Sustainable Building

This presentation was created thanks to the support of FRVŠ

project 915/2013 B1d „Tools for teaching design of concrete

and masonry structures in English“

Ing. Vladimíra Vytlačilová, PhD.

Terminology

• Sustainable Building = Green building = Green construction

refers to a structure and using process that is

environmentally responsible and resource-efficient

throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design,

construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and

demolition.

practice expands and complements the classical building

design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort

What is a Green Building?

• Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact

of the built environment on human health and the natural

environment by:

• Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources

• Protecting occupant health and improving employee

productivity

• Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation

Objective

• Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact

of the built environment on human health and the natural

environment by:

• Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources

• Protecting occupant health and improving employee

productivity

• Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation

Life cycle assessment (LCA)

• A life cycle assessment (LCA) can help avoid a narrow

outlook on environmental, social and economic concerns by

assessing a full range of impacts associated with all cradle-

to-grave stages of a process: from extraction of raw

materials through materials processing, manufacture,

distribution, use, repair and maintenance, and disposal or

recycling. Impacts taken into account include (among

others) embodied energy, global warming potential,

resource use, air pollution, water pollution, and waste.

The main stages for LCA:

• Raw material extraction

• Material processing

• Design

• Manufacture

• Distribution

• Use

• Repair/maintenance

• Disposal

Factor for LCA:

• Raw Material use

• Water use

• Energy use

• Waste production

• Waste disposal (air, land, water)

• Transportation steps

Leadership in Energy and Environmental

Design (LEED)

• In 1998, the Washington, D.C., trade association U.S.

Green Building Council developed the LEED certification

which has become the authority for builders who want to

work with the environment.

• The regulations are designed so that construction is healthy

and durable for the occupants and the environment.

Steps to Sustainable building

• Sitting/location

• Energy/ water efficiency

• Natural lighting/heating

• Indoor environmental quality

• Recycled/renewable materials

• Solar/wind power

• Regenerative/adaptive

Capacity Index

• 2009 - RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors)

• Global Zero Carbon Capacity Index.

• The index measures energy efficiency in households,

offices and domestic transport as well as investment in

renewable energy and introduction of policy packages to

reduce carbon consumption within the built environment.
