Beets Hospitality Group: Learn how one customer combined business and sustainability success.
Sustainability that makes sense and saved dollars
Melody O’Shea, COO, Beets Hospitality Group and Ryan Porter from PG&E
“I’ve always had an interest in sustainability, but anything I do for our
business first needs to make financial sense.”
- Melody O’Shea, COO, Beets Hospitality Group.
Like many businesses, Beets Hospitality Group—
an event and catering company in the picturesque
Livermore Valley Wine Country—knows that
economics is a driving factor in making business
decisions. Beets had thought about investing in
energy-saving equipment for their venues, Palm
Event Center in the Vineyard and Casa Real at Ruby
Hill Winery, but it hadn’t made sense until they
talked to HVAC specialists, Marina Mechanical*
Together, they discovered heating, ventilation and
air conditioning (HVAC) solutions for the Palm Event
Center that had the technology to help Beets improve
their sustainability and be a better business.
“There are a lot of challenges running a business.
We knew we wanted to upgrade our HVAC system,
but until we could find the time and money we
learned to deal with those challenges.”
Tyler Giovanetti, Property & Inventory Manager,
Beets Hospitality Group.

Making Upgrades Financially Feasible with Energy Efficiency Financing
Marina Mechanical, a member of the PG&E Trade
Professional Alliance, provided solutions centered on
enhancing Beets’ HVAC demand controlled ventilation:
Advanced Digital Economizers (ADEC), Carbon dioxide
controls (CO2) and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
These upgrades addressed nagging issues Beets had
been dealing with—hot and cold spots, cooling units
freezing up, and excessive noise—that too frequently had
Property and Inventory Manager, Tyler Giovanetti, up on
the roof to perform maintenance.
With the help of Elizabeth Nushwat and Ryan Porter,
their PG&E Customer Relationship Managers, Beets was
able to take advantage of a no-cost energy assessment,
rebates, and Energy Efficiency Financing to bring these
upgrades to the Palm Event Center with the lowest
impact to their bottom line.
Palm Event Center Savings by the Numbers
Working together, the Carbon
Dioxide Controls monitored CO2
levels and the Advanced Digital
Economizer control opened the
economizer damper to pull in fresh
outside air as needed. That means
when hundreds of people are
dancing, they’re doing so in comfort.
The HVAC solution has a virtual
desktop and mobile dashboard
that allows Beets’s staff to easily
adjust the settings from anywhere
and also make updates based on
upcoming weather forecasts.
The demand controlled
ventilation technology maintained
the ideal temperature for
different rooms, so Beets could
manage the comfort of cooks
in the kitchen and brides in the
bridal suites alike.
CONSISTENT COMFORT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR SIMPLE MAINTENANCE ADJUSTMENTS
The mobile dashboard allows the Beet’s staff to quicky make adjustments remotely.
Tyler can adjust the demand control ventilation without having to leave his desk.
Solutions that impact guest experience “We’ve been truly surprised and delighted by the results.”
- Melody O’Shea, COO, Beets Hospitality Group.
The HVAC technology was not only an energy effecient solution that made
financial sense, but it also had other unexpected benefits:
Opening the economizer just the right amount to pull in air from outside.

Birds-eye view of Casa Real
Due to the enormous success Beets Hospitality Group experienced at The
Palm Event Center, they quickly decided to repeat the process and do the
same upgrades at Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery, their sister property.
Benefits that inspire action
“I’ve been so impressed just how
well everything has worked between
all of us. We can’t wait to get started
on the next project.” -Melody O’Shea, COO, Beets Hospitality Group.
Discovering lasting partnershipsThe success and surprising simplicity of the work at both locations has inspired
Beets to consider further improvements. Next up, they’ll look to complete an 800
lamp LED lighting upgrade, and PG&E will be there to help them.
