And we’re off…….
BVSD
25
Thank you parents, students and Bear Creek staff for such a fantastic start of the year. I feel lucky to be beginning my eleventh year as a part of such a wonderful community.
I always start the year telling you that “each year there are a few new faces on our Bear Creek team” and then I proceed to tell you about all our new hires. Well, this year I can’t just cut and paste the new names into my opening article because, for the first time since I’ve been here, we have no new staff members at Bear Creek! Some folks have switched jobs, returned from maternity leaves, or changed grade levels, but it’s the same crew as last year. It’s actually pretty shocking.
And, I’m not just talking about classroom teachers, but all of our secretaries, custodi-ans, kitchen staff, support staff, paraeducators, and specialist teachers are familiar faces at Bear Creek. I get the sense that people like it here, are happy, and enjoy the company of colleagues who like to work hard but also have fun. I am so lucky to have them all back, and they have given me the gift of a year without new hiring or new staff members to teach the Bear Creek way. We have welcomed a lot of new blood in the past few years, and we anticipate that we will gladly welcome others in the future, but for this year you have the same seasoned? wise? crusty? crew as the year before.
We do welcome 58 new kindergartners and 45 new students in grades 1-5. Our total school population is 417, which is the largest we’ve been in 20+ years.
Please take the time to read through Bear Tracks each week so that you are aware of school events and news. In addition to Bear Tracks, parents can find a wealth of information about Bear Creek on our web-site, and particularly on the document Bear Creek A-Z.
As I look back on the first full week of school and forward to the rest of the year, I am truly feeling lucky to start my second decade at Bear Creek. While I may truly be a crusty curmudgeon if I stay another 10 years, I am hopeful that since I get the oppor-tunity to still have recess in the middle of the day, to get high fives from students, and to be entertained by the hilarious things kindergarten students say, it will keep me young and enthusiastic about every day I get to spend at Bear Creek.
I welcome the opportunity to meet some of you who are new parents and to reconnect with all of you in the coming weeks and months in order to build a strong partnership in the education of your children.
Here’s hoping for a fantastic school year ahead for all of us! ~Kent Cruger

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
As you are looking for activities for your children to participate
in before and after school, I just wanted to give you a "heads-up"
about where to look for activities that are happening at Bear
Creek, and which ones are Bear Creek and BVSD sponsored.
*Starting today in Bear Tracks, you will see opportunities for
your children to participate in school sponsored clubs such as
intramural sports, jump rope, Spotlights, and drumming club. Bear
Creek clubs are supervised by Bear Creek staff.
*Lifelong Learning, which is part of BVSD's Community Schools
Program runs many wonderful activities for students in schools
across the district. If you go to their web-page you can find
great kid classes, many of which will happen right at our school!
Lifelong Learning will send you mail alerts of activities that are
happening at Bear Creek. You can sign up for classes at any loca-
tion, but parents have found it particularly accommodating when
classes happen right at Bear Creek. This fall at Bear Creek Life-
long Learning will offer at Bear Creek such things as chess, bas-
ketball, Spanish classes, and lego building.
*Finally, please check the Community Board in our front hallway
where other activities that are not sponsored by the school or
Lifelong Learning can be posted. Oftentimes these activities hap-
pen at Bear Creek, as groups can rent some of our spaces after
school.
LOST and FOUND
The lost and found is located at the end of the
hallway by the gym between the inside and out-
side doors.
Bear Creek Back to School Night
Thursday, September 11, 2014
The staff is looking forward to the evening of Thursday, September
11th and encourages you to attend Back to School Night. Since this
evening is scheduled as a parents only night, please make other
arrangements for your child(ren).
The evening is planned for you as follows:
K and 1 Classroom Session: 5:00-5:40pm
2 and 3 Classroom Session: 5:45-6:25pm 4 and 5 Classroom Session: 6:30-7:10pm
You are also invited drop by the gym between 5:30-6:40pm
to say hello to Mrs. Wright (art) Mr. Soole (PE), Mrs. James (Music),
and Mrs. Brockway (Library).
Notes from Mr. Cruger
Cruger Cup
If your child walked, biked, scootered, took public transportation, car-pooled, etc., to school every day that they attended school last year, as you probably know, he/she has earned the right to bring home the CRUGER CUP for one week this year. It's a huge accomplishment which ironical-ly/sadly Mr. Cruger has not yet accomplished. One year I missed it by just one day, but I'm really going for it and this will be my year! If your child is one of the students who made it last year, stop by the office and talk to Carolyn and she can sign you up for a week to take the Cup home. We have 2 Cruger Cups this year so each child should get their own week.
Much like the Stanley Cup, the Cruger Cup has gone many places and has many stories to tell. I know that some people have even eaten their morning cereal out of the Cruger Cup (although I highly recommend a serious cleaning process before you do this) and I know it's been to top of at least on 14er! Don't forget to take a picture with the cup and send it to us.
More information will be coming home soon about our Car Free Commuting program for this coming year, and perhaps this year will be the year you complete the Cruger Cup.
Bear Creek Staff Completes ALS Challenge
One of the biggest downpours in Boulder that I've seen in a long time did not
stop the Bear Creek staff from completing our latest challenge:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbDduDWoCUI
(Are you starting to understand why I keep saying this is the greatest, most enthusiastic, craziest staff around?)
AS A NEW SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS…
SOME HELPFUL HINTS FROM THE OFFICE
School Hours: School begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. Morning Kindergarten session is from 8:30 a.m. to
11:20 a.m. Afternoon Kindergarten session is from 12:05 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Playground Supervision: The playground is supervised for 15 minutes before school starts and for 15 minutes af-
ter dismissal. Students should not arrive before 8:15 a.m., as there is no supervision prior to this time. Students
should leave the school grounds promptly after dismissal at 3:00 p.m.
Inclement Weather: Students do not enter the building until the entrance bell, except in the event of bad
weather. A red flag on the flag pole will signal that students may come inside before the morning bell, and a green
flag will signal that students should remain on the playground until school begins.
Bear Creek Bike Policy. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 may ride their bikes, skateboards or scooters to school.
Students in grades K, 1, and 2 may ride with an adult accompaniment. All students are to wear a helmet. Please
dismount on the edge of the Bear Creek property and walk your bike or scooter to the rack. Ride safely. Bike
racks are now located in 3 places on our campus and skateboards now have racks in the front.
Tardiness: We believe that regular school attendance and being on time is of the utmost importance. The warning
bell will ring at 8:28a.m. and the regular bell at 8:29 to allow students enough time to be seated, ready, and in
class by the time announcements start at 8:33 a.m. A student not in their seat at 8:35 a.m. needs to report as
tardy to the office.
Early Dismissals: If your child must be dismissed early or excused from school for a brief period of time, please
see his/her teacher to determine the necessary arrangements. In addition, please stop by the office to sign your
child out and back in (if applicable).
Visitors/Volunteers: All visitors are asked to stop by the school office, sign in, pick-up and wear a visitor or vol-
unteer badge every time they visit. Please return the badge to the office and sign out upon leaving the building.
We know many of you are here regularly to volunteer, but we ask that you still check in every time.
Play Dates: After-school arrangements should be made prior to the beginning of school. It is not always possible
to get a message to a classroom during the last minutes of the day. We understand that emergencies come up and
we will try to help when this happens.
Absences: Please call the office at 720-561-3502 by 8:45 a.m. if your child will be late or absent.
If you know your child will miss the following day at school, please call and leave a message for the
office staff on the Bear Creek voicemail.
Health Room News Because we are all back to together and like to share everything, we want to
remind parents of BVSD guidelines for keeping your student at home and good hygiene practices.
Guidelines for Keeping Your Student Home
Fever, vomiting, or diarrhea: Your student should remain home for 24 hours after symptoms end.
Colds/respiratory viruses: Keep your student home at the beginning of a cold. This is also the time when one is most
infectious and least likely to feel well enough to participate in class. When he/she feels better and no longer has a
persistent cough, it is permissible to return to school.
Strep throat: Your student may return to school after taking the antibiotic for 24 hours, feeling better, and being
free of symptoms.
Your child will be sent home if he/she has a temperature of 101° or 100° accompanied by any other symptoms.
Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs. (taken from the CDC website on Flu Prevention)
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you are sick with flu–like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except
to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing
medicine.)
While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
Strep throat and Sore throat (taken from the CDC website on Strep Throat in Kids)
Not all sore throats are strep throats. Most episodes of sore throat — which can be accompanied by a runny nose, cough,
hoarseness, and red eyes — are caused by viruses and usually clear up on their own without medical treatment.
A child with strep throat will start to develop other symptoms within about 3 days, such as:
red and white patches in the throat lower stomach pain
difficulty swallowing fever
tender or swollen glands (lymph nodes) in the neck general discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling
red and enlarged tonsils loss of appetite and nausea Headache rash
Strep throat usually requires treatment with antibiotics. With the proper medical care — along with plenty
of rest and fluids — a child should be back to school and play within a few days.
What is the right way to wash your hands?
Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.
Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your
fingers, and under your nails.
Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end
twice.
Rinse your hands well under running water.
Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
LUNCHROOM INFORMATION Negative Balance:
With all the new and exciting changes Nutrition Services is making, we will always feed our students and will allow their
accounts to go in arrears. Nutrition Services staff will be generating letters from the QSP POS system and will have them
distributed through homeroom teachers in Friday folders. We will also be making phone calls and sending emails to parents
directly from Nutrition Services Dept.
Food Allergies:
BVSD is prohibited by USDA regulations to make any milk substitutions unless we have on file a disability form filled out and
signed by a medical physician. If a child has a severe allergy that is considered a disability, parents can take the Disability
Form to a medical physician (e.g. not a nurse practitioner).
The doctor must fill out Part B Prescribed Diet Order and detail what food to omit and what food to substitute. Parent needs
to bring signed form back to school nurse and we need a copy at the Food Service office before we can make any substitu-
tions.
If a parent does not wish to have the disability form filled out, we cannot make milk substitutions. However, the child always
has the option to refuse the milk and take a minimum 3 of the 4 other meal components offered (fruit, veg, grain, protein),
and drink water or purchase a juice.
Nutritional information as well as allergy information can be found at www.bvsd.org/food/Pages/default.aspx
Lunch Fees
Elementary $3.25
Reduced Price K-2 $0.00, 3-12 $0.40
(with qualification)
1% Milk $0.50
Side salad - child $1.00
Juice $0.50
Adult Price $4.75 w/milk (side salad $2.00)
Paying for Lunch:
About Your Child’s Cafeteria Meal Account:
All students have a personal meal account. Students access their account using their six-digit student ID#.
Putting money on your student’s account in advance eliminates the need for your child to remember to bring money to school
daily. Having money in their account also helps keep lunch lines moving.
Send cash or check in any dollar amount to be credited to your child’s personal meal account, or go to
MyPaymentsPlus.com to add money to their account. MyPaymentsPlus.com is fast, easy and very convenient to use.
With MyPaymentsPlus.com you can set up a low-balance email reminder for when your student’s account gets below a
level you choose. If you prefer, you can set up an auto-refill when your student’s account drops to zero. No money is ever
charged to your credit card without your approval and there are no transaction fees.
If using checks, please make payable to: Boulder Valley School District. Write your child’s first and last name and student ID#
on the check to be sure the money is deposited in the correct account.
When students bring a lunch from home, they may use their account to purchase milk, juice and side
salad bar.
Please contact the cafeteria or MyPaymentsPlus.com as needed to check on your child’s account bal-
ance before it gets too low.
Cash and Checks. Please make checks payable to BVSD and include your child’s full name and student
ID #. With cash payments, please be sure the money is in a securely sealed envelope with full name
and student ID number on the envelope. Money can be divided among siblings at the same school;
please make a note if you would like to do this, and note the dollar amount per child.
BEAR CREEK ELEMENTARY DIRECTORY
Welcome to the New Bear Creek Directory!
This year’s directory will be formatted as a Google doc. This will allow parents to view student/household information from a desktop, smart phone and in the coming months, a printed booklet. We hope this will be a very efficient way for parents and students to connect with one another and keep everything as up to date as possible. The link will be shared to the Bear Creek Community with viewing privileges only.
All our Bear Creek families should have received in your registration paperwork a sheet describing the information that will be included in the directory. The information is: student name, teacher, home address, home phone, parents’ cell phone and emails addresses. You can modify your family’s information as little or as much as you want by sending me an email.
I hope to have the directory available by Sept. 15th. Thank you SO very much for your patience with any kinks that may come along with the transition–

PTO PULSE
Welcome back to another school year for our returning families! We would like to extend an especially warm welcome for our new Bear Creek families!
Too bad the weather did not cooperate for our annual School Picnic this week. Please note that the School Picnic has been rescheduled to Tuesday, September 2 at 5:30 PM. Let's hope for good weather that evening!
The Kindergarten parents also bonded at the Boo Hoo Breakfast on Wednesday. I'd like to thank Kathleen and Michael Brucher for opening up their home for this wonderful event.
School Photos and Back to School Night
The coming weeks are sure to be busy! School photos take place on Monday, September 8 and Back to School Night is on Thursday, September 11. This is your chance to meet your child's teacher, see the inside of the classroom, and find out about classroom projects and procedures.
Yahoo! Group
There is a Yahoo! Group for Bear Creek Parents to spread the
word about non-school sponsored sports, clubs, and activities.
Some of you have told us that it is difficult to find out about non-
school sponsored activities. Sign up and feel free to post mes-
sages about activities you hear about. To sign up, go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/ and type “Bearcreekparents” in the
Search Field and then Click to Join.
Thank You to all the Summer Volunteers! Thank you to the following parents who helped the PTO this summer with various jobs: Michelle Wellington, Camila Weise, Sun-Young Hendrick, Janine Fitzpatrick, Lisa Cook, Kristin De-Lorenzo, Sean Elliot, Jane Henderson, Amy Viverito, Sonya Gary, Mindy Munger, Robyn Savage, Brigetta Stephenson, Holly Sprague, Jennie Fieger, Edie Cheng, and Kristine Elliot. You folks are the BEST!
Next PTO Meeting
Tuesday, September 9 from 1:30-3 pm in the Fishbowl. All are welcome.

King Soopers
Another way to support Bear Creek is to participate in the King Soopers Neighborhood Rewards Program. If you shop at King Soopers or buy gas at King Soopers stations, please load and use your card!
King Soopers gives Bear Creek 5% of every dollar you load onto your card. It is so easy, and such a great way to earn money for our school.
Last year we made over $20,000 from the King Soopers program. If half of our Bear Creek families loaded $300 per month onto their King Soopers card, we would earn $27,000 in a year. Try it! If you need a card, Carolyn has $5 cards available in the front office.
It would be such a shame to waste free money for the school if you shop at King Soopers and do not use your rewards card!

Library News
School is in full swing, and your children have started bringing home library books. For new Bear
Creek parents and those who need a review, library policies are as follows: Students come to
the library weekly with their class for a scheduled library time. (Teachers will let you know your
child’s scheduled day.) During this time, students will come for a lesson, read aloud, or book
talks. Students then choose books. Kindergartners check out one book, first graders two, third and fourth three, and
fifth graders four. Students may also come to the library during the school day to check out with their teacher’s per-
mission. Parents are welcome to get library cards and check out books as well.
Patrons may keep their books for two weeks, but if they want to check out new books during their next library ses-
sion, they need to return their books. Books are considered overdue if they have been checked out longer than two
weeks, and patrons will receive an overdue notice. Students are not allowed to check out books until they return all
overdue books. Please help your children remember to return their books on time so they do not miss library check
out. If patrons want to keep books longer than two weeks, they can renew them. We do not charge fines for over-
due books, but replacement costs are charged for lost or damaged materials. Students who did not pay for lost books
from last year will be expected to pay for them before they can resume library privileges.
We have a club in the library called the Newbery Club, which is open to students in grades 3-5. This
club encourages students to read Newbery Medal and honor books (Newbery Medal books are recog-
nized each year for outstanding children’s fiction). Any interested student can pick up a review sheet in
the library. To participate in the club, students must read at least one Newbery book in the fall and
complete a book review sheet, which they will return to Mrs. Brockway in the library. They will then
have their picture taken with their book for display on the Newbery Book Club board. They will also be invited to at-
tend a party in the fall where students will come to discuss their favorite Newbery books. They will need to read at
least one more Newbery book to participate in the spring.
5th graders are also invited to join the 5th grade girls and boys book groups. Fifth grade girls meet with Mrs. Brockway
in the library, and 5th grade boys meet with Mr. Henkhaus in his classroom monthly at lunch to discuss a book.
Students bring their own lunches and discuss that month’s selection. All 5th graders are welcome to attend any or all
of the sessions. All books are available in the Bear Creek library. This month’s selections are Because of Mr. Terupt
by Rob Buyea for the girls and Wild Life by Randy Barrow for the boys. The girls’ first meeting will be on Monday,
September 29th, and the boys’ meeting will be on Friday, September 26th.
Grandrabbit’s Toy Shoppe continues to offer its Bunny Bucks program. You simply tell the cashier at
the beginning of your transaction that you would like Bunny Bucks to go to Bear Creek. Ten percent
of your purchase price will be donated in merchandise to our school. Last year we earned $400 in
books and decorations for the library and classrooms, so remember to patronize this generous mer-
chant and to mention Bear Creek at check out.
Join the Bear Creek Library Birthday Club!!! Celebrate your child’s birthday with the gift of reading! Donate a hard-
cover book in your child’s honor to the school library! A bookplate with your child’s name and special occasion will be
placed inside the book. A photo of your child holding the book will be posted on the library bulletin board, and the
birthday child gets to be the first one to check it out of the library! (Please note that it can take a week or more be-
fore the books are ready for check out.) Please see Mrs. Brockway for a list of suggested titles or to check to be sure
that we don’t already have a particular book. If you would rather donate a $20.00 check to the library, Mrs. Brockway
will select a book in honor of your child.

Dear Parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Students,
Welcome back! Choir will be starting soon and we want your child to be a part of
Spotlights!
Any 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader who loves to sing, practice, and perform and can commit to
weekly practices is welcome to join Spotlights. All members must exhibit excellent
classroom behavior, be able to follow directions, and be able to work as a team.
There is no limit on numbers; however, a sound knowledge, respect, and apprecia-
tion for singing are required. We will perform at certain events throughout the year
and you will be given prior notification. There will be a $40.00 cost for this group for
new members, which covers the cost for the t-shirt, music, accompanist, spring musi-
cal, costumes, and other music materials. If you already have a choir shirt, the cost
will be only $35.00.
Practices are held every Monday and Wednesday morning from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30
a.m. The first practice will be September 8th.
Attendance is mandatory should your child choose to participate and punctuality is
very important. Although I know unexpected events may happen and will of course
be excused, please note that three unexcused absences or tardies may result in your
child being removed from choir.
Thank you so much for helping make this a great year! I look forward to seeing all of
you. Please take the next week to decide if you would like to sign up for choir and
we will begin on Monday, September 8th in the gym. Attached are the permission
form and contract, which must be returned to me by Wednesday, September 17th. The t-shirt form and money are due by Monday, September 29th. I am looking for-
ward to an exciting year at school and in choir!
Spotlights Permission Form This form is due back by September 17th.
My son/daughter, _____________________________, has my permission to be a
member of Spotlights. I agree to arrange transportation for them to school at 7:45
a.m. on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Spotlights Contract 2014-2015 This form is due back by September 17th.
All choir students are expected to have excellent behavior. We represent the entire elementary school
when we perform and we need to set a good example for the rest of the student body. During a re-
hearsal, students are expected to stand and sing without talking to one another. Long periods of talking
AND singing can cause strain to young vocal cords. It also slows down the rehearsal and makes it
“boring” for everyone! One warning note will be issued for inappropriate behavior so that parents can
be made aware of any issues when they occur. Please take a few moments to review with your child
the expectations we have for them as a choir member as stated below. I am looking forward to a great
year!
Please initial each line with a parent’s initial and student’s initial stating that you and your child have
read and understand the commitment to choir.
______ ______ I agree to attend each practice unless there is an illness or emergency.
______ ______ I agree to keep talking, playing, or socializing to a minimum during practice. Repeated
interruption will result in a written warning note home. If the behavior occurs again,
I may be removed from choir.
______ ______ I agree to work as a team and to be willing to sit, stand, or work with any member of
choir even if I do not know them very well.
______ ______ Gum, cellphones, and food are not allowed in practices.
______ ______ I will work hard to memorize the song lyrics and am willing to study them at home.
______ ______ I agree to wear my Spotlights uniform for every performance.
The students will be required to wear black pants, their Spotlights t-shirt and dark
shoes (preferably black) for the concerts.
My child and I have reviewed and agree to the rules and requirements for Spotlights. She/He under-stands that Spotlights is a third, fourth and fifth grade choir, and it is a privilege to represent the school and participate in this program.
T-Shirt Order Form:
This form (and $40.00 fee for new members or anyone needing a new t-shirt, $35.00 for returning members who do not need a t-shirt) is
due back by Monday, September 29th.
Everyone in choir must order a t-shirt, which is included in the $40.00 fee for the
year. If you already have a t shirt, the cost will be $35.00 for the year. Please fill out
this form and turn in with your money no later than Monday, September 29th.
Thank you!

Student accident insurance 2014-2015
Low-cost student accident insurance is again being offered by Markel this year. They have changed their enrollment method from
paper to electronic and will not be providing print outs to schools to distribute to students. Attached is a PDF of their enrollment
information. This information is also available on the district website at
http://www.bvsd.org/employees/AthleticsActivities/Athletic%20Insurance%20Information/Forms/AllItems.aspx.
Healthy Kids Initiative
Another possible option for parents whose students need health insurance is the Boulder County Healthy Kids Initiative which
helps families enroll in Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and Medicaid. CHP+ and Medicaid are free and low-cost health insurance
plans that provide dental, medical, prescription, mental health, and vision benefits. There are no monthly premiums, and co-pays
range from $0 - $15 depending on family income. CHP+ has higher income eligibility limits than many public assistance programs,
so many working families can qualify. Assets are not considered when determining eligibility for these programs. Some families
who have not previously qualified may be able to qualify now due to new income guidelines.
Eligibility specialists are available to serve families at all BVSD schools. Call 720-515-1454 today to talk with a specialist or to make
an appointment!
