  • FROM WHERE I SIT

    JULY 2016

I am thankful, and in awe! You have blessed Deb and me so much! I am not even sure words

can express how much we appreciate the love we feel from our church family as you send us forth on a time of Sabbatical! Thank you! The Sabbatical Committee has been working for over a year on preparations for this event. They have designed a wonderful brochure to help answer questions. And along with the Worship Committee, the Elders, the Executive Board, the Staff, and many others, have assembled a great team of people for Pastoral Leadership and Care while we are gone. I am so proud of this church, and love you all so much! Some of my personal goals for this Sabbath time include spending intimate time with my Lord. We talk often, but usually about church and business things. I need some time to just “be” in His Presence! I also want to spend intimate time with my wife. We too fall into that same trap, and need to simply enjoy being a couple. Right behind that is time with family and friends, people we don’t normally get to see. I know it is strange, but they all seem to take weekends off, which is our busiest time! And then of course there is time with myself. I would like to unplug for a bit, and unwind, and relax. About a third of this scheduled time will be spent alone. Our plans include family vacation prior to the beginning of the Sabbatical, so we will start off with a week at Family Camp at the Crystal Conference Center followed by a week in a little cabin in the middle of the UP. These will both include our kids and grandkids. We then have a stay as Lighthouse Keepers in Wisconsin, and thanks to a sister-in-law’s sister-in-law, a night at the Grand Hotel for our thirty-fifth anniversary. I will be attending a week-long “Leadership Conference” and time of “Immersion” at the Inter-national House of Prayer in Kansas City, and a week of prayer and fasting and reflection at a Clergy Retreat cabin. Deb and I will also be attending a week-long “Open Heavens” Confer-ence at Bethel in Redding, California. In addition

Need a phone number to volunteer, join, or help a working committee? Please call the appropriate person listed below:

we are going to repeat our honeymoon with hiking and camping in some National Parks, along with visiting family and friends along the way. And I actually have several days planned at home as well, to catch up on all those “projects” that there never seems to be enough time for! Last, but not least, I will be participat-ing in five Continuing Education Courses; “The Study of Effective Reasoning”, “Stress and Your Body”, “Religious Debates in Western Culture”, “The Art of Conflict Management”, and “Transformational Leadership”. We are truly looking forward to seeing what God has in store for us as this all unfolds! I know we will miss you all deeply, though. So please know that you will be in our daily prayers. And please, keep us in your prayers too! I know God will use this time to bless all of us! Yours in Christ, Pastor Bob & Deb

  • SUMMER CHILDREN’S MINISTRY During the summer months we will offer a more structured Kid’s Kare program for children ages 3-7 years following the children’s message. This time will include a story, an activity and singing all under the leadership of an adult or senior high age youth. There is also infant care during the 10 am service and children are always welcomed to stay in the worship services and use a worship packet from the table at the entrance to the sanctuary. There is also a glassed cry room with audio at the back of the sanctuary for those who would like this option for worship.

If you have an idea for a study or ministry that you think our church should offer, please make that idea known to a staff person or committee chair. If you are asked to serve in a position, please prayerfully consider the request before respond-ing. Your Nominations Committee is: Jo Ellen Lathwell, 882-1398 Russ Tiller, 882-5958 Charlotte Putney, 352-9880

SPECIAL MUSIC Our faithful choir takes a break from anthem singing during part of the summer. In place of the anthem there is a need for special music. This music may be choral or instrumental. If you would like to serve in this way, or know of someone in the community that might like to share their gift with our church, please talk with Carolyn Waterson, director of music. There are a few dates still open. During the month of June, we are thankful to Jim Bekkering, Judy Ingleston and Lynette Williams for their gift of music in helping us worship our God.

MINISTRY WORKERS NEEDED The church is in need of volunteers for the following Sunday morning ministries: Worship leader/reader, children’s sermons, Kids Kare, greeters, ushers, and fellowship hosts. Please sign up on the appropriate volunteer list on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall to serve in one of these areas for the summer months. If each person or family signed up to serve on one of the lists they would be full into the fall and that would be a great help to the Sunday morning worship and ministry time and wonderful way to share with others.

CLEARANCE REGISTRY It is that time of year when you are asked to renew your clearance registry information for the next year. The church asks any adult who works with children and youth to have this clearance done each year. This is a way we help assure parents of the safety of their children when they are a part of a ministry at Blaine. Beginning in mid-July there will be paperwork available at church to fill out for this clearance. So if you are a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, Kid’s Kare helper, nursery person or do occasional childcare for church events, or transport children, or are a Kids Hope mentor, please plan to participate in the clearance registry this year. Thanks for your help with this important part of being a caring church.

Pastor Bob’s 2016 Sabbatical will start this summer. Our pastor will take this time for rest, relaxation and renewal both spiritually and physically. Brochures are available in fellowship hall to answer frequently asked questions regard-ing this sabbatical.

    MISSIONS

Our church reaches out to many community organizations to support local missions. Often there is information about needs; volunteers; special projects or fund raisers for these mission organizations. Benzie Area Christian Neighbors or BACN is Benzie and nor thern Manistee County’s food pantry and clothing give away. They have many ways to help neighbors in need with other emergency services. Benzie Academy is the county’s alternative school for Benzie Central and Frankfort High Schools. The mission committee has taken them under their wing to provide needed food items for their “Cupboard of Love. The mission committee also provides a luncheon for the students each month. Gas cards may also be given. Sarah Esper, Benzie Academy teacher, will be glad to answer any questions. Habitat for Humanity of Benzie County is like the Habitat for Humanity nationwide. Benzie County has their own group with a volunteer board to organize building and help with fund raising. A home is built almost every year in Benzie County. Proceeds from The Restore (see the ad) help fund Benzie County’s Habitat. Operation Christmas Child - This year , millions of boys and gir ls in a hundred countr ies are graduating from The Greatest Journey, the Bible study and discipleship course that Samaritan’s Purse has developed for children who have received shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. We praise God for each and every one! Sincerely, Franklin Graham Love INC (Love in the Name of Chr ist) is the agency in Manistee that serves Manistee County and parts of Benzie County. They bring Christian churches together, across denominational lines, to help the poor by meeting immediate needs such as food and clothing; to longer-term responses through relational ministries such as life skills training in our Family Life Center program.

WEEK OF COMPASSION FLINT WATER CRISIS

Rev. Caroline Hamilton-Arnold was our guest speaker at the

March 17 WoC Mission Dinner at Blaine. That night she asked us to pray for the victims, revisit the Flint-Water-Emergency often and don’t forget about the need for safe water in Flint, MI. I received this e-mail from Caroline this week:

According to the voluntary organizations updates and word from our churches in Flint, the need is more for cash and advocacy. FEMA is present and will be supplying water and filters through August. Plus, water bottles are logistically complicated, as they require labor for unloading and space for storing, only provide water for a short period (think about how many gallons of water used per day for drinking, cooking, and washing), and create a waste problem. Peace, Caroline

For more information from the UCC church in Flint, visit: http://www.woodsidechurch.net/flint-water-emergency/

    Benzie Academy “Cupboard of Love”

    Collection Sunday, July 3rd

Please use the blue totes for your offerings. The Cupboard of Love established by the Blaine mission committee is to supplement the school lunches or be a snack at school: macaroni & cheese, spaghettio’s, and other single dish microwavable meals are perfect! You could also donate fruit or Jell-O cups, granola bars. These items are ok to put in the pantry until school starts in the fall.

depended on You. ~ St. Augustine

    Our Mission

Our purpose at the Blaine Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is to live and share the love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As Christ’s disciples, we accept the call to reach out with God’s love to those outside the church. To this end we commit ourselves to witness and serve in the fellowship and traditions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
