ADVERTISE Lollapa-loser Brings the Punches from: The Chicago Tribune, by Rosemary R. Sobol Wade Michael Page, the man arrested for killing six worshipers at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin this weekend, expressed much of his white suprema- cist-fueled hatred in a band called End Apathy- and end apathy he did, but not in the way he’d hoped. The days after the massacre have been filled with worldwide vigils for the victims, a hope to educate, and a new recognition of the rage that boils just be- low the surface of the American psyche. Instead of responding to the vicious crime with anger and ha- tred, a unified front of faiths have responded with a resounding sadness and support. from: The Chicago Tribune, by Lisa Black, Michelle Manchir and Jim Jaworski NATIONAL Faiths Come Together Over Tragedy LOCAL The constant blue skies this summer have brought joy to beach goers, but the sentiment isn’t shared by everyone. Next on the list? New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Already getting chummy, Christie closed a recent forum held by Romney in Colora- do. Adding more kindling to the suspicion fire was Christie’s decision to step down from vice-chair- manship of the National Governor’s Association. We’ll keep as close an eye on these two as Christie will on Romney’s health should he become next in line for the presidency. from: The New York Times, by Michael S. Schmidt Chris Christie May Be Romney’s Second in Command One of the most famous guitar companies in the world may be using an illegal secret ingredient to help others make sweet music: wood illegally imported from Madagascar and India. Instead of acting all rock and roll about it and putting up a fight, Gibson resolved its dispute over the guitar ingredients with the U.S. Department of Justice by paying $300,000 in fees, donating $50,000 to the National Wildlife & Fish Foundation, and forfeit- ing $260,000 worth of wood. from: Bloomberg BusinessWeek, by Susan Berfield BUSINESS Gibson Guitar’s Rock Interrupted TECHNOLOGY Despite costing society upwards of $20 billion, a recent report shows email spammers really only make approximately $200 million off of the thou- sands and millions of emails we get about buying forklifts in bulk and sending money to old friends we’ve never met. According to some economists, it really only takes 1 out of every 25,000 people buying something to make a career in spamming worthwhile, but the external annoyance on the rest of the world costs much much more. from: The Atlantic, by Alexis Madrigal Spammers Cost Us More Than They Make HAPPENINGS FOLLOW THE TOP SHEET @thetopsheet facebook.com/thetopsheet The new Chicago marijuana ordinance went into effect on Saturday, much to the celebration of pro- marijuana activists (and anyone with a bit of com- mon sense). Under the new ordinance, individuals caught with 15 grams of pot or less will be issued a ticket of $250-$500, essentially the equivalent of a speeding ticket. Since its inception, 11 tickets have been issued- had the ordinance not been in effect, the 11 offenders would have been arrested. from: Chicago Sun-Times, by Frank Main & Fran Spielman Pot Tickets Start Rolling Out SPORTS Up until recently, a juvenile as young as 13 could be sentenced to mandatory life in prison without parole in the U.S. On June 25th, the Supreme Court ruled the incredibly harsh sentencing un- constitutional, recognizing that children cannot be held to the same standards and responsibilities as adults. Now Pennsylvania, who holds the lead in the number of juvenile lifers with 373 sentenced to life without parole before the age of 18, is trying to figure out how to correct its condemnations. from: The Associated Press, by Mark Scolforo Juvey Lifers No More Worry not readers of 13-page essays and laughers at comics that no one really understands, The New Yorker will now be easier than ever to read. Conde Nast has created an iPhone app for the magazine and is offering this week’s issue for free on top of it all. Still not sold? Luckily The New Yorker com- missioned Lena Dunham and Jon Hamm to create a video and convince you otherwise. from: All Things D, by Peter Kafka The New Yorker iPhone App Exists Now In hopes of continuing the ever-lengthening battle against poverty in Chicago, Gov. Quinn has ex- tended enterprise taxing districts by an additional 25 years. The program was started nearly 30 years ago in hopes of creating new job opportunities in blighted communities by establishing tax incen- tives that would hopefully entice businesses to these areas. The plan inevitably has its critics who believe that the looser restrictions established by the new extension will sabotage the initial intent. from: The Chicago Tribune, by Alejandra Cancino Keeping the Hustle Legit HIPSTER RUNOFF @hipsterrunoff It is a sad day 4 Midwesterners who have been evacuated from#Lollapalooza, forced to return 2 their sad lives’ in constant fear of weather. “Want” created by Brenna McLean “I want to pay $10 for $20 worth of “upscale American fare” including alcohol at Market- Bar in Chicago, IL and I’ll get 10 people to join me.” “Want” created by Sabine Kollwitz “I want to watch just one Olympic event with- out knowing the outcome already, NBC fail.” Ari Melber @AriMelber Michael Jordan used to avoid politics, saying “Republicans buy shoes, too.” Today MJ an- nounces he’ll do a fundraiser for Obama. Lakeview and Andersonville are going to lose a couple parking spots in an experiment that hopes to make the neighborhoods a little more pedestrian- friendly. The pilot program will take over about two spots and replace them with a deck, complete with tables and chairs, enticing passers-by with a place to rest while walking the main drag. Though met with some complaints, the Mayor hopes the program will help local businesses by encouraging people to walk the block. from: The Chicago Tribune, by Blair Kamin No Parking: Chill Zone The Olympics will wind down on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean there’s any shortage of action this week. America’s sweetheart Gabby Douglas fell short during her balance beam routine Tuesday coming in seventh, but another American darling, Aly Raisman, scored the bronze for the beam fol- lowed by a gold for her floor routine. Even with American wins left and right, China still holds the overall medal count as of now, but never fear pa- triots, there are still 21 gold medals in 10 different sports waiting for some American victories before the games come to a close. from: CNN, by Laura Smith-Spark Gold Still Up For Grabs College kids are pretty aggressive when it comes to free stuff, but one 19-year-old took it all way too far when he punched an 11-year-old at Lollapalooza because he wanted her free beach ball. After the girl’s mother jokingly said she was going to charge $50 for the souvenir, the awful teenager who was wearing a three-day wristband most likely worth around $200 replied, “I’m a college student. Does it look like I have money?” and punched the 11-year-old in the stomach. The teenager was taken into custody and charged with battery and assault. Also a quick Google search reveals some pretty terrible DJ work by the puncher, which certainly isn’t helping his case.
