600 tpd Waste-to-energy facility expansion | Veolia ES (Covanta)
Project description Veolia ES (now Covanta) waste-to-energy has experience in retrofitting and carrying out modifications to existing facilities with minimum interruption to incoming waste flows. This expertise enables communities to maintain continuous services to their residents while preserving their investment. When the time came to expand the York County facility Veolia contracted AMEC to execute the detailed design.
Scope of Work
AMEC was contracted to provide detailed engineering, ground fault study, and a coordination study for the 600 t/d waste-to-energy facility expansion. This project included a new boiler/grate (horizontal unit), APC, 25 MW turbine generator, deaerator, cooling tower, demineralizer, condenser, step-up transformer, MCC’s, new chemical feed system, and DCS.

Wood-fired Cogeneration Plant | Kvaerner EnviroPower
Project description The Brooklyn Energy Centre supplies 24 MW of electric power to Nova Scotia Power and 150,000 lbs/hour of process steam to nearby Bowater Mersey Paper Company. The plant burns wood waste in a bubbling fluidized bed boiler and three stages of feedwater heating are employed to increase cycle efficiency. The plant is also equipped with two heavy oil-fired package boilers to deliver as much as 325,000 lbs/hour of process steam in a standby mode.
Scope of Work
AMEC designed the facility using its 3-D modelling system (PASCE). This allowed the complex facility, consisting of intricate piping and ductwork, to be fit into an optimal building size with reduced interferences during construction.
The control system was staged and tested in AMEC’s Atlanta office prior to shipment to the site, resulting in a smoother, more trouble-free start-up. AMEC also provided electrical design coordination of the plantutility interface, including step-up transformer design, short circuit, load flow analysis and protective relaying design.
Project Highlights
3-D PASCE modelling reduced design, routing and installation errors through interference checks.
Extensive power experience of the design team produced a quality plant design at a minimum cost.
Biomass 14
Wood-fired Cogeneration Plant | Biomass Gas & Electric
Project description AMEC worked with Biomass Gas and Electric (BG&E) to integrate the FERCo Silva Gas Gasification Process into both a Rankine and Combined Cycle Power Plant. The FERCo Silva Gas gasification process gasifiers biomass by volatilizing the biomass in the absence of oxygen, to produce a medium BTU gas.
Scope of Work
AMEC provided conceptual process and balance of plant engineering to integrate this process into power plants. GateCycle software was used to perform cycle design; heat exchangers were sized to reduce sensible heat in the flue gas and syngas. This heat was combined and optimized with heat produced in a fired boiler, firing syngas, to produce an efficient power plant.
In addition, the process was also conceptually engineered to feed a gas turbine, exhausting into a HRSG and producing steam for a steam turbine generator, resulting in a high efficiency combined cycle power plant.
AMEC’s work included the conceptual engineering of all process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and environmental aspects of the plant. A capital cost of the project was produced.
