Thank you for choosing a BlackBerry® Curve™ smartphone! To set up your device, insertthe SIM card (if a SIM card was included with your device), insert the battery, and completethe setup wizard. For more information, see the Start Here poster that came with your device.

Important: Before you use your device or any accessories for your device, see the Safetyand Product Information booklet, located on the BlackBerry® User Tools CD. For the mostrecent version of the booklet, visit www.blackberry.com/go/docs.

About inserting a SIM cardA SIM card is a small rectangular plastic card that stores important information about yourwireless service. A SIM card might already be inserted in your BlackBerry device.

Insert a SIM card into your device if one of the following situations applies:

• Your wireless service provider supplied you with a SIM card or it is included in the boxwith your device. Remove the SIM card from its packaging and insert it into your device.

• You are switching from one device that required a SIM card to another device. Removethe SIM card from your previous device and insert it into your new BlackBerry device.Depending on your wireless service provider, you might need a PIN code for the SIMcard. For more information, contact your wireless service provider.

Phone basics

Make a call

1. On the Home screen or in the phone application, type a phone number.

2. Press the key.

To end the call, press the key.

Change your ring tone

1. On the Home screen, click the Profiles icon.

2. Click Advanced

3. Highlight a notification profile.

4. Press the Menu key.

5. Click Show Ring Tones.

6. Click a media folder that contains songs, ring tones, or voice notes.

7. Highlight a song, ring tone, or voice note.

8. Press the Menu key.

Pair with a Bluetooth enabled device

1. On the Home screen, in the Setup folder, click the Set Up Bluetooth icon.

2. Click Search or Listen.

3. If necessary, click a Bluetooth® enabled device.

4. If necessary, type the passkey for the Bluetooth enabled device on yourBlackBerry® device.

5. If necessary, type the passkey for the Bluetooth enabled device on the Bluetoothenabled device.

I cannot make or receive calls

Try performing the following actions:• Verify that your BlackBerry® device is connected to the wireless network.• Verify that your wireless service plan includes phone or voice services.• If you cannot make calls and fixed dialing is turned on, verify that the phone number for

your contact appears in your fixed dialing list or turn off fixed dialing.• If you have traveled to another country and you have not changed your smart-dialing

options, dial the full phone number, including the country code and area code, for yourcontact.

• If you are not receiving calls, verify that call blocking and call forwarding are turned off.• Your device or your SIM card might support more than one phone number, even if you

only have one phone number. Verify that your phone number is set as your active phonenumber.

• If you have more than one phone number associated with your device, verify that thephone number that you want to make calls from and receive calls to is set as your activephone number.

Add a contact

1. On the Home screen, click the Contacts icon.

2. Click Add Contact.

3. Type the contact information.

4. Press the key.

5. Click Save.

About emergency callsIf you are outside of a wireless coverage area and the SOS wireless coverage indicatorappears, you can only call emergency numbers. Your BlackBerry® device is designed toallow emergency calls even when your device is locked. Depending on your device modeland the wireless network that your device is connected to, your device is also designed toallow emergency calls when the SIM card is not inserted. If the connection to the wirelessnetwork is turned off when you initiate an emergency call, your device is designed to connectto the wireless network automatically.

You can only make emergency calls by typing official emergency access numbers (forexample, 911 or 112).

Note: You should not rely on any wireless device for essential communications, includingmedical emergencies. Emergency numbers may vary by location and emergency calls maybe blocked or impeded by network, environmental, or interference issues.

Message basics

Send an email message

1. On the Home screen, click the Messages icon.

2. Press the key.

3. Click Compose Email.

4. In the To field, type an email address.

5. Type a message.

6. Press the key.

7. Click Send.

Send an SMS text message

You can send an SMS text message to up to ten recipients.

1. On the Home screen, click the Messages icon.

2. Press the key.

3. Click Compose SMS.

4. In the To field, type an SMS phone number (include the country code and area code).

I cannot send or receive messages

Try performing the following actions:• Verify that your BlackBerry® device is connected to the wireless network. If you are not

in a wireless coverage area, your device should send the messages when you return toa wireless coverage area.

• If you created an email address or added an existing email address to your device usingthe email setup screen in the setup wizard, verify that you have received an activationmessage on your device from the BlackBerry® Internet Service. If you have not receivedan activation message (the message might take a short period of time to arrive), in thesetup wizard, open the email setup screen to send a service book to your device.

• If you have not received a registration message from the wireless network, register yourdevice. On the Home screen, click the Options icon. Click Advanced Options. ClickHost Routing Table. Press the key. Click Register Now.

• If you switched devices, verify that you completed the process for switching devicesautomatically or manually so that your messages are sent to your new device.

• If the menu item for sending a message does not appear, verify that you have added anemail address or a PIN for your contact.

• Resend the message. Open the message. Press the key. Click Resend.

• If you use email message filters, verify that the options for email message filters are setcorrectly.

Media basics

Take a picture

Depending on your BlackBerry® device, the camera or video camera feature might not besupported.

1. On the Home screen, click the Camera icon.

2. If necessary, to zoom in to or out from a subject, slide your finger up or down on thetrackpad.

3. To take a picture, click the trackpad.

After you take a picture, use the icons at the bottom of the screen or open the menu to send,save, rename, upload, or delete the picture or to set the picture as your Home screenbackground image.

Record a video

To perform this task, you must have a media card inserted in your BlackBerry® device.

Depending on your BlackBerry® device, the camera or video camera feature might not besupported.

1. On the Home screen, in the Applications folder, click the Video Camera icon.

2. Click the trackpad.

3. To pause recording, click the trackpad again.

1. On the Home screen, click the Browser icon.

2. Perform one of the following actions:• If a web address field appears on the screen, type a web address.• If a web address field does not appear on the screen, press the key. Click

Go To. Type a web address.

3. Press the Enter key.

Personalize your device

You can install the BlackBerry® Desktop Software on your computer and connect yourBlackBerry® device to your computer to charge your device, to synchronize data betweenyour device and your computer and to perform other functions.

With the BlackBerry Desktop Software, you can also personalize your device bysynchronizing music, pictures, and other media files to your device that you have stored onyour computer.

For more information about synchronizing media files, synchronizing data, backing up orrestoring data, adding applications, or other functions, see online help that is available inthe BlackBerry Desktop Manager or visit http://www.blackberry.com/go/mediaplayer.

System requirements: BlackBerry Desktop Software• Intel® compatible 486 or higher computer that is compliant with USB 1.1 or later• Windows® XP or later• BlackBerry® User Tools CD

Install the BlackBerry Desktop Software

1. If your BlackBerry® device is connected to your computer, disconnect it.

2. Insert the BlackBerry® User Tools CD into the CD drive on your computer.

3. Click BlackBerry Desktop Software.

4. Complete the instructions on the screen.

5. When the installation is complete, connect the smaller end of the USB cable to theUSB port on the side of your device.

6. Connect the larger end of the USB cable to the USB port on your computer.Note: If the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager does not open automatically, on the taskbar,click Start > Programs > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager.

Insert a media cardYou can use a microSD media card to extend the memory available on your BlackBerry®device for storing media files such as songs, ring tones, videos, or pictures. The media cardmight be sold separately from your device.

Synchronize your media files

1. Connect your BlackBerry® device to your computer.

2. On your computer, open the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager.

About switching devicesIf you are switching from a BlackBerry® device that is associated with one or more existingemail addresses (for example, a Google Mail™ or Windows Live™ Hotmail® email account),to start receiving email messages to your new BlackBerry device, you must complete theprocess for switching devices using the BlackBerry® Internet Service email setupapplication. To complete the process for switching devices automatically, follow the promptsthat appear when you access the email setup application on your new BlackBerry device.If you do not receive the prompts or if you decline any of the prompts, email messages willcontinue to be sent to your previous device until you complete the process for switchingdevices manually.

You can also import data from your previous BlackBerry device, Palm® device, or WindowsMobile® powered device to your new BlackBerry device using the switch device wizard toolof the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. For more information about switching devices, seethe online help that is available in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Switch your device manuallyIf you do not receive prompts to complete the process for switching devices automaticallywhen you access the email setup application, or if you decline any of the prompts, you mustcomplete the process for switching devices manually.

To complete this task you must know the PIN for your new BlackBerry® device and,depending on your wireless service provider, either your new device IMEI, ESN, or MEID. Tofind the required device information on your new device, on the Home screen, click theOptions icon. Click Status.

1. On the Home screen or in the Setup folder, click the Email Settings icon.

2. If necessary, log in to the email setup application.

3. On the Email Accounts screen, press the key.

4. Click Change Device.

5. Type the new device information.

6. Press the key.

7. Click Save.

Carrying your deviceYour BlackBerry® device might not come with a holster (body-worn carrying solutionequipped with an integrated belt clip). It is designed and manufacturednot to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by theFederal Communications Commission (FCC) of the U.S. Government, Industry Canada ofthe Canadian Government (IC), and the recommendations of The Council of the EuropeanUnion. The exposure standard for wireless devices employs a unit of measurement knownas the Specific Absorption Rate, or SAR.
