions of students and used their voice to help shape the development of our whole school approach to classroom management. We have also used student voice to inform the way we meet each morning during Roll Call and the type of Wellbeing activities and excursions we run for each year group.

Partners in learning. Student perspectives, experiences and aspirations shape and enrich our schools and communities and actively influence our decision-making. At Bombala High School we use student voice to help shape the curriculum we offer. All students in Year 9 – 12 can choose courses that support their interests and aspirations, and unlike many other high schools who simply wouldn’t contemplate running a course if there were less than 10 interested students, we actively seek ways for our students to have access to their preferred study pathway.

Respectful relationships. Working collaboratively with other students and teachers our young people grow into engaged learners and ethical citizens able to contribute positively to their school and wider community. Our school values, Personal Best, Respect and Responsibility form the foundation for everything we do at Bombala High School. When we treat others respectfully and take responsibility for our wellbeing and the wellbeing of others, we become empowered to achieve our personal best, and empower others to achieve their personal best.

Connecting communities. We connect our diverse communities by creating and sustaining inclusive, interactive learning environments that use advanced technologies to promote and extend student influence beyond the classroom walls. At Bombala High School, we believe that learning is a lifelong journey. Each student’s path is different and we seek to support the development of the unique strengths and skills of each student. Our personalised approach to learning, combined with our 1:1 laptop program in future-focused learning spaces seeks to promote and extend learning within and beyond our classrooms.

Change makers. A culture of high expectations empowers our students to build a shared sense of purpose, self-value and belonging that will prepare them for future lives as active citizens in an increasingly complex and dynamic society. At Bombala High School we recognise the vital role a growth mindset plays in the development of resilience. Resilience empowers us to embrace challenges. Our capacity to be adaptable and master new skills creates the strong foundation we need for success.

In keeping with this state-wide, annual event to celebrate public education in NSW, we are very proud to acknowledge the achievements of public education, our school community and our students.

    Have a great week!

Yesterday, Years 10, 11 and 12 had the pleasure of attending a presentation by the group Year13 called The Truth Project to discuss life post-school. The two presenters are both successful in their work fields, and shared their personal experiences to give us inspiration for our future endeavours.

We completed a range of activities to help us set goals and find our personal strengths and weaknesses by looking at our intrinsic and extrinsic feelings. We were then asked to do a personalised quiz where we had to choose from a variety of options and the end results showed us potential career matches to suit our personalities and decisions.

We had a great time at this presentation and feel that the program will be of benefit to our lives after school.
