Collected Short Stories by Roald Dahl A complete collec-tion of dark, twisted and fantastically written short stories, this is perfect for teenagers and adults. With over fifty lingering tales, this book con-tains favou-rites such as ‘Lamb to the Slaugh-ter’, where a guilty wife attempts to conceal the murder of her husband by feeding the only evidence to the police. Genius!

Sleep by Roddy Doyle For an introduction to this charming Irish writer, Sleep is a lovely text, in which a husband admires his sleeping wife and reflects upon his life with her. Despite the brevity of the tale, Doyle develops strong characters, combining context with emotion to create a softness and aection which is incredible touching.

The Heart of Dark-ness by Joseph Conrad Although this is more of a novella, it is one of the greatest short stories: dark, captivating and with

a torrent of hid-den mean-ing flowing beneath the surface. Beau-tifully written and darkly magical, it’s a must-read.

The Meta-morphosis by

Franz KafkaThis wonderful story tells the tale of Gregor Samsa, who one day wakes up to find that he has turned into an insect. Exploring the themes of man and the natu-ral world, alienation and morality, this tale is darkly funny and brilliantly written.

The Bottle Imp by Robert Louis Ste-vensonThe Bottle Imp can grant any wish, but with a chill-

ing caveat: die with it in your posses-sion and your soul will burn in hell for eternity (not a happy thought) - and the bottle can only be sold for less than the purchase price. When Keawe finds himself in desperate need of the bottle, he discovers it only to realise it has a sinister value of just one cent. This is sus-pense story-telling at its best.

The Yellow Wall-paper by Charlotte Perkins GilmanThis is the brilliantly written account of postnatal depres-sion in the Victorian era, recounting the decline of a young woman’s mental health and the lack of understanding from her family as she is imprisoned in a

room of her house. Both sin-

ister and desperate-ly sad, this will grip any reader until the very last line.

Oscar Wilde’s Stories for all Ages by Oscar Wilde and Stephen Fry

This wonderful collection com-bines some of the best tales of Oscar Wilde, presented in a beautifully illustrated book, featuring a fore-word and introduc-tion to each story by his biggest fan, Stephen Fry. For first time visitors to Wilde’s work, ‘The Selfish Giant’ is a must-read, telling the enchanting story of a giant who lives perpetually in Winter, until he allows children into his castle and his heart.

Want to read more but never seem able to find the time? Our collection of fantastic short story books features something for everyone – the perfect way to become involved in a high-impact or touching tale, when all you have is twenty minutes.

Dress your home for winter with layers of cosiness

• Throw down a deep pile rug to add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot.

• Swap sheer, pale, lightweight curtains or blinds for something heavier – wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair.

• On sofas and armchairs, pile up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece.

• Replace pale bed linen with sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets.

• Feature walls may no longer be cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion – it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it.

History The Old Post Office was originally a house, which was converted in 1879 by Norman Shaw and extended to its current layout in 1905 by Ernest Newton. It was then

operated as a village store and post office until 1998 when it was transformed into an office and was used in this way until earlier this year.

All change for Cheltenham! The Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway has recently launched an appeal for funds to repair the Chicken Curve embankment north of Winchcombe. This is the third embankment the steam railway has had to repair during its short life; all the result of shortcomings in the Great Western Railway's construction over a century ago. This article follows on from my last article and tells the story behind the first trains to link Winchcombe with Bishop's Cleeve through Gretton and Gotherington.

By the end of the nineteenth century the Great Western Railway had the unenviable nickname of the 'Great Way Round' and a direct line between Birmingham and Bristol was seen as one of the essential routes to erase this unwanted label. Not only would it compete with the Midland Railway's route (which still exists) but would prevent other companies from building in the area; as far back as 1860 there had been a plan to link Winchcombe to Beckford.

So an act of parliament was passed in 1899 and building began in November 1902 from Honeybourne. Originally it had been planned to start from Cheltenham, but the council had objected to some of the proposals and this delayed the work there. The navvies who built the line lived in camps which followed the construction. At Gotherington the logbook for the school records twenty three railway children attending in November 1905, but by the time the school had been extended fifteen months later, only two navvy families remained!

Although a route for express trains, costs were kept down as much as possible. The original survey included a four mile tunnel under Cleeve Hill with the line passing between Winchcombe and Sudeley, giving the townspeople a much more convenient station than that at Greet. The actual line deviated from this route at the Chicken Curve embankment, the site of the present problem. Embankments were built largely from spoil from the cuttings, but their

Page 11: Bishop's Cleeve OctNov11

GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY

foundations and drainage caused concerns for the Great Western Railway and British Railways until the line's closure in 1976. In November 1903 a major disaster occurred when part of the Stanway viaduct collapsed, killing four navvies.

The line was opened in stages from Honeybourne; to Broadway in August 1904; to Toddington in December 1904; and to Winchcombe in February 1905. The tunnel at Greet delayed the opening of the next stage and so passengers were carried by motor bus, starting from The George Hotel in the town to the station, then through Gretton, Gotherington and Bishop's Cleeve to Cheltenham. This journey took eighty minutes and the bus ran three return services each weekday and so for the first time people could travel between Winchcombe and Bishop's Cleeve by public transport. When the railway reached Bishop's Cleeve in June 1906, the bus started from there, but from 1 August the trains ran all the way into St James' station in Cheltenham. The timetable showed eight trains a day linking Winchcombe and Bishop's Cleeve - a far cry from today's three buses a week!

Incidentally, the expresses for which the line had been built, did not start for another two years, after another new line was built between Birmingham and Stratford on Avon. The remains of Cheltenham's new station then built at Malvern Road can still be seen along the Honeybourne cycle path. - written by David Aldred

As the country well and truly feels the financial pinch of the recession,

there’s a lot of pressure on us to be careful with our money, to spend it wisely and to adapt to a less indulgent lifestyle. So buying those designer labelled beauty products - complete with very large price tags - can become dicult to justify for

those of us on a weekly budget.

Yes, it’s hard to fight the allure of the brand and the promises that come with it, not to mention the sublime packaging and determined sales pitch from the assistant.

We all have a tendency to think that if it’s designer and expensive, then it’s guaranteed to make our skin more youthful, our lips look fuller and our lashes appear longer. We reassure ourselves that the expense is, of course, worthwhile but in reality, are there other products that can transform us from plain to gorgeous, for half the cost?

Is a healthy glow, flawless skin, luscious lashes and perfect pout only available if you buy into expensive top brands or is there an eective value for money alternative?

Well, thanks to the new trend in budget beauty, a superb range of aordably priced buys are emerging. They might not be quite as exciting and glamorous as designer alternatives, but they do oer surprising results at pleasing prices.

The once uninteresting ‘value’ ranges have been overhauled and replaced with ones that are far more likely to grab our attention and make us realise that these products can stand up well against the competition. After all, what makes a beauty product great is what it can do for you, not the name on the container.

With supermarkets like Tesco leading the way with unbelievably cheap prices on cosmetics, these budget buys provide a great way for us to try out dierent or fashion-forward make-up looks, that we usually wouldn’t want to invest a lot of money in.

The cheap price tag makes experimenting fun, and a few pounds lost in an unsuitable lipstick is easy to live with, unlike the hefty credit card bill from the beauty counter of a top brand.

And it isn’t just cosmetics that are available at bargain prices. Everyday essentials are great value too. If you love relaxing with expensive bath and body products then you won’t be disappointed. The Body Shop - although slightly more expensive than some of the really

cheap budget buys - is always the best for sumptuous, sweet smelling ranges that are perfect for pampering, cater for all needs and rival any designer fragrance.

iconic designer logo looks so much more sophisticated in any handbag than a budget alternative, when on the lips the two look equally eective. And of course, with what you save on a designer lipstick, you can invest in expanding your make-up bag, finding a new look that really suits you and a satisfaction in knowing that, even with all the new purchases, you are still saving money.

by A. O’Brien

I have decided that I’m going to be famous. I’m going to be a celeb!

I’ll be talked about in gossip columns, ‘papped’ on holiday in Marbella, employed to promote the latest ‘must have’ items, and generally adored by millions. I’ll wear my sunglasses indoors, carry a giant handbag and clutch a bottle of water wherever I go.

I may even have my own website where, for a small subscription fee, my fans will be provided with an exclusive insight into my life, philosophy and forthcoming appearances. I’ll definitely Twitter every aspect of my daily existence, and I’ll probably enter into Twitter wars with fellow celebs - I’m looking forward to this.

I will, of course, release a fitness DVD. I’m already practising my cover shot poses. For the ‘Before’ I’ll be make-up free, sad faced, slouching and pale as dishwater. In the ‘After’ shot, I’ll be transformed into a smiling, tanned, toned, glamour puss. However, you may have to wait a couple of years for the DVD as I haven’t yet employed a personal trainer (and I still have Haagen Dazs ice cream and toee cheesecake in the freezer).

I’m going to have a spot of Botox in the frown lines between my eyes, and just the teeniest bit of filler injected into my top lip. I’ve booked a spray tan and am considering waist length hair extensions. I may even have my belly button pierced...though this may also have to wait until after the

Nothing ventured, nothing gained

A Star Is Born

personal trainer has ‘finished’ with me.

However, I’m definitely going to have at least one tattoo. No anchors, skulls or loving tributes to my parents but something classy, mysterious, profound and uplifting. It has to be in Latin and fairly short as I’m not good with needles. I’m considering ‘Nosce te ipsum’ (Google it!) at the nape of my neck. Thus, when my hair extensions are swept atop my head the world will be able to see what a cultured, educated person I am; for there, hidden under my luscious locks, is the ‘real’ me. Or perhaps I should have something in Greek?

If I’ve time I may write the first instalment of my autobiography. I’m not quite sure about this yet as there are some aspects of my life that I’d prefer to remain private (the drunken rendition of The Teddy Bear’s Picnic – the shame of it). Nonetheless, I’m willing to provide a frank, honest and open account of my life that will inspire, uplift and leave my fans awestruck at my fortitude in the face of life’s adversities (as long as I have full and final editorial control).

I’ll have an agent and a publicist to make bookings, deal with press enquiries and field intrusions into my private life. They will also advise on how best to maximise the opportunities that my celebrity status will present. Oh, and I’d just love to have a Personal Assistant. I’d be the nicest celebrity that they’d ever assisted. I’d make them cups of coee, feed them cake, fuss over them and tell them to put their feet up if they looked tired... and it would be nice to have someone to chat to in the limo on airport runs.

I haven’t quite decided exactly how I’m going to become a celebrity but it will probably involve reality TV. Britain’s Got Talent is likely my best bet; I just have to work out what my particular talent is. I think I may send o for the application forms soon.

Don’t forget to vote for me – my celebrity depends on you!

A Proverbial Life...

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

When I started out as a reporter back in the mid-1970s, journalists were heroic boozers. Epic, even. The stories I was told! But on the local weekly in the Midlands where I did my training they were just that – stories. The older staers span yarns of the liquid lunches of yore that had lasted for hours if not days; the lunches over which these tales were told tended to be a sandwich eaten at the desk. Very, very occasionally I would venture, normally alone, sometimes with the sports editor, to the pub next door for a pint of cold, gassy keg beer and a dried-up cheese roll with a copy of the Sun or the Mirror (because in those days the red-tops were comparatively new and all journalists, whatever they told you, secretly admired their braggadocio) and the Stranglers on the juke-box (turned right down so as not to upset the granddads). All very demure.

Then I joined the brewing trade press and life changed dramatically, especially life after one o’ clock. On my induction day the News Editor and Chief Reporter dragged me to the nearest pub. By 2.30pm I was anxious. By 3pm I was terrified. “Err... shouldn’t we be getting back?” I said nervously. The News Editor gestured expansively in the general direction of a party of pixillated worthies a few tables away. “That’s the Editor, that’s the Deputy Editor, that’s the Production Editor,” he said. “When they go, we go.”

They didn’t rise until 4 o’clock; by then I could scarcely rise at all. But these lunches were, if not the norm, certainly nothing unusual, especially if one were being entertained. I remember, vaguely,

Working from home

a press ocer from Grand Met taking me to a restaurant to “explain” why the company was screwing its pub tenants so heartily. A couple of scotches (doubles) at the bar were followed by a bottle of white wine (between us) with the fish, another bottle of white (for him) with the veal and a bottle of red (for me) with the beef, a half bottle (again, between us) of rather good Sauternes with pudding, a glass of port each with the cheese, and a large Calvados (for me) and a Cognac (for him) with the cigars. By the end of it all I agreed with him wholeheartedly, which I suppose was the point of the exercise.

If you could stand any more of my boastfulness I could easily reel o a dozen more lunches like that. But the everyday pub lunches were scarcely less gargantuan – in my favourite Fuller’s pub around the corner from the oce I would routinely demolish three pints of ESB, each with an accompanying scotch, in an hour. No wonder I’m so fat.

All this came to an abrupt end the day the paper was relocated from the City to Slough, over an hour’s drive from home. Lunch went back to being a sandwich at the desk. Then I was made redundant – or “went freelance”, in the jargon of the trade – and started Working From Home. Could I resist the temptation to revisit the fabled lunches of erstwhile? I could not! The wife was at work. The kids were at the childminders. A trip to the butcher’s netted a big sirloin and a punnet of mushrooms (no chips – I was on a diet), while the oe next door yielded a bottle of well-priced but extremely strong Côtes du Rhône. What a feast!

And how did I feel when I’d demolished all this? Terrible! In the intervening years my system’s resistance to this magnitude of assault had completely evaporated; and one of the more macho elements of the oce liquid lunch was one’s capacity to put in a full afternoon’s work afterwards. That had gone. All I could manage was sleep. Worse, so had the pleasure. A liquid lunch has to be convivial; sneaked alone, it’s no pleasure unless you have a thing for guilt.

So, no more liquid lunches for me. They belong to the 1980s. And, perhaps, to a rather wistful chapter in my memoirs.

450g (1lb) granulated sugar

75g (3oz) butter

150ml (¼pt) milk

170g can evaporated milk

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

100g (4oz) glace cherries, chopped

Makes approx550g (1¼lb)

Place the sugar in a large heavy-based pan with the butter, milk and evaporated milk. Heat gently, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved.

Bring the mixture to the boil, without stirring, and continue to boil until the mixture reaches 116C/240F on a sugar thermometer (see tip). Stir the boiling mixture occasionally to prevent it from sticking.

Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla essence and chopped glace cherries. Beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is sti, grainy and paler in colour.

Quickly pour the mixture into a greased 18cm (7in) square shallow cake tin. Leave until almost set then mark into squares. When completely cold, cut or break into the squares. Store the fudge in an airtight container.

This home-made fudge is a delicious sweet treat that kids will love and is great for a Hallowe’en treat. You can replace the cherries with raisins, chopped stem ginger or chopped nuts.

Cherry Fudge

More Halloween Treats... If you’re planning a Halloween party here’s a few more quick ideas to keep hungry trick or treaters happy...

EYEBALL CUPCAKES - top vanilla sponge cupcakes with a layer of glace icing. Using a tube of red writing icing, pipe lines to resemble veins and place a red cherry in the centre.

SPIDER’S WEB COOKIES - top plain digestive biscuits with a thin layer of black ready-to-roll sugar paste icing. Using a tube of white writing icing, pipe a spider’s web pattern on each topped biscuit. Leave to set.

HUBBLE BUBBLE JELLIES – make up lime and orange flavoured jellies according to the packet instructions. Leave until just beginning to set and then divide the lime jelly between 6 clear plastic cups. Add a few bug-shaped jelly sweets then top with the orange jelly and a few more sweets. Leave until set.

WITCHES BREW – make some red coloured ice cubes by pouring cranberry juice into ice cubes trays then freezing until solid. Pour lemonade into tall glasses and add the ice cubes. Add a couple of jelly sweet snakes to each glass.

Halloween Treat...

TOP TIP - If you don’t have a sugar thermometer, place a jug of very cold water by the hob. After boiling the fudge mixture for about 5 minutes, drop a teaspoonful of the hot syrup into the water. If the syrup forms a ball which you can roll between your fingers then its ready – if not, boil for a further few minutes then test again.

GLOS DIRECTORIES | MOTORING

MINI at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) The MINI brand took to the stage at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) with increasing variety within its ranks and an unparalleled focus on the individualisation of its models. The world’s most important car show played host to the world premiere of the MINI Coupé. And visitors to the event – which took place last month (September 2011) – were able to explore the rest of the MINI model family, not to mention the latest MINI Yours range of products and an attractive array of Original MINI Accessories. The impressively diverse product portfolio presented by MINI once again underlined its status as a maker of premium cars which faithfully express both the unmistakable character of the brand and the personal style of its customers.

The launch of the MINI Coupé sees the British premium small car manufacturer taking the next step in its rigorous model range expansion process. The brand’s fifth model wraps up hallmark MINI qualities in a new and distinctive package. The first two-seater in the current range boasts an even sharper focus on delivering unbeatable fun at the wheel. Powerful engines, a bespoke set-up for the car’s sophisticated suspension and finely-judged adjustments in terms of aerodynamics and weight balance help whisk the legendary go-kart feeling into a new dimension.

The distinctive identity of the MINI Coupé is also reflected in its design. With its sporty, hunkered-down feel and fresh new roof design, the two-seater occupies its very own niche within the model line-up. At the same time, though, familiar MINI exterior and interior design features clearly highlight its membership of the brand family. The fun-filled driving experience and functionality of the new model are geared squarely to driving “two up”, but the MINI Coupé cuts no corners in displaying all the charisma, efficiency and premium quality MINI has brought to the small car segment.

The extra depth to the MINI model range shines the spotlight once again on the brand’s unrivalled potential. Around the world MINI has become a byword for driving fun, agility, expressive design, premium quality and individuality. And having broken new ground in the premium small car segment, MINI is now building its advantage over its rivals. Ten years after the relaunch of the brand and five years since the second generation of the 21st-century MINI hit the roads, its popularity in car markets around the globe continues to grow with the arrival of each new model.

With five models now carrying the MINI badge, the brand has succeeded in meeting the specific needs of various target groups. The luxury of choice created by the variety of models within the MINI family is taken a stage further by the scope for effective customisation that each individual model allows. The brand offers its customers more freedom than any other carmaker to configure their car to their own personal style.

MINI Coupé: world premiere for a more focused go-kart feeling. Two years ago a concept car previewing a two-seater Coupé from the MINI brand turned heads aplenty at the Frankfurt Motor Show. And now that vision of even more sharply focused driving fun has become a reality on the road. The 2011 Frankfurt Show provides the stage for the world premiere of the MINI Coupé. The two-seater will be offered from launch with a choice of four engine variants with outputs ranging from the 90 kW/122 hp of the MINI Cooper Coupé and the MINI Cooper SD Coupé’s 105 kW/143 hp to the 135 kW/184 hp developed by the MINI Cooper S Coupé and the 155 kW/211 hp of the sporting flagship, the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé. In league with these powerful engines, the Coupé’s bespoke suspension set-up, harmonious weight distribution, extremely rigid body and special aerodynamic tweaks – including an extending rear spoiler – help to bring the car’s go-kart feeling even further to the fore.

The MINI Coupé is the brand’s first model to adopt a classical three-box structure with a strikingly stepped rear end. The car’s roof has a standard contrasting paint finish, accentuating its distinctive

design, while the 280-litre luggage compartment behind the high-opening tailgate reveals impressive functionality. Other particularly noteworthy features of the interior include oval recesses in the roof liner, which are specific to the MINI Coupé and emphasise the car’s two-seat design, and the wide through-loading facility linking the cabin and luggage compartment.

MINI Yours: customisation at its most exclusive. The extra breadth in the model range is complemented by the increased scope for owners to customise their cars. For example, the MINI Yours collection of products represents a particularly attractive addition to the options list. MINI Yours comprises a range of exclusive options – designed as the perfect complement to the unmistakable character of the MINI brand – for the exterior and interior design of the MINI Coupé. In addition to unusual paint finishes, trim elements, upholstery variants and interior colours, the MINI Yours range also offers customers stylishly composed equipment packages and limited-edition models.

The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show were also host to the unveiling of the MINI Clubman Hampton, which embodies the inimitable style of MINI Yours in particularly concentrated form. The paintwork and wheels of the MINI Clubman Hampton, as well as its exterior and interior design, and other equipment features chosen specially for it, have been carefully coordinated down to the smallest details to lend a special flavour to both its appearance and the driving experience on board. Currently only one MINI exudes an even more exclusive allure: the MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD. This special-edition take on the three-door MINI was created under the expert eye of the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars design team and is also on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Original MINI Accessories: more freedom for customers to express their personal style. Looking beyond the range of optional equipment available ex-factory, MINI also opens up an extraordinary wealth of possibilities when it comes to configuring owners’ cars to their personal style and requirements. The Original MINI Accessories range gives owners all the tools they need to enjoy the hallmark MINI driving fun in an individually tailored one-off car. The range comprises a constantly expanding selection of products which enhance and accentuate the expressive design, sporting characteristics and functionality of a MINI.

Alongside the familiar customisation options for the exterior, such as roof flags, mirror caps and side indicator surrounds, the Original MINI Accessories presented at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show also include steering wheels, gearshift knobs, interior trim strips and other retro-fit components for the interior. Customers will also find specifically designed transport systems to carry sports equipment safely and comfortably while on the move. Likewise on show is the latest range of accessories from the John Cooper Works brand. These include John Cooper Works tuning products, which further enhance both engine performance and handling, make the car’s aerodynamic properties and exterior design that much more effective, and bring the sensation of the race track to the interior.

Good first cars

by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Ford Ka – from £300Cheap to buy, run and fix and there’s thousands on the road to choose from. Even models with air conditioning and CD players can be had for under a grand, but keep an eye out for rust under the sills, behind the bumpers and around the fuel filler cap. And buy the latest one you can aord.

Fiat Cinquecento – from £400Made famous by TV show The Inbetweeners, this little city car wasn’t Simon’s motor of choice without good reason. It’s extremely cheap to run and insurance won’t be too painful either. Don’t expect much in the way of equipment and remember these Fiats can be a little unreliable, so budget for repairs.

Citroen C1 – from £2,700This Citroen is the sister car of the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo – not much changes apart from the badge. It’s good to drive and being relatively new it’s one of the safest options. However, insurance will be a bit more expensive than others and you’ll be hard pressed to find one with air con. Fuel economy will make up for the lack of equipment, but they are still pricey.

Toyota Yaris – from £750One of the most bulletproof models if you want to avoid running repairs, a Yaris is a sensible choice. They’re roomy inside and if you can stretch to a diesel variant, trips to fuel stations will be relatively infrequent. Insurance costs are surprisingly aordable and it’s a safe option, but prices can reflect that.

Peugeot 106 – from £300They can be picked up for next to nothing and with a choice of engines and trims to suit most budgets, a 106 is a tempting option. Most are a bit basic, but they’re entertaining to drive and reasonably aordable to insure. However, they’re not known for their reliability so try and buy one with service history and have it checked over before handing over your cash.

PASSING your driving test is one of the best feelings in the world – but the joy of finally getting your licence can quickly disappear when it comes to finding a car. Astronomical insurance costs can put many models out of the reach of teenagers, but don’t despair too much – there are options out there.

You need to accept the fact that insurance is going to cost you more than the car, but you can help cut the price by taking a Pass Plus course or asking to be added to your parents’ policy as a named driver. That will mean talking to them first though…

If that sounds too challenging there are new insurance schemes that place a black box in your car to monitor your driving style and charge you accordingly – this can be a great way of cutting premiums.

But what cars make sensible buys? Here, we have scoured the classifieds to hunt down a few options you may want to consider.

Finally, a couple of tips if you’re buying your first car: Always take someone with you who knows what they’re looking at, even – and don’t laugh – if that means your parents. Have the car checked over by a mechanic too – it’s often worth half an hour’s labour in a garage to save you big bills. And for more expensive cars fork out for an HPI check to ensure it’s not stolen (or ask your Gran to pay for it). Happy hunting!

Amazing Autumn Colour is just too tempting... - Pippa Greenwood

Autumn colour has always had the ability to make me go weak at the knees. I love it….just as the temperatures are dropping and there’s too much potential for things to become dull, gloomy and miserable, your garden can develop a new potential – to be positively glowing with fantastic foliage colour. If you’re looking to add some glorious golds, passion-filled purples, ravaging reds, yummy yellows or perhaps some outrageous oranges to your garden, then now is a perfect time to buy those autumn colour plants. Not only is autumn a great time to plant trees and shrubs, but if you buy the plant when it is showing its beautiful autumn colours, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting.

If you want to indulge in a little planting for autumn colour on vertical surfaces such as walls, fences or arbours, there are several plants I’d suggest you consider. Vitis coignetiae – a rampant grower, the heart-shaped leaves may measure up to 25-30cm across and their splendid scarlet and crimson colours are un-missable. This vine can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports. The colours tend to be especially good if the soil is miserable or the root run restricted. Parthenocissus quinquefolia – more commonly known as the Virginia creeper, it’s another sizeable climber, and this also offers a good degree of self-clinging ability, so it can be used to clothe walls where you have not fixed up a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange

and red. It can grow taller than you want, so will ultimately need trimming if, say you grow it on a house wall, or else it will move on to the roof.

Parthenocissus henryana – a relative of the Virginia creeper, but much morerestrained. For much of the year its divided leaves are a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veining. In autumn they turn rich shades of red. If you are after a shrub or two then there is an even wider range to choose from. Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a gorgeous smallish to medium-sized shrub that is covered with scented creamy white spiky flower clusters early in the year, before the leaves appear. Pale green for much of the year the foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-free soil.

Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as the snowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a large shrub or small tree and produces lovely whitish blossom in spring (that is much longer lasting than the flowering cherries!) In spring the new leaves are a coppery colour, changing to bright green and then come the autumn it is one huge mass of fiery colours. Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn show stoppers, and for smaller gardens you find it hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows depending on exactly which one you have planted. The Japanese maples also do well in large tubs, perfect for a sheltered back yard. Cotinus or smoke bush is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves that come in shades of green, pinkish–orange or purple. Come the autumn they produce a bright

Pyracantha - FirethornPyracantha is an easy to grow, low maintenance, evergreen shrub that can be trained up walls, around doors or used to create a hedge. It’s the classic ‘home security’ plant as it is dense and extremely spiky. As a bonus, it’s a great way of attracting birds to your garden. The plant provides shelter for nesting and roosting birds as well as winter food.

Fragrant white flowers bloom between May and June which attract a myriad of bees. By autumn these flowers turn into a showy mass of red, orange or yellow berries depending on the variety. Birds feast on these berries during the difficult winter months.

Pyracantha prefers a well-drained healthy soil in full sun or partial shade, but will thrive in most soils. Good quality soil and lots of sunshine increases the berry production. Pyracantha is fully hardy and grows to around 3m. It can be kept in check by pruning but take care as the thorns are vicious. Wear heavy gloves. New flowers are produced on the previous year’s growth so ensure you don’t remove that. It’s easier to prune while the plant is in flower so you cut back to the existing flowers.

display to be proud of. The fluffy seed heads that are left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke….perfect with the bonfire effect of the leaves. It is a great time to choose plants for autumn colour, but if you’re not sure what’s available, treat yourself to a visit to an open garden, arboretum or park, and note down the names of what you like best. Planting at this time of year works well, but if your garden soil is waterlogged now, then wait a week or more until it is in better condition. If the soil is on the dry side, it will still need watering well, and the soil around the roots will need to be kept moist. Always check the ultimate or potential height and spread of trees or shrubs you’re considering…..there’s no use planting something that will out-grow its space in a couple of years time. Then sit back and enjoy your own bit of autumnal magic!

Garden LandscapingNow is the ideal time to make any major garden improvements you wish to make. Autumn and winter are prime planting times for trees, shrubs, hedges and bulbs. It gives the plants time to establish before the growing season commences in spring. Maybe you want to dig a pond, build a deck or patio or just fancy a change of scene. Find ideas from gardening magazines, TV programmes, and your neighbours. Alternatively, you can employ a professional garden landscaping service. They are especially useful if you have major design changes you wish to make or are unable to do the work yourself. Landscaping and garden design services can come up with ideas you hadn’t thought of, advise on the best plants for your garden and source hard landscaping items easily.Set yourself a budget and stick to it. It’s very easy to become carried away. Ensure any plants you choose are suitable for your area and soil otherwise

you could be very disappointed.Don’t forget your front garden either. This is the first thing

visitors and passers-by see and a well-tended and beautifully designed front garden creates a positive impression.

The heat is onOne of the simplest ways to heat a room is an electric heater. These come in three flavours: fan heaters such as the Dimplex DXGLO2, which blow air over a heating element to blast you with warm air; convection heaters such as the Delonghi HCM2020, which have less powerful fans (or no fan at all) and waft rather than blast warm air; and oil heaters such as the Pifco PE136, which are filled with oil that’s heated to create an eect very like a traditional central heating radiator.

There are several advantages to such radiators: they’re portable, they’re very cheap to buy and they’re widely available. However, some are so low-powered they’re eectively useless. A 400W panel heater will struggle to keep even a small room warm and if you buy one without a timer you’ll have to remember to turn it on/o manually. Many models do include integrated timers, but be careful if you’re putting one near a bed: the timer mechanisms can be noisy. For bedtime, an electric blanket may be a better choice: even at their peak they only draw several hundred watts of energy.

Fan heaters can be extremely noisy, and

heaters of all kinds can be expensive to run: at the time

of writing, the cost of running a 2kW heater on our current

electricity tari would be 22p-52p

per hour. Over a long winter that soon adds up, so it’s important to use the right size of heater for your room and to cut the thermostat so you’re not using more energy than you need. The same applies to gas heaters: check the heater’s energy use in kilowatts - a 4.2 kilowatt gas heater will go through four times more gas than a 1 kilowatt model.

One way to cut the cost of energy is to avoid heating things that don’t need heated. Traditional heaters heat the air in an entire room, so you’re eectively paying to heat bits where you aren’t sitting. That’s not really a problem inside your house, but if you want to be toasty while you’re working in the garage or any other large, open area you don’t want to spend money heating

the entire room. For more selective heating jobs, infra-red heaters such as Dimplex’s IRX50n are a better idea - although they heat a very narrow area, so positioning is crucial. Such heaters only heat what they’re pointing at, not the air around them, so they can potentially save

money but if you’re outside

their eective range, you don’t get any heat at all. Once

again wattage is crucial here:

a 500W model will be fine for a working area, but larger spaces will require more powerful heating.

Another option is to beef up the heating you already have. A radiator booster can cut a few hundred pounds from your electricity bill, and it’s a deceptively simple bit of kit: a long fan sits on top of your radiator and circulates the warming air through your room. That

means the room feels warmer

faster, and you can turn o the heating more quickly. They

cost £19.99 from USwitch.com,

who say the booster will cost “around 13p for 500 hours use.”

There’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter – and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as ecient and attractive as possible.

First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room – despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy eciency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of dierence.

If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-ecient.

The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge attention-grabbers: traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-in-the-wall or

When long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer…

centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/logpile).

Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving o enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss – especially on an outside wall – by fitting tin foil (or special radiator reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not eective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They’re not cheap, but they are both practical and good-looking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.

Home SecurityBurglars are opportunists who target empty homes when you are out of the way. Prevent the trauma of your home being burgled in the busy run-up to Christmas with these few simple tips.

Keep all doors and windows closed and securely locked while you’re out. Most burglars enter out of sight from the street, so make side and back doors as well as windows very secure. Speak to a locksmith about the latest security options.

Fences and hedges are your first line of defence and should act as an effective barrier while still allowing your home to be visible from the street. Protect the entrance to your property too. If a gate isn’t practical, cover pathways with gravel. The sound of footsteps on gravel is often enough to prevent thieves from continuing.

Motion activated lighting and well lit paths and driveways are a must. Outdoor security lighting is cheap to install and low energy light bulbs keep running costs

down. Install a burglar alarm. As well as protecting your property, an alarm usually lowers your insurance premiums.

By following these simple steps you can protect your home and belongings. But just in case you’re unlucky, do make sure you’re fully insured.

GLOS DIRECTORIES | FUN STUFF

Many of our pets find Fireworks very scary, but there is a lot we can do to ease their anxiety. It is important to try very hard

as pet owners to keep calm, as seeing you act normally will really help your cat or dog feel more settled. There are many small changes we can make to help our pets cope, generally we can do a lot to improve matters, educating and teaching our owners about animal behaviour. There are also products such as, Feliway and Adaptil (DAP). These are synthetic copies of the pheromones used by cats and dogs naturally to mark their territories as safe and secure. They help animals cope in stressful situations. It is best to pop into your Vets a good six weeks prior to firework time to discuss your pets individual phobia and organise any behavioural modification or medications they may need to help.

Top Tips for Cats and Dogs Keep your cat indoors – try ‘Feliway’ spray to

help reduce unwanted behaviour. If your cat hides, leave her alone and do not try

and coax her out. A ‘bolt hole’ will be where she feels most secure, and must be allowed access.

Use a ‘Feliway’ diffuser in the room where your cat spends most of her time. Plug in prior to any fireworks if you can!

Have a litter tray indoors for your cat before firework season starts – minimises stress if she is already used to it.

Keep your dog indoors when you expect Fireworks.

Ensure you walk your dog early (and keep him on the lead) – before any fireworks start.

If your dog has a hiding place – leave him alone. Being in his ‘bolt hole’ will help him feel more secure. Try a DAP diffuser.

Veterinary advice With Vet Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens Clinic

Scary Season! How to help your pets cope with the fireworks season.

Prepare a den for your dog, so he has somewhere to hide. Encourage use with treats/toys.

Make sure your pet is microchipped – if they do escape, frightened animals are more likely to get lost.

Draw curtains and keep the radio/TV on to help mask noise.

Ignore any fearful behaviour and try not to comfort your pet. More importantly do not pick them up/restrain them. Cats are best left to cope alone. It all sounds a bit mean – but your pet will pick up on your anxiety and this will make the problem worse. Fussing/comforting a frightened pet (especially dogs) will only reward and encourages this behaviour.

Do not punish you pet – this only reinforces their fear. Try not go out, stay calm and act normally If you are worried, or your pet takes a long time

to recover from the firework period – talk to your vet.Wishing you and your pet well - Brad
