W elcome to the September edition of BAWTRY TODAYBAWTRY TODAY.

Back to school time already! How the year is flying by. For me, with 3 children (14, 13 & 9) the year is very much timetabled by school holidays. The next one is 8 weeks away!

I have been lucky enough to spend 2 great weeks in Cornwall this summer, enjoying the sunshine, relaxing on the beach, walking the cliff paths, cycling the Camel Trail and this year I have added a new activity; body boarding in the surf - I am even the proud owner of my own wet suit, although I did have to use one of my children’s cast off boards, perhaps I will have my own next year!

I hope that you enjoy this months magazine, please do get in touch if there is something that you would like to see in future editions.

The next edition will be distributed to you from 28th September. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 14th September.

Best Wishes, Paula

Arts Review and What’s Going On September 2012 Hilary Cartmel

We’ve enjoyed a range of music festivals this summer. The kids (I use the term loosely) have been off to several including the Sheffield free festival ‘Tramlines’ 20 to 22 July which had music in every venue possible in the City, now in its third year and with a huge range on offer. Global Gathering where the dance music went on until 4 in the morning ( dance = not waltz or foxtrot) and Leeds Fest at Braham Park - always a fixture for our ‘kids’ will have come and gone by the time Today goes to print. Doncaster had its own free festival called MAP (Music and People) on 4th August. The local pubs in Harworth (Blacksmiths) and Scaftworth (King Willliam) have done one day festivals.

We – the oldies in the family went off for a weekend of Folk at Cambridge at the end of July. I did think we would fit in invisibly amongst the grey bearded sandal wearers – but this was not so. The age range was total and there were some brilliant young performers busking around the site and playing on the smaller and intimate stages. One, called the Front Room, was barely bigger than a family sized tent and complete with sofas and seating for about ten within its canvas walls, but with plenty of space on the grass outside. It’s a broad church, folk music, there was none of the stereotype finger-in-the-ear (and what’s wrong with several voices performing in tight harmony?) All performers wear earpieces and have wires coming out the backs of their heads now. We saw from one extreme to the other: virtuoso performances of electrified Irish and Scottish developments of slip-jigs and reels with almost 20 musicians on stage including electrified Northumbrian Pipes and bodhran to Billy Bragg celebrating the life and work of Woody Guthrie who believed that being able to play more than 2 chords on the guitar was showing off. A great atmosphere and good beer all added to the weekend and in Cambridge we were blessed with sunshine.

Very little beats live music or live performance. There will be plenty of live and local performances in the neighbourhood over the next few months, brought to you by TMS, The Rock, Village Ventures, Letwell Gigs and many more besides.

The Rock – every Friday evening at the Wesley centre in Maltby Kicks off the Autumn season on 7th September with Vin Garbutt. www.therock.org.uk

Tickhill Music Society concerts in St Mary’s school hall begin their Autumn season on 21 September with Erato Piano Trio playing Haydn, Beethoven and Faure. www.tickhillmusicsociety.org

Letwell Gigs at Letwell Village Hall have Anna Coogan and Daniele Fiaschi on Saturday 22 September email: [email protected]

Village Ventures the rural touring program brought to you by Notts County Council with funding from Arts Council England (which means subsidised ticket prices) begins the 2012/13 season locally at Bircotes Town Hall with the ever popular and ever brilliant Northumberland Theatre Company. Their version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream – bringing the Shakespeare Season to our doorstep. Friday 28 September. www.villageventures.org.uk tickets 01302 752515 / 752642

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry Doncaster

To raise funds we enjoyed a pie and pea supper evening at Ye Olde Bell, Barnby Moor on the 7th July. What a fantastically entertaining evening this turned out to be. The Bruvvers Blue were brilliant. The food as usual was delicious and everyone had a terrific evening dancing the night away.

Many people donated raffle and auction prizes to help raise even more funds. Thank you to everyone. They included Jamps Cantonise Resturant Tickhill, JG Photography Harworth, Ye Olde Belle The Vulcan Team at Robin Hood Airport, Mulberries Spa Retford, Yorkshire Wild Life Park Bondhay Golf Club, Doncaster Super Bowl this was a small selection of people that supported us for anyone that I have not mentioned a BIG THANK YOU

Thank you also to Il Bello Venue Decorations from Harworth. At the drop of a hat they provided beautiful balloons for our table decorations, which were amazing.

Huge thanks also go to Bruvvers Blue for making the night go with such a bang. They also auctioned themselves to raise another £300. The final total was around £1700 raised so thank you for everyone that contributed.

If you had a great time we will be arranging something similar on the 17th November. So bring your party to our party and have a night to remember. Pet of the Month Hello my name is Pixie and I came into care with my little sister when we were just a few weeks old that is nearly a year ago. We were found abandoned in a field and would have died if some nice people hadn't found us. My sister went to her new home almost immediately, she was a different colour to me, as you can see I am all black but very cute and love to be cuddled. I don't know who named me Pixie but I hoped it would make me stand out from the rest of the residents. But its not to be I am still in my pen looking out into the big wide world trying to catch visitors attention ( I have heard that black cats don't get re homed because of their colour ) O K ! so I maybe black but I still have feelings and it makes me sad watching the pretty coloured cats go to their new homes and I am still here. Would someone please come and give me a home, I will be very good and be a perfect companion. We have some very loving cats and dogs, if you think you can give any of our residents a home, or if you would like to donate just £1 per month to our charity please call the Sanctuary on 01302 711330.

It costs us £500 per day to stay open, all donations are down this year and we are desperate for further funds so your help is much needed

The second generation of solar power is here

By Alison Courtnell, managing director of Solar ENLES (www.solar-enles.co.uk)

Have you ever heard the expression "about as useful as a chocolate teapot", or "about as useful as a concrete parachute"?

Another of these is "about as useful as a solar-powered torch". But the premise on which this third expression is based – that something solar-powered only works if the sun is out – doesn’t actually ring true.

As of today, it is possible to run your home or business on solar even after the sun has set. You just need SunBat, a system that stores any solar power that you don’t use right away. SunBat integrates neatly into any PV system, new or retrofit, and is available for both single- and three-phase connections.

There are several benefits for those who install this brand new technology: It makes you even more independent from the National Grid, reducing your bills

substantially You can use eco-friendly electricity at the times of day when you need it the most – for most

people, this is in the morning and evening when they are at home. Your electricity stays on during a power cut – for hours, typically. You add to the value of your property.

The introduction of SunBat is a huge step forward for solar power in the UK. The first generation of solar customers in this country sought to take advantage of the Government’s feed-in tariffs, but the second generation is less dependent on them. The cost savings made possible by SunBat, together with the significant drop in the cost of solar PV and the steady rise in the cost of grid electricity, has made solar energy an attractive proposition in its own right.

Solar ENLES will launch SunBat at the Solar Power UK event at the Birmingham NEC 2-4 October.

Mount Kilimanjaro I am going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro later this year. In order to do so I am raising funds to support my expedition which has led me to seek fundraising opportunities within my local community. Thank you to everyone who supported my coffee morning at Ye Olde Bell in July.

I work at Ye Olde Bell and I would like to extend my thanks to the management and staff for their support and sponsorship and will be taking the infamous 'Ye Olde Bell Travelling Apron' to the top of Kilimanjaro for a photo, as my colleagues have done before me!

I will also be 'tweeting' my way up the mountain so people can keep updated on the challenge – follow me @sasha_up_kili I decided to get involved with the trek after hearing that a group of friends wanted to raise some money for TEACH (Time to Educate Africa’s Children) by climbing Kilimanjaro. The charity aims to alleviate poverty through the power of education by providing schools with innovative and holistic educational programmes and after learning more about them I decided I’d like to support the charity by taking on the challenge. If you are able to assist me with any sponsorship I can be contacted at [email protected]

Bawtry Dramatic Society will be holding a Performing Arts Festival for two weeks from 9th to 23rd September 2012, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its foundation. Ship Inn continues to sail away with the plaudits The accolades keep on coming for The Ship Inn in Bawtry with the Yorkshire Post the latest publication to give the Marston’s pub a rave review.

Licensees Dave and Mandy Wallis have built up a sterling reputation over the years and have once again drawn top praise for their traditional food menu and focus on cask ales. Dave said: “It’s always great to receive positive feedback. The entire team here work tirelessly to make the pub a place where people can come to enjoy quality meals and of course a good pint.”

2012 has already been a successful year at The Ship Inn with the pub winning the “East Region Community Food Pub of the Year” in the “Marston’s Pub of the Year Awards” back in April.

“There are a number of eateries in the area, but the locals and passers-through Bawtry alike want somewhere they can go to eat good honest food,” explained Dave. “The awards and accolades we’ve received are glowing endorsements that we are continuing to make the right impressions in the area.”

The Ship’s ale choices have drawn countless praise over the years with Doncaster CAMRA naming the pub Doncaster District Pub of the Year in 2011. Four real ales always compliment the bar, as well as a good selection of spirits, liqueurs, wines, and soft drinks For more information on The Ship Inn please email [email protected] call 01302 710275 or visit www.theship-bawtry.com. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust manage over 70 nature reserves, the largest being the Idle Valley Nature Reserve just

The annual Firewood Festival held at Idle Valley Nature Reserve gives everyone a great opportunity to learn how traditional woodland management techniques create employment and opportunities to create natural products from the wood so that nothing is wasted, whilst at the same time protecting wildlife for the future and transferring ancient skills.

This year there will be even more demonstrations with the stunning logging horses, swedish logs, pole lathing, bentwood chair-making, chainsaw carving, log splitting and log burner displays. Learn how to make the most of your fuel and look after your log burner in an eco-friendly way, helping Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to protect wildlife for the future at the same time.

Charity calls for supporters to sleep rough for one night

Local charity SAFE@LAST is calling for participants to take part in The BIG Sleepout and sleep rough for one

night so young runaways don’t have to.

The BIG Sleepout, SAFE@LAST’s signature event, is returning for the 5th year and to all four boroughs of South Yorkshire to raise funds and awareness of the charity’s work across the county. Since the first BIG Sleepout in 2007, over 1,000 people have taken part and slept rough for one night, raising over £70,000 in the last five years.

The event helps to give participants an insight into what it could be like for the many thousands of young runaways who find themselves sleeping rough. Those taking part have to forgo all comforts for the night as they are only allowed basic items to keep warm such as a sleeping bag and cardboard box.

In order to continue their work and deliver vital services, SAFE@LAST has to fundraise and every penny raised through the BIG Sleepout will make a huge difference. This year the charity hopes to have over 500 participants sleeping rough across the four venues.

Fundraising Officer Barbara Raszyk commented “The BIG Sleepout provides a chance for us to highlight the struggles young runaways face and for people to have a small taste of what sleeping rough on the streets might be like. When children sleep rough they do it because they feel they have no other choice. They do it because they judge their other options as worse than a cold, lonely, dirty night on the streets. The money raised at these events will help us to continue to ensure that young people across South Yorkshire know they have a safer choice.”

This year’s events are Friday 28th September at Lakeside Village Doncaster, Friday 5th October at The Core Barnsley, Friday 12th October at Don Valley Stadium Sheffield and Friday 19th at Parkgate Shopping Rotherham.

For more information about The BIG Sleepout and SAFE@LAST and to register for the event visit: www.thebigsleepout.co.uk.

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club It’s happened again! Your scribe is meant to put in a report on the club’s activities every three months which means that this report should have been in the July issue. However, just as last year a combination of my holidays, magazine closing dates and possibly a little ARF* means that this contribution will not appear until September. Never mind, hopefully many Probus members and potential Probus members have been on holiday too and my lapse will pass unnoticed.

All our meetings for the remainder of this year are listed below and if you think you might be interested in joining us come along to a meeting as a guest. Normally (i.e. except for the two meetings this September!) we meet at the Millstone on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10.00 for 10.30 am. Meetings usually finish by 12.00 Noon after which many members can be found in the bar downstairs. It beats gardening or decorating any day!

The meetings programme for the rest of the year is:

13th September. Visit to Northern Racing College (list already full)

27th September. Ladies lunch at Doncaster Golf Club (members and wives/partners only).

11th October. “Legacy of Emperors”. Talk by Michael Walpole.

25th October. “So this is Tokyo”. Talk by Jennie Storr

8th November. “Remembrance” Members’ contributions.

22nd November. Annual Lunch (members only)

13th December. TBA (but come along anyway, bound to be good just before Christmas!}

We look forward to seeing old friends and new.

*ARF. Age Related Forgetfulness. Common in people over 70 but can occur earlier or later. Not to be confused with Alzheimer’s Disease or other nasties!

Rossington Hall treat for St Leger race-goers!

Gary and Michelle Gee, owners of Doncaster’s newest luxury wedding, special occasion and fine dining venue Rossington Hall, are delighted to be sponsoring Doncaster Racecourse’s new Premier On The Lawn facility at this year’s Ladbrokes St. Leger Festival. Premier On The Lawn is a newly created admission badge, taking the best of the existing Premier Suite and locating it in a duplex marquee on the champagne lawn.

Gary and Michelle have long had a passion for horse racing and have been members of Doncaster Racecourse for many years. They are equally passionate about period buildings and see the partnership with Doncaster Racecourse as a wonderful opportunity to merge their fond interest in both to create a very special experience for St Leger race-goers in Doncaster.

Gary and Michelle have owned Rossington Hall, a Victorian Grade II listed building, for just over a year, and, having spent over £3.5million on the first phase of the renovations so far, have restored much of the beautiful Victorian stately home (including the main state rooms) and grounds back to their former glory, and have created an elegant chandeliered ballroom. Rossington Hall is already becoming known as one of the region’s most prestigious wedding and celebration venues, as well as wowing diners with a fine dining experience fit for those with the most discerning palate.

To mark the occasion, during Thursday 13th – Saturday 15th September of the St Leger Festival , race-goers will be able to delight in an added luxury by enjoying a tantalising selection of dining options, both before and after the racing, in the beautiful state rooms at Rossington Hall. At 10.00am each day, an intimate and exclusive champagne and lobster brunch will be served, where guests can take advantage of tips for the day’s racing from a well-known tipster. The cost is £59 per person and transport to the race course in plenty of time to enjoy action will also be included. For those who prefer to finish the day off with something special, a bespoke 7 course taster menu, created by our 3 AA Rosette chef, John Lyons, will be served from 6.30pm at a cost of £60 per person.

Places will be limited on each dining occasion, so please book early. For further information about Rossington Hall’s special race week celebrations, please contact Kirsty or Patricia on 01302 866822 or email [email protected] www.rossingtonhall.co.uk

Bawtry Town Council Newsletter

September 2012

www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk

Licensing It is hoped that businesses will work with the town council in an effort to restrain the application for liquor licenses in Bawtry which appear to be growing by the week. Residential properties are in close proximity to the centre of Bawtry and can be affected. The Pub Watch Scheme is to be commended but surely our liquor licensing saturation point must have already been reached – What do you think – let us know! A group consisting of three members of the town council, three members of the Pub Watch & Bawtry Retail Association each will discuss the way forward and hopefully arrive at a mutually agreed position for the future. Highway Issues Damaged street furniture (ie lighting columns, traffic lights, seating etc) should be reported to DMBC for action. Please remember that a direct line to DMBC at Bawtry Community Library is still available for you personally to report any matters that concern you to DMBC, the highway authority or by telephoning Doncaster Council on 736000. Market Hill Pay and display parking on the market hill car park will be extended to 10pm (2200 hours) (This was the original contract signed up to some years ago). The change will become effective from 1st November, 2012. Reflective signage and new pay and display meters will be provided. Current charges will remain the same. Consideration will also be given to ‘tick-over tariff’ of a night time to be effective also from 1st November, 2012 Gainsborough Road Toilets Expressions of interest are invited for a cleaner for the above facilities to commence in September, 2012. Interested persons should contact the Clerk to the Council or the Chairman (details at the end of the newsletter) Airport & Tunnel Tech Complaints Can we remind all residents that complaints should be referred to the telephone numbers/email addresses at the end of this newsletter, so that the complaints can be logged by the appropriate authority. The new contact email for Tunnel Tech complaints is: [email protected]
