INTRODUCTION

This bulletin is the eighth comprehensive historical reference volume of State and area employment and earnings statistics released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and replaces Employment and Earnings, States and Areas, 1939-68 (BLS Bulletin 1370-6).

Consistent with previous editions, this volume is directed toward grouping together information available under the Current Employment Statistics Program for a State or area. A special section, containing analytical and summary data, precedes the main body of statistics.

Employment data relate to the nonfarm sector of the economy, and exclude proprietors, the self-employed, domestic workers in private homes, and unpaid family workers. Hours and earnings for manufacturing and mining relate to production workers, for contract construction to construction workers, and for the remaining nonagricultural components to nonsupervisory workers.

AREA COVERAGE

This edition presents detailed industry data on 214 major labor areas most are Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Definitions of all the areas may be found at the back of the book.

Data, on the following, are shown for the first time:1. Employment, hours, and earnings Modesto-Turlock and

Salinas-Monterey, California.2. Hours and earnings Springfield, Missouri; Las Vegas,

Nevada; and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

SO U R C ES OF DATA

The Current Employment Statistics Program is a Federal-State undertaking conducted jointly by State employment security agencies, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Manpower Administration in 44 States and the District of Columbia; in the remaining States, the program is a cooperative endeavor by State Departments of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Data are based on information from payroll records submitted voluntarily to State agencies by a representative sample of in

dustrial, commercial, and government establishments, employing collectively about 30 million workers. The Technical Note following the statistical tables describes the major characteristics of the program, such as scope, concepts, survey methods, estimating techniques, benchmark adjustments, and limitations.

IN D U S T R IA L C LA S SIF IC A T IO N

The industrial classification system used for these data is described in the Bureau of the Budgets 1967 Standard Industrial Classification Manual. Industry titles are generally those recommended by the Bureau of the Budget in its standard list of short titles. All titles in this book are further identified by the appropriate SIC code(s). The specific industries selected for publication by the State agencies are generally those which best reflect the currently significant economic activities in the State or area. Available industrial detail are presented, except for "residual groups (e.g., "other durable goods ). New series or industry combinations are introduced as shifts occur in the economy.

P U B L IC A T IO N OF C U R R E N T DATA

Current State and area statistics are published monthly by State agencies and may be secured upon request to the appropriate agency listed on the inside back cover of this bulletin. Timely statistics are also published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Employment and Earnings, which provides employment data for the major nonfarm industry divisions, and hours and earnings in manufacturing for all States and areas shown in this bulletin.

CAUTION

Each year the industry employment series for States and areas are adjusted to more recent benchmarks. These adjustments may also affect the hours and earnings series since employment levels are used as weights. Although each of the cooperating State agencies adjusts series to benchmark data for the first quarter of the preceding year, the length of time required to accomplish this task varies among the agencies. Except as noted, all series in this volume have been adjusted to March 1969 benchmarks. Monthly data subsequent to the benchmark period, as well as the resultant annual averages, are subject to future revision.
