In joining 5/6D at the start of the week, they held a “Circle Time” – a session when the whole class meets together, sitting in a circle. Class teacher Debbie McDermott (as with all the teachers) is very strategic in using this forum to develop a wide range of skills and attitudes such as confidence, self-esteem, as well as speaking and listening. Joining 5/6D at the start of this week I could see that this forum has developed trust and helped the class to explore ideas of both an academic and social nature. Whilst the Reading Hour at BLPS is often based around rotational tasks, sometimes reading strategies may be taught as a whole class activity. This was the case on Monday, with all children reading from the same text, but with different groups focusing on different “learning intentions”: investigating (i) reading for fluency and understanding (Guided Reading with the teacher), (ii) the elements of grammar (focusing on superlatives and comparatives), (iii) vocabulary (highlighting interesting and unknown words), and (iv) “the detectives” (creating a list of questions in response to the text). What impressed me most was the way that the children knew the routines to effectively assist each other with great discussion, whereby the children were able to add on to each other’s knowledge and confirm their own learning, as “we learn 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we see and hear, 70% of what we discuss, 80% of what we experience, and 95% of what we teach others(American psychiatrist and author William Glasser). JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

Be on time, school starts at 9! The expectation is that at 9am, when the two minutes of music finishes, all educational programs begin on time and without distractions. The start of the day is a highly important social time for students and being here before 9am allows them to start the day with their peers and this can reduce anxiety and stress related to understanding the day’s program and the activities that start at 9am. A couple of numeracy challenges were held in the library, with the junior children enjoying a scavenger hunt (Tuesday) and the senior students (and staff) doing battle in a times tables competition today. Tomorrow we invite all children to dress up as their favourite book character – with the “best dressed” to be acknowledged at assembly. THANKS TO OUR EDUCATION SUPPORT (ES) STAFF August is ES Recognition Month where we have the chance to formally thank a group of people who make an invaluable and indispensable contribution to our school. Their roles are diverse and include those who work in the Office, those who work supporting individual students in classrooms, taking care of injuries and illness in sickbay, and completing the many maintenance jobs around the school – whether the grounds, the computers or in the Library. The one thing they have in common is a desire to support the school and to help our children and our school community. They are dedicated, hardworking individuals who will do whatever it takes to meet the staff and children’s’ needs. They really help to make Blackburn Lake PS an excellent place to work and learn. Quite simply we could not operate without these people, so on behalf of the children, parents and teachers … thank you to our fantastic ES team! Joining Chris Larkin and Caroline Knight in the office we welcome Candice Marks whilst Lyn Ford is on Long Service Leave for the remainder of this term. MUSIC INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM

Last night close to 70 people attended A Musical Celebration – an evening where our instrumental teachers generously gave their time and displayed their tuneful talents. We thank the families who attended for their support of this program, with everyone in attendance seeing (and hearing) firsthand the reasons our instrumental program continues to grow. Thanks once again to Sam Collins for her organisation of music, and indeed the energy and enthusiasm of our tutors.

FATHERS’ DAY STALL Another area of support in our school that we don’t take for granted is our parents. Next week our terrific Parents Association will again be running a Fathers’ Day Stall on Thursday to enable students to purchase a small gift for their father or other important male in their life. Thankyou to parents Robyn and Simone who coordinate such a superb range of gifts (priced from $1 to $10) and also the parent volunteers who will make this stall possible. OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE (OSHC) PROGRAM Whilst talking about our support staff, I would like to highlight the wonderful service that Camp Australia provides to our families. Tasmin Price and her team run an outstanding Out of Hours Care program that is greatly appreciated by the children and families who rely on having this after hours service at school. The OSHC program is a crucial part of our school community and I would like to thank all its staff for the important contribution they make to Blackburn Lake Primary. (and don’t forget to register your interest with Tasmin for OHSC on our upcoming Curriculum Day on Monday 1st September).

A reminder that next Monday is a pupil free day (there is a no school due to staff Curriculum Day)

I hope you can make it to tomorrow’s whole school Assembly @ 3pm to acknowledge our ‘Students of the Week’ and hear reports from this week’s National Literacy & Numeracy Week celebrations.

MAKE YOUR OWN SLIME!

1. Pour all of the glue into the mixing bowl. 2. Pour all of the water to the mixing bowl with the glue. 3. Stir the glue and water together. 4. Add your food colour now - about 6 drops should do it. 5. Now add the liquid starch and stir it in. 6. It should be nice and blobby by now. As you play with your

slimy concoction, it will become more stretchy and easier to hold. 7. Explore your slimy creation and store it in a zip bag when you are not using it.

SUPER SPORTS REPORT District Athletics What started out as very chilly day turned into a lovely, sunny day. Our athletes performed very well and many ribbons were achieved for placing in the first four in the different events. A very pleasing aspect to day was our overall improvement on our efforts from last year. Quite a number of our students will now progress to the Division Athletics held on in the first week of term 4. More details will be in next week’s newsletter.

Hooptime Our grade 6 day was a great success. Many tired and sore bodies by the end of the day. It was great to see the wonderful attitude displayed by our Basketballers and the improvement in their game during the day. Both our All Stars teams won exciting grand finals and will progress to next term’s regional finals. Our future stars and rookies performed very well notching up some wins, draws and losses along the way. Grade 4 will be up and dribbling on Wednesday, September 10. Parent helper requests and permission form have been handed out. Please check bags!!! If you can assist on the day please complete the form and return to CLASSROOM teachers as soon as possible.

Father’s Day Stall

Thursday morning 4 September Come along on the morning of Thursday 4th September to select a special gift for your Dad or Grandpa/Pa/Pop. Items will be priced from $1 to $10. Please bring your shopping bag, so that we can get the treasures home safely. We are doing things a bit differently this time….the stall is migrating to the DJ Centre so that we have more room for older children to shop with their younger brothers and sisters…so that

gift selection can be a team effort, funds can be pooled and Dad avoids getting a duplicate present. We need some parents to help to set the stall up on Wednesday afternoon from 3.30-5.30pm and help run the stall and pack up on Thursday morning from 9-12pm. If you are able to help out, please either click on the following link http://doodle.com/5iqwkmhcp96anzic and
