Telematics
JDLink is a telematics solution that collects machine information and
transfers it to your computer or mobile device. JDLink Select can be
installed on all makes while JDLink Ultimate is available on John Deere
machines.
What information can JDLink Ultimate offer the customer?
– Alerts (DTC, maintenance, curfew, geofence)
– Machine Utilization Data
– Machine Location
– Machine Hours
– Maintenance Items
– Security
– Remote Service Support
Let’s look at some of these in more detail

Machine Data
How can owners use machine data to add value to their business?
–Optimizing machine usage
• AutoTrac • IVT Mode
• PTO
–Machine Logistics
–Fuel usage analysis
–Better purchase decisions
–Establish a true operating cost
for budget
–Machine state analysis
• Idle

Auto Mode v. Manual Mode Operating Costs
• Supplement the value of monitoring auto v. manual mode in JDLink with Nebraska Tractor Test Lab Reports
|Beyond Precision Ag – Emerging Technologies | January 2013!11
Auto v. Manual Mode Operating Costs
1. Determine lb/hr • Manual Mode: 0.521 lb/hp - hr * 148.68 hp = 77.462 lb/hr • Auto Mode: 0.445 lb/hp - hr * 148.63 hp = 66.140 lb/hr
2. Determine gal/hr used • M: 77.462 lb/hr /(1/7.075 lb/gal= 0.141 gal/lb) = 10.922 gal/hr • A: 66.140 lb/hr /(1/7.075 lb/gal= 0.141 gal/lb) = 9.326 gal/hr
3. Determine fuel used per season • M: 10.922 gal/hr * 160 hr = 1747.520 gal • A: 9.326 gal/hr * 160 hr = 1492.160 gal
4. Determine cost savings by using auto mode • M: 1747.520 gal * $4.00/gal = $6990.08 • A: 1492.160 gal * $4.00/gal = $5968.64 • Used Arbitrary Fuel Price/Gal

Taking Away Unnecessary Hours from Warranty
Scenario
Customer owns a 8360R in his custom fleet of tractors. On average the tractor runs for 1250 hours annually, and approximately 30% (375) of those are idle time hours. The customer notices at the end of the second year, that the tractor’s warranty* will be up in 500 hours and he needs to think about trading it in soon.
*8360R’s warranty is PowerGard 3-3-x, 3 years or 3000 hours, whichever comes first.

Taking Away Unnecessary Hours from Warranty
If the customer would have reduced idle time by 10%:
3000 hrs x 30% = 900 hours in idle
3000 hrs x 20% = 600 hours in idle
Customer would add 300 more working hours to warranty rather than using up that warranty time in idle mode.
Consideration: How much more profit could that customer gain from having that machine use 300 more working hours?

Challenge:
A customer is working with a John Deere 7230R tractor wants ensure that he is efficiently using his machine.
Solutions:
JDLink can be used to retrieve machine data and optimize usage
Objectives:
Review JDLink data to understand the following:
1. How the tractor is being used
2. If the tractor is sized properly for the application
3. Review fuel consumption data for budgeting purposes

Remote Support Machine Optimization
Remote Display Access
– Telematics also enables remote access to displays in the cab
– Remote access is useful for supporting setup in the field or
troubleshooting an issue
– The farm manager can offer remote support to their operator
– The dealership can provide remote support to the operator with
their permission
|Beyond Precision Ag – Emerging Technologies | January 2013!16
Machine Control Logistics Optimization
Guidance Technology
– Automatic machine guidance is
well established in the Ag
Industry
– With more advanced technology,
remote control options are now
available
– These tools are reducing operator
stress and increasing productivity
– Machine Sync is a tool that allows
the combine operator to control
the location of the grain cart
– Machine to machine
communication also provides bin
level to the grain cart operator

Ag Decision Support Ag Decision Support
Mobile Device Applications
– Portable devices allow farmers to
take their field maps with them
wherever they go
– These tools allow farmers to
record soil sample locations,
make notes, and use GPS
capabilities to locate points of
interest in the field
– Mobile Farm Manager is one
product that manages field maps
and syncs with Apex farm
management software
|Beyond Precision Ag – Emerging Technologies | January 2013!18
Ag Decision Support
Water management
– Water is key for successful crop
production
– Technology has allowed producers to
monitor soil moisture levels and make
more informed decisions
– Irrigation can be managed
– Plants can be stressed at the proper
time
– John Deere Field Connect is one
product that measures and records soil
moisture level data that can be
accessed over the internet
