where great things are always happening!
Welcome to Week 4 Term 2 Monday 15, May 2017
Once again we have a busy week ahead!
This week we have our Stage 1 choir participating in the Armidale Eisteddfod. Stage 1 choir is a new initiative this year and I thank Michelle
Porter and Fiona Clayton for leading this. I popped in to the music room last week while choir was on and was thrilled to see so many
students involved and obviously enjoying themselves.
Additionally our senior choir under the direction of Michelle Porter and accompanied by Tina Townsend will be performing at the Eisteddfod
on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday there are approximately 60 students attending the District Cross Country at UNE.
Year 3 will be visiting Saumarez House on Friday after this excursion was cancelled last term.
Tomorrow afternoon all staff will be involved in a 3hr extended professional learning session on evidence-based pedagogy. They will be
exploring what works best to improve student outcomes and engaging in discussion about school improvement using the School Excellence
Framework as a starting point.
Congratulations to George Schmude who was recently selected in the NW Cricket Team. I am confident that George will
represent Ben Venue well and will be an asset to the team.
Congratulations also to Gun Kitchonwiwat who was a winner in the Harmony Day poster competition. Gun has
been invited to attend an award ceremony at Parliament House in Sydney on Tuesday May 30.
Red Day for Hannah
On Monday 22, May 5T will be hosting “Red Day for Hannah”. The aim of this day is to raise much needed funds for Hannah
and her family. Hannah is currently in Westmead Children’s Hospital after a recent diagnosis of Cardiomyopathy.
A Go Fund Me page has been established for those wishing to donate to the Whitton family

P&C
The P&C meet on the first Wednesday of each month in the staff room. The next meeting will be June 7.
Voluntary School Contributions
Thank you to all of those who have paid their voluntary contributions. As mentioned in previous newsletters, we are
aiming for $10,000 this year with funds raised to go towards purchasing robotics and coding resources, as well as
continuing to update our interactive whiteboards.
Customer Service Feedback
Thank you to parents who have provided email details to participate in this. I do not yet have enough parents interested
in participating. For data to be a valid reflection of our school community I would need at least one hundred parents.
If you would like to be involved and help us improve please fill in the slip below. Your details will be passed
on to the state communications team and you will be sent a link to complete the survey.

AROUND THE CLASSROOM
Kindergarten Bilbies (KB) have quickly settled back into
their classroom and school routines. They have also
enjoyed welcoming our new classmate, Corey to Ben
Venue Public School. All students have made great efforts
to be organised and ready for each day and have been
very excited to earn raffle tickets to go into our class box
for displaying the skills and behaviours from our ‘You Can
Do It’ program. Congratulations to Hazel and Liam who
have been our ‘Stars of the Week’ so far this term.
In Science lessons with Mrs Wilson,
students are learning about the
weather. Students are actively
involved in observing the
characteristics of daily weather and
discussing how weather influences
what we wear and the things we can
do. During literacy activities, we have been writing and
drawing about the weather features we can see each day.
In Geography, students have started learning about the
importance of the places where people live and belong
and how we can show these places on a pictorial map. We
have used Google Maps to look at map features and to
view our classroom and school from a birds eye view.
This term, we have several exciting things to look forward
to including a Gymnastics Program at the Armidale
Gymnastics Centre and presenting our first assembly item
at the K-2 assembly. Notes will be sent home soon with
further details of these upcoming activities.
Mrs Bulmer
4D have had a very busy start to Term 2.
We have begun our English unit by
researching the solar system and
creating and presenting PowerPoint
presentations to our peers. We are
reading ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes as
a class and are going to use the ideas and techniques in this
text to create and describe an alien from another planet. This
character will then feature in the short chapter books we will
write as the term progresses.
In our history unit ‘People and Their Beliefs’ we are working in
groups to illustrate and paint scenes from a selection of
Aboriginal Dreamtime stories about the moon. We are using
our YCDI Getting Along key during this activity- working well
with friends, taking turns, listening to others’ points of view,
respecting rules, helping and including others. In the coming
fortnight we will be researching a celebration or special day
from either Australia or around the world and presenting a
short speech to our peers.
At this stage of the year many students are ready for their
supplies to be updated, lead pencils and glue sticks in
particular. Thank you to those parents who have arranged for a
parent-teacher interview. It was lovely to catch up and discuss
your child’s progress and achievement so far this year.
