Dunea produces and distributes drinking

water to approximately 1.2 million resi-

dents in South Holland, the Netherlands.

At Dunea, dune water is used as the raw

material for the production of drinking water.

The water content of the dunes is recharged

by supplying purifi ed river water from

the river Meuse. The river water is then

collected in basins and transported continu-

ously through pipelines over a distance of

85 kilometers to the infi ltration lakes of the

dunes. After a period of about two months,

the dune water is regained to be made into

drinking water.

CUSTOMER PROFILE

In 1992, the Engineering Department at Dunea was looking for a drawing management system

to manage the engineering drawings of the drinking water utilities. At that time, the Engineering

Department selected and implemented AutoManager Workflow, a now discontinued engineering

document management system from BlueCielo, to manage drawings and other engineering documents.

In 1997, the ownership of the drawings changed to the Production and Distribution Departments.

The Production Department carries final responsibility for the production of drinking water, while

the Distribution Department is responsible for delivering the water to the customer. This change

of ownership was the start of expanding the functionality of the engineering document manage-

ment system. For the projects and logistics group belonging to the Distribution Department, the

system was reconfigured in such a way that it would support their specific workflow processes.

In 2000, a start was made with scanning and importing all analog archives and microfiches.

In 2004, Dunea upgraded from AutoManager Workflow (now discontinued) to BlueCielo Meridian

for a complete Asset Lifecycle Information (ALIM) solution that would to discover, monitor,

and protect technical asset information throughout the entire asset lifecycle.

The 2004 yearbook of Dunea contained the following statement: “The implementation of BlueCielo

Meridian is an example of the start of a successful ICT project: the internal customers are

satisfied, the implementation costs stayed within budget and operational management is

successfully executed.”

Today, all engineering information and other technical documentation, such as certificates,

material lists, and inspection reports, are managed in BlueCielo Meridian. Approximately 170

staff members from different departments have access to documentation that is essential for

them to carry out their work, such as project management, inspection, maintenance and more.

BlueCielo Meridian is no longer used as much for managing internal engineering projects.

Instead, at any given moment, several thousand documents are under external change with

contractors and other external parties, while BlueCielo Meridian maintains a complete overview

of the status, ownership and history of all these documents.

“Thanks to the workflow functionality of BlueCielo Meridian, I am completely informed about the

progress of dozens of distribution network projects,” says Leo Nijland, Projects and Logistics

Manager at Dunea.

For asset maintenance, Dunea uses the Ultimo Maintenance Management system. Since equip-

ment is becoming more complex and maintenance is an ongoing process at Dunea, asset tag

numbers are essential for identifying and maintaining the equipment and installations. The

BlueCielo Asset Management module provides a direct integration between the asset tag num-

bers in Ultimo and the documentation in BlueCielo Meridian.

By connecting the right documents to the appropriate asset tag numbers, the relationship be-

tween the operational assets and the relevant engineering information is ensured, so that at all

times the right documents are available for the job at hand.

“With the help of BlueCielo Meridian, we have made 50,000 documents easily accessible to

designers, project teams and others who need to have access to these documents,” says Wim

van Grinsven, Operations Manager at Dunea.

BlueCielo Meridian has proven to be a reliable and stable system for Dunea, especially since it

requires only minimal maintenance. Because of the potential and user-friendliness of the ALIM

solution, Dunea still sees more opportunities to broaden its use in the future.
