    BUSINESS IN CALGARY

    The next generation of Calgarys

leaders are taking charge for social

change, with a little help from theUnited Ways BeCause campaign. For

many, money is the first thing that

comes to mind when discussing giving

back to the community. Money, how-

ever, is only one way people can help

    make Calgary a better place.

    BeCause is an ongoing campaign

with the goal of engaging Calgarys

    young professionals with the hope

that this next generations of movers

and shakers will use their energy, time

and influence for the betterment of

Calgary as a whole. There is nothing like United Way

and BeCause in Calgary to make a

    difference, see amazing work done

in the community and see Calgarians

    truly uniting toward positive social

    change, says Rhiannon MacDonnell,

co-chair of the BeCause campaign. I

get excited just thinking about it.

    The army of BeCause ambassadors

    work at companies throughout Calgary

and are leading the way in getting their

    colleagues, friends and family involved

    with United Ways BeCause initiative.

    The demographic BeCause is focusing

on is between 23 to 35 years of age.

    The recently launched initiative hopes

    to educate and engage

    Calgarys largest demo-

    graphic on how to donate,

    how to volunteer and how

    to participate.

    Calgary is Canadas

    youngest city, says co-

    chair Ryan Jennings. So

    weve created BeCause to

    be the ultimate resource

    for that next generation

of leaders to find out how

    to get involved. Statistics

    show that the majority

    of donating, volunteer-

    ing and participation are

    done by a small minority

    of people; were here to

    change that!Since the BeCause kick-

off in early September, the campaign

and its volunteers have worked tire-

lessly to put on important events that

    both educated local young profession-

als and put the word out that BeCause

is an initiative that truly wants to

    make an impact in Calgary.

Social change starts at an indi-

vidual level, whether its voicing my

    opinion or raising awareness about

    important social issues, says Ming

Ko, a BeCause ambassador. In November, the BeCause team put

on its first Black and Red Bash at The

Marquee Room. A first of its kind,

the event increased awareness of the

    BeCause initiatives. Along with fun

events like the Black and Red Bash,

    BeCause was also behind organizing

Living on the Edge Poverty Simula-

tions and the 2010 Timeraiser where

instead of money, attendees bid volun-

teer hours for local art. The momentum

will feed into 2011 with more events

    scheduled, including the 2011 Spirits

of Gold Breakfast on Feb. 16 that will

be held at the BMO Centre.
