T he first time I ever
set foot on an
airplane was way
back in 1972. My
Grandfather Rowell had passed away;
and since Dad, with my brother and
sister in tow, had driven down earlier,
my Mom and I boarded a Southern
Airways Martin 404 at the Columbia
airport for the trip down to Panama
City. We went to gather with the
family to celebrate the life of a man of
whom I knew little, but for whom I
held a great deal of love nonetheless.
I will leave the story of
Grandpa Rowell for another day. For
now let me tell you about the flight.
For those uninitiated, the
Martin 404 was an old forty passenger
two engine prop plane. It was quite
noisy with the propellers spinning
away on both wings with you in the
middle, and to say the flight was
smooth would be to lie. Actually it
ranged somewhere between a flat tire
and rollercoaster most of the time, but
it got you there, as a rule.
On this particular day the
thunderstorms of the South were
apparently having a family reunion,
because from Columbia to Panama City
we did nothing but dodge the things.
Make that, we dodged most of them. I
was thrilled at the time though. You
see, I love a rollercoaster; and to my
young mind, it was a great ride.
All of that changed however,
somewhere over Tifton, Georgia to
the best of my recollection. For it was
there the plane, having zigged when
it should have zagged, skipped over
the top of a thunderhead and
proceeded to drop like a stone over
the other side. As we sped toward the
red clay of Georgia at break neck
speed, it suddenly dawned on me
that I had no control, none
whatsoever. I had foolishly listened
to my mother and handed the reigns
of my life over to some guy I had
never met sitting in the nose of the
plane. I didn’t know his name, his
background, nothing, and yet my
entire future depended upon what he
did in the next few minutes. Boy, did
I feel dumb or what?
In retrospect though, it
appears to me that Southern
Airways had a policy of hiring former
fighter pilots, because with the
strength of Samson and the skill of
Chuck Yeager our pilot regained
control of the plane. Quickly
thereafter, he left our stomachs at
about three thousand feet and
popped that old plane back up to the
top of the clouds just like a cork. I
have loved flying ever since.
Galatians 2:20 reads as
follows:
Gal 2:20
20 I have been crucified with
Christ and I no longer live, but Christ
lives in me.
NIV
To my mind those words
mean that in order for me to truly
follow Christ, I must voluntarily
surrender my independence into the
hands of Christ, just as I unwittingly
surrendered my life into the hands of
that pilot all those years ago. In so
doing I surrender my say-so to Christ
so that His say-so can rule in my life.
The key word here is
voluntarily. No one else can hand
over the reigns of my life to Christ,
except me. Christ is not going to
wrest them from my grasp. Christ is
no tyrant. Christ is a gentle, loving
God who is not looking to conquer
me, but to have me join Him in His
ministry to the world.
In order for this to take
place in my life, I must be willing to
shed the independence that I so prize
and totally yield to the supremacy of
my Lord Jesus Christ. I must no
longer live for my own ideas, for my
own wants, for my own agenda; I
must live totally for Christ.
Complete loyalty to Christ is

what is needed if I truly want my life
to be used for the Kingdom of God.
Without such loyalty, without the
release of my
independence, my
life, while
appearing for all
the world to be
lived for Christ,
will in truth be
nothing more than
a pious charade. I
may appear to be
a man of God; but
in truth, without
surrendering my
independence to
Christ, I will be
nothing but a fraud.
The question I must ask
myself is this: “Am I willing to give it
all to Christ? Am I willing to hand
over all of my dreams, all of my
aspirations, all of my everything so
(Continued from page 1) that I may be used by Christ in
whatever fashion He chooses? Am I
willing to be, ‘… crucified with Christ
…?’ Am I willing to have Christ help
Himself to me?”
On a more personal level, are
you willing to let go of everything for
Christ? Are you willing to let Christ
help Himself to your agenda, your
wants, and your desires? Are you
willing to allow Christ to help himself
to whatever He needs, no matter
what?
Are you, like Paul before
you, willing to “…consider them
rubbish, that you may gain Christ
and be found in him …?” Phil 3:8-9
I pray that you are willing.
For Christ needs men and women
of the Cross, duly crucified with
Him, to carry His message of
forgiveness and salvation to a
world desperately seeking His
touch.
Love,
Pastor Tony

A sincere thank you to all of
my church family for the

means so much to us and we
are so blessed to have a family like you! Thanks to
Pastor Tony, also, for prayer before my surgery. It
meant a lot to me. Sincerely, Diane & Bill Crosby
Dear Theresa & BUMC Sunshine Committee, Thank
you for the beautiful peach lily you sent us at our
new home. It is beautiful, healthy, & blooming huge
flowers! It was a very pleasant surprise and we have
it sitting in front of our fireplace. I especially love
that it is a peace lily and I think it brings that
blessing from Beulah to our home. God bless you!

My dearest friends, Thank you all for your
prayers, food, phone calls, cards, and most of all
your love during Gerald’s illness and passing. Beulah
was so much a part of our life and his love for
everyone there. He loved meeting new people and
introducing them to Beulah. Our family mourns but
we have so many wonderful memories. God has been
so good to share this wonderful, loving, Christian
man with us. Please continue to keep us in your
prayers. In Christian love, The Riddle Family
Beulah United Methodist Men, The family of

Beulah Graduates 17 Students!
Beulah Methodist Preschool June 2015
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he
is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
Preschool news
Beulah Methodist Preschool is so proud of all of our students! This year, we are
saying “see you later” to 17 graduates that have completed our program. Most
of these children have been with us since our doors opened as a preschool.
They started in our first 2 year old class, and have excelled through the years of
each level of class. They have learned the Lord’s Prayer, their ABC’s, can sing
Jesus Loves Me in English and in Spanish and even beginning to read. As they
graduate from preschool and become Kindergartners we hope they remember
their years at Beulah Methodist Preschool and continue to follow the same aca-
demic and spiritual path they started right here within the walls of our church.

Beth Moore Simulcast Coming September 12
A live worldwide simulcast event for women called Living Proof Live with Beth Moore will be hosted by
Beulah United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 12, 2015. This event is sponsored by Kenneth
Shuler Schools of Cosmetology and joins women from around the world to encourage a deeper understanding
of the Word of God. Living Proof Live is a fun-filled Bible study, teaching, and worship experience to enrich
the mind, soul, and spirit. Bible teacher Beth Moore brings a fresh
Word from God to each Living Proof Live event - no two are the
same. As she explores the Bible and how it applies to real life,
women will be encouraged by her own experiences as a believer
and will be inspired to magnify and strengthen their own
relationship with God.
Doors open for registration and fellowship at 9:00 a.m. The
simulcast will begin at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at 5:15
p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance/$30 at the door and are available
for purchase at www.beulahunitedmethodistchurch.org via PayPal.
Payment by check will also be accepted and can be mailed to the
church along with the registration form (online and at church). The
ticket price includes access to the event and listening guide; a light Continental breakfast, lunch, and
afternoon snack; and a welcome bag. Seating is limited, so get your tickets early!
REFIT® Master Class Beulah UMC will be hosting a REFIT® Master Class on Thursday, July 30th in the Family Life Center. This class
will be taught by the founders of REFIT, who will be traveling from Texas to visit our area. The class will be from
6:30 until 8:00 and is guaranteed to be lots of fun and a great workout. Whether you currently attend a REFIT®
class or not, all are welcomed to attend the Master Class. The fee is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. You may
register by going online to refitrev.com or by contacting Mary Rowell, if you wish for her to handle your registration.
Please pass the word in the community. We are so blessed to have these highly skilled individuals come to our
church. Let’s make it a great success!
