Matthew 8:5-13

5 WHEN JESUS HAD ENTERED CAPERNAUM, A CENTURION CAME TO HIM, ASKING FOR HELP. 6 “LORD,”

HE SAID, “MY SERVANT LIES AT HOME PARALYZED, SUFFERING TERRIBLY.”

7 JESUS SAID TO HIM, “SHALL I COME AND HEAL HIM?”

8 THE CENTURION REPLIED, “LORD, I DO NOT DESERVE TO HAVE YOU COME UNDER MY ROOF. BUT JUST SAY

THE WORD, AND MY SERVANT WILL BE HEALED. 9 FOR I MYSELF AM A MAN UNDER AUTHORITY, WITH SOLDIERS UNDER ME. I TELL THIS ONE, ‘GO,’ AND HE GOES; AND

THAT ONE, ‘COME,’ AND HE COMES. I SAY TO MY SERVANT, ‘DO THIS,’ AND HE DOES IT.”

10 WHEN JESUS HEARD THIS, HE WAS AMAZED AND SAID TO THOSE FOLLOWING HIM, “TRULY I TELL YOU, I

HAVE NOT FOUND ANYONE IN ISRAEL WITH SUCH GREAT FAITH. 11 I SAY TO YOU THAT MANY WILL COME FROM

THE EAST AND THE WEST, AND WILL TAKE THEIR PLACES AT THE FEAST WITH ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. 12 BUT THE

SUBJECTS OF THE KINGDOM WILL BE THROWN OUTSIDE, INTO THE DARKNESS, WHERE THERE WILL BE WEEPING

AND GNASHING OF TEETH.”

13 THEN JESUS SAID TO THE CENTURION, “GO! LET IT BE DONE JUST AS YOU BELIEVED IT WOULD.” AND HIS

SERVANT WAS HEALED AT THAT MOMENT.

NOTEWORTHY PARTS OF THE STORY

• Jesus offered to come and heal the sick

• The centurion didn't feel worthy of such attention

• The centurion believes he can do whatever Jesus would instruct him to do to heal the sick

• Jesus was amazed

Page 4: Before conference with parents

It's an ANALOGY

• Jesus - teacher; centurion - parent; sick - student

• Important assumptions of the analogy

• Something can be done to help the sick person

• The bible left a lot for our imagination

Page 5: Before conference with parents

8 THE CENTURION REPLIED, “LORD, I DO NOT DESERVE TO HAVE YOU COME UNDER MY

ROOF. BUT JUST SAY THE WORD, AND MY SERVANT WILL

BE HEALED. 9 FOR I MYSELF AM A MAN UNDER AUTHORITY, WITH SOLDIERS UNDER ME. I TELL THIS ONE, ‘GO,’ AND HE

GOES; AND THAT ONE, ‘COME,’ AND HE COMES. I SAY TO MY SERVANT, ‘DO THIS,’ AND HE

DOES IT.”

LORD, YOU DON'T HAVE

TO COME, BUT TELL ME

WHAT HAS TO BE DONE, PLEASE BE SPECIFIC.

• In a lesser words:

Page 7: Before conference with parents

• How does this story relates to us, stakeholders of the school

• Jesus is a teacher

• The centurion has authority over the one who is sick (parent)

• Somebody is in trouble (student)

REALITY CHECKHOW DO WE RESPOND TO THE

QUESTION "WHY DID MY CHILD GOT A LOW GRADE THIS QUARTER?"

Page 9: Before conference with parents

FILL IN THE BLANKS• He/she got low in ____________(assignment, quizzes, tests, projects, etc)

• He/she got ____ (low grade) in ______(assignment, quizzes, tests, projects, etc).

• He/she was not able to submit his/her ______(assignment, projects etc)

• He/she does not recite in class.

• He/she missed a lot of classroom activities (tardiness / absences)

• He/she is easily distracted by other activities and has no focus.

• He/she is having a hard time in math? (Entire subject?!?!?)

Teachers surely used the below listed script

Page 10: Before conference with parents

THERE WERE PROBLEMS IN THOSE SCRIPT

1.They are in the past, and as of now nothing can be done to alter them (stalemate)

2.They do not give hints on what can be done to improve the child's performance (hopelessness)

3.They push parents to jump into other things than the real problems of their children in the subject and inspire animosity between parents and their children and ultimately between the teacher and the students (misleading)

Page 11: Before conference with parents

BREAKING DOWN THE QUESTION

• How did they get such a low grade

• Is there something they could do to improve the grade (in the next grading period, underlying question)

What do they really want to know?

"WHY DID MY CHILD GOT A LOW GRADE THIS QUARTER?"

Page 12: Before conference with parents

• We have to address the real problems of the students in the subject

• We should not mislead the parents from the real problems

• There should be hope/salvation for the student

Page 13: Before conference with parents

THE REAL PROBLEMS• They got low score because they lack certain competencies (i.e. does not follow EMDAS, formula is not memorized, poor reading habits, poor recall on dates and names, can't shoot the ball)

• They did not pass their assignments/projects because _________. (They lack materials, they weren't managing their time properly, certain competencies are not met)

• She could not recite in class because ____________. (S/he was hungry all the time, distracted by the constant beeping of cellphone, was not able to get enough sleep)

Page 14: Before conference with parents

WHAT WAS LACKING• Did we evaluate the test results of the student and knew exactly what they were missing in the subject? (competencies being measured in the quiz, or exam)

• Did we ask the students why didn't they pass their requirements despite they are expected to do so and inform their parents about their reason? (Did we remind them that they still has to submit, that they still have to comply; underlying lesson: obedience, resourcefulness)

• Did we ask why do they come late in our school?

SUGGESTIONS1.Stay on your subject

1.Keep the problem in your subject, the competencies that the students are lacking for having a low grade (focus)

2.Don't encourage parents to think that other activities of their child affects their low grade in your subject (love)

2.Suggest supplementary activities that are related to your subject, especially to enhance those competencies that the students is having difficulties (hope)

3.Provide them with upcoming topics and their competencies (moving forward)

4.Keep the parents aware of the troubles their children are into in your subjects (preventive measure)

Page 16: Before conference with parents

THE TEACHER IS THE EXPERT (MESSIAH)

• This is not a new idea/concept

• Imagination and creativity play a very important role in this particular situation

• The teacher is the expert (knows exactly what to do inline with this suggestion)
