On February 4th, 2004 our family was blessed with a baby boy. As all parents we were very excited to have a healthy little boy to hold and love. Lisa and I enjoyed many laughs as he grew and interacted with Lauren and Megan (his sisters). Christopher was incredibly energetic and enthusiastic about life. He loved nature, Legos, science, math; you could never satiate his desire to learn.
We were at Disney World on vacation and he began to feel pain in his legs. As the days went on, the pain got worse and we were very concerned for what it could be. A week later, our nightmare began; Christopher was diagnosed with a very aggressive Medulloblastoma brain tumor. On March 7, 2011 the main part of the tumor was removed from his brain stem area; unfortunately we also learned the tumor had metastasized to his spinal column. Christopher started losing control of his legs, bowel and bladder, hands, feet, and in one month’s time couldn’t say any words.
Children’s hospital began treating the tumor with Radiation and Chemotherapy for 6 weeks. The tumor response was immediate with us hearing Christopher speak words a week after beginning treatment. When the first round of treatment was complete, we got to take him home.
It felt so good to have him home again, even though we knew the intense chemo treatment phase was forthcoming. The six months of intensive chemotherapy took its toll resulting in permanent hearing loss and the need for a tracheostomy. As time went on we began to see him work hard to regain his balance and walk with a walker. Throughout the treatment phase he maintained a positive outlook, never complained and went to school when he felt good.
Shortly after surgery Lisa and I noticed he had a connection with Jesus. He said that “He was very close to him.” One of the first days back home, Christopher wanted to go to church. During the service, this seven year old was locked into the Pastor’s sermon and he sang praise songs. We couldn’t help but smile with tears in our eyes, as we watched him through this journey. Christopher was stronger and braver than we were. A quote from Christopher:
“I got through this because I believed in God. You just have to trust and believe in God to get through anything, God can make anything happen.” – Christopher April 2012
In January 2012 Christopher received a clean bill of health, however it was short lived. In April his energy began to decline and we were very worried. We took him for an additional visit to Children’s and the tests showed the cancer returned, this time in his bone marrow, liver, kidney and abdominal cavity.
Christopher continued to make the most of each day playing games with us and his friends, as he was able, until he was called to his heavenly home on June 27, 2012. His smile, positive attitude, hugs, kisses, and his incredible faith in God will always be remembered. Lisa and I are so very proud to have a child who has inspired many to find their faith in God.
Christopher’s dream was to be a scientist to cure cancer. His inspiration has sparked large numbers of generous people to help him reach that goal. It is now our time to carry out his dreams! Thanks to everyone’s generous support we have raised $379,065 to date!
