I remember walking into the conference room and looking for my teammates. We had meet multiple times before, through virtual meetings using web cameras, but this was the first time we would meet in person. Launch weekend for the Global Business Project, commonly referred to as GBP, is an in-person kick-off event, for students enrolled at the University of North Carolina and partner universities. The Global Business Project, led by Professor Paul Friga, is an experiential learning consultant project. Based on skills and interests, students are grouped together to collaborate, synthesize and develop solutions for an issue challenging a company. The company we are developing solutions for is Li & Fung, a global supply chain company, headquartered in Hong Kong. Nancy Trieu and Matt Ogle are our team leaders. Jim Van Ness, Larry Zeng, Greg Morrissey, and I, Erica LeBlanc, are students at The University of North Carolina. What makes the GBP program especially unique is a team member from The University of Hong Kong Business School, Mazing Hu. Our team is coached and mentored by faculty advisor and Professor of the Practice David Jacobson. Most of the team met at the University of North Carolina at the end of January to discuss the framework, which we will apply to develop a solution for Li & Fung. Our team was fortunate to have employees of Li & Fung attend the kick-off event in Chapel Hill. The kick-off event was informative, through panel discussions and classroom sessions and small breakout discussions. More importantly, it gave us time as a team to bond. Paul Friga’s McKinsey based methodology of TEAM FOCUS was put to the test early on as we came together as a group. One interesting exercise, we did as a team was to build a Lego helicopter. The catch? In instructions were not provided. Only one team member at a time, could look at a fully complete model at the front of the room, then walk back to the table and describe what the helicopter looked like. Was this challenging? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. But how did the exercise relate to consulting for a company with a real-life challenge? The exercise was a test to see how well we could communicate the realities of a situation when all team members may not be present, yet need to be involved in delivering a solution. What made this particular exercise relevant was the invitation to travel to the Li & Fung offices in Hong Kong and meet with Li & Fung employees, before the final in-country presentation. Due to the timeframe of the request, some of our classmates would not be able to attend. Therefore, the Lego exercise was a dry run of what we might expect as a team when only a few of us would be at the Li & Fung office and would have to report back to the entire team.

Greetings from Hong Kong! One thing you learn quickly as a UNC Global Business Project (GBP) student, is to collaborate with the client early and often. We were invited by Li & Fung to visit their headquarters, before the final presentation, for in-country research and met with employees to learn more about daily business operations. Although only part of the team was able to make the first trip, Larry, Greg, David and I made the most of the trip, by starting off getting adjusted to the time zone difference with a traditional Canton Dim Sum. For a week, we experienced the life of living and working in Hong Kong. We kept to a traditional schedule of working 9am- 5pm. At the start of every meeting we did a formal business card exchange with every individual we met—regardless of title, or role. Receiving a business card with both hands and presenting your business card with both hands, is a must when doing business in Hong Kong. Failure to do participate in a business card exchange is a failure of the meeting. While originally scheduled to meet with some executives for an hour each, the interviews all ran long—to at least an hour and a half each. All of the executives were extremely engaged with the team and were very generous with their time. We each had several pages of notes to comb through for each of the interviews. However, to keep up with our GBP project we dedicated our evening to discussing our findings and hypothesis. The discussions about the project struck a balance of new insights and iterations of current hypothesis. Each day we worked well into the night, providing daily updates to the team in the US. By the end of the week, each of us had completely filled notebooks with our research findings. Although the days were long, it was energizing to work alongside my classmates. For our last night, we went out in trendy Lan Kwai Fong culture district and caught up with a few contacts we met during the week. It was an incredible experience, and I’m looking forward to the next in-country visit to present our final presentation.
