The Solution

2006 - An Idea

Avid campers frustrated by the need for petroleum fuel canisters, co-founders Jonathan & Alec start a weekend project: trying to create a more efficient wood-burning camping stove.

In a mushroom cloud of flames, the BioLite CampStove proof of concept was born.

BioLite enters its newest product vertical with the launch of the NanoGrid.

The off-grid lighting and charging system is BioLite’s first product to be sold in both the outdoor recreation and emerging markets.

2008 - Building a Stove

After months of testing, the first generation CampStove prototype is completed.

2012 - CampStove Launches

CampStove ships for the first time. A few months later, Hurricane Sandy hits. BioLite engineers set up charging stations around the city and deliver CampStoves to relief workers.

2009 - A Parallel Business Plan

CampStove prototype wins Cleanest Cookstove of the Year, leading to the birth of the HomeStove and bifurcating the business plan to include emerging markets.

2011 - Disruptive Innovation

BioLite receives Series A funding, becoming the first venture-backed business developing clean cooking solutions for the emerging markets.

2013 - HomeStove Launches

Large-scale commercial sales of the HomeStove begin in India, Ghana, and Uganda.

The BioLite HomeStove is a low-cost, biomass cookstove that drastically reduces emissions while generating electricity. Using a market-based approach to poverty alleviation, the HomeStove is purchased by end users in India and sub-Saharan Africa and typically pays for itself in 6-9 months based on fuel savings.
