Now ANA looks to India with SpiceJet, Go stake talksEtihad stake in Jet Airways ‘as good as done’; could step up to 49% share

Indian low-cost carrier Spice-Jet could be the next to receive an influx of foreign cash after it emerged that Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) has held talks with both it and rival carrier GoAir over a stake purchase, according to a report in the Times of India.

If confirmed, the move will make ANA one of half a dozen foreign carriers known to have looked seri-ously at investing in Indian compa-nies in the six months since own-ership rules were relaxed, allowing foreign airlines to acquire up to 49% stakes in domestic carriers.

Etihad’s offer to buy a 24% stake in Jet Airways is expected to be confirmed within days. The pur-chase, understood to be worth some 16bn rupees ($300m), valu-

Boeing 737 program starts building at higher production rate

Boeing began assembly of the first Next-Generation 737 to be built at the rate of 38 air-planes per month. Over the past two years, production of the 737 has risen more than 20%, from 31.5 to 38 airplanes a month. In 2014, the rate will go up again to 42 airplanes a month. Today mechanics completed loading initial parts of the spars – internal support structures in the wings – into an automated spar-assembly machine. The spar is the first step in building the wings and marks the start of major manufacturing for an airplane.

Hawker Pacific Aerospace is one of the first repair facilities to reach an agreement with Liebherr-Aerospace, the supplier of the landing gear systems for the Embraer E-Jet family, for full sup-port and access to all E-Jet landing gear documentation, revision services, and technical engineering services. The strong and unique working relationship between Hawker Pacific Aerospace and Liebherr-Aerospace firmly supports the commence-ment of E-Jet landing gear overhauls, which began early 2013. The capability build up at Hawker Pacific Aerospace was completed at the end of 2012 with an in-vestment in a complete Embraer 190 spare shipset, original tooling, a nose landing gear test stand, and other dedicated equipment. Within the next few months, utilizing its own stock of E-Jet rotables, Hawker Pacific Aerospace will begin full landing gear exchange and overhaul services for all E-Jet operators in North and South America.

Boeing reports record revenue and backlog

Boeing Commercial Airplanes fourth-quarter revenue increased to $14.2bn and full-year rev-enue increased to a record $49.1bn on higher delivery volume. Fourth-quarter operating margin was 8.9% and full-year operating margin was 9.6%, both reflecting the dilutive impact of 787 and 747-8 deliveries and higher period costs partially offset by the higher volume and lower R&D. During the quarter, Commercial Airplanes achieved a five-per-month production rate on the 787 program and, as of year-end, had won over 1,000 firm orders for the 737 MAX since launch. The 737 program broke the company’s single-year record for both orders and deliveries in 2012. During the year, Commercial Airplanes delivered the first 747-8 Intercontinental, began major assembly on the 787-9 and successfully executed a total of five production rate increases. Commercial Airplanes booked 394 net orders during the quarter. Backlog remains strong with nearly 4,400 airplanes valued at a record $319bn. The company’s current 2013 financial guidance assumes no significant financial impact from the FAA directive. The guidance reflects continued strong core performance, generating an expected 5% increase in core earnings per share (non-GAAP).

Lufthansa Technik outlines reorganization strategy

Lufthansa Technik AG intends an extensive reorganization of its administrative structures and processes. The planned changes are part of the Lufthansa Group’s program for the future, SCORE. “We have already implemented many innovations in production and op-timized processes there, and now we intend similar improvements in administration,” said August Wilhelm Henningsen, chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Technik. “Modern, efficient administration is an important condition for the future international growth of Lufthansa Technik AG. “Since the spring of 2012, nearly 200 experts from all areas of Lufthansa Technik have been involved in a SCORE project called NETwork in which all structures and processes were critically assessed. Numerous proposals for im-proving processes were tested for feasi-bility. The result is an extensive package of more than 200 individual measures, each with the goal of organizing admin-istration more efficiently and respond-ing more effectively to customer needs. Business administration functions will be centralized, purchasing activities will be bundled in competence cent-ers, shared services will be implemented more strongly in the personnel area, and stronger regionalization in sales will aim for better proximity to the customer. The changes in administration in Germany will be effected by the year 2015. 650 positions will likely be eliminated. This reorganization will be implemented in a socially responsible manner. Semi-retirement, early retirement and severance agreements are being offered on a voluntary basis. In addition, positions that become vacant through natural attrition will not be filled.

Chengdu to have direct link to Frankfurt with new Air China route

Air China will commence nonstop Chengdu-Frankfurt service on May 19, 2013. The new service will cement Chengdu’s position as southwestern China’s air transportation hub and offer a faster and more economic option for travelers between southwestern China and Europe. Chengdu, the capital of a province widely known as China’s bread-basket, is a southwestern Chinese city with huge growth potential. Recent years have seen a continuous uptick in the number of outbound travelers from Chengdu and other southwestern neighboring cities like Lhasa, Kunming and Xi’an who leave China via Chengdu. Currently, passengers who travel between Chengdu and other southwestern regions and Germany have to transfer in Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong, and the whole journey takes at least 15 hours. The opening of the new Chengdu-Frankfurt nonstop service will make Chengdu the third Mainland China city with direct air links to Frankfurt. The whole flight takes just 10 hours, which represents a significant cut in travel time. This faster service will be another driver of the fast growth in tourism and economy of southwestern China.
